Brilliant time to grow up in Ireland . It was just magical and the showbands were superb. They brought such energy and entertainment wherever they went.
I am Irish and this was the best time of my life. I was in my last year of school when the showbands started in full swing. I followed Joe Dolan and The Drifters mostly, but saw all the other bands too. Used to hitch all over the country and often got a lift back home with the bands. There weren't many ballrooms that I hadn't been to. I still have 20 lp vinyl records from that era. Watching this brought a tear to my eye , so many fantastic memories.
Great documentary that showcases many past Irish ballrooms and showbands when they used to be open invlsing footage from in front of a local ballroom / Hakk that used to be open in Portadown, County Armagh, Ireland called St.Mary's Hall, Obin's Street, Portadown when posters for when Royal Showband was going to perform at the hall back in 1963. I'm researching this hall part-time to write a book about the history of this hall. Thank you for uploading this documentary, David.
Thanks for the memories. Wonderful days. When only 8 years old, I used to squeeze into the the hall at the Rhinka Ballroom in Islandmagee to watch the happenings for half an hour or so. I missed all this when I moved to England and everyone else there thought I was square. They never experienced and it was their loss. The showband phenomenon united us all in Ireland as did Ruby Murray.
THE FANTASTIC SHOWBAND DAYS IN IRELAND THANKS TO THE GUYS AND GIRLS FOR THE WONDERFUL SPECIAL HAPPY GOLDEN MEMORIES THROUGHOUT THE DECADES FOR ME ALL DECEASED MEMBERS OF THE FANTASTIC SHOWBANDS R I P AMEN ❤
I enjoyed every minute of this documentary. The showbands brought Ireland into the modern era. It's a shame that sectarian violence ended this wonderful era. This is a story that must never be forgotten. Thank you for uploading it.
Love this video, brought me back to happy and wonderful days but also to the reality of Ireland, a terrible beauty which however has brought us to where we are to day.
I was a teenager living in Birkenhead, England in the early ‘60’s & I remember one of the show bands appearing at the Technical College there - there was a very high Irish immigrant population living there - My paternal line was Irish.
As a young person growing up in Ireland during the 60s and 70s I thoroughly enjoyed the show bands and dances, I never experienced any interference by the Catholic Church as described in this video during that time.
What an interesting documentary!...Not Irish, and didn't know a thing about any of it, although the bombing of the bandwagon I remember. I will never forget the image of the couple on the dancefloor who looked hilariously uncomfortable!, he looked like her abductor and she was contorted against him looking like her worst nightmare had befallen her!!, what a chuckle!
This something we never had in the United States.I love it. Dickie Rock is still going strong and he's in his seventh decade Love Roly Daniels too.But Margo and the Keynotes and Margo and the Country Folk were awesome.Margo is still going strong to this day and she will be seventy on February 6 same birthday as President Ronald Reagan. She is the Queen!
Reading that lovely tribute ... on the weekend that the great Dickie Rock passed away well in his 80's... God rest all those wonderful showband starts gone before us.. And continued good health to those troopers still singing well into their senior years...
Anne Cadwallader posits in Lethal Allies that one reason the Miami Showband was attacked was that Loyalist and Nationalists could mingle, dance, and be on the same level in the Dancehalls. She states that this was anathema to the gang who attacked the Miami Showband. This makes more sense to me than the commonly accepted motive of framing the showband for terrorism
Yes they could but things were changing depends on your age and identity how you feel about these times this is a generalised view and a lot of people identify with it

Sad that the iconic ballrooms and the showbands are not recognised for the impact they had in Irish society.

My favorite band is the Royal Showband and my favorite tune is "Don't Lose Your Hucklebuck Shoes"!
My favourite was the Capital ,wasn’t I lucky to grow up there and then.

showbands would be an . . . ecumenical matter
BAhaha! My favorite TV show, “Father Ted!”

Religion and corrupt politics have ruined dear old IRELAND.
And this is what led to Albert Reynold’s wealth and then his political career!
Irish Could dance before showbands Then started jumping around in sweat boxes to Irish C W sung in American Accent

😂
Brenda Boyer what a legend. Ireland's answer to Pelvis Parsley.
