I have a boutique pedal maker 2 houses down from me...gives a new meaning to try before you buy. Nice option to pick, choose and find a tone that "I" want. So far it's a clone Klon that has wowed me all for 150 big ones.
Beetronics makes some aesthetically interesting pedals that definitely help define the brand. Even the circuit boards inside are all different looking with unique shapes and colors that go along with the theme of each pedal enclosure. I agree with the shout out to Way Huge, as I still use their discontinued Pork Loin for a boost.
you can tell what a pedal sounds like from the color. I always check to make sure I don't already have one of those before I buy. then I ask myself if I really need a pedal that costs more than the entire arsenal of guitars and amps (well, actually one of each) I started out with in 1967. but if the pedal has a cool color and a cool name, then the answer is usually yes, I absolutely NEED that!
What it looks like is important, how it sounds is even more important, but the names of some of these pedals are really cool. That's why I bought the Monsterpiece Stud!
Speaking of looks v. sound; I *always* check out the back wall in your uploads. The Tele trio here immediately got me! Never fail to get the "I WANT!!" reaction. 😸
“You pedal people” - I love how my background and experience level is polar opposite to Baxter but we have the same views on pedals. “They’re like M&Ms! They’re cool to look at and pour over, but I don’t actually use them! I just like looking at the cool designs in the case!” I think another important thing to take into consideration is ease of use/complexity. Sometimes you might want only one or two knobs and you don’t have the patience to play around with infinite dials and settings. Sometimes you might know exactly what you want and you need all of those switches and options to dial it in. As far as pedals that look the coolest, I think the Seamoon Funk Machine looks amazing. I don’t know if it’s a particularly good or useful envelope filter, but it sure looks cool!!
I definitely buy based on looks, but I also love designs that aren’t traditionally beautiful, e.g. Fairfield’s clearly hand-stamped pedals. Possibly 1/2 of my boutique pedals are a special run color. I’m currently making a pink pedalboard. It started when I got a Blammo FX Goodbye Kitty (with the *amazing* bunghole placement of the status light).
I bought "The Very Thing" pedal from Snake Oil Instruments straight up due to the appearance. The fact that it turned out to be a great sounding pedal is kind of a bonus.
Part of how I pick a pedal is how I’d pick a certain color of crayon as a kid. I grab or purchase a certain pedal for its sound and features and how it works for the songs I’ll be playing that gig or that church service. Being a graphic designer, I also enjoy limited edition pedals from an artistic standpoint, but that is secondary to the sound and features.
I'm in the process of building a 5-pedal board after going through a number of cheap single & multi-effect pedals. I am also a bit of a minimalist/home use only - so small boards. axe-tuner-ME Architect-OD1-GE7-Reverb(?)-Moorer ab/y-amp (cheap 5W tube) Reverbs - too many choices but a small footprint is key on a 20" board!...probably going with JHS' 3 series, but looking at Oceans 11, HoF, RV-3
I have one Boss pedal, one Fender pedal, one TC Electronics one and four Way Huge pedals. I start looking for a particular type of pedal and look at lots of product reviews. I tend to like things that do more than one thing, or that can be used in different ways.
That was so funny what you said about detention being "We're gonna keep him". At my school, you could go in and sit detention even if you weren't assigned it, to gain detention credit. Then next time you were bad, you didn't have to serve detention time. Kids would go in and do their homework and get detention credit.
1. Price. 2. Sound (what it does). 3. My needs. 4. Functionality (top mount jacks, size, etc). Usually I wait for sales, buy 2nd hand or when eBay gives me a big discount. I haven't bought off Reverb yet. I have everything I need atm, but I recently bought an ehx Epitome and synth9 ( both 2nd hand for 25% of a new one) from a rental company that sells their "ex-rentals" as I couldn't pass up the deals.
Idk what Bukovac vid you watched. Cause the one I watched Uncle Larry was pretty damn good at picking out exactly what the pedals were. And his favorite was of course the ODR1 most similar to his.
The biggest difference in my opinion especially when talking overdrive and the like is how the stack and or interact with the other pedals on your chain..and the FEEL😊
7:37 Lol I love the sound of the Small Stone and Small Clone. I have a Small Clone and suffered through the signal-suck for ages until my friend got me a Caline Lucky 7 pedal (we like finding these hidden gems in the budget pedal world and then blowing each other’s minds) with a bunch of mod fx and it is so good it’s stupid. A few of the modes are utterly useless but the 4 or 5 that don’t suck are the best versions of those sounds I’ve found. I keep trying to replace that pedal for different applications (tremolo, vibe, etc) but it just sounds so good. And doesn’t suck tone. You’d think that a cheap pedal with cheap components (yes, the switches, jacks and pots are almost always garbage on budget pedals) would suck tone but nothing compares to the Small Stone and Small Clone in that respect 😅!
I still use a Boss DD5 delay....... it simply works. I have a Boss compression pedal, CS3 I think? I also have a Dunlop Crybaby and a Wampler Tumnus Deluxe. I do not use pedals often, more like Baxter as I prefer to plug straight in to the amp. The Wampler Clon clone is real good though, I quite enjoy it.
I love the randomness of this show, like just out of absolutely nowhere Baxter starts talking about his bedroom antics lol. FYI the clown suit sounds like a good idea but trust me, those big shoes get in the way more than you think... go Pantomime instead, you still get to paint you face and its way more dramatic when someone screams.
As a hobbyists, I will buy the type of pedal based on the application. I.e. this song needs delay... well i'll go buy a delay pedal. Which delay pedal i buy is based on how it alters my tone , if i set the pedal's levels to their lowest settings and just use volume/drive if there is one... i will a/b select between on/off to hear if it adds, takes away, or keeps the same. Ive noticed a "good" reverb pedal (gamechanger, death by audio, etc. Etc.) Will keep the original character of my rig, and adds the effect. A "bad" pedal tends to make my amp sound thin and cheap, and then adds the effect. I feel like a lot of people buy based on how many different sounds/effects they get from the pedal, versus how its affecting their tone... or like you said, how it looks.
I buy pedals based on the sound I want and the price I want to pay, with a bit of guidance from reviews. The graphics don't matter much. Aesthetics is only important when shopping for guitars 😀
As a retired school custodial engineer, let me tell you that we used to love when an administrator would try to use custodial work as punishment. "See what you can be if you don't behave?" I go down the rabbit hole of “this person uses that pedal, so I need it too”. Like, I already have a big muff, do I need the J mascis one that is a part for part recreation of his? No, but it still haunts my dreams 🤟😎
I showed up for practice with a cool red Over Drive and my drummer said BIG DEAL! you're just going to mess with the knobs until it sounds like the purple one. Everyone laughed and they were right. It kind of ended my ped acquisition madness phase. I have some cool ones, but most of them forgetful.
I love pedals but I don't assign magic properties to them.. they are more like colors on a pallet. So many are a variant of the same hue and that's cool. The mxr distortion + is a variant of the dod 250, or the other way around. My favorite type are the amp in a box style. I have a few of the fender deluxe styles, brown face, tweed, black face. I don't think that they turn my ac15 into the real sound but they capture a sound for sure. BTW I don't care about colors or shapes just sounds. Keep up the good work.

