This song doesn't make me feel sad, just, like, heavy. Like I'm really here and not just an abstract thought. It's grounding, but also ethereal and it really helps me.
Yes. I understand. The first few notes stir a deeeeep pain inside of my, but by the time the chorus comes in so powerfully, like a wave of water on the ocean it just smoooooths the sand it mixes with. I remember listening to this when it came out, and I had just decided I wanted a divorce from my husband. Life should have been chaotic, but certain tracks like this one just crammed their way into my skull, reverberating, forevermore, moving me along like water and sand. Grounding and ephemeral all at once.
Man, Hozier really milked that drunken conversation with Crowley! All jokes aside, I think this song is absolutely marvelous. The lyrics, the melody, the vibe... it has such a sadness to it, and yet it also has a certain lightness - like when you find solace in giving up hope... I don’t know if you know what I mean... anyways, this song will always occupy a special place in my heart, it’ll never not be gold
My favorite thing about Hozier's music is how interpretative it is. So many say this song is sad, and I can see that, but when I first and continue to hear it, to me its about someone who falls in love with someone unconventional tbat is going through a rough time, likely something the singer has experienced in the past. Yet, the singer loves the person so much that they are willing to leave the easygoing-ness of their current life to be there for this person and be with them.
You hit the nail on the head when you said "interpretative" - I was surprised to see people think this song is sad and your interpretation hadn't occurred to me, either. To me it sounds like the singer escaped from a toxic situation (the lowest-hanging fruit being some sort of repressive religious community, which is rather a theme for Hozier), and has since found freedom and validation in being and doing the things that community looked down on regardless of imposed morality. He's acting as the tempter waiting for the listener to realize they're trapped in the same or similar situation and to help them be a happier, less inhibited version of themself. ...Not to say that the singer's way is inherently better. He's jealous and possessive ("a rope in hand / for your other man / to hang from a tree") and at least metaphorically violent ("innocence died screaming / honey, ask me, I should know"). But he certainly doesn't feel guilty about it.
I couldn't agree more. I see this song as a sweet song as he said I slithered from Eden just to sit outside of your door. There's really something about the girl that he couldn't think of the good things and doesn't care abt it just to be with his love.
I thought it was the desperate-longing-happy feeling of being in love. Wanting and doing so much just to be around the person and yet in the end doing only just that. Probably because that's how I love. Dedicating everything to that one person but never really telling them it was all for them. Just hoping I've put enough love in whatever it was that they'll be able to recognize.
Same with me, i started listen Hozier when i got depression, but, when i become to listen more and more musics from him, i became to see that his musics are about love
I love reading all of these comments of people that I can empathize so well with. There are so many strangers out there that we can connect with through music and that is a damn good feeling that you are NEVER alone.
Not only are his lyrics great, but his guitar work is almost always intoxicating. I could listen to the music alone and be perfectly happy. Great artist.

If you watch the video, it's a little more clear. He loves her innocence; she has another man but he intends to steal her from him. He's bad (the only thing that 'slithered' in Eden was the devil), and is saying that there are no good people left anymore anyway. This song really hits home for me.
Yes! I know Hozier and I have different religious beliefs but I love how biblical this song. For me it exposes how Satan is behind so much of what is the world embraces. Our temptations.... etc.
The musicianship is incredible. A beautifully written piece. He deserves all of the fame and recognition he is receiving and more. So nice to have a popular artist actually be talented and musically brilliant.

