- The seven semi-finalists battle for a place in the final by painting a double portrait of Richard Dawkins and Sally Hitchiner.
Portrait Artist of the Year is a competition art show aiming to find the best portrait painter of the year.
Each episode features a regional competition and contestants are challenged to produce a portrait of one of three famous sitters.
As the competition goes on, three artists will remain, and these finalists will have their work displayed in the world-famous National Portrait Gallery in London. The winner eventually receives a $10,000 commission to become a permanent part of the British Library!

Before I watch this an rip my hair out due to the judges, I just wanted to say THANK YOU SO MUCH for uploading these. They make my Sunday. Thank you.
🤣
I love Christian's painting style!
I appreciate all the artists, but Christian Hook’s work stands out as genius. Bravo!
Christian’s portrait was amazing.
Yes it was ,so life like,
He really is an amazing artist!
his was the star
Thank Reel Truth once again for posting this fascinating series! We look forward weekly to it’s post; it never fails to deliver, entertainment with a feeling of participatory enlightenment!
I’m really speechless with Christian’s portrait too.☺️❤️
Hopping onto the Christian rave train! His portrait is stupendous! Would absolutely love to see his work (both process and paintings) in person one day!!!
I like how the subjects, Richard and Sally had a palpable tension between them that you could see in their faces to start, especially the tightness and redness in Richard's face. But, by the end, they were relaxed, friendly and chatting. 😊
Thanks for uploading this. I loved Christian’s portrait, it’s brilliant.
Christian to draw that fast and with that much accuracy is absolutely bonkers. The composition is brilliant but I kinda like the first layer of the painting b4 he slaps on the colors.
The judges drive me crazy!
I’m sorry but Laura’s work does not even compare to some of the ones that didn’t get chosen. Idk why they keep picking her
19:14 i love her work. its simple. elegant. perfectly captured sitter's expression
Wow!!! What talent!! I’m pleased with the judge’s choices, and wow…Christian can sure capture likenesses. Next to watch is “Landscape Artist of the Year” from DIY Daily! Love these series!
All of them are amazing artists, anyone could win. Thanks for sharing. Greetings From Mexico.
Every time they showed Christian’s painting, I was just in awe and kept saying I love it.
I would love to meet Christian Hook and paint with him.
I disrespect the fact the judge's talk to the artists during the competition. Can you imagine how Christian felt whe Ty states "you are losing the drawing" why would Ty say that. Let them be and do what they want. Christian was the winner hands down.
If you’re going to make it as an artist you need criticism to grow. Ty didn’t mean it as a negative either.
@@lechatbotte. He should restrain from criticism during a timed competition.
I would consider it more of a tip that they need to provide as part of the context of the show
I am addicted. Thank you for the upload. I love watching but why not post the entire season 2? You have the entirety of season 1. At this point, episode 7 is the last contribution.
Great, great, great, cannot be better ! Love the presenters too and the judges.
I like the two presenters 🙂
just the though of the challenge of the two together is great
Aine's accent and her smile just melts my heart
It’s lovely to see what the royal academy looks like. When I graduated from an art school in Canada the head handed me their brochure and encouraged me to apply but I didn’t and sometimes I wonder what if? But no regrets and no looking back. Still it’s lovely to see. An amazing place and wonderful artists. 🖌️✨💖
What a wonderful program! When the 3 paintings are set together at the end, the Laura Quinn one, while demonstrating excellent likenesses, falls miles short of being a successful painting as well. The other two can only be described, it seems to me, as brilliant. What I find interesting is that judge Ty Shan Schierenberg comes across as not liking Christian Hook and rather reluctantly is forced to acknowledge his enormous talent...not that he says as much but it is in his tone.
Interesting observation
What a fantastic juxtaposition with the two sitters. Can’t wait to see what the artists come up with.
Christian, for me, produced the best piece by far. As far as the juxtaposition goes: a wasted opportunity by all.
thank you so much for sharing these :) very useful to us overseas who couldn't get a skyarts signature even if we wanted to!
