It's a new violin. It will have to be played in before it starts to smooth out in tone. It will improve the more it's played.

The sound from such a cheap violin. I have to say. You are quite lucky. The worth and value of that violin is in the 500+ range.

I think you got a very fine violin. The one piece back is prbably worth at least a thousand dollars. There rare because the wood must be thoroughly dry to prvent cracking as it ages. Watch it very carefully and place a tangerine peel in the case. This will keep the case and violin hydrated. If you dont know the aging specifications of wood it is safe to assume the wood may.be green and it.may crack near the f holes. Thats why.I recomend placing a tangerine peel into the violin case. When the peel molds or becomes dry throw.it out and replace with new fresh tangerine peel. I would continue this practice the first ten years that you own the instrument . Afterward the wood should be fairly stabilized and the pitch and sap evaporated. You have a very nice violin for the.money. good job. It sounds decent. Play it often to season the wood and get a hygrometer to measure relative humidity. Ideally 45 to 60 percent relative humidity is just fine. If it gets wet a clean dry pillow case will absorb excess moisture. The big issue is keeping it in that range. I would play it every day and master the many different ways to tune it. Aubert bridges are usually good but you may find an even better bridge. The best wood is 300 years old from bosnia herzogovina. If your bridge saggs replace it with a better quality wood. Enjoy your new violin.😅

Chinese violin looks way nicer then the older violin. Sound wise, pretty similar, it's 99% skill of player and 1% the instrument and good player can make almost any instrument sound good.

the 1000$ violin is more full, more dynamic, and far more clean. the highs can be shrill on the chinese, harsher, and its very mid ranged.

Too bright(good for $150 though) The second violin had to me a better tone and clearer intonation.

Totally agree. I've been hunting for a violin and too scared to order from eBay without trying. I preferred the second one too, had a more mellow, deeper sound.

When I heard Fiddlerman's Chinese violins it blew me away that they was built in China and cheap price. But sounded double and triple the asking price. I think he jacked the prices up now because of how good they sounded but they were inexpensive.

the more expensive violin definitely has a lot more of a richer tone to it with greater depth. Although for the price the cheap violin does sound nice.

Yes, the more expensive one does aouns better. But it's too early for an accurate comparison, since the new one hasn't been tweaked and adjusted yet.

Violins at 10 thousands of dollar sound better than violins at few hundreds.
However, it is not true that a violin at 11 thousand dollars sound better than the violin of 10 thousand dollars.
In this case, you lost a thousand dollars - the money that can buy 2 good violins at 500 dollars each.

I bought a £150 violin in 2010 because I didn't want to travel and busk with my 200 year old antique violin (a gift valued at around £1000) - It looks a little cheap on close inspection but sounds very good for the price, specially now that it's been played in and settled a bit - I took a chance on a £60 chinese IPE bow recently on auction and that was well worth it too...

I actually played one when they first came out, about 1981or so,,I liked the sound and manageability,, also it's true strads are smaller it is also true yours sounds mellower, that is due to the fact that musical instruments especially Wood has to be played everything so often that includes the ones on display in museums, enjoy bro.

Can I ask you, What do you have to say about your "Antonio Stradivari copy" after two years? is it worth? I share the idea having a replica of an Antonio Stradivari is nice, but how good it is, and is it really a measurement replica? The price is very tempting and I believe you according your description the sound is stable. I would like to thank you in advance for the INFO.

Actually, I've kinda revised my opinion of this violin. After a few months playing and 'adjusting' the finish by thinning down the over-applied varnish with alcohol (meths), it sounds a whole lot better - a good second violin. Quite an acceptable sound for the money I'd say. 'E' string and 'A' string much nicer in tone.

That's good. Stradivarius designed his violins back when concert pitch was A=427 Hz or something like that, and today A=440 Hz. So if he came back to life today, he would need to make his violins a little smaller to sound right.

There's no "standard" violin measurements for any size stringed instrument, fractional or full size. Also, there's no standard pattern that covers every Stradivarius copy. Most of the old Italian instruments have been cut down or were built for specific patrons.
A guy who plays the violin as well as you do knows this.

The new fiddle sounds fine, but I must say the older fiddle sounds better - the sound of the older one has more body and texture. The lower notes of the new fiddle have a bit of a buzz to them - loose bass bar? - where the older fiddle sounds clean.
    Maybe that's all personal preference?
Anyway, glad you found a fiddle you like for a low price like that. ^_^

I bought 12 of the violins made in China,no label. Having seen thousands of violins(I am a Dealer) the wood alone would cost that much. As China's economy goes up so does the labor rate.German Violins with this high quality from 30-60 years ago would go for so much more. I think they are all under priced and they are selling in volume with reduced prices which will undoubtedly go up.

I like the sound of the Chinese strad copy in the video, I'm not crazy about the sound of the strings on it they almost sound like factory stainless steel strings. Unfortunately, these strings are mono-tone, hollow, colorless sounding. I actually love the sound of the string on the Romanian violin as well as the violin it's self much better color off the strings, better quality sound by far off the strings. A set of D'addario's or Dominant strings will improve the sound quality of the strings on the Chinese violin. I actually have a Cecilio CVN-200 series, love the sound, great look as nice as the Chinese strad copy in the video and these kits include: Two brazil wood, Mongolian horse hair bows, chromatic tuner and metronome, two bridges, Rosin cake, solid maple back, sides and spruce top with rosewood tail piece and tension pegs including fine tuners. Comes with two sets of Cecilio factory strings, solid foam cloth case with violin cover, all for ninety-nine dollars plus tax and shipping- both are a great buy.

It may seem sacrelegious, to say that it's the design, materials dedication and workmanship that are important.
I guess that the early Stradivarius violins also went through tweaks due to some material stability problems.

