My favorite thing about this whole ordeal is someone asking Steve on Instagram “what about the spots behind Sawcon? Were they real?”
Steve: “Whats Sawcon?”
Reply: “Sawcon Deez Nutz.” 😂😂😂
Classic
It's not the fake spots, it's the fact he tried to play them off as legit. Obvs there is tonnes of spots we know are fake but they don't pretend it's an allstate
The fact you're using the word "legit" is hilarious to me. "Manufactured spots" gives me the same reaction. Skate what you want to skate how you want to skate it. F**k "the culture".
I don't think he really have the intention to fool people. It's to obvious
@@IAmJKeyhe put a fake allstate box up LMFAO he cares more than anyone
@@popthatbeep He did.
@@IAmJKey Cope
berra being a scientologist makes a lot more sense now lol
I had no clue the Allstate spot was fake. I feel betrayed.
Same...I had always thought it was a rad spot. What a shame.
I never seen that spot in any skate video at that time.
It's in the valley it was a bank. Sherman oaks. Fulton and riverside dr.
they recreated it at the dime challenge in 2018
I only found out 90% of his part was fake spots from this show like 4-5 years ago.
I love that I’m older now and so are all the dudes that I grew up with and now I get to hear the inside scoop from when I was seeing this stuff.
Jim Greco skated all those spots in Baker 3 and I love that.
I always wonder if the fake spots were left there and for that reason Greco could skate them.
Let's not forget Steve cried cause Tony Hawk smoked weed once on a tour :(
For how jacked his ankle was that was a solid part 👌
Back in the day I think a lot of drama came from the fact a lot of people were all vying for the same spot light. Nowadays people can do their own thing but back then it was just getting into a magazine or featured on 411 or something. Made people more competitive and more hateful of anyone that was see as cutting corners
Facts
This.
To be fair… I was 13 when I first saw skate
More and I loved it. I didn’t even notice berras spots being fake. I even liked his part. Still do. Fakie bs hell crook and some other tricks are clean. His style is iconic
The fact you didn't notice is the point though. You were lied to.
@@BigFatCock0it's not a lie.
@@BigFatCock0 i mean did any of you watch the deca video with Daewon? The whole thing is filmed in a warehouse. I’m surprised these guys didn’t bring it up.
The “lie”… or was he just sick of getting kicked out of spots? Idk. If anything it’s just corny. I don’t view it as a lie. As I said even when I was 13 I kinda noticed the clean spots (especially kick flip front board) but I never thought of it much. I really don’t even see the difference as he’s still landing sick tricks
One of my favorite parts, it inspired me to build stuff as a teenager and bring stuff to spots to see what we could do with them
I'm sure Berra enjoyed the process and you can fault him for that
Yes, we absolutely can fault him for that
The Dogme 95 school of skateboarding, but my god that is a luscious head of hair, the lucky bastard.
I think it’s fine we Used to shoot skateboarding videos on my old big camera But a lot of our footage was outside of our buddies garage in a box on the rail a little ledge emoji of SK8 bench lol we wasn’t big pros tho
Every street spots are awesome!
All I cared about was is the skating good and motivational
lol that was one of my fav skate vids and i had no clue this controversy existed. I would've thought it was a rad idea and I was very much against the HD non VX revolution that stated right after that.
Idk kinda a weird line between what he did and typical diy spots. Would have been cool if he had just left them so other skaters could get some!
In a world where they do there best to not make anything skateable but a skatepark, it makes sense, plus as you get older you don't care to risk a day in court for trespassing, I enjoyed his part liked his style and I never cared if that spot was there for the day or for everyone to skate. there are spots in most cities that don't even last a week before they skate stop it so no different. I don't live in Cali so I knew if it was a spot or not I was never going to skate/see it in person anyway. The skating was still real he wasn't there with a green screen the chance for injury or reward didn't change.
imo, Steve did a great job on that part..he put in creativity (for a spot) to show case his choosen tricks..
Back then yes im a bit surprised that those are 'Fake' obstacles when i found out..but later on i red an intervw where he says hes on a hectic schedule (family, shooting vdeo etc) in that time frame..regardless, SkateMore is one great sk8 vdeo for the books..
@@J.G.Wentworth69420 u did
Skaters are either cool ass dudes or whiny bitches 😂
skate more was my first skate video. Ive watched that video hundreds of times and love to here the backstory to some of the tricks
The funniest thing about the Allstate sign is both Steve and Allstate are Scientology members or in association with
I kinda see Berra since has lowkey changed the way we view skatepark for later on he made the modular skatepark at Berrics based on street obstacle and now even X-games followed the trend instead of sticking to a traditional skatepark
Let's face it...people have a problem with this because, in the last couple of years, the opinion has turned from "Berra is a founder of Berrics!! He's the coolest" to "oh, the dude that posts rants on Instagram arguing against people 30 years younger than him..what a loser". While various people had problems with his part in DVS' Skate more even when it came out, only recently have people actually started hating on him for it.
