You mentioned you don’t like how the grill doesn’t show the temp from the probe while the food is resting. Just an FYI in case you didn’t know, if you hold “manual” down for 2 seconds while the food is resting, it will display the temp!
Just got one. The dawn power scrub has really been a game changer in clean-up! Another thing I do for the "bottom pan" ( like when I'm doing wings) is cut a piece of parchment to put under the fry basket or grill grate. Helps with clean-up.
Perhaps you're not aware that Phillips the inventor of the air fryer developed the "Starfish" design to create greater velocity of air moving across the food without losing temperature. Ninja designed the Starfish technology (patterns and depth of grid valleys) into their grill grates for optimum velocity and heat. The Foodi Grill grate is ceramic coated for higher heat retention and ease of clean up. The sizzle grill defeats the starfish technology and grid depth which is why you didn't get the same cook on the second breast. Sorry you don't like the appearance of grill mark design in the starfish technology but the aluminum sizzle grill eliminates what makes the Foodi Grill great. Not sure why you're placing food on the center mark of the Foodi Grill grate. Keep it centered over the starfish pattern. You'll get greater Maillard carmelization and improved taste. Also the constant banging of the sizzle grill will chip the cook pot, grate or base liner every time you take it in and out. NOT A GOOD IDEA - Keep the sizzle grill on your outdoor grill and out of your indoor appliances.
I actually have 2 of the Phillips air fryers and they are awesome and they actually have a patent on their starfish design. I also have the Ninja XL grill and love them all.
This is the most correct comment. Never put your meat in the center to block the center hole of your foodi grill. Also, skipping preheat will make the food worsely cooked by the original grill, because that grill is coated with ceramic but made of cast iron inside, it needs time to heat to proper temprature, it also needs time to cool down.
I have the ninja pressure cooker/air fryer. That's a really good idea to line the bottom pan. I've been using aluminum foil on the basket, which is great (no clean up at all), not maybe lining the pot would help with air circulation... although even with just the foil, it still crisps pretty well.
I’m here because I just got a Ninja grill for Christmas and attempted to cook chicken twice but both times were a total fail. Dry chicken. Now I have to send my grill back for a replacement because it does not allow me to change the temperature and the probe wasn’t working properly. So I’m watching your videos so that I’ll be ready when I get my replacement grill.
So, I'm way late to this game. Now I'm thinking accessories before the XL has even arrived! Love your videos, QVC or HSN called yet? You are a natural! 👏😉

I used my Grill Grate yesterday for the first time. It was perfect for grilled pork tenderloins. When it cooled off, I put it in hot soapy water in the sink and let it soak for a bit. It cleaned like brand new perfectly.
I have grill grates for my Weber kettle and big green egg. They’re fantastic. Moving to an apartment in a few weeks and ordered a XL. I’ll be buying these!
Nice comparisons Louise. I was dying laughing when you done the taste test on the 2nd chicken breast. It was if you could not chew fast enough. LOL. You didn't need to rush because your hands were speaking for you. Too funny. You are the BEST of the BEST. I just love you.
Glad you did this. I have the original grill. I made a post on a FB group about how I hated cleaning the swirly grate and got slammed. Even called lazy. Was so happy to hear you say the same thing. Again thanks!
I spray stuck on food with Dawn Platinum Powerwash. It has cleaned some really hard to remove food. I still use my 20+ year old Foreman grill. I really dislike cleaning the grate on it. For one thing the grate doesn’t come off so, I set it next to the sink, spray and let sit until ready to cleanup. I think your grate would clean up beautifully with the Dawn. I do enjoy your UA-cam’s.
I’m confused, so when it says to “FLIP”, you’re not actually flipping the chicken, why? You’re just keeping it on the same side, and moving it to a different position on the grill. 🤷🏼♀️
Hi Louise : ) Great video! Thanks for sharing! Just a little tip with the probe. How you mentioned that during the rest period it won't show the current temp during the rest. If you press and hold on the manual button for a few seconds it will show the current reading from the probe : ) however I don't know of any way to increase the resting timer. Haven't figured out if that is possible yet or not hmmm
Thank you so much! I had no idea that was possible! Please don't tell me it is in the manual because that would simply be embarrassing! LOL LOL If you figure out how to increase the resting timer please let me know!
