Tuning, tuning, TUNING! The Greb drum was the only one cranked-up, which makes it impossible to compare with the others, most of which were tuned down in "whack-em/smack-em" range. (Then again, you guys tend to tune *everything* down into the lower end of its tuning range.) Aside from that, I was surprised that I liked the Mapex snare as much as I did. Carry on, dudes, and thanks for all your hard work!
I have a Mapex hammered stainless snare, and out of my 6 snares... it's by far, my favorite. Not only does it tune up extremely easily, but it sounds killer at all tunings. It's an amazingly well built snare, and my prediction is that Mapex snares will be sought after and highly regarded as some of the best snare drums ever. For the price difference between the Mapex and the Ludwig Black Beauty (both brass)... there's no question that I'd buy the Mapex, given my experience with my Mapex snare.
I've enjoyed to much watching this video - specially the reaction to TAMA SLP, that was so spontaneous! I am from Brazil and need to confess I just know this channel & store recently. I wished to be aware of this store before, because in June of 2019 I travelled to Littleton, MA for work. It would be just 1 hour driving... hope to have another chance in the future to know this stunning store. Greetings from Brazil!
It’s easy to see how much Shane love the Tama SLP Spotted Gum. The original video from a few months back is great where you can see his love for this snare not in the words he says but in the look on his face. The perfect “meme” to demonstrate price does not dictate quality even within the same company.
I bought a Mapex persuader and I have had it for a few days, and let me tell you right now that the Mapex black panther line is the best snare drum line out right now… I have the heartbreaker and the persuader and I have played quite a few of the others and they are of the highest quality in every way…You cannot go wrong with any of those black panther snare drums… Mapex really knows what’s up these days!
I prefer the Tama SLP line and have the bronze and 13x7” G maple , but I have the Mapex Black Widow maple snare, from the previous Black Panther line and it’s great.
I would love to have one of the Black Panther series snares. I have the Exterminator and Daizy Cutter from their Armory series and they are great to me. Mapex has great offerings at reasonable prices.
Wow that Canopus snare should have been higher in the rankings! Incredible crispness and crack! The other drum that sounded surprisingly good was the Mapex considering the price point.
For me: #3 - Mapex Black Panther #2 - Ludwig Black Beauty #1 - Tama Spotted Gum Ok...That Benny Greb Sig snare sounds amazing too -- wow,...so does the A&F Cooper,...
As the list progressed, I was surprised at the lack of diversity within their sound. #2 through #10 provided a very deep, dark tonality, but would often placate me with their resonance. #1 was indeed my favorite snare drum, as it provided the sharp, bright tones that I look for. I personally play with a brass snare drum to achieve this sound, and it crisply breaks through the clutter and is very resonating. Thanks for the video!
Buh Buh Buh Benny...... Benny and the Brass for me! But I've got to compliment Ludwig for all of their Drums are sounding so much better than they had a few years ago, did something change over there? As always, thanks for another Great DCP Review! Ho! Ho!! Ho!!!
I want to come in and explore this place. It’s quite a distance from me but still on the same coast. It’s going to be a road trip and a lot of money spent.
Thx for the video very nice as usual. My top three would be surprisingly (I'm a DW fan) the Mapex, Tama & that Sonor, which was awesome. The playing is to be noted as well.
Great choices for a top 10 video! I think copper is amazing for a snare shell, and the A&F is a great example. I LOVE the 2N high carbon steel as well. Thanks for doing these videos.
Been using the Benny Greb (brass) as my main gigging snare ever since it came back. Very flexible with great projection and sensitivity. Mics up well. Black beauty is now just the spare if a head breaks.
I really like the tone of the Noble and Cooley- the complexity took me by surprise, and I think it would get more interesting with different tunings. My favorite by far!
I have used many, many snares over 40yrs. My favorite is still my Ludwig Hammered Bronze 14x6 1/2. Complex, Dry, Woody/ Metal sound and tremendous rim attack. Look up Drum Center's review of this 38yr old ( and still going) snare and buy one from them.
3 have been under my radar.#1 The Tama spotted gum. This drum is amazing and priced perfect.Top of the line and under $500 beautiful. #2 DW done shanes way little over $600 The sound I always looked for in a DW snare and believe me I've owned probably 15 of them.Might just have to order one with this recipe. Finally #3. Sonor Benny greb model. If I could only own one brass snare this would be the one.Sonor KNOCKED it out of the park with this one.Price very reasonable for a high end snare with all the goodies incorporated.
Didn't even know copper snare was a thing, I thought it was too soft a metal, Dear Santa can I have an a+f copper cos I have been a good boy in 2020 and I haven't had any gigs so I need this to cheer me up, thanks! Happy Christmas to the amazing team at DCP. Cheering up drummers around the World (I am in Ireland) for years!
My top picks for 1st,2nd,3rd are... the Tama (SLP), Ludwig (Black Beauty), Mapex (Black Panther) and that Benney Greb Brass on the side (runner up). I'm sorry, the DW kills it too but for the $$ it just didn't pull ahead enough to justify that cost. Yah yah I know....the Black Beauty is not much less/more than that DW so wth?? Why did it make this cut? You got a great point. I just felt its attack, tone and resonance sounded/felt better here...but I highly suggest you go tune/test one out yourself for real before buying anything.
