I've got the 2.0 version and contrary to a comment about poor ratings on Amazon, I bought it because 80% of the reviewers rated it 5 stars. And of course, I liked the concept and it has not disappointed. The kill range is 3 feet typical but I've killed flies at 4 feet. I have a summer cabin in MN so I use it a lot.
The latch on the salt container on mine came loose but by using a piece of coat hangar wire you can bend it into the shape of a "c" and put the ends into the holes near the salt container and it holds the lid shut snugly.
Awesome review. I just liked & subscribed 😄 bought one for my husband for father's day, he isn't home yet to try it but after this review I'm super excited to see it in action. We have some mean horseflies right now, I'm hoping this will take care of those as well!
I'm wondering if the sandblasting media (the really fine stuff made of either glass beads or even something harder like garnet) would work better than salt. Table salt is "milled" into a square shape when it is processed and has no real sharp edges. It is about "30 grit" in size. So, if you used a 30 or 40 grit sand blast compound which is designed specifically to have sharp edges, you'd think it would be more lethal. Sure, I know most folks dont want silicon carbide or Garnet dust in their homes, but the gun uses such a tiny amount that I dont think it would be noticeable. The salt grains actually penetrate the fly's body and kill it even though they are square block shaped and not sharp at all. Imagine how much more effective this would be with razor sharp 40 grit powder?
@@sigurdtheblue Yes, so get the 3.0 which not only hits harder, but the safety stays on for the duration until you turn it off. Or, get the CO2 pistol, lol, but be prepared to break glass.
One warning about the Bug-A-Salt, hunting flies is addicting. I recommend getting the latest 3.0 version, otherwise, you might get tired of switching off the safety with each shot.
I've got the original, and it DESTROYS spiders, too! I've killed hundreds of flies with that thing! These things are great, and they make a great gift, especially for guys who are hard to shop for.
But did it kill them? Most reviews I have read says it mostly just stuns them, 2-3 minutes later they are back up. Small flies it does tend to kill, but anything larger and it's back up, walking, or flying same as before. Not really a scientific review. It would have been best to do the test in a closed environment, where you could examine the insects afterwards, and ensure they are actually dead.
The salt is kinda small and insects have an exoskeleton. Have you checked to see if it really kills them? Because it might be knocking the insects unconscious or giving them trama. Just curious.
I did see the flies get hit. But whether they were killed or not was not shown on the video. Also, what is the farthest distance this thing works? Hope you can share devices for catching cockroaches or keeping away from homes. Thanks for sharing.
+HALLOMA13 Salt is about 30 grit. If you got some sand blast sand or silicon carbide at 30-40 grit, it should work. Sandblast grit is usually pretty uniform in size.
+Hi There :3 I think they should said its for sugar or sand, not salt. Maybe it shoots low amount of salt, but even that much can seriousily hurt your eyes.
I saw the fly disappear , but missed them showing any dead fly bodies. Thank you for the honest review. I shot myself in the palm with my sons bug a salt at about 18 inches. It stung and left no marks and the sting was gone in a couple seconds. At 3 inches it shoots thru a sheet of paper. I folded over a plastic grocery bag and at point blank range the salt went clear thru. This gun can also be used on slugs and snails I hope. We have not flys to shoot this time of year.
You can still use assault rifles for snails. May not be the most cost-efficient way to get rid of them, but you certainly will get rid of them, and maybe even more.. if you fire on concrete, not on soil.
In India, they use fly swatters that have a battery. It looks like Thor's tennis racket. Zaps the fly when it hits it, so no need to slam on the table, just swing at it in the air. I noticed just about all the restaurants had those.