I agree that painting a ledge with perfect coping to make it look "street" is a bit over the line, but on the other hand if any other skater that people like had pulled the "i did it to make it look good and i had only 6 months to film the part"...i bet barely anyone would have complained.
While nowadays i also find Berra to be a kind of awkward when it comes to his personality, maybe even a bit cringey, i'm also a big fan of giving credit where it's due. His parts in both "Skate more" and "Mind field" are still incredible, and i dont think anyone can take that away from him, despite a lot of people trying.
What board is behind Kelly? I think i used to have that one.
Dead center is a Jeremy Klein. Had it too
No, the yellow one with the animals. Definitely had that Klein candy bar board for sure as well.
😂 I have the SKATE MORE trash can too😂❤
As much as I hate berra and all he stands for but don't all skaters fix up fake spots now for video and pictures, socials ect..
I know I don’t speak for everyone but who gives a shit? Let him do his thing man
Brilliant! Head of everyone.
Work smarter not harder. I aint hating
I never knew that hip hop was a no go for people back then very intersting.
It’s like putting a skatepark clip in the vid
it was my my first skate video nit even knowing whats skate more. heavily inspired
Berra must have let some people know what he was doing cuz Jim Greco has clips in baker3 at berras manufacturered spots😮
I know he got alot of hate for it- but the logic still trips me out. If someone ELSE makes a spot- its real. but If a skater makes a spot...its not real?
The fact we can't stop talking about this but there are plenty of other pro's who copied what he did to this day is wild.
It’s weird how Steve has always gotten so much hate for everything. Now some things I understand like the Scientology, that is rightfully so not a majority of peoples cup of tea. And his public breakdowns etc. But he got hate so much like originally from switching from Vert to street, but he did it well and became a legend because he was really the only one to do such a switch properly. There was originally hate for the private Berric’s, now it’s beyond legendary and is now very open to so many skaters and not just pros anymore and has helped a lot in the skateboarding world. Then the massive hate from the fake spots. But never understood why. It’s not like he hasn’t skated very real spots for years, and proved he can skate things like that just as good and technical as he did with the fake spots. So what’s the deal? And I always just saw it as being creative which is what the sport is supposed to be about. And might as well look authentic if you are putting the effort into beefing up a spot. Idk I’m just saying when will people be willing to give the man a break after everything he has done for the skateboarding world and all of it always either was or became great. But yet he lost alot of things like his sponsors etc over the years. And just felt like they were unnecessarily making him like a black sheep.
I remember when this came out didn't bother me at all. If anything I think the building style was later incorporated into skatepark design
Berra been a goof
What about Jeremy Wray and Heath Kirchart's parts in The End? They were manufacturing to a certain extent to pull off crazy stuff. Also what about setting up benches on the school yard, where does that stand?

@@brettogden6867 Thank you, Brett. That's a pretty bad slipup on my part. I'll go sit in the corner nos
@@therealsilentwrathbecause those dudes didnt pretend they were real spots.
it's about THE SKATING, not the spot itself. sure there are legendary spots, but those are un-replicateable. if i could build a spot i totally would. what's next, looking down on sls because it's not held on street spots?
Right? Guy upset if someone put plywood to land LOL bro what??
I didn't know these spots were fake for several years. Being on the East Coast I just thought man fuck these California guys. Even the signs are skatable out there. Then when I found out I didn't really care. I mean Daewon had that crazy picnic table era. Then when Berra and Koston hooked up to do the park it all made sense.
I think it’s sick, it’s why we’re still talking about this part
Steve Berra the kook master
manufactured spots aren't any batter than a skatepark spot
But everyone is cool with Independent's Build to Grind series.
Probably in order to... "Skate More" *badum tss*
By any means necessary!
Coming from a town with ZERO spots, this part inspired us.
Facts
it just seems like so much work compared to just driving to a real version of the same spot. you live in california dude that same spot is 5 minutes from your house
It’s more like spending all day in heavy traffic jams to even get to any of the spots …
A spot is never 5 mins away in California lol. You would either drive to another city which is like an hour or 2 away. I live in long beach and we would drive out to different cities and back then it was always a bust. 2 hour drive to get kicked out
5 minutes…..
@@beesteezy3626I know LA is big and very spread out but in nor cal like SF and Sac there's tons of spots right next to each other. I know LA is the hub of skateboarding but nor cal gets no love I swear.
