  • While many people thought that Melbourne 1986 was Elton's worst vocal performance ever recorded and that 75 % of the show contained the worst versions of the songs, we now have to consider what show is the worst. This show from Madison Square Garden 14th of September 1986 is a great competitor to Melbourne 1986. Actually, I can safely say that this show is the ABSOLUTE WORST show ever recorded and it beats Melbourne by miles! Elton had had some amazing performances on the 12th and 13th of September (and probably 11th, but we do not have a recording of that) showing that Elton still had his range, this show does not show any signs of that. Elton is very rough and he airs notes as well as sounding sick and singing multiple notes. Even his speaking voice is horrible to listen to! So let's get onto the show! The recording, though, is in good quality so that we can every time Elton's voice cracks!
    The first song, Tonight, shows right from the start that Elton has severe troubles with singing properly and he sounds more like a saw sawing through a piece of wood. However, he still manages to hit a few falsettos during the song, but I am really not a fan of this version!
    As well as every other show from Elton's 1985/1986 world tour the music being played on stage is beyond fantastic. This is also present at this show. A favorite song of mine on this tour is One Horse Town because is a special songs with a lot of tempo shifts and it has some amazing energy. But can you imagine a version which is worse than Melbourne? It should be impossible, but here it is. In my opinion the worst version of One Horse Town and Elton even apologies for his voice being in a bad shape.
    Better Off Dead is bad, but not the worst version ever. His voice is actually a bit cleaner, but still rough!
    Rocket Man is also bad, but not too bad, Elton's voice taken in consideration, but we do have some versions which are worse. Again, I must praise the music being played on stage. The horn section is amazing and they give the songs a whole new dimension.
    Philadelphia Freedom is just growls, screams, and crack making this version the worst ever. Burn Down The Mission has actually some nice moments which doesn't sound too bad. Elton apologies for his voice for the second time!
    Someone Saved My Life Tonight should have its own paragraph. It is the absolute worst version ever recorded and Elton even says before he starts playing the song "this is gonna be interesting" -- might be a certain sign. Elton makes weird phrasings which don't work and at spots he even stops singing as he is unable to hit the notes. Additionally, his voice cracks exactly 18 times during the song. This will make your ears bleed!
    The Bitch Is Back is the worst version ever. The Medley is actually fine without any cracks at all. Levon is without doubt the worst version ever! Random phrasing, aired notes, voice cracks etc. We also have the worst versions of Paris, Restless (very bad!), Bennie And The Jets (odd and peculiar phrasings, but with a great piano improvisation!), Love Song, Sad Songs (Say So Much) (the intro is horrible with Elton's voice giving totally out and he even apologies for his voice during the song!), This Town, I'm Still Standing (filled with angry birds and voice cracks/aired notes -- the absolute worst version!). Elton apologies for his voice condition for the fourth time during the show before Nikita which is actually not the worst version, but it ranks very low!
    Elton also leaves the stage so he can have a gargle backstage hoping it is going to help on his voice. Unfortunately this is not the case as we have one of the worst versions ever with Elton sounding more like a vulture. Elton thanks the audience for their generosity and he apologies for his voice for the fifth time and starts playing the worst versions of Candle In The Wind and Daniel. Elton ends the show with the worst version of Your Song and thanks the audience.
    See if you can enjoy!
    NOTE 1 -- Thanks to several people for making these uploads possible!
    NOTE 2 -- During the band introduction Elton sings a very tiny bit of George Harrison's My Sweet Lord
    NOTE 3 -- There are 139 instances where Elton's voice cracks!

    I kind of like it.. adds more emotion and some of his alternate notes are interesting, plus it's not like his voice is cracking as much as it just disappears entirely

    If anything I feel sympathy for Elton John, I can't even imagine how this was affecting him mentally, I know the surgery would save his voice and effectively his music career but in the middle of this, I know, I have to know that he's thinking "My voice is going, I know I need surgery, but this is my voice, where's my upper range going? What the hell am I going to do"? That's what I'd be thinking, I'd be scared shitless. Maybe I'm oversimplifying it, just my opinion.

    I witnessed Sydney 86, not the live recorded show, a few nights before - and similar to this, no voice in parts and just air... but a refund, out of the question - I'd pay to see him walk on stage for 10 seconds and off again without singing a note... the man will be talked about for centuries to come, long after we're all dead and forgotten.. we can't say a bad word about him.

    “This one should be interesting”
    Poor guy must have felt terrible.

    I think he doesn't want to disappoint his fans. And his a true work horse! I'm in awe that he continues. Some days earlier in Philadelphia 1986 he did offer the audience refunds, but I think the most of the crowd stayed to see and hear these wonderful performances!

      He burst into tears when his voice completely blew in Auckland 2020 as he had walking pneumonia.

    When an artist was poorly back then = Kept going no matter what. When an artists gets poorly today= cancels the tour or reschedules many shows.

      To be fair it’s good that they do that because had elton done that and did proper vocal resting, he could’ve saved his voice and he had many chances over the years. Although we did get many styles of his voice so it’s bitter sweet

    This is probably what Madonna would sound like if she didn't use lip-syncing!

    Do any of you know how hard this is to sing? He goes from falsetto to chest voice so effortlessly in the recording. Not an easy trick live.

    when he could still sing in his tenor range in 86 he was too dedicated to even consider lowering the key to sing it without cracking lmao

      He eventually lowered the key in the 90s

    I must say, that there are very long between bad vocal performances from Elton. Therefore, it is funny/interesting to get hands on a show where Elton's voice isn't particularly good. And so, I don't want to ignore the bad stuff. It's just what you here. Who wants to read all good reviews which just tributes Elton? Not me.

      Im glad that this show was recorded. It goes to show that you can't sing perfect all the time.

    That's the worst performance?
    Our pop-stars can't sing even this way

      can you people shut the fuck up with this "today's singers could never" bullshit lmfao. your past generation superiority complex proves nothing. just say you don't like young people and move on. he doesn't sound good in this recording whatsoever. any decent professional singer could beat this

    • @HugeStupidMoron
      @HugeStupidMoron 2 роки тому

      @@josephf426 I honestly think he has some good moments in this recording but I agree this guy is completely wrong, it’s like he’s singling out the rappers and some pop starts that really can’t sing and need auto tune and ignoring the fact that we still have amazing talent today. Other than that idk what the hell this guy means

    • @josephf426
      @josephf426 2 роки тому +2

      @@HugeStupidMoron yeah it's just such a tired narrative that is so clearly a product of a generational superiority complex. I love older popular music but I also love today's popular music and I'm sick of people acting like their generations music was "better" just because they don't understand today's music

    ... Man, this is ELTON JOHN, not some popstar! Even saying that Madonna would sing like this is discreditable to Sir Elton...
    Thank You for uploading all those fantastic shows but I appeal to You: please, be less critical to Elton :) I really understand Your point, I finished music school, play piano myself and have not bad ear, I guess. But it just hurts to read such criticism not from some anti-gay-activist or a Madonna-admirer, but from talented Elton John fan :) Please, consider it. Cheers.

    If I say that I don't agree with You and hurts me to read such critical words about Sir Elton John, would You block me, just like Your friends from YT (which obviously cannot dispute and prefer not to) did? :) I understand Your point that COMPERING to some others this show is worse. We all have better and worse days. But I absolutely agree with Wood Allen's and Stu G R's comments here! ...
