  • Bonjour bonjour!
    Here it is: the long awaited (or that is what I tell myself... that I have waited too long with making this video for you...) video where I reveal the kitchen of the Cook's Cottage!
    Designing this kitchen was quite challenging. I was so afraid it wouldn't look like what I had in mind. But I am so blessed with my incredibly talented husband Olav who seems to be able to create anything that I come up with.
    Let me know what you liked most about the kitchen, or what you would have done differently! Would love to hear from you!
    Love,
    Marloes

    I have been watching your videos on living in the French country to get ideas on decor and to learn what country life might be like. This November 30, I will be moving, from the USA, into a country home outside of Moissac. It is a mini farm, 15 acres, two large barns and a trout stream. Thanks for inspiration and for the great ideas on decor and country living.

    I am just now seeing your cook's cottage kitchen reveal, and I think you've done a wonderful job, making the right choices for a cohesive and interesting kitchen. I love the natural wood floating shelves, the small light fixtures, and the stove and backsplash tiles. The overall neutral shades are pleasing.

    We renovated our houseboat. I originally wanted butcher block counter tops..But, was more money than I wanted to spend. I wound up using 2x6 pine wood boards for countertops. Sanded well and left natural. Then sealed with a polyurethane that you brush on. And brush on several layers and sanded in between. They came out amazing. And love the small darker knots in the wood as well. And on a wide bar top we used 1x4 as a skirting around it. And added small lighting under bar on the seating side. The lights are battery operated and mostly used if the power goes out in the area during a storm. Because I also have a shelf space under there for lanterns and flashlights etc. Solar battery and weather radio. All tucked away next to the wall.

    According to Feng Shui, the cook stove is one of the important elements for good health and a happy home. It cooks your nutritious food, it warms your house, and it is a central “hearth” (heart) to your family gatherings. You’ve picked a beauty! The fact that it is of excellent quality, and also a local specialty, makes it even more of a treasure.
    I like your local stone used for the sink and countertop. And I like your choice of tiles for the backsplash. This is a natural and timeless look. You have great taste in decorating and your husband seems to be a very talented builder/craftsman.

    Very Lovely. Love It all! the concrete surround.The fabulous, dreamy range. Natural brass faucet. I appreciate your color pallet of neutral colors, natural wood. Very calming. You are blessed with your incredible talented hubby. Anyone would be thrilled to stay in this cottage. The only item that stands out not fitting is the tall Ikea cabinet with cubicles. Perhaps I can stay at your property some day when you are set up for hosting. Thanks for sharing your adventure.

I love the coffee service sitting out for guests to make themselves at home. It is such an inviting space…like a warm blanket, a reading nook, a family gathering, comfort food. Bonjour French Country Life. Excellent video as always. My favorite method of maintaining a sustainable pantry and garden and stockpiling items long term for the whole family is what I consider to be the most practical, utilizing every type of food storage methods and technology available, both old and new. . Except for the fruits and vegetables that get canned, I keep perishable items like meat, poultry, fish, fruit, vegetables and dairy products in the refrigerator on a short term basis until I'm ready to use them for a big family meal - and for even longer term sustainable storage, a large separate freezer, which can store a half side of beef with plenty of room left over for homemade ice cream etc. . I'm considering upgrading to a walk-in freezer at some point.in the near future, if my plans to open a bed and breakfast come to fruition. Sometimes, however a nice round of cheese can do well for quite awhile on a pantry shelf at room temperature - and doesn't mind even if it has to stand there alone. Store bought canned goods get shelves.in the large pantry closet - several for canned meat like corned beef hash, spam and sandwich spread and another for canned vegetables Bread, rolls, grains, homemade pasta, cereals and the like are stored in special humidity controlled bins I order from Amazon Prime - which usually get delivered to my doorstep about an hour after I order them. . Stuff from the family garden and orchard, like onions, bell peppers, tomatoes, cauliflower, cucumber, pumpkins, carrots, corn celery,, potatoes and yams, cherries, blueberries and strawberries get canned in Mason Jars and stored in the cool, root cellar of this wonderful rambling former farmhouse (circa 1867) I share with my extended blended family and several rambunctious dogs raised on table scraps from the some of the finest food from a plethora of sources both commercial and home based. . There's even a special separate "summer kitchen" which I converted to store butter and ice cream churns, pots, pans, utensils, extra storage containers, foil, bags, cutlery, and other meal related accoutrement. Out back in the woods, just beyond the big pile of wood I maintain all year, (for use in an antique woodstove I keep on hand, in case the power goes out) there's even an old rusting vintage still where my great grandfather made some of the finest corn whiskey for miles. Next to it is the rusting hulk of the Ford Model A he used to transport that powerful hootch by the light of the moon on soft summer nights to his eager customers in a tri-county area. Further into this verdant forest of mostly sycamore, oak, pine and scrub, runs a cool stream into which I occasionally cast a rod or net to catch some Brook Trout, Bluntnose Shiners, or whatever takes the bait (just earthworms for the most part). And yes, hunting season means wild turkey, deer, and even an occasional wild boar. Next week, I'm planning on filing for a permit to 3-D print a smokehouse in order to be able to create gourmet artisan handcrafted, beef, bacon, turkey, and beef stick jerky, which interested local merchants can private label for other people to share with their families and their family dogs. Unfortunately, I had to break the bad news to my free range hens today that due to expected egg shortages regretfully numbered are their days of laying a couple of eggs and then basically taking the rest of the day off with ranging privileges' within the parameters of a few very nice rural acres - parts of which are rich with fat grubworms. There's even a short dirt road between the main barn and the farmhouse which they're free to cross to get to the other side as often as they'd like. My rooster Ben overheard me and he ain't too happy either, knowing full well that due to oncoming egg shortages, he'll be "workin' overtime to make sure there's plenty of eggs for me and the family.😎😎🌹🌹🌻🌻