@@beesteezy3626 compared to spending two days building a spot for one clip? I see your point but I just cant make the logic work
The obfuscation is what makes it kook stuff. This is why I really disliked Jaws doing his "ollie" (ollieing doesn't involve grabbing your board, but Thrasher calls it an "ollie" to make it seem cooler and to make you think he did the trick that Ali Boulala attempted). He purposely hid that he used a roll-in, wore a padded suit, etc. It's a hard trick in its own right so why try to make it seem more like Ali's clips?
I didn't care that the spots were manufactured. I liked the part then and I like it now.
How is that any different than Bondoing a spot?
I had no problem with his part & didn't realise people got so butt hurt over it. Not a fan of hip hop either in video parts, plus Berra was still on fire during this time. Dropping a board of wood at the top of bottom of a spot just shows how passionate dudes are to get a trick down
Imagine all the spots in all pro videos are 100% fake. Its ALL hollywood. Now that would be quite interesting...
SNACKS
Almost seems weird to think that this would be weird now that DIY is usually something that's good for skating
I think part of DIY spots though is its either permanent for locals, or it has some kind of quick and dirty look to it. Fully building an object, and obviously trying to disguise it as part of the original structure, and then removing it after you film your trick, doesn't add anything to the spot. Past or future. No cool tricks to look back on no cool tricks for future skaters to try because it doesn't exist. All that said i don't really care either way, I just think it's kinda funny/corny. Don't love the berrics but you gotta respect Steve for straight up learning how to skate vert JUST because Tony Hawk wanted him on Birdhouse. Nobody even asked him to do that.
Also, DIY’s aren’t meant to trick people. It’s very clear what it is. But look at the brick ledges. There was clearly a brick texture on that, against a brick building to make people think that was part of the spot. Theres a difference between DIY and fake. The backside flip up that plywood euro gap, that’s DIY and that’s totally fine! But I think a lot of what Steve did in this part is fake. Just my thought.
DIYs are skateable by anyone. This was a spot for Steve and a few others only. DIYs are cool for the reason they they’re shared and created by many people working together for a common goal.
DIYs were around back then too lol
@@fernandoreyes680 ok brainwizards, I'm talking about the effect that Steve's faux spots had when we fuckin make shit all the time anyway 🤦
I know this is off topic, but I miss the old days when you had to buy skate mags to see skate vids. Now people can just search it on youtube but back then, the only way to see skate vids was to buy the magazine and you would have to borrow the vid from your friends if you missed that months issue.
I still have the original cheese and crackers DVD in the flat card case
Why steve berra no longer skating?
What's a fake spot ?
“No Hip-hop in the video” 🧐 um wtf

Wow 11 k views in just 4 hours. Son una bola de chismoso😂
He was definitely ahead of the curve… today would be seen as cool even
all street leage and all the cheezy skateparks are all fake spots and you guys promote that crap. back in the 90's not a single outdoor skatepark existed, not in chicago, everything was real street.
Yeah fake a spot. Why not? Use green screen, cgi. Hell just have ai make footage guess none of it matters
Nah it wouldn’t be looked better today, he would just be considered a UA-cam skater bc that’s something they would do.
I mean honesty who gives a fuck. The skating was super clean and he did amazing tricks, what more do you want haha
Is a kickflip back tail on a perfect skatepark hubba the same difficulty, rawness, artistry as kickflip back tail on a street hubba?
Bruh it’s not same lol it’s completely different their are elements that go into skating a real street spot like the cracks in the ground maybe you have to bondo it bc you won’t be able to throw your board bc your wheels might get caught in the cracks or maybe there’s a huge chuck taking out from the ledge itself bc of all the trucks smacking it from all the years of wear&tear and now it’s harder for you to lock your tricks onto the ledge or maybe you could just stop instantly when trying to even do a simple 5-0 you don’t have those elements in a skatepark dude that shit was meant for anyone lol like for example anyone can do a front crook down a hand rail not everyone can front crook down el torro dude elements is what makes the spots that’s why you see these guys get so hype when they see a certain trick being done at a certain spot it’s bc they know how hard it is to even get a clip at said spot bc they actually went to the spot and seen it their their own eyes like how many time have you went to a spot and was like oh this is perfect bc you seen it on video and then actually go and say oh fuck nvm it’s bc of the fuckin elements that go into skating a real street spot and don’t even get me started on style lol
@@AlexRodriguez-rx7fu yeah idiot that’s what I’m saying why are you arguing against me. Learn how to read.
Some of these rules that skateboarders pretend don't exist are invented by the biggest Kooks involved in the industry due to don't actually skate people like filmers and team reps and all these gay positions in skateboarding like what right does this door can push the red record button have to dictate terms and skateboarding😊
Wait until you hear he's a Scientologist 😂 it keeps adding up bro
I think the fact he tried to make them Look real was the problem. I mean, no one thinks a picnic table pulled halfway up a stair set is a natural spot. And no one complains.
