Rhipsalis Care: Growing the Jungle Cacti

- Rhipsalis is a genus of about 35 species of jungle cacti, mostly native to the Mata Atlantica in Brazil. It's a tropical rainforest cactus, so its care is quite different than most cacti. It also looks incredibly different, with a long, trailing and great diversity of appearance between species.
This particular Rhipsalis is an unknown variety from Venezuela and we'll be using it as an example of care for many species of Rhipsalis.

I have a rhipsalis salicornioides. It grows upwards and gets barky stems/branches with the shorter stems that are softer growing outwards. It's in need of a haircut now, as it's grown to about 30-40 cm tall and about 45cm wide 🙂
I agree with you that it doesn't like to be fertilized a lot.

I never let mine dry out completely.
The danger of that is the core can become damaged after a certain point without water and lose the ability to transfer water down the length of the tendril. When that happens they just rot from the bottom and if you try to prop above they typically fail because their core cant deliver water.
I have about 15 different kinds - all in terra cotta with a loose mix.
I water them just before they dry
They're all in bright indirect light with little to no direct light.
This definitely happened to one of mine. Sad. I just haven't been able to get it to rehydrate
hey there! what do you recommend if you can barely see the soil bc of how full the plant is haha. i haven't invested in a moisture meter quite yet but should i?
@@kimabeno hi :) I just pay attention to how much the pot weighs after I've fully watered.
You can also use a wooden stick - just slide it down the edge of the pot and let it sig for a few minutes - when you pull it out it will show the depth of moisture in your pot.
I dont own a moisture meter - I have mostly epipremnum in chunky soil mix and moisture meters dont work well on chunky mix :)

In Venezuela they grow in dark shade, usually with more branches big Saman trees.

Actually , R, bacciffera is native from tropical America to Africa to Ceylan. It is the only cactus considered to be native to anywhere other than the Americas.
Oh man I wish i had seen this video before I killed mine 🤦🏻♀️. I’m still heartbroken, i loved that plant. I couldn’t get it to last the summer. I live in such a hot climate that even some cacti and succulents can’t handle it. I’m going to try some different potting mixes to see if that helps! Drainage is my friend for sure.

Don't worry, you are not alone, I killed mine... germinated from seed.
shade, organic matter, perfect drainage, water once a week or less, mist daily.

I have a lepismium Bolivian and rhipsalis paradoxa. How do you propagate these? I've had a couple of tendrils come away from the plants. Can they root? If so, water or soil? Thanks

I have either a Rhipsalis occidentalis or a Rhipsalis goebeliana, I've had it for a few years & I tried putting it in more light, less light, more watering & less watering but it still gets dead, crispy leaves at the bottom. What am I doing wrong? Please help!

I have something that looks similar to this one.
Looks like a pencil stick cactus or fire stick cactus. R u familiar with those ? If so clip on it? I’m in Canada and growing that plant now that u mention here although I thought it was a fire stick cactus and have been staking it so whereas to strengthen the trunk. Wow now not sure which one I have

I don't believe I have ever seen that plant anywhere. If it got 20 feet long, would it still be just as thin? I'll have to look it up; because, I have other questions. Thanks for sharing the video.
No it thickens up for sure as it gets longer! Definitely give it a try!
They remain stringy if that is what you want to know.

I wish, all I know is it's 'Rhipsalis Venezuela" with a bunch of numbers after it. Pretty rare one I think!

I tried this and terracotta dries the plant out to much. Stay with small plastic pots and shady areas.
