I've been talking about this for years, as we need to regain our autonomy and agency with electronic devices I did a digital detox for 2 months and it was an eye opening experience, using our devices with more intentionality will solve so many of our problems I've been thinking about returning to late 90s electronics but with updated contemporary technology for the past couple of years, I'm so glad to see others out there sharing similar nostalgia I wish we could design a smartphone/pda that keeps all of the good productivity apps of modern smartphones, minus all of the predatory distracting entertainment apps. If you're really serious about designing ethical technology, would you entertain a zoom call discussion with me if I emailed you? I'm a geek that decided to study arts instead of computer science, so I don't have much technical expertise, but damn do I think about tech and design a lot. I've been looking for people like you to elaborate ethical technology philosophy, especially someone like me who has ADHD and is extremely vulnerable to how invasive tech has become, I feel like modern tech controls me when it should be the other way around...
Definitely following this project closely! Lately I'm in the mood for offline PDA like devices that just do what I want. Very good project! can't wait to see updates!
this is an incredible project and whatever you're doing is absolutely insane, I'm definitely going to be keeping tabs on this project. Good work! Makes me want to make one too. I'm curious though, how did you produce the case? Is that CNC'd?
I really like what you've done here! I think one improvement for the UX in the future would be researching some of the fancier e-ink displays that support localised refreshing so you won't need the OLED for typing (however, the 2nd screen has a whole host of potential uses if we remember the ways devs utilised the Nintendo DS!). I love these kinds of projects - Even in its current state it does what you need it to do and it's just a cool gadget to boot!
This is f**king incredible. I just explained in detail to my non-tech girlfriend every component of this device because im so stoked. I am working on something similar, a custom e-reader with an open source os. Amazing, cant wait to see more. Also, that ribbon cable is scaring me :) Can't you use a right-angled one with a single bend?
I have no tech experience just a lot of appreciation at this point, but the idea of personal items that one can personally opt in and out of connectivity, that fully customisable outside as well as inside makes me want to learn coding AND modelling to be part of this new era of autonomy cause i believe this kind of education is the only way out from under the problematic tech monopolies and oligarchies we have today. I just also want them to be cute and not ONLY pragmatic so your little guy here is hugely inspiring
I want one, I'm so tired I can't even stay awake long enough to end the video. I love stuff like this and I'd also love to live away from the one device does all phone that also serves as my doom. I wish I had a device for each task that I could turn into a little routine or mission thingy. One of my favourite videogames is all about that plus a touch of horror and I love it because you go from one machine to the other just doing your tasks, and also it has a retro aesthetic with 80s computers and machines and stuff. Fucking love it
I adore the look of this little thing. I could see myself using this all the time. The only think I might have done is with the buttons, some sort of extra layer to give a visual separation to the keys, so you don't see the silicone connecting them, but I'm just picky. Wondering how that might affect typing...maybe I could paint the inside plastic on that one part?
Bro this is actually so cool, I've wanted to do something similar like this for a music player, very cool to see Also how it has a small screen on the bottom to preview what you've typed before it's entered is really reminiscent of this Canon Typestar 6 typewriter I have, pretty cool as well
Love the aesthetic! I'm attempting digital minimalism in the opposite direction; A smartphone that does everything including desktop use, and an e-ink tablet for reading & notes.
I had a pda when i was a kid and i adored it! I couldn't find batteries for it (it was imported) and so one day my parents threw it out one it was collecting dust for a while.

@@jakenadalachgile1836 Yea they are the least worst option. But you still need to create an account to use the device, use their store if you want audio books, or use library ebooks. So they collecting data on your usage, what books you read, ect to sell and in theory could block any content they don't like. When you have so many companies that have been making anti consumer changes to their TOS I cant help but be paranoid.
I've been looking for something like this for years!!! 😭You are amazing
I really badly want to make one and add one of those transparent OLED screens over the E-Ink screen. higher refresh rate, visible in the dark completely, and also imagine the cool game effects you could add with 2 layered screens of different types!
that said, this is wonderful and I will always be a big fan of these tiny handheld PDA hacksmith gamepad things that everyone is making now, they are just too damn adorable.
Im really glad I watched this as an adult after my brain was fully formed, otherwise theres a possibility I would have ended up solely attracted to tiny diy computatos. which is all to say this is a vision of perfection. great job!