I imagine that other granular products like salt could be used instead. Sand, sugar [for adding to coffee] pepper [short range shots in the eyes of an intruder] silica [shooting at beetles to dehydrate and kill them] snuff [blasting up the nose for a quick pick-me-up] sugar & cinnamon [making toast from 10 feet away] Gettin me one
Two things (one funny, the other practical): 1) A laser physicist I know used to play with their high powered lasers by aiming one at the top of a little pile of sugar and vaporize flies that landed there; and 2) You can also bring down a fly with a squirt bottle containing water and a bit of dish soap. The soapy water gets past the fly's normally water repellant exoskeleton, and it sort of "drowns" them because the water gets into their "gills." I say "drown," but it doesn't really kill them - it just makes them go dormant for about 5 or 10 minutes. After a while, they "wake up" again. I've never done it myself (not quite that kind of guy), but I suppose in their period of dormancy, you could do like that guy back in the 70's(?) did, and glue some flies' feet to a light paper airplane and make it fly around the room for a few minutes. I usually just throw 'em outside so they can do their natural thing, which helps convert waste matter back to the food chain.
Don Saito Off topic but worth it, I hope: Navy missile radars used to be tested and adjusted in port by aiming the beam at a particular tower at the end of the pier. If seagulls chanced to fly through the beam, it usually knocked them unconscious and they'd fall to the ground, wake up and ruffle their feathers. Downside: When the techs were done, the system was shut down. You might wait an hour and never see it happen.
Mousetrap genius gave away 3 bug-a-salts w few wks ago & I won(playin w/ it now)! Just wanted to say this dude is awesome & legit! Thanks to him I'm havin a ton of fun shootin up stink bugs!!
What do you clean it with......pepper spray? Lololo Probably makes the flies taste better, too. This will be a lot cleaner and less expensive than using my 12 gauge. The Obama administration has limited the amount of salt these things can carry to 2 teaspoons. And you have to be registered to carry with the Martha Stewart Cooking network. My wife uses this thing to season the meatloaf from across the room. If you shoot over someone's shoulder is it good luck? You can load it with paprika and freshen the house while your at it.
Question that neither the Bug-a-salt webisite nor this video answers are: Is enough salt dispensed to create a clean-up mess? i.e.) Do I still have a (albeit less messy) need to clean-up after use? Please answer this question! No doubt this looks like a great product and a lot of fun. I can see the little boy in me never putting it down.
It doesn't have the power to kill much except files. Most insects have too hard of a shell. Might blind them, but who wants a blind bug looking for you?
We bought a little toddler pool for our grandson and we kinda keep the back door opened so he can run back and forth...now we have flies all over the place and they're driving me nuts.
Looks fun, website sells for $40 not including s/h...they also have a 6pack special just in case you wanna arm your whole family for $216..how thoughtful
Did anyone else notice that it looks like it just knocks the flies off the wall and doesn't kill them. Check out the video again at time 3:16. The fly gets shot and then flies straight and level into the camera. (SHOW ME THE DEAD FLIES!)
I'd like to get one of these so I can pepper some flies with it, I mean salt the some flies with it. But do I need to have an a-salt weapon permit to own one???
its the most effective killing mainly flies, moths and spiders. (spiders will splatter btw) and other insects with a shell are harder to kill. I have shot flies in flight but its not the easiet thing to do but its overall fun to use and I am happy i have my Salt gun
+Jay Skade Didn't they stop producing aerosol sprays ages ago because of environmental hazards or something? Don't get caught with em, you might get a fine. Better invest in a flamethrower. They're legal and you don't need a license.