No other artist has been so expressive in the past decade. His Meaningful lyrics, overwhelming music and above all, soul touching voice are really artistic and exceptional. Matthew John Pace Take Me to Church is a horrible song. It's hard to understand why anyone likes it. No lead guitar. No bass. No drums. Vocals are droning. Lyrics aren't that clever. It's just a dumb, poorly written song. I was pleasantly surprised to hear From Eden because I thought every song Hozier plays sucks based on the one song the radio plays.
Matthew John Pace I've played guitar for 20 years and I can play more than a dozen instruments. I taught music lessons for a decade. The only things I find redeeming in this song are Hozier's disenchantment with church and infatuation with a woman. I am also part Irish, fwiw. Part of the reason why I'm sick of it is because Alt 98.7 FM and KROQ 106.7 FM have overplayed it. They haven't played even one of his other songs, even though songs like From Eden are newer. It takes a lot to impress me musically. In other words, if there are only vocals at the expense of the other instruments (that I now know they have), they better be off the chart and still I like a full band of instruments to keep me interested.
When I first listened to this song it filled me with such an immense sadness, and I don't know why. I kept playing it and now it's the opposite. I love this song.
I will be forever grateful to the person who made me listen to this song. We might stop talking and I might forget you but I will remember this song. Forever.
He is about to blow up. Did Letterman last week, will be on Ellen this week and most importantly (to me) I get to see him tomorrow night in concert. Cannot wait!
I have his whole album on CD, so everytime I'm in my car late I like to listen to his songs, it's so amazing to just drive ant night and listen this, really, that gives me such a good vibes, like summertime, and a little bit of sadness, but also happiness at the same time. Like, melancholy, that I love. Amazing songs. He's just so talented!
So many of these comments are from before he got as big as he is now.. i wish i could say i was hee, but i wasn't. But I'm here now. We all are. At the very least, we were HERE.
who is this Spotify character - was this a man made character or being, or was this brought from another parallel universe, I wonder, truly I do wonder.
I discovered this song on a random winter afternoon...the melancholy of lyrics the music that balances them just perfect leaving you with a smile everytime you hear it.
It's been some years now since the divorce. I still bear an incredible sense of pain and this song conjures that in such a profound way. I had this album playing continuous on my drives to and from work, Hozier my bard before and during the most troubling, disruptive parts of my life--my love leaving me, forcing me to leave, the love I had for her usurped by woe and misery. Now when I hear this sweet song it fills me with that nostalgic feeling, a sort of sweet pain for something that was before, that thing that is lost and will never be again. I listen to this song and wonder if there will ever be another that is fair, another darling of my affections. A part of me supposes it will simply never be so.
This song is grim as fuck. A lot of Hozier's songs are. It's cool it makes those people happy but it's kinda like the people that jammed out to Pump up kicks by Foster The People. You wonder if they hear the lyrics.
Very few songs on the radio nowadays have the ability to inspire me and make me FEEL something. This song is one of those rare gems. Loved it instantly.

I'm here because I've just read a fanfiction on good omens and in the final notes it said that the title was from this song, with a link to it, and I'M HAPPY.
It took me two months to locate this song after I heard it on BBC one. -Very good, I'll check back later to listen to the rest of the album, hopefully the music is just as good as this song.
If you use Spotify, go and use Mineric's Radio 1 playlist, constantly updated (weekly i believe) =) I found this song on Radio 1 and also on the playlist.
I guess I should feel lucky! I heard this song for the first time today, and my radio told me who it was... I thought I'd have no luck cause the info was coming out a bit crazy. Good thing I up-graded the stereo! haha... So happy I bumped into the wrong radio station this morning. This was the second song they played...
SandyTheMaster yeah pretty much. It's about a man that has done bad things in his life and meets a girl who is innocent and pure "like his mirror years ago" and he wishes to be with her but she is in a relationship with another man. Though you can percieve the song however you wish, that's the beauty of music.
I didn't like that church song on the radio. But this album is getting some serious underground hype, so I had to check it out. This guy is amazing. Now all his songs are growing on me. Just ordered this album on vinyl. Cant wait to hear it on my new U-Turn turntable. I bet it is going to sound so much better than it already does.
I'm not a fan of take me to church either. My mom likes him and she really wanted to go to his concert so I went with her. I had never heard anything besides take me to church. His concert made me fall in love with his music and him. I can't get enough now.
this song makes me feel special because im weird asf so when he says “thats something tragic about you something so magic about you” I feel sooo special and unique ❤️
Im so obsessed with this song. Its just so attractive in some way. The lyrics, melody and everything are all amazing plus i loved the video but theres just something about this song that is so...? I dont know. Perfect?
Hozier is just so talented in his lyrics and music as well. He's not even appreciated enough. This makes me mad but I feel somehow honoured to be one of the few that listen to his songs. I love him so much.
The fact that this song means so much to me alot of his songs do his songs have helped me through alot and I rlly appreciate it .Hearing his angelic voice after a hard day hits different ❤
Hozier's From Eden is a poetic love song that uses diction, juxtaposition, and figurative language like allusions and metaphors to show that it is written from the perspective of the Devil and delve into what the Devil feels for the subject of his desire. The biggest hint towards the narrator's identity is the title and the last line of the chorus, "I slithered here from Eden just to sit outside your door". "From Eden" is a clear allusion to the Biblical Garden of Eden, where the Devil took the form of a snake and tempted Eve, the first woman, into eating forbidden fruit. The narrator says "I slithered", implying that they are the snake from the Garden - the Devil. The fact that he would leave the Garden of Eden, the most beautiful and perfect place on Earth, to sit outside the subject's door implies that the Devil thinks of the subject incredibly highly. He would rather be on their porch than in heaven on Earth. The diction in the song implies a conflict around the Devil's feelings for the subject, between his love and it's wrongness. The song starts by referring to a "babe", word choice that implies romantic interest, to refer to the subject. The Devil says that there is "something magic about" the subject, and that he wishes them to "get closer to me". The romantic implications of the word choice and the expressions of the Devil's desire show that he has romantic interest in the subject. The Devil later also refers to the subject as "Honey", another nickname with romantic connotations. Honey is also something sweet and tempting, and in the context of the Bible Garden of Eden, that could mean an allusion to the forbidden fruit. So, the interpretation could be that not only is the Devil in love with the subject, but he believes them to be off-limits to him - at least in the eyes of God. This is further hinted at when he calls "this" - his attraction - a "sin". He also calls the attraction/love both "wretched" and "precious", using the juxtaposition of those two words to highlight how complicated his feelings are. If he is the Devil, so he should not be loving, but love itself is precious. In the first line of the chorus, the devil says that the subject is "familiar like my mirror years ago". This is a simile and metaphor, with the "mirror years ago" meaning the Devil's past. In Biblical lore, the Devil used to be God's best angel. To say that the subject is familiar like his past is to say that the subject is like an angel, like someone he would meet when he lived in Heaven. This figurative language shows the depth of the Devil's love and admiration for the subject, and further juxtaposes the two of them. A sinner and a saint. As the song comes to an end, the final refrain of the chorus changes. Instead of saying that he will "sit" outside the subject's door, the Devil says he will "hide" outside their door. This change in diction implies shame and resignation. Hiding means he doesn't want to be seen. No longer will the Devil sit and wait outside his beloved's door, but instead hide from them, love them from a place where they cannot see to avoid asking them for requited feelings. He no longer waits for them to come out and meet him, accept his love, leave their "other man" and go with him. He hides from them because he has accepted that it can never be. But still, he is outside their door, because he loves them no matter what.
There are so many interpretations about the lyrics. Just reminding you all that music is art and that gives it the power/quality to have the meaning that looks/feels best for you AS LONG AS YOU FELT SOMETHING, THIS SONG ACHIEVED ITS PURPOSE AS AN ART WORK. ENJOY IT!!!!💜