I use Dawn power wash soap to clean my ninja foodie. This is the best soap to clean it. I use it on my grill grate and everything else. This makes everything so easy to use. Spray and walk away for a few minutes and then clean up and your not spending allot of time wasting it because it easy just wipe it off and rinse it. I spray it on when it cools down and then spray it and then relax
And, I found that the Power Dawn has a terrible smell…so strong. I use the regular Dawn and soak in a sheet pan or the pan of the Ninja which I have out of the Ninja while soaking.
I responded to your last comment with a link to the recipes I have for the grill. Keep in mind that when using air fry, you can use any of my Ninja Foodi air fryer recipes and they work just the same in the grill. Here is a link for them: thesaltedpepper.com/category/air-fryer-recipes/
i wonder if the color change from the original was caused by the center of the original grate for the grill has holes getting more air circulation than the Sear 'N Sizzle that is solid. which would also make it the texture different and "leathery like".Makes me want to buy the grill now. Great comparison video!! I have the smaller foodi grill and the smaller grill grate and enjoy using both of them for different things. What are your thoughts on turning the temp down to 150° while using the original Ninja grill plate with the chicken coming out with the same tenderness and moisture retention as the sear and sizzle grate used at 155°?

Hi. I have learned so much from you. You are an EXCELLENT cook. It's always obvious whether a person knows how to cook or not. Thanks so much and Happy Holidays to you. and your family! ❤️
We love the sear n sizzle. My husband likes the taste better than with gas grill or the Traeger. It is so nice in the winter months to be able to grill steaks, pork chops or any meat that tastes so good. Clean up is a breeze. Thank you for recommending this!!!
I used flat iron steaks to test out my new grill grate. In my case, the results were actually reversed. The steak that came off the grill grate vs the one that I cooked using the original starfish was tougher and had a less than desirable crust. This video was awesome though and I'll try it again with something else.
The plate is not available in UK. I got one for my XL from GRILLGATE in the USA. expensive with postage and duty (over 70 dollars). I haven’t got it yet, but it looks good.
Who's the crazy person who gave the thumb's down?... This was another perfect video that explains everything so I can easily understand it! The Salted Pepper, you did another great job! 😘
Thank you so much! There are 1-2 thumbs downers every video. Sometimes they strike before the video even goes live. It's hysterical. I don't sweat it at all, UA-cam sees it as engagement and it helps me! So, I guess the joke is on them! LOL
My hunch on the difference in the two is simply airflow. If you look at the design of the original grate, it promotes a swirling airflow effect that draws from below and spins outwardly. Think of this grate as the "convection" setting in a traditional oven. That's probably why your first one temp'd a little higher with a tougher exterior. The second grate doesn't promote the same kind of airflow and acts more like the 'bake' setting on a traditional oven. Hence the slightly lower resulting temp and softer exterior. My $0.02 at least... If the above is true, I'd be curious about consistency across multiple pieces - especially as you get closer to the edge of the pan - given most people won't be cooking just one at a time.
It's more about heat transfer and even cooking, but I'm sure air flow also comes into play. When the juices release from the meat during cooking, they hit the grill grate and steam which keeps the chicken from getting that tough exterior. The grill grate gets hotter than the other grate because of the material it's made of. It's pretty impressive.
I saw you said you cooked the rest on the grill grate of your choice... Did you cook one at a time or multiples... Which ones tastes better the first ones or so on because one thing I do know is that with this test one had more time at room temperature than the other which makes a huge difference in cooking. I'm just curious.
I let the chicken sit out for about 30 minutes or so before the video so they were close in temp. I cooked 1 at a time in this video, but that was just time to compare. I would cook them both at the same normally.
Yes, the grill plate fits, but I don't know how well it would work because I haven't grilled anything on it, but I do make cookies on it! It's hard to recommend one over the other because it really depends on your cooking style. I do recommend the Ninja Foodi Pressure Cooker & Air Crisper over any of the other appliances because it does so much.
The original grill grate may have been designed for airflow but it sure wasn't designed for cleaning. I have tried so many different suggestions on the web and nothing helps when things get stuck in there. I finally stopped the wife from using spray on can grease but sticking is still an issue and cleaning up still is a pain even when using the provided brush. I will have to look into this.
I had the same problem with the original grill grate. I took special care of it, but it gets these black grease dots that make food stick. Could never get everything off. The sear n sizzle is way better
Hi, will the Sear and Sizzle work with the latest Ninja Foodi XL Pro 9-in-1 Smart Grill w/ Griddle? It is not listed on the Sear and Sizzle website, I just wanted to see if anyone has had success using that accessory on the latest model. Thank you!