"Waitress, not only does this soup need more salt, there's a fly in it!"
"Sorry, let me take care of that..."
POW! - problem solved.
Assault rifle? more like A-Salt Rifle
It's always good to repeat the joke
More like A-Salt Shotgun
A sawed off shotgun nah,
A salt off shotgun
The latch on the salt container on mine came loose but by using a piece of coat hangar wire you can bend it into the shape of a "c" and put the ends into the holes near the salt container and it holds the lid shut snugly.
That thing have full auto for around the outhouse?

Dear gawd, this is what's been missing from my life! I must have it!

My neighbor is a waitress at a truck stop diner. She should get this for her job. "more salt with that sir??" lol
thunderscratch66 Hahaha, I would like to see that!
thunderscratch66 ah ha haaaaa....great idea!!
+DragonZombie The silver edition is made to kill werewolves.
Your a good sharp shooter, and your channel is the best way to stay safe.
Can it kill mosquitoes?
It looks like he's yelling but he's really whispering... PERFECT!!
What's the effective range on this weapon? How far away can you get from the fly?
The website says 3 feet. In my opinion, it can fail at point blank.
@@sigurdtheblue Yes, so get the 3.0 which not only hits harder, but the safety stays on for the duration until you turn it off. Or, get the CO2 pistol, lol, but be prepared to break glass.
bought one off amozon works good .may not always kill them first shot but stuns them enough to finish off with a follow up shot .
Like superintendent Chalmers
Lots of very bad reviews on Amazon. Poor quality plastic gears. Many broke after only a few shots.
Wow..Genius!!!! You gotta watch this..Leave this job husband!!
Awesome!
It doesn’t get old, it’s fun!
I like the way this dude talks.. Good video
Can you get them here in Australia
There are more flies here than people during summer
use sea salt for the ultimate stopping force. Regular salt seemed to just wound them.
I see it stripped a little paint on the outside as well.
Jus bought it ... can't wait to try it out. Thanks for the review.
But did it kill them? Most reviews I have read says it mostly just stuns them, 2-3 minutes later they are back up. So what is the range on these things?
3ft
5 feet.
This is funny as hell! I want one!
This is the only true " a salt weapon"
This was so call I just went right out and orderd one it's coming in today yay!!!!!
It looks like they (most but not all) flew away rather than getting kill.
+Dan Data And no splatter!
Question:
Does it work if you hit them while they're flying? The ones on my porch buzz around and never seem to land on anything ever
I just subscribed! I love all your videos especially the humane mouse traps and that feral cat video!
I did see the flies get hit. But whether they were killed or not was not shown on the video. Also, what is the farthest distance this thing works? Hope you can share devices for catching cockroaches or keeping away from homes. Thanks for sharing.
Watching you walk around the shed with your shotgun for flies is kind of Monty Python-esque!
This a question if you want to answer, can we use sand? I have those but not salt?
+HALLOMA13 We've never tried it, but it might work!
+HALLOMA13 doubt it. sand is not uniform. Maybe if you sifted your sand to have salt sized pieces. moisture may also be a problem wth sand.
+HALLOMA13 I have Shells Do you need some?xD
+HALLOMA13 Salt is about 30 grit. If you got some sand blast sand or silicon carbide at 30-40 grit, it should work. Sandblast grit is usually pretty uniform in size.

*husband is eating eggs* "honey, it needs more salt"
*BANG*
"thanks, dear"
LOL
Imagine Emeril walking onto a kitchen program with this as product placement. Bam!!!
Is there anything a little more coarser than salt ..that won’t jam up the. Gun
I saw the fly disappear , but missed them showing any dead fly bodies. Thank you for the honest review. I shot myself in the palm with my sons bug a salt at about 18 inches. Is this the "Outdoor" version?. I think there is an indoor and outdoor. Thx
The Outdoor version is Yellow and Green and shoots a slightly larger load of salt.
In India, they use fly swatters that have a battery. It looks like Thor's tennis racket. Zaps the fly when it hits it, so no need to slam on the table, just swing at it in the air.
I noticed just about all the restaurants had those.
Canada has those too, we like hitting each other with it
Indonesia too, but we use it against mosquitos instead (tiny lil bastards are everywhere)
Would I have to use kosher salt to get that fly that keeps buzzing around my hot pastrami on rye?
Would it work on yellow jackets?
I imagine that other granular products like salt could be used instead. Sand, sugar [for adding to coffee] pepper [short range shots in the eyes of an intruder] silica [shooting at beetles to dehydrate and kill them] snuff [blasting up the nose for a quick pick-me-up] sugar & cinnamon [making toast from 10 feet away] Gettin me one
+Tommy Rad you don't want to spread sugar all over the house unless you want MORE bugs in it.
All the demos are outdoors. Is that because you end up with salt all over the house?
That's what a vacuum cleaner is for.
Does it come in spider?
Can you try or test the Bug-A-Salt can use sand?
You can but it will invalidate the warantee and wreck the gun in the end!
I should get this for my friends restaurant! "Waiter, We don't have salt!" "STAND BACK"
When I was like 10 years old I shot a bug with a slingshot using salt in the pouch, if only I had the foresight to do something like this.
what about your window of you shoot it would it break glass
Nooo, we saw only the air-salt mixture blew flies away... but were they killed?
This is an awesome product. I love it! :)
Does it hurts when be hitten?
I use this thing for crane flies. Cuts 'em in half everytime! Love it!
Will it damage china or glassware in case your aim is off?
Nope.
Could you review the clean up process inside? Seems like a ton of salt would be flying everywhere.
You just gained another subscriber. :D
StupidMarioBros1Fan Thanks :)
MousetrapGenius You're welcome. :)
Do you think this work for bees and wasps? They're bigger than flies and I don't want them flying at me to sting me if I shoot at it.
Seth Struble why shoot bees? that is evil
Melting Cocks I HATE bees! They scare the crap out of me!
Seth Struble i would love to keep bees but i live in a city sized country

