yeah. just thought same thing before seeing your comment. Same with Navy SEALs or Detectives, former "spies" and even lower level criminals of certain expertise...no flash, no bravado, no larger than life...most look and sound dull and flat...all could run rings around most others or worse before the other knew it was happening. This is why movies like the French "A Prophet," "A Gang Story," and "36th Precinct" eclipse anything Hollywood does on crime save for maybe Scorsese's Goodfellas...or Dustin Hoffman's "Straight Time." The best don't flash.

Defense attorneys often say the most difficult client to defend is the one who’s truly innocent. An innocent person with no links to sketchy people isn’t able to provide a premeditated, bogus alibi for whereabouts during the time of the crime, he’s not able to throw a criminal rival to the prosecution in order to get the heat off him, he can’t give up co-conspirators for a reduced sentence. All the guy can say is he doesn’t know what happened, and he has no clue who would commit the crime. That’s the American Justice System hard at work in blind pursuit of the truth

Michael Franzese & Sammy "Bull" Gravano have said that the Iceman is a fraud and that they have plenty of made men who are not big earners and they are responsible for carrying out most of the hits for nothing.