@@iomoon1155 I mean true, but I can't believe no one talks about how at the end of episode 1 Crowley is just like "no I know how you smell" to Aziraphale and like... he's trying so hard to contain the 6000 years of pining and failing
If you watch the video, it's a little more clear.
He loves her innocence; she has another man but he intends to steal her from him.
He's bad (the only thing that 'slithered' in Eden was the devil), and is saying that there are no good people left anymore anyway.
This song really hits home for me.
Thank you
Yes! I know Hozier and I have different religious beliefs but I love how biblical this song. For me it exposes how Satan is behind so much of what is the world embraces. Our temptations.... etc.
Shoutout to anyone listening to this after finishing Good Omens season 2!
Im still not okay
I'm wrecked 🥹
Specially because I've read "Pray for us Icarus" the masterpiece of a good omens fanfic. I'm just destroyed
GET OUT OF MY WALLS

“to the world”
“To the world!”

I've seen you in the comments of another video because your pfp is recognisable
This is comment was ineffable, just like our boys!
The musicianship is incredible. A beautifully written piece. He deserves all of the fame and recognition he is receiving and more. So nice to have a popular artist actually be talented and musically brilliant.

ngl the intro “BABY there’s something TRAGIC about you” IS the best beginning to a song possibly ever
What a bloody incredible song! I'm seriously obsessed with HozierMusic right now & feel so delighted to have received permission to feature some of his tunes on my channel while it takes off, hopefully it'll get him more American fans as most of my subs are American or from Japan etc! Not Irish :)
I actually discovered him because of your video. He's amazing! - and I'm Danish :))
I'm Irish and I'm so proud to be Irish aswell because of Hozier and I just heard his song on the radio a while ago and I didn't hear the name of the song but I remembered I saw that you posted a video about hozier and it was his song so if it weren't for you I would've been up all night thinking about it
Hozier was just on The Ellen Show the other day! So I'm sure most American's know who he is now. He's great!
Wut?
Powerful lyrics. Moves me to listen deeply and feel. Speaks to deep pain, loss, connection, desire and the unspoken truth about attraction. Thank you for this song!
Give this man ALL the grammys.

