    My dad has this exact same saw in the same great condition. I grew up carrying this saw for him every time a hurricane came through and we had to cut up trees in the yard or in town, man that thing is heavy! The earth shaking sound this saw makes in indescribable. To this day he still won't let me use it. :)

    Nice saw! Friend of mine picked up a 038 mag that sat outside and had some water in it and missing a few things. I'm doing a little work on it and he's putting it together. Cylinder design looks great. Probably just clean it up a bit , gasket delete and dual port. Nothing to serious. Your saw runs great. I'm with ya . An oem saw that nice. What do ya do? What ever you want. Thank's for the video.

    It's nice when you get a clean one!
    Funny story, I've never had to dismantle an oil pump until after your recent video, now I've done two that weren't working properly. Today I was into a 3120 which is basically the same but twice as big, it's supposed to flow up to 51cc/min and the angle of the shaft end is so much more acute than any other saw, much more than the one you modified. Pump is still broken because somehow the drive wheel off the back of the clutch was totally stripped

    • @samishsawworks5870
      @samishsawworks5870  3 роки тому

      That's the way it goes usually, everything comes in spells. That's interesting about the 3120 oil pump, I'm going to have to look one up!

      @@samishsawworks5870 instead of the plastic worm drive gear it has a big chunky brass gear. There's supposed to be a washer behind it to (i surmise) both keep it in the correct place and protect the crank seal, somebody had taken it apart before and then didn't know where the washer was supposed to go. They put it inside the clutch drum between the clutch and drum, doh, not correct. I think this meant the brass gear could move around and it eventually stripped out and damaged the pump drive and the seal, now needs a new oil pump assembly, around $250, ouch

    Is that couple seconds of idling down/chain spin normal? Mine does this and I was thinking maybe I was running too lean? Seems to run fine and cut great, otherwise. Cheers. :)

    Nice! Early this year I picked up one of these used it was definitely no where as clean as this one and it is actually my first saw. Apparently it had been used to build a log cabin and then just some light duty fire wood after that. Took some work, and learning, but it seems to run great now. It came with a 28" bar and I am running full skip. I would love to see one ported as I have been thinking about having this one ported. This saw has got me hooked on power saws.

      Happy to hear it. That's a great "first saw." With a little love and care it'll last forever. They're very well built. It's about time I worked on a personal saw again, so I should be porting it soon ;)

    Nice saw!! I’m the same, I love OEM all the way, every nut, bolt, filter. I have dads ‘91, 038 super and it’s in immaculate condition as well. Why do you turn it on it’s sides and then vertical when idling? I assume that shows the carb is working properly?

    I have a 038 super converted to a mag top end, opened up the muffler, port matched the exhaust and opened it up a little bit, opened up the intake a bit, and cleaned up the transfers and she pulls hard with a 25 inch bar, 8 pin rim and rsf chain this winter going to play with some timing numbers

    • @samishsawworks5870
      @samishsawworks5870  3 роки тому +1

      She must be stout pulling hard with a 9 pin. Good work! No way in hell this one stock would pull a 9 pin driver or 8 for that matter. Now I definitely need to dig into building it ;)

      @@samishsawworks5870 whoops im running a 8 rather then 7, I want to try a 9 on a 18 inch bar and some .325 chain. Just a Frankenstein test when I can find a 9 pin 325 sprocket locally. But a 8 with rsf and 25 inch bar sunk it in 27 or 28 inch oak and don't force it keep revs up it just eats like a mofo. If your bored I suggest do some work in one if you want to pep it up a couple notches. I would like to try a 32 or 36 inch bar just sits and giggles but there are no trees I cut that need anything that size where I am lol 25 is already chewing through most of everything with a single cut

    That muffler is strange. I can see the port on the left side but not the right side. Is the other port in the front cover or the side of the main body? I’ve got triple port mufflers on both my 038 mags. They’re 72cc by the way.

    • @samishsawworks5870
      @samishsawworks5870  2 роки тому

      The triple port mufflers aren't that common. Well, here anyway. Yeah, there is one outlet on the recoil side and the other is like an 028. It's in the upper corner of the front cover on the pto side. I'm still on the hunt for one.

    • @eurokid83
      @eurokid83 2 роки тому

      Ben Hall yeah I got lucky and found both my triple port mufflers in a box at the shop I work at. One of my 038’s is set up nearly identical to yours. Full wrap, big bucking spikes, 28” lightweight bar, etc. One of the best upgrades I did was install a elastostart made a huge difference much nicer to start. The 038 is heavy compared to newer saws but it’s an absolute workhorse I love running mine. You’ll probably still be running that thing 20 years from now.