Thanks for the demo. I would love to have the grate. But I must say I'm more than a little irritated that after buying a $300 appliance, something that should have been part of the package costs $50!!
Don't waste your money on that grate. Looks horrible and pay attention on how it permanently stains over time, aside from the fact that eventually it will chip the nonstick surface of the cooking pot.
@@Albertojedi Thx for your perspective. Actually I wish I hadn't bought that Foodie Grill. I love my original air fryer and use it every day. It's fast and an easy cleanup. The Grill - just a pain to clean. Now it's just sitting unused and taking up space.
Here is the link for the grill grate: www.grillgrate.com/searnsizzle-grillgrate-for-the-foodi-smart-grill-xl-1/?aff=33 Here is my affiliate link for the acutal grill: amzn.to/3eZI3zv
I think the reason the Ninja grill grate is spiraled is because the spinning fan is pushing the air down in a circular manner as it’s running. Whether this is to give the user a visual impression of this being an air fryer grill compared to a more traditional panini grill or if there is an actual result from this, I don’t know. But the trivet on the Foodi fryer basket has a similar design. I’m surprised the result came out so strongly to one over the other. I’ve heard at least one recommendation to order the grate from Ninja as an accessory to the Air Fryer oven instead of having both appliances. But knowing the Sear And Sizzle is available isn’t something you want to forget. I believe my Foodi does excellent burgers even without a grill.
Thanks so much for taking the time to post this. I can’t tell you how much googling I’ve done trying to work out why my grilled chicken breasts taste like shoe leather, while everyone else seemed to love theirs! I had tried cooking on medium and taking out at 70 c (about 158 F I think), but still it ended up being fed to the dogs (who frankly weren’t all that interested either)!! I’m in the UK so will have to ask Father Christmas nicely for this, as, with delivery, it is quite an investment. Your videos and recipes are always very helpful and much appreciated. Thank you Louise.
I still have the original foodi grill. I use the foodi crisper basket, or the foodi griddle, that has handles and is non stick. I have the grill grate, but no longer use it. Foodi products are easier to clean and do not need seasoning.
Yes, there is a square on that fits the original grill. I don't have that one, but I do have the round one for the NF Pressure Cooker and it works great. Here is the link for the square one: www.grillgrate.com/searnsizzle-grillgrate-for-the-foodi-grill/?aff=33
The round sear 'n sizzle fits any of the oven models, but the clearance is low on the flip styles. I use the XL countertop oven with both the round sear 'n sizzle and the one in this video.
Links are in the video description, but here is the link for the sear 'n sizzle for the xl grill: www.grillgrate.com/searnsizzle-grillgrate-for-the-foodi-smart-grill-xl-1/?aff=33
Oh no another accessory I have to have :)). You did a very nice video of how it works. I want it for my homemade pre-made hash browns and all kinds of other stuff :)) fajitas and things that fall into the cracks of the N grill grate. I really never liked the one with my foodi and was sorry I purchased it. Larger is better. I think I will really like it. I have the same feelings as you about the things you don't care about the Grill grate that came with NFXLG.
I forgot PIZZA :0. Flat grill super hot is what I need...Im searching for the best pizza I can make indoors in one of my Ninja oven, grill or foodi.. that can come close to my wall oven or wood fired oven.
Yes, I know! There is always one more must have accessory! LOL I'm sorry you don't like the round one for the Foodi, I love mine. I hope you like this one!
I have a question...in the video you put the grill grate in the inner pot on the XL grill. I have the 5 in 1 grill and in the picture for the square grill grate it shows it on top of the grate that comes with it. Would you do that or put in right in the inner pot?
Thanks! I looked at the picture and you are right, it looks like they are sitting it on top. I'm guessing that is because the original grill is deeper and the elevation helps not only with circulation, but also with being closer to the element. I don't have that one, so I haven't used it.
Not sure how you can compare when you do not use the temperature prope the correct way how they explain on the manual. You changed the temperature manually instead of letting the computer control the temp. Worked great for me and the chicken breast was moist. Manual also explained on tough residue just let soak in warm soapy water and does come off a lot easier.