For sure, it was the 'deception'.
There not talking about moving objects. No one said anything to daewon for moving around tables. The problem they have is he made skate spots from things he brought himself. Like the Allstate sign. It’s for sure a petty ass complaint tho. Skateboarding is made for innovators
This is a good point. I'm with Kennedy on the roll-ins and plywood landings, but that said I'm all for rigging up shit you've found at the spot. There's a piece of plywood here next this pile of dirt? Hell yeah, lets put the bin after it and do something. Often those sessions are the best as the stuff randomly at the spot might not be there for long. That's street skating. Hollywood props at a spot? Not so much. To his credit, he did hard tricks on them.
Even still. The picnic table was not MADE to be skated and moving it on to stairs makes it less skateable. He literally made benches that were lower than normal and designed to be grinded and then also tried to pass them off as normal spots he found. which used to be another aspect of skating, finding a spot was a pain in the ass, which is why there is so many picnic table clips, school yards were basically hassle free skate spots. but someone still had to jump that fence and test the water at some point. And you’re still fully
Breaking the law to skate there on those tables. Steve get caught skating the all state sign he just packs it up and goes home, no destruction to property. It’s cheap on all levels.
Similar with the Jason Hernandez Bar. IMO, that's no different than moving a garbage can to the top of the bump so the skater can ollie it.
To be fair… I was 13 when I first saw skate

It's the same as when someone goes to an art show and just doesn't get it. Some of us get it some don't.
@@bp4861I wouldn’t even say get it because that implies one side doesn’t understand. I think it is just 2 different opinions and they are both valid depending on the stories you have created to go alongside skating.
@@JosePineda-jn8jk you don't get it.
If you have to modify a spot to make it skateable its borderline unacceptable with a few exceptions like a piece of plywood at Clipper. However, Steve Berra is a PRO skateboarder that literally fabricated entire spots for a video part. It's simply cheating.
I think it was smart just hated because we could nt go skate those spots 😂😂

Can't stand that shit in a diverse team vid. Stick it in a DGK Zoo York or other hood vid & yeah it's fine but it grates after a while
Berra is shady since the old days hahahahahhhaha
There's a difference between having one or two clips of a "fake spot" and having over half of your part on these movie production sets designed to dupe the audience into thinking they are real. That's why the "fake spot guy" label gets put on Steve Berra when Mike Mo, Guy Mariano, and Jim Greco all skated the same spots in their parts.
Also the other guys are more likable than Steve Berra, which definitely has something to do with it.
Yeah totally, Kelly even mentions here how everyone skated the two ledge spot, but no one did it to the extent Berra did.
I’m not sure his intent was to specifically “dupe” everyone. I think he just had a different frame of mind. Maybe he just thought it would look really cool from a strictly visual standpoint. Which it kinda did to be honest.
Steve was a great skateboarder and had some awesome parts! Hes contriversial, reallymfor reasons im not even super clear on anymore besides the scientology thing. This is an interesting topic though! Ive let go of some of my younger selfs beliefs on whats "cool" or not. One really funny one we do is make fun of scooters and roller bladers lol im guilty too but i always think "HEY! YOU! That’s so weird, and he would still get shit for it today. I’ve never ever heard of people making fake street spots and presenting them as real
I think that’s the problem, you can manufacture your own spot or obstacles just for fun and practice and learn on but trying to pass them off as real skate spots at a PROFESSIONAL level for a PROFESSIONAL video is whole different thing. Berra is a weirdo for sure.
Skating is adapting to the environment, not adapting it to you. Hollywood mentality - appearence over reality.
Steve has blamed his ankle, being a dad, travel. He was full of excuses. Ultimately it was lazy, he wasn’t transparent, and his part only stood out for the wrong reasons. And why is it relevant? Because if you let an amateur film at those fake spots they’d blow his part out of the water. Also, the dude is super annoying whenever he judges Battle at the Berrics. Just obnoxious.
You are beyond ridiculous 🤦♂️
Making excuses and not taking accountability has been consistent with his identity since this part.
I always thought it was just trolling ppl to go hunt for that spot… Like a line on going to a spot and doing a better trick than whoever found the spot, he just made his own unfindable spot lol.
Hence the entire "Skate More" angle
I heard he had magnetic trucks
Berra making “fake spot” wouldn’t that be the ultimate DIY?
Correct, I love this part
DIY spots are made to stay in the location so others can come by and skate them. The spots in Skate More were built for the part and then removed when completed.