Idea for this : Add a light for easier use in darkness. Love the proyect!
So awesome - the OLED / e-ink hybrid is brilliant
This is sick! I can't wait to buy one if you ever get to that stage!
wow my friend this is my dream device... i'm getting very slowly in to the world of micro controller and stuff... but this is giveing me a push to find more interest in learning... thanks man ;D
this is fucking awesome! i love lil devices like this that have a specific purpose, n it feels so personalized and creative!!
also unrelated but love the wii u mii creator remix in the background, i genuinely jam to the songs separately when i feel like listening to something vocalless and peaceful hehe. good song choice ;w;
Such a cool project! This reminds me of PDAs from the 90s/2000s. I always used to try and play with my moms as a kid.
this thing is gorgeous even in this early stage!
This kind of reminds me of an electronic diary thing I had when I was in middle school in the mid 90s. Love it. 😄
E-ink UI looks really nice
This looks so cool, and that screen is amazing. That mix of e-ink and OLED is a fantastic mix.
It's probably too impractical for my daily use (a paper notebook and a pen are just irreplaceable for quick notes), but it would be a great conversation starter.
I do miss the cheap electronic notes things i had as a kid.
This like like an awesome reimagining of them
this video and your creation brought me so much joy - would looove to have one, even if I'm committed to paper
Gives me DS vibes. Especially when you're on the road, bored of the games, and decide to mess around with pictochat.
this is absolutely amazing, ive always wanted somethng like this, distraction free note taking with e-ink and quiet and small, this is the first ive seen that ticks those boxes!
I bet this video is going to blow up soon.
It's happening
this is amazing!
You can cast silicone without bubbles by using a vacuum chamber, or less effectively (but more cheaply) by strongly vibrating the cast after pouring; for example, by attaching a rotary sanding machine to the same table where the cast is sitting
I've been talking about this for years, as we need to regain our autonomy and agency with electronic devices
I did a digital detox for 2 months and it was an eye opening experience, using our devices with more intentionality will solve so many of our problems
I've been thinking about returning to late 90s electronics but with updated contemporary technology for the past couple of years, I'm so glad to see others out there sharing similar nostalgia
I wish we could design a smartphone/pda that keeps all of the good productivity apps of modern smartphones, minus all of the predatory distracting entertainment apps.
That is such a cute and nifty device. Reminds me of those monochrome Casio PDAs back then that has a clamshell form factor as well. Haha
Unbelievable build great work
This is such a cute project
The software is insane
This thing is sick.
Everyone here should check out the daylight computer !
thats really cool - very impressive - how many months did it take?
Multiple lol
It is so cute and cozy, definitely inspiring me to get into prototyping stuff myself 👀✨❤️
Bro's channel is about to blow up with YT recommending this to all the tech weirdos.
hey that's me, I'm one of the tech weirdos!
lmao yes we are here
Definitely following this project closely! Lately I'm in the mood for offline PDA like devices that just do what I want. Very good project! can't wait to see updates!
would love to have markdown support on that and have it sync with my obsidian server
this is an incredible project and whatever you're doing is absolutely insane, I'm definitely going to be keeping tabs on this project. Good work! Makes me want to make one too. I'm curious though, how did you produce the case? Is that CNC'd?
Thank you! The case is resin 3D printed using the SLA process
Nice project. Kinda looks like a cross between a make-up case and a pill box 🤭
Yes, I was thinking Altoids can myself.
I love small specific gadgets like this one. Pls do more!
Congrats, you invented the pda.
Pointless..
omg this is EXACTLY what I've always been looking for! This is the sort of device we gotta bring back, I NEED to have one
Fucking love it
my jaw geniunely dropped to the floor when you started typing with the oled to the eink screen
Bro this is actually so cool, I've wanted to do something similar like this for a music player, very cool to see
Also how it has a small screen on the bottom to preview what you've typed before it's entered is really reminiscent of this Canon Typestar 6 typewriter I have, pretty cool as well
Probably the coolest thing about this video was learning about JLCPCB
This project is very interesting. I am super interested to see how this project evolves!
That is a great enclosure. You can do so much with an esp32. Awesome project. I love this.
Incredibly cool little device! Love the use of e-ink and the clear design aesthetic.
Very clever and really cool design , i see huge potential here , this can be so much better
Didn't realize they made dome buttons in that style. Thank you for mentioning that!