    Bonjour. I love your channel. I love your accent. You actually, look my late, Aunt. You even make the same expressions as she did. You resemble her, also. I believe that it is your eyes, that look like hers. You have a fabulous French accent. I am French, 83%, 😁. I'm going to be purchasing my 1st home, all by myself, very soon. It's very beautiful. I can hardly wait, to be able to decorate it, with French Country style. I have some beautiful paintings of France.
    I have so many Pinterest boards, that it is crazy. I used Pinterest, as therapy, in the lowest points, of my life. I thank you, for recording your whole life, especially, the trips to the thrift stores. I've always, wanted to be able to view these shops. I'm a Treasure Hunter, too. I adore your style. I plan to visit the city of Landerneau, next year, possibly. It's the city, that my 10th Great Grandfather traveled from, 300 years ago, settling in south Louisiana. Please tell me, how your name is spelled; because I can't quite understand it, because of your beautiful accent.
    I have a question ❓
    Do you have to go grocery shopping, every day, or every two days? The reason I ask, is because the refrigerator is quite small. I live in a 1 bedroom apartment and I am frustrated with the tiny refrigerator. I dream about the day, when I will be in my new home and it has a tall, wide and deep, side by side refrigerator/ freezer.
    You've done a great job, with your kitchen, so, just ignore those who gripe about the self brackets and thank you, for not using floating shelves. They're so cold and modern.
    If you ever want to beautify your brackets, you can change them out, with thick, gorgeous corbels .
    Much love,
    Tamara

      Thank you for sharing all this! My name is spelled Marloes. We go grocery shopping about 3 times a week but that’s mostly because we have things come up, guests who ask for dinner etc. During the lockdown we ate for up to three weeks with the four of us and we have a very fridge (like the one in the cottage). But as a vegetarian that’s easier as lentils and chickpeas etc all keep very long. And we used veggies from the freezer. It just takes a little more planning!

    You and Olaf did such a great job! It's a beautiful kitchen ❤️ The colour scheme is very calming and I think it's always a good idea to choose neutral colours for expensive items that will be there for years to come; that way if you feel like painting the walls or the cupboard a different colour, those items will still work in the space. I personally love the visible shelf brackets; they are charming alongside the rustic wooden shelf and the Digoin pieces. I loved hearing about your process, which is so different to mine. I always see what I want projected into the space as a whole. What's funny is, the more run down and neglected the space, the easier I manage to see ideas in my mind. Well done again Marloes! 👏

    • @FrenchCountryLife
      @FrenchCountryLife  Рік тому +1

      O wow I admire your ability to have a clear vision upfront! I absolutely love your style and how you’re renovating your house! I guess the more run down the less distractions? I feel it is easier for me to design a space when the space already exists… so I can stand in it, feel it and try to project ideas. I find it way harder to do this when there is nothing. When this space was a stable and there were only walls and no windows. Same with the cabin and our big kitchen. It isn’t always easy to stay patient… We’re not redecorating and renovating a house, we’re building a house. And that takes so long. On the other hand it gives me plenty of time to decide on things but sometimes I dream of having a house where spaces are defined and where there are more features already in place (such as built in cabinets, fireplaces, a nice floor) to work with or that can serve as a starting point or provide inspiration.
      But we’re getting there!

    • @athome_infrance
      @athome_infrance Рік тому

      @@FrenchCountryLife The wonderful thing about building your home from scratch is that you can tailor make every aspect of it! I feel your frustration for how long that takes but it will be so so worth the wait and I'm sure the sense of achievement will be HUGE.
      I guess I played house so much as a girl that I'm used to imagining in my mind what rooms look like 😊 I think it's also been invaluable to have only rented houses up to this point because it allowed me to know exactly what works for me and what doesn't now that we own our home. For example I used to love ceiling beams and exposed stone but now that I've lived with that in an old farmhouse here in France, I know it doesn't work for me. Too many places for dust and spider webs to collect! 😊 Time helps us to define and to design our dream home. I'm loving following your journey and every achievement and milestone you reach. 👏