How are we Good Omens nation? How are we after season 2 🥹 😭😭
we are NOT making it out of the hyperfixation with this one🤞🤞
I don't know why, but this song reminds me of a road trip!
It Does! The Idea Behind The Music Video Is Genius!!
Aziraphale and Crowley, anyone? I slithered in from the Good Omens fandom...
I’m here from good omens too oop-
same man
this song is literally written from the perspective of satan/the snake
u read my mind
Yes
From Eden and lover boy were written for Aziraphale and Crowely
thats a lotta BS cause this songs so good it probably made those characters
Totally 😃
I like to imagine that Good Old-fashioned Lover Boy was written for Book Crowley while From Eden was written for TV Crowley.
And Thousand Years, there so many concidences
Hozier and Freddie were both inspired by Crowley talking about Aziraphale
Nobody:
Hozier closing his 5th notebook after filling it completely: same time next week?
Crowley, currently slithering away: *longing demon sounds* probably

It's 2018.. In the era of EDMs, Hip-hop, rap and all, here I am still listening to this almost 5 year old song on repeat.
Hozier is really an artist. No other artist has been so expressive in the past decade.
His Meaningful lyrics, overwhelming music and above all, soul touching voice are really artistic and exceptional.
His songs will always be one of the best in the playlists.
Cheers to his music !!✌️✌️
I feel like at least 1/4 of views is me constantly replaying the song.
Haha, I do the exact same. Same with Cherry Wine.