I remember back in the 80' and 90's you could just look at a pedal and know what it did. Not so much anymore with all the weird names theyre called these days. Ive never been big on pedals. A wah, distortion, and maybe a delay or chorus pedal and that was it. Only use one or two now
I think the best point made was, so many pedals are so similar. If you know what you want, you can do whatever you want. How many Klon clones are out there? Just get the one that you think is cool...
I didn't on purposely buy nice looking pedals. But my board starts out with a Dime wah. Only because back in the day I only read magazines, didn't do internet. Read about features of Dime wah and decided right there that's what I want. 2003-4 whenever that was released to public. Still not very good wah player but it's the 1st on my board. When looking for a EQ pedal knew I wanted a MXR 10 band. Found a used silent modded KFK for $100. Now I know none of K King's music but at the end of my board is another looking cool pedal. Got a couple Boss pedals but not for color. Both blue, both modded, both bought used. Got other pedals but again not for colors. Most my modded pedals have different colors lights and that's definitely something I look for. In fact got a Coolmusic modulation pedal that has 3-4 sounds I use and it lights up the coolest green. That makes it worth not looking for more better multi mod type pedal. Plus it's small real estate. That's actually my biggest issue with any pedal. How much R Estate vs use. I bought all kinds of modded Boss pedals and could have a super sharp color board but wouldn't have the best sound I can or wouldn't have as much space as having 4 mini's to give me toe-tapping room. I know Boss pedals are easy to toe tap though. And I love the phaser green. But pedal sucks compared to my Mooer liquid phase, a mini.
I think more companies are starting to look at pedals as pieces of art, which is great because you want your gear to look cool. Number 1 is that you want your guitar to look cool. Everything else should follow.

Sure a cool looking pedal will catch my eye, but I wouldn’t buy it just because it looks cool I’ll look at what it does, and I know which pedals I am looking for I don’t like the look of every pedal I own, but I like the sound of them.
I watch that pedal show. Mick is super good about trying to get the sound through as pure as possible to us to make the best decisions possible.
Their videos on gain pedals and stacking them helped me figure out how to get closer to a perfect tone.

School detention doesn't exist in many European Countries
Sure a cool looking pedal will catch my eye, but I wouldn’t buy it just because it looks cool
I’ll look at what it does, and I know which pedals I am looking for
I don’t like the look of every pedal I own, but I like the sound of them.
We all base looks but the sound is way more important and I’m sorry but that 5 percent is worth it.
Aren’t folks who really know their pedals well called pedalphiles? You know, like audiophiles. 😊
I look for what I want and then I buy the closest Caline.