    • @FrenchCountryLife
      @FrenchCountryLife  Рік тому +1

      @@athome_infrance Yes fully agree!! That is also what I appreciate… having lived in the house as it is for 3 years we know exactly what works and how we use the spaces. And I think a lot of features of an old farmhouse look amazing but aren’t necessarily comfortable. You need to have lived a winter in a “en pierre” house that’s not insulated to either know you’ll be chopping loads of wood or want to insulate 😂 which is what we did with the cottage. For our big kitchen however we will leave a wall en pierre. We burnt a lot of wood in our old uninsulated living room but we were never cold, and this wall in the kitchen will have a huge baie vitrée and I just think it is such a loss to cover it all up. Curious to see how we appreciate that choice afterwards 😉

    • @athome_infrance
      @athome_infrance Рік тому

      @@FrenchCountryLife You're so right about the insulation! It's like that in the rental we're living in at the moment while we renovate our place. A constant fire is needed in Winter, otherwise the temperature in the house plummets! Exposed stone looks beautiful though, I totally agree; and one stone wall is far easier to keep clean than a whole stone house! Your plan sounds absolutely stunning and, like you said, you've lived in the space long enough to understand perfectly how to use it. I can't wait to see it all materialise for you and your family.

    I LOVED this video. I approach a project like this the same way. But because I'm older than you, I've done it for years but cut pictures out of magazines instead. I collect pictures even when I'm not planning anything at the moment. I think you have terrific taste and have to say that neutrals colors are the most difficult I guess because there are so many colors that are similar. Choosing the colors is the most difficult part and usually takes longer than the project itself. When I was doing the kitchen in my small barn in France I did those varying colored tiles and loved the effect. I had a smaller backsplash, so I splurged on this. They were a soft grayish/blue. You have a lot of energy!

    • @FrenchCountryLife
      @FrenchCountryLife  Рік тому

      Oh I still cut out pictures from magazines as well! I love having both a Pinterest board and a scrap book. And like you, I am ALWAYS looking for nice interior ideas even when I don't have any projects! We have lived in our house in The Netherlands for 10 years and I hadn't touched anything since we did the big renovation when we moved in. It wasn't until we wanted to sell the house that I noticed how some things had actually gone outdated :) You wouldn't say so but I wasn't into decorating in The Netherlands at all! But a French farmhouse is just so inspiring!

    I’m just now seeing this and I’m in love with that kitchen the design the color scheme and the space😍you see how airy light and flowy the space is, it’s beautifully done and fits so well with the French country lifestyle! I love France so much the countryside is so serene and peaceful❤people could just live in that kitchen and not need anything else! But about Pinterest, I like the idea of organizing design details and picking and choosing what you like and don’t like however for me, I have a Pinterest but I’m so scattered I mean I like Mediterranean style yet I like English country, I like the colors and vibrancy of Mexican haciendas yet I do love everything vintage French so I’m just all over the place when it comes to what I like because I can’t narrow my focus down to just one style🤦🏻‍♀️I look around and even where I live there’s no cohesiveness in decor none whatsoever it’s so awful🤦🏻‍♀️🤣

    • @FrenchCountryLife
      @FrenchCountryLife  Рік тому

      Thank you! And frankly I have the same problem! I tell myself it’s best to choose the style that feels most authentic to the house which means that I have to abandon some more mediterranean or modern styles which I regret. So I know the feeling! Thanks for your comment 💜

    • @FrenchCountryLife
      @FrenchCountryLife  Рік тому

      I think they're more southern Europe style and very popular with those who love authentic, rustic and brocante style interiors. Traditionally farmhouses only had a simple limestone sink and later they would have a simple tap with cold water in the living space. The stone sink could sit on "jambages", made of stone as well, but definitely not cabinets like we know today.

      Thank you! Prices depend on where you are too (shipping). The smallest size (like mine) will indeed be around that price. Don’t hesitate to look online for a reseller near you and ask for details! You’re in France right? I have their french catalogue with all the models and prices. Just pick that up somewhere at a reseller if you’re interested and also it’s good to get their advice on how to define all your choices (nothing is standard on these and it is all customized so it’s good to know what you will be cooking and what you need and custom design yours to meet your needs). If you have questions, you can email me at bonjour@lasourcebourgogne.fr, happy to give more details from the catalogue if you feel more comfortable that way!

    What is the name of the cookbook with the fork on the spine!!

    • @FrenchCountryLife
      @FrenchCountryLife  Рік тому +1

      That is actually translated from English. It is a small book with "All your mother should have taught you about cooking". I always like the old ways of doing things, cleaning the house etc. In French it is called "Tout ce que votre mère aurait dû vous apprendre en cuisine". It has lots of basics cooking techniques but I bought it at a thrift store mostly because I like this kind of information. The other two books are very old "housekeeping" books that my friend and I found at one of those public "take them for free" libraries in a wine village. It is incredible to see what they taught us in the old days that we seem to have forgotten... which is why I think sometimes many people are lost in today's world...