If they didn't want you to change the temperature manually, there wouldn't be a manual option. I'm sorry, but I'm not cooking my chicken to 165℉, knowing that the temp will go up 5-10 degrees during the rest time and then my chicken is overcooked and dry. As far as the temperature probe goes, that is the correct way to do it, you can also go in from the end, either way is fine. I have soaked the grate that comes with the grill in hot soapy water and it's still hard to clean in the grooves because of the way the curves are. Maybe I cook different things or cook more or have a bum grate, but it's always been hard for me to clean it. The sear 'n sizzle grill grate is very easy to clean for me and I love the way it cooks, so I thought I'd do a video on it.I'm glad you are enjoying your grill and don't find the grate hard to clean!
You mentioned you don’t like how the grill doesn’t show the temp from the probe while the food is resting. Just an FYI in case you didn’t know, if you hold “manual” down for 2 seconds while the food is resting, it will display the temp!

Where do I get the sear and sizzle grill/grate from?
The plate is not available in UK. I got one for my XL from GRILLGATE in the USA. expensive with postage and duty (over 70 dollars). I haven’t got it yet, but it looks good.
That is expensive! I hope you love it! Make sure to preheat on the hottest setting for a full 10 minutes for the best results.
omg this randomly showed up in my stream during searches and I just bought one based on this review.
I hope you love it!
Looks yummy Great tips and info Didn't know about the square grill until now Thanks for sharing
👩🍳
You are so welcome!
Louise, if I can only get the xl grill OR the ninja oven, which do you recommend? I like to air fry, grill, and do spatchcock chickens
The Ninja XL oven (not the flip) and this size sear 'n sizzle and you have it all covered!
@@TheSaltedPepper that’s what I was leaning towards, thanks!
Who's the crazy person who gave the thumb's down?...
This was another perfect video that explains everything so I can easily understand it!
The Salted Pepper, you did another great job! 😘
I totally AGREE
Salted Peppers videos are THE BEST
Thank you so much! There are 1-2 thumbs downers every video. Sometimes they strike before the video even goes live. It's hysterical. I don't sweat it at all, UA-cam sees it as engagement and it helps me! So, I guess the joke is on them! LOL
Thanks so much!
There is no vaccine for stupidity...yet
A ninja employee, gave the thumbs down.
Prob different because you lowered the temperature on the second piece ?
I didn't. The temp lowered, but I corrected it immediately. Unfortunately, I think that was edited out during post production.
How do you prevent your xl grill from smoking
hide the cigarettes and weed in a safe place
Where can you purchase the Million Dollar Rub? You make it sound so good!
Can you use that grill plate in the XL oven. I am vacillating between purchasing the XL oven and the Grill? Which would you recommend?
Yes, the grill plate fits, but I don't know how well it would work because I haven't grilled anything on it, but I do make cookies on it! It's hard to recommend one over the other because it really depends on your cooking style. I do recommend the Ninja Foodi Pressure Cooker & Air Crisper over any of the other appliances because it does so much.
Great video, I know I’m a year late but just to let you know when resting, if you hold the manual button you will get the temperature shown ☺️
Thanks!
Lol sorry I saw other comments mentioning this. Definitely a year too late 🤪
I am thinking about purchasing an xl smart grill, but i was wondering what is the inside made of, is it stainless steel or is it ceramic
It's not ceramic, but I can't say for sure it is stainless steel. I would call Ninja and ask them what the material is.
Great vid. Looking for one for my Ninja Wood Fire.
I agree!
Thank you!
No, unfortunately it doesn't.
@@TheSaltedPepper thank you! I posted on the Facebook group and found out some interesting information. Thanks again for the community! 🙌
Hello. I'm looking for your review of the Ninja IG651 pro XL. Did you do one? Thanks!
can you get the flat grill in stores, I'm in Canada
I don't think it's sold in stores.
Where can I get different items to use in my xlninja foodi
Thanks for the demo. I would love to have the grate. But I must say I'm more than a little irritated that after buying a $300 appliance, something that should have been part of the package costs $50!!
It's not sold by Ninja, it's a product of Grill Grate. The grill that comes with the Foodi works fine, but I do love the Grill Grate!
@@TheSaltedPepper I would be a prospect for it but not at the $50 cost
Don't waste your money on that grate. Looks horrible and pay attention on how it permanently stains over time, aside from the fact that eventually it will chip the nonstick surface of the cooking pot.