I wish that the sitters had been encouraged to talk with one another from the start, so they could be captured in some kind of dialogue, and so their personalities would come out more. Especially since part of the challenge was to include some kind of dynamic narrative. I think they should have been allowed to interact more.
100% it didn’t make any sense at all and was such an awkward, unnatural and forced situation for everyone
Love Christian’s portrait.
Cristian is a true artist .
I so, so, so, so, so LOVE Ian MacKellen
Phenomenal Talent!
It's frustrating that the judges would pick Laura's painting...proportions are all wrong and even the likeness is off
They probably saw something we couldn’t discern by not being there.
I disagree. The likeness was striking, the depiction unique, and the soul of them bled through the paint, in a far stronger way than a majority of the pieces presented.
@@saraghhh are you her mom? no likeness and no soul, and the only thing that bled were our eyes when we were forced to look at her work.
I really don't understand what the judges see in Laura's portraits, they are so flat and amateurish, she has long ways to go.
The guy with the wax method should've been selected. And of course Christian is super talented, talented and hot. I hope he wins.
Agreed.their fascination with her is mind boggling. The proportions are bizarre, the technique is simply not near what many of the others have. She shouldn't have been in the semi final and she certainly shouldn't have made the final three.
It’s here! Now it’s done. Can’t wait for the next
Now I remember why I stopped seeing this competition, judges are always saying they want to see something ‘new’ they want to be “surprised” those comments just make think they don’t know so much about art, they are like looking for a innovative designer or something like that
I agree with the thing Richard said....most of them just glued to their ipad....i think it would be great if they're not allowed to use any device....just raw observation....and the raw portrait would come out.
Using the devices is a valid part of creating art, and I don't think they should be denied the use of it, but I really LOVE your idea as well, I'd love to see what they would create when it was them and their relationship to the sitters
@@kissedbysun2517 and that's what I wanted to see also.though a lot of artists are amateur and most of them are accustomed to use devices, it's not possible in reality shows.
As a professional artist myself, what can I say is that, I enjoy more painting/drawing from real life much more. But it is also much more harder. Not every one can do that. Especially with a time limit. If there's time limit, I work from references as well. Helps to do it faster.
When there are many artists arranged in front of a portrait subject, they, by necessity, will be far from the sitter.
These artists weren’t able to walk up to the subject to get a better look.
To do a proper portrait, one needs to see the face clearly.
The use of the tablet allows that.
I am watching this on AirPlay (through my TV) and the ads are MADDENINGLY frequent. You can't skip over them unless you hover above your laptop.
Wow, the tension between the sitters as they walked in on day two ! Especially from Sally. You could cut it with a knife.
I love this series! Could you manage to make Part 8 available for other countries please?

Thank you thank you!!!😄❤️
Please post the next episode...much appreciated
Sally the sitter is so adorable ☺️
Awesome
40:31 the very same judge that was needling Christian relentlessly about how “easy” painting is for him, flipping her narrative. Loving the side-eye from other judges.
Why do all of Laura Quinn’s subjects look like they are relatives with the same expression or features?
Love the show 🎨😎
I knew they would choose Anya ,but I thought her painting awful ,even she was surprized,
it wasn't a horrible picture, but the rev. head was too big for her body.
@@gurucarcar no I meant the woman with dark hair ,she was the last of the three chosen ,I didn’t like her painting it was a mess ,
the blonde one yes the reverends head was too big for the body
@@sandraford4235 yeah her painting didn't look finished. it was also kinda cartoonish as well
Really? Compared to the others it was the best in my opinion
Having the hosts hovering constantly using up the artists’ time, I thought, was a bit obnoxious.
Love the show and see artist paint. Thanks for . How ever , I rarely agree with the judges pick. It appears that they are stuck on certain artist's work. Sorry
ok.. i should have waited till the end. the host lady brings up the question of ease seeming to be a strike against and its fairness to do so... and the director only agrees. it would be nice to hear her point of view fleshed out.
can’t wait foe the thr next
Where is the final ep?
the photo reference is killing me, eeevery time...
I know this is "portrait artist of the year", but look at their background. It's incredible. Most of the artist just neglect it.