Thanks Taylor for a really helpful video. I, too, won one of these violin-shop violins a few days ago for about the same amount and am waiting anxiously to see if I've wasted my money! You have reassured me. I'm surprised it has an Aubert bridge - they're one of the best makes. I think your European violin has a very slightly warmer tone but the Chinese Strad copy will be good enough for me. Once again, many thanks for your generous sharing of your thoughts. Doubt it's rosewood. But there are a lot of topical woods that are almost as nice. Granadillo for example. I used it for replacement handles on my antique planes.
Consider there may be so much variation among units from this manufacturer that this may not be a representative sample. Another one off the line may not be nearly as nice. Or it might. He's happy so call it a win.

The problem with chinese violin (or vast majority of them) is the quality of the wood and quality of the deep tones and especialy the whole G string.
Chinese wood resonates different from European one. Chinese wood produces narrow, high pitch, shiny and "brass" sound. European wood produces wide, warm and "human voice like" sound.
It doesn't mean that Chinese wood is inferior. But violin was designed for european wood and Chinese copied it for Chinese wood without changes - and it doesn't work the best way.
You have to compensate it by setup and by the string selection. Try to avoid shiny and bright strings and choose warm and low tension strings instead - but this is the second problem.
Vast majority of Chinese violin come with cheap metal core strings, which are very bright, so the probem is doubled. I don't know any chinese violin coming with high end synthetic core strings, because they tends to be as expensive as the whole Chinese violin :D :D :D

    • @langhamp8912

There's very high quality Chinese violins that have won international luthier competitions. Fiddlershop sells them, I think they're in the $2000 to $15,000 range.
As for the wood, I have several violins of Chinese, US, and Rumanian pedigree, and by moving around the bridge and soundpost, you can make the violin as bright or as dark, as loud or as soft as you want. Even people hearing my carbon fiber Glasser violin think its a dark wood sound just by moving the bridge forward.
Personally, I do find differences between violins when playing them, but their sound is all the place. I think just having a bridge with good feet goes a long way to making that "booming" sound that you need.
AV Daniel has excellent tutorials on how to change your violin's sound.

Besides, only around 500 violins manufactured by the Stradivari family actually exist. The chances of even coming across one of the originals on eBay are slim to none, and you'd then be looking at blowing at least a good 2-3 million USD to purchase it at auction. Probably the reason why nobody was bidding against you.

sound nice! звук понравился, сочный и звонкий, а если струны поменять - вообще будет оркестровой!

Is there chance that they are using veneers to replicate flamed wood? Not uncommon on cheaper electric guitars.

It looks like it has real flame on the video, look carefully from 00:29 to 00:31. When he moves the violin, I can see the little shinning effects and the 3d effects.

More on the story. So...I hear from the guys in China. They have received the violin back from France and did I want it to be sent back to me? If I did then would I pay the re-delivery charges? What!!! It's your fault not mine. I said I wouldn't pay and they said OK they would pay so I assume it is now on its way to me the second time. Apologies to all for this rant - it's turning into a blog! I'll let you know when (if) it arrives. Watch this space......

Well, yeah. Finally arrived. The finish is not so good as in the photos but I don't care so much about that - poor varnish application. The sound post was loose but I fixed it in properly. The factory strings aren't much good so I put some Thomastik Dominant (standard) strings on plus I fitted on fine tuners as the pegs were slipping a bit. Sounds OK, a bit tinny on the A and the E is not as mellow as I'd like for old timey playing. However, it's not too bad, still not as good as some of my old German violins. I'd get an older fiddle from ebay or somewhere if I were you and get a luthier to fix it up for you, you'll get a better sound in the end I'm sure. Bon courage!

Kit Wells late to the party but. How is it holding up? Did you try it with any decent bows? Did you experiment with rosin? With some more tailored strings? Did you get the sound post in a good position so it sounds stronger?

thanks for posting this video. I have been thinking about purchasing a violin from this site for a while. The violin I'm looking at from violin shops is in the 1000 dollar range. Considering yours sounds good at $152.50 I imaging the 1000 dollar violin must be quite nice. A few questions. Is it smaller in length or is the neck just thinner? I have a old German fiddle that has a similar looking neck. Also how is the wood? and is the finger board made of ebony or is it just painted black?

I personally wouldn't pay $1000 for a Chinese violin I have been trail and error with violin since I started playing 19 months ago I have several family members that play violin but I had to learn on my own my likes and dislikes. I purchased a Chinese violin that cost me $1600 first one I bought didn't know much and I basically got dooped into buying it. This $152 dollar violin is way better than the one that cost me $1600 it's better quality one piece back which in itself is Awsome. The pegs chin rest and tailpiece are boxwood beautiful looking. The fingerboard is ebony like I said in the video black was rubbing off on my fingers from the fingerboard but I cleaned it and hasn't had any issues the seller really nice guy assured me that it was ebony and said he had no problem giving my money back if I wasn't satisfied I will defiantly buy another one again from him. The violin is a couple centimeters smaller than my other width wise and the neck is thinner width wise and I actually like it. I'm 6'1 and have good size hands and it feels great. Hope it helps you out thanks for watching.

If you want to spend that much money spend a little more and get a nice European instrument if not I would recommend this price range. Because violin usually with age become more valuable or at least hold their value.

Taylor Fuentes I already have a German violin and am looking for a secondary fiddle. Wouldn't you recommend buying from this seller?

I would but I'm saying I wouldn't spend $1000 dollars on a Chinese violin when I only paid $150 and I'm completely satisfied. There's no need to spend that much I think but than again it's not my money. But you never know it could turn out to be an Awsome instrument but I personally feel that if your gunna spend a lot of money on any acoustic instrument it's better to play on the instrument in person so you can see if you like it or not because it's an investment.