This song is much better than Take Me to Church. Someone alert the radio stations.
matter of opinion but I prefer Take me to Church
Matthew John Pace Take Me to Church is a horrible song. It's hard to understand why anyone likes it. No lead guitar. No bass. No drums. Vocals are droning. Lyrics aren't that clever. It's just a dumb, poorly written song. I was pleasantly surprised to hear From Eden because I thought every song Hozier plays sucks based on the one song the radio plays.
IMO take me to the church has a dark, deep meaning and it's my favourite song right now. But I respect your opinion.
You don't like any songs without guitar? What?
When I first listened to this song it filled me with such an immense sadness, and I don't know why. I kept playing it and now it's the opposite. I love this song.
Well i didn't expected to find Crowley in a song but here i am
I will be forever grateful to the person who made me listen to this song. We might stop talking and I might forget you but I will remember this song. Forever.
Out of all the songs in 5/4 signature , this one sounds so good and stable❤
5/4 is hard to get right imo
With the possibility of Lucifer loving Eve because she looked like Lilith...This makes me cry. This song is my light.
me, gay and longing: better listen to hozier
Big mood
crowley?
my lesbian ass can relate
I can’t like this bc it’s perfect 👌🏻
Same
This is literally Crowley singing to Aziraphale.
yep
Yep. I'm honestly very thankful for the Good Omens fandom which introduced me to Hozier. Not sure how I missed his music. It's gorgeous.
*bawls*
This man is a God and deserves WAY more than he is getting....
so so true!!!!
He is about to blow up. Did Letterman last week, will be on Ellen this week and most importantly (to me) I get to see him tomorrow night in concert. Cannot wait!
Agree my religion
I have his whole album on CD, so everytime I'm in my car late I like to listen to his songs, it's so amazing to just drive ant night and listen this, really, that gives me such a good vibes, like summertime, and a little bit of sadness, but also happiness at the same time. Like, melancholy, that I love. Amazing songs. He's just so talented!
So many of these comments are from before he got as big as he is now.. i wish i could say i was hee, but i wasn't. But I'm here now. We all are. At the very least, we were HERE.
Thank you spotify. This song is just amazing
All of his songs are amazing lol
Am here because of spotify too
Matthew Olguin they are marvelous
who is this Spotify character - was this a man made character or being, or was this brought from another parallel universe, I wonder, truly I do wonder.
anyone else here because of ITUNES? lol lmao rofl
I discovered this song on a random winter afternoon...the melancholy of lyrics the music that balances them just perfect leaving you with a smile everytime you hear it.
I didn't sign up for this feels trip.
Hozier's music always manages to make your heart sink into a wistful memory.
Crying sobbing throwing up after GOS2
Everyone making comments about how happy this song makes them.
while I'm just sitting here kinda like what??
This song is sorta sad mates?
This song is grim as fuck. A lot of Hozier's songs are. It's cool it makes those people happy but it's kinda like the people that jammed out to Pump up kicks by Foster The People. You wonder if they hear the lyrics.
That pumped up kick reference is on point. L0l
Anarchistic Pineapple there's something tragic about this.
djhero0071 Right??
Clara Azadegan Something so magical about it?
Very few songs on the radio nowadays have the ability to inspire me and make me FEEL something. This song is one of those rare gems. Loved it instantly.
*No one:*
*This comments section:* iNEFfAbLe hUsbaNDs?!!??!
I wanted to like but you're at your 69th like. But know, that your comment is appreciated.
Aditee Mishra understandable
Everyone's favorite ineffable idiots... 💖
❤💓❤ Man, the honesty of "I slithered here from Eden just to sit outside your door" .....❤💓❤
Wow. It's rare to come across such an obvious talent, count me in as one of your fans!
PROUD TO SAY THEY KNEW THE SONG BEFORE GOOD OMENS AND WORSHIPS IT EVEN MORE NOW
Crowley: *plays this song* ... And that's MY POINT
Aziraphale: your point is bebop?
Crowley: I̶t̶'s̶n̶o̶t̶b̶e̶b̶o̶p̶a̶n̶g̶e̶l̶i̶t̶'s̶q̶u̶a̶l̶i̶y̶b̶u̶t̶I̶l̶o̶v̶e̶y̶o̶u̶
Poor snek
I'm here because I've just read a fanfiction on good omens and in the final notes it said that the title was from this song, with a link to it, and I'M HAPPY.
Listening to this after Good omens S2 and reading Pray for us, Icarus.
And, Imma just say, I'm not okay 🥹😭
Here sobbing about good omens
I just can't with this song it pulls strings in my heart. Would happily sleep forever with song playing in the background
Samuel Wood Thankyou! I'll definitely be using that playlist, I've heard pretty awesome songs on the radio but never was able to find again :D
Foster Crystal Rey use shazam or google play music widget on your phobe/tablet to identify songs on radio and they also keep record of them for you
I guess I should feel lucky! I heard this song for the first time today, and my radio told me who it was... I thought I'd have no luck cause the info was coming out a bit crazy. Good thing I up-graded the stereo! haha... So happy I bumped into the wrong radio station this morning. This was the second song they played...
If you like this one, try Work Song by Hozier. I think the whole album may be choice. Very excited for this release.
man, the vibes are immaculate tonight
This song makes me so incredibly happy :)
its about robbery ....but okie
+Jonathan Alvarez it's not really
+Jonathan Alvarez I assumed it was about stealing a girl's heart (from another man)
SandyTheMaster yeah pretty much. It's about a man that has done bad things in his life and meets a girl who is innocent and pure "like his mirror years ago" and he wishes to be with her but she is in a relationship with another man. Though you can percieve the song however you wish, that's the beauty of music.
[Yes]
Listening to this after Good Omens S2 and damn it hits diffrent
Man his music never ceases to make me want to slip into a warm bubble bath with a glass of sweet wine and low lit candles.
ALL of the comments are Good Omens and it's amazing
Yesss we are taking over!
How is this the first time I’ve heard this beautiful song?
Going to be on repeat
I didn't like that church song on the radio. But this album is getting some serious underground hype, so I had to check it out. This guy is amazing. Now all his songs are growing on me. Just ordered this album on vinyl. Cant wait to hear it on my new U-Turn turntable. I bet it is going to sound so much better than it already does.
how can you not like take me to church? :O
Ah jealous man, enjoy your u-turn:)
Literally the fans of Hozier are as amazing as his songs :)
okay so there is this person im interested in and they recommended this song and omg like legit this hits 😭🫶
Im so obsessed with this song. Its just so attractive in some way. The lyrics, melody and everything are all amazing plus i loved the video but theres just something about this song that is so...? I dont know. Perfect?
Joyce Shang exactly!
Hozier is just so talented in his lyrics and music as well. He's not even appreciated enough. This makes me mad but I feel somehow honoured to be one of the few that listen to his songs. I love him so much.
this song sounds like what happiness feels like
Now this is music.
I don't man, just, the way he says "Babe", it just Does Something to me, ya'know?

That was beautifully said
thank you so much for this absolutely beautiful analysis!! BRB, going to go cry over Good Omens because of this song and your comment :)
This song feels like dry summer heat and a popsicle. Its so warm and comforting to me. It’s always been that way I just can’t explain it.
my name's eden and this was posted on my birthday, i only discovered this song today and i love it
That voice has a haunting beauty to it. Pure class
Such a gorgeous song! You are one talented man, can't wait to hear more!
Five am is definitely the best time to listen to this
There are so many interpretations about the lyrics. Just reminding you all that music is art and that gives it the power/quality to have the meaning that looks/feels best for you AS LONG AS YOU FELT SOMETHING, THIS SONG ACHIEVED ITS PURPOSE AS AN ART WORK. ENJOY IT!!!!💜
Glad to see real talent on the radio in this. Dude can sing.