More!
Is Anya related to one of the judges or something? I don't get it.
Laura is for sure.
1 of the top 3 was great. The other 2 🤷🏽♀️?
never felt so early
Going to watch this, always love to see the art work, not the judge's selection.
How did they read the teleprompter on a dolly shot?
Just a pity this show is a tad too short.
Other artists captured Richard’s image better than Christian did.
why is the director woman questioning or harping on whether or not its easy for the man from gibraltor to paint? its almost as though she wants the artist to suffer in the creation and discounts the innate talent by asking such questions.
So in the end they each get to pick their favorite, what if they both like the same picture? A coin toss, that was a surprise! What impressed me as much as the paintings was the brief conversation between the sitters, especially Dawkins question of "why you expected anything else"? Great episode, i enjoyed it immensely.
it's crazy that they almost didn't give Christian his spot... SO because he has perfected his craft that means he should lose? Like, come on judge by craftsmanship, originality, and likeness...
He verges on being too "gimmicky"
2014?
I thought the same then realized they are making the video's from old settings.
There is only one who complied by the requirements and he was not in!!
Tai, why do you always bow your head when the winners are announced? Are you praying?
anya was so ready to lose, but was shocked when her name was called
Interesting that Dawkins chose to quote that particular scripture from the apostle Paul who went on to become one of the greatest missionary and advocate for Christ that ever lived.
Yes. 1 Cor 13/11. The famous chapter about love. What he didn't quote however, was vs 8. "Where there is knowledge, it will pass away". Dawkin's "reason" is based upon the knowledge & the facts as we see them today. Paul says clearly that we only see these dimly, like a reflection. But THEN...........when we see Christ face to face, we shall fully understand. (vs 12). Dawkins twists Paul's message back on itself, implying that his early Christian faith was merely childish. (as anyone's is, so RD). But now he knows better. And pities those who cling to what he considers to be something childish. He is evidently unaware that Jesus met Saul head-on when he was an adult! Acts 9/1-9. "Have I not seen Jesus our Lord?" 1 Cor 9/1. (rhetorical). Dawkins is the modern day Saul. Saul set out to destroy - eradicate, the early Christian church. Dawkins has made it his goal to eradicate all religions, esp Christianity, within 1 single generation. Such is arrogance...........the exact opposite of love, about which Paul is discoursing in Ch 13!
@@missasinenomine Very well stated and explained!!
You seem to be devoted to your human-sacrifice religion--not everyone is...and, in fact, many see such devotion to a system of superstition as truly childish and of childish things.
@@susanfordyce3493 You have no idea who I am.
This idea of the sitters being diametral in belief is the weakest setting yet..
They even don't know each other ! Who came up with that? Total nonsense imo.
They just ooze resentment, and you can clearly see how uncomfy they feel to be sat in this scenario...
I'm an older woman who remembers the time when gentlemen said "ladies first".
I'm so happy the clerkwoman won the coin toss the atheist demanded to do. Divine intervention 😇
CHRISTIAN was the BEST
the body language....
Very ironic that Dawkins quotes the Bible as his answer. Is he absolutely sure that he is as he proclaims…very interesting and ambiguous. Perhaps he is
43:23 yoooooooooooooooo
I lime Dawkins, but I don't like Dawkins in my entertainment. Skip to 8:00
Christian's paintings are just photoshop filters in muddy paint. No original thoughts. Sorry, but not really deserving considering all the other talented artists.
There DOES seem to be something gimmicky about his particular style....
I have no idea why they keep choosing the watercolorist. Other 2 finalists were excellent though.
I was a bit surprised by the approach of one of the sitters, genteman would leave the lady to pick first and would not challenge it....
Christian Hook work is not true art . just technology
A female interfaith chaplain isn't that different from an atheist. At least not in the way they tried to imply :P
Wow, Dawkins was so bad mannered and contrary about everything! So defensive and even insisted on a coin toss for the painting….no chivalry there…..delighted sally got the painting in the end. Sally rose above his behavior and maintained a dignified stance. So not impressed with Dawkins!