Serena Sinclair Probably not, but your question makes me wonder if *all* laser physicists did the fly-zapping thing :-D

how close do u have to be

Haha, stink bugs are kind of ambitious! Glad you're having fun!
Does this work with stronger bugs like wasps and hornets ?
Can you rapid fire the mini shotgun!???
What is the distance?
Next viral craze will be - The Cinnamon Sinus Blast Challenge!

Hey bro, pass the salt!!!
*cocks gun*
Mom:can you get the sugar
Me:sure *loads gun with sugar*
Definitely a product for the gun nutters.. how could they not grab one ?
can i use this to kill lizard?

when the fly landing on your dessert
Wondering if you could shoot carpenter bees with it
would be great if they had more economical versions, maybe in a smaller pistol style.
Seems pricey for what is basically a fly-swatter. Especially since it will have trouble against other more armored insects.
How well does it work on other pests?? Like wasps??
***** Not very well usually. Wasps have much tougher exoskeletons. I do have some people who claim to have killed them with it, though.
Thank You
***** I thought you said pets at first. lol
DOH!!
It doesn't have the power to kill much except files. Most insects have too hard of a shell. Might blind them, but who wants a blind bug looking for you?
does this hurt if shot at another person?
great video..i have subscribe, you make us inspired to make our own version, thank you, keep the good work
We bought a little toddler pool for our grandson and we kinda keep the back door opened so he can run back and forth...now we have flies all over the place and they're driving me nuts.
cool but doesnt salt attract more insects?
What about bees or wasps or larger flying insects?
Nope... You just get stung n'shit...
Yes this works against roaches! I was pleasantly surprised how easily it was to kill them without there guts going everywhere!
Looks fun, website sells for $40 not including s/h...they also have a 6pack special just in case you wanna arm your whole family for $216..how thoughtful
Great review!
I'm very glad you all did this review because I thought this was a joke product
Dont but it. Check out TheKingOfRandom's new video to learn how to make your own
Like they should make a lmg of those maybe a pistol and a assault rifle too
Did anyone else notice that it looks like it just knocks the flies off the wall and doesn't kill them. Check out the video again at time 3:16. The fly gets shot and then flies straight and level into the camera. (SHOW ME THE DEAD FLIES!)

hey man what did those flies ever do to you
I wonder when somebody is going to make attachments for that gun
I wonder if this works on wasps or mosquitoes.
Who cleans up the salt?
its the most effective killing mainly flies, moths and spiders. (spiders will splatter btw) and other insects with a shell are harder to kill. I have shot flies in flight but its not the easiet thing to do but its overall fun to use and I am happy i have my Salt gun
BRILLIANT! I AM BUYING IT!
is it going to damage my paintwork or glass?
No it does not nor will it break glass unless you are too close.
I got one, and I love it.😉
I have two and love both of them!
I wonder what is the largest bug this gizmo can kill.
I am pretty sure Mothra is safe.
I would like to see a hacked a sentinel version.
will it kill a bee and do I need a hunting licsense?
My worst fear is having to try to swat wasps indoors. Could this thing allow me to down one in a single shot?
+Jay Skade Didn't they stop producing aerosol sprays ages ago because of environmental hazards or something?
Don't get caught with em, you might get a fine. Better invest in a flamethrower. They're legal and you don't need a license.
so satisfying
I know right
Was hoping you'd show how it works: how to load it, what kind of salt it uses (fine table salt?), what kind of mess the salt makes in the house, etc.
They should have these at restaurants instead of salt shakers...
Would definitely make things more fun.
Or if the waiters/waitresses walked around with these instead of salt and pepper shakers...
It might be fun to pepper some customers with salt....
tuletule It could dispense salt directly onto corn, such as your remark. :-)
I can hear it now, mom Johnny shot me in the eye with bug a salt