@@Albertojedi Thx for your perspective. Actually I wish I hadn't bought that Foodie Grill. I love my original air fryer and use it every day. It's fast and an easy cleanup. The Grill - just a pain to clean. Now it's just sitting unused and taking up space.
Does the probe and controls work with this grill grate or do i need to use thermometer?

I cannot find a Sear N Sizzle grate for my Ninja. Where did you get yours?
Here you go: www.grillgrate.com/searnsizzle-grillgrate-for-the-foodi-smart-grill-xl-1/?aff=33
Do I need to ‘prepare’ the plate before first use?
Some people rub it with an onion and other people use a little oil. I don't think I did anything and it worked just fine.
I think that was the design thinking as well. Or they just wanted to be fancy. Who knows, but it's a pain to clean those curved things! LOL
I wonder if you took the finished temp to 150F and cooked on low? I know they are super expensive to ship to the UK.
Marinate your chicken and then you can cook on high. You get a delicious char like you used an outdoor grill and no shoe leather effect.
Where do I get the grid from for both the xl grill and ninja foodie plz
Why do you us duck fat versus maybe chicken or beef fat? I am wondering if it works better or lees flavor left.
What is your source for brushable duck fat?
It's not brushable, it's in a spray can and I got it from the Grill Grate people, but it's available many places I think.
I find the grill super easy to clean...just put it in the dishwasher...comes out perfectly clean every time!
Mine doesn't for some reason, maybe it's the type of food I'm cooking or I have heard that there are two different styles of grill grates.
I still have the original foodi grill. I use the foodi crisper basket, or the foodi griddle, that has handles and is non stick. I have the grill grate, but no longer use it. Foodi products are easier to clean and do not need seasoning.
I have the hardest time getting the grill plate clean that comes with the grill, so I love the Sear 'N Sizzle.
@@TheSaltedPepper I do not use the foodi grill grate or the grill grate. I only use the foodi grill crisper basket, or the foodi grill griddle.
Try Dawn Platinum Powerwash dish spray to clean grill grate. It works fantastic on hard to clean dishes, pans, etc.
Great information, I learned a lot from you
Easy to clean, dishwasher. Works for me
I have a hard time cleaning the one that came with the grill. Even in the dishwasher. Food gets stuck on the rounded areas for me.
You’re the best !!! Thanks
AGREED
Thank you so much!
Thanks!
I wish u didn’t change the temperature on the second round. That 5 degrees really makes a difference
The temperatures were the same.
Thank you. You just answered my question.
did the ninja gril have one like this not the xl one?
Yes, there is a square on that fits the original grill. I don't have that one, but I do have the round one for the NF Pressure Cooker and it works great. Here is the link for the square one: www.grillgrate.com/searnsizzle-grillgrate-for-the-foodi-grill/?aff=33
Where do we get the grate
What is the model number for your Ninja XL countertop oven that u can use the grill grate interchangeably with the countertop pressure cooker?
The round sear 'n sizzle fits any of the oven models, but the clearance is low on the flip styles. I use the XL countertop oven with both the round sear 'n sizzle and the one in this video.
Were do you get plate from for grill
where can I get that grill grate love the Ninja Foodi XL but would love to try that other grill grate

Oh yeah I also forgot you said it works in the oven too...pizza another plus!
This should work close to using a pizza stone.
Yes, I know! There is always one more must have accessory! LOL I'm sorry you don't like the round one for the Foodi, I love mine. I hope you like this one!
I'm working on a thin crust pizza in the Ninja XL oven.
I have a question...in the video you put the grill grate in the inner pot on the XL grill. I have the 5 in 1 grill and in the picture for the square grill grate it shows it on top of the grate that comes with it. Would you do that or put in right in the inner pot?
I don't have that one, but I would think it would sit in the inner pot. I'm not sure though. Where did you see the picture?
@@TheSaltedPepper I saw it on the website from the above link. www.grillgrate.com/searnsizzle-grillgrate-for-the-foodi-grill/?aff=33
@@TheSaltedPepper I saw it on the website from the above link. www.grillgrate.com/searnsizzle-grillgrate-for-the-foodi-grill/?aff=33
I have this grill without the temp probe and wondering if ur model is the same size as mine and if that grill grate will fit it too?
I think that would be the smaller grill and they do have a grate for that one as well. The link is in the video description.
I don’t like anodized aluminum for any food. If they made a cast iron or stainless steel one I’d be in 100%
gotta put it on the highest setting to sear then turn it down