From my original post on your 8-lug vs. 10-lug Ludwig Black Beauty video, but thought it would be nice to share here, as well. I finally found the final snare drum for my collection. First, I'm hearing the same thing as you, especially in the longer playing sections. OK, I'm one of those drummer who doesn't care for ringy snares. Every snare I own was chosen with this being a key requirement. With that said, from playing live, I understand completely the importance of having overtones present... my experience is--if they're pleasing overtones--they fill out the snare sound, so it doesn't sound flat to the audience. All of this is 10x more important in unmiked situations. If a drum has too many overtones, you can muffle. You can't do the opposite, if a drum is lacking overtones. So here's where it gets interesting. This is one of the very few snare drums I've ever heard where I actually like the sound of the overtones I'm hearing. I'm actually shocked that's the case. I've been looking for a non-hammered brass snare in 6.5 and listened to dozens of such snares. I got the finalist list down to a Pearl Reference Brass, a Gretsch Bell Brass, and a Rogers Dynasonic 7-Line. I kept listening to them over and over. In my humble opinion they are the three of the four best brass snares for playing rock currently in production. The best brass rock snare ever made, again just my opinion is the original Tama Bell Brass... Terminator... Beast...all fitting descriptions; but, as you all know, no longer being manufactured. Just as an aside, I think the closest drum being produced with the Tama sound is the Gretsch USA Solid Steel. I didn't opt for it, since I'm not wanting the Tama sound. I think the Tama, Gretsch Solid Steel, and Gretsch Bell Brass share a certain type of sound. And the Pearl and Rogers share a certain type of sound. Which brings us to... The Ludwig Black Beauty 8-Lug. It wasn't even on my radar, primarily because of the Pearl and Rogers snares. BUT, then I saw this video. If you go listen to the videos of the Pearl and Rogers, I think it's impossible to dispute that they are fabulous sounding brass snare drums. BUT, they lack something I hear with the 8-lug Ludwig Black Beauty: For want of a better term, the BB has character. There's just something magical going on there. It's in the totality of the sound: Initial attack, tone, overtones (musical, again, for the first time for me), and decay. Also, there's a fatness there that I love. I'm not knocking the 10-lug...I mean, how could anyone deny the real world "proof" of that drums performance on countless recordings over the history of modern music. But, for me, I would put it on the same, to slightly higher, level as the other alternative drums I've previously mentioned. One final note that played a role in my decision: I know exactly how the Ludwig will lay in a recording. Like it's close siblings, the Supraphonic and Acrolite, it will blend well and work in numerous different musical genres. If you read this far, hopefully there is something I shared that will help you. Peace. P.S. The Tama SLP Bold Spotted Gum is one of the snares I own. Many of the same things I said about the BB apply to it, as well. It actually sounds like I think the 8-lug BB would sound like if it had a wood shell.
Spot ON! I have a Ludwig Copperphonic, a Yamaha Maple Custom, A DW Nickel over Brass, a Dennis Chambers Stainless Steel . . . like all of them for various reasons, but went to NAMM this year and played the Benny Greb Beech and Brass . . . IMMEDIATELY bought the Benny Greb Brass and it's now my GO TO Snare for EVERYTHING with my PHX Kit!
Thanks for such great work!!!! Just bought Sonor's Benny Greb Brass and I adore it! As I am living in Germany I got it from Thomann of course. :) Otherwise I absolutely would buy from you!
The A&F Copper and the Tama were the best sounding drums for me. Adam looks tiny behind that big ass bass drum ! 😂 I think I'd like one of those DCP T Shirts . 👍
Easy to understand why these drums are in the list. All really classy...but that Noble and Cooley was like, "Move over boys! I'm coming through!". The Black Beauty was a stunner, as was the Tama. Mmm mmm mmmmm....
I know this video is a little old now but it’s great ! I’m looking at a mapex black panther persuader. It sounded amazing in this video. I think it’s my next snare.
I love your snare drum videos, I only have a entry level snare but I hope to have the resources to get a proper snare drum from Dcp someday. Merry Christmas
Yes sir I did... I stand by it in this case as well. Hard to argue with the value. That said, all of these are great and that Dunnett is a personal favorite of mine!
And so did I. In fact, in my ranking #1 would be Tama SLP spotted gum, #2 Mapex and #3 Ludwig.... the rest are overpriced pots to me, and with the 28" A&F... I just would make a paella...🤷🏻♂️
I'm sure there was a lot of hesitation to list one of the all time top selling and recorded snares first but at #4, that Black Beauty still sounds tops of all. I was surprised to hear how good the #5 Mapex sounded. For the money I'd go with either one of those two over the more upper priced N&C snares or the A&F.
They all sounded great. The Greb was not my favorite, but that is subjective, just not my sound. Canopus, Ludwig, Dunnett for me. Even the Mapex was really good.
AF Copper sounds amazing. and no i don't work for them even though my initials say otherwise. Pearl Music City is great too! Also the Mapex! ok now the Benny Greb stole the show!!!!
Thanks guys for all these reviews. Based on Shane’s reaction to the Bold Spotted Gum I went out and bought one, I would have bought from DCP but it’s a bit far to export to Wales 😢 I would love to come and visit one day. stay safe AE
Great video!!! What batter head are you using on the Black Beauty??? Thanks... Unless you said it and I missed it, what heads are on all of them? Thanks for everything you do for the drumming community!
Only problem with these videos is that there are so many variables with regard to tuning, as it's entirely subjective and down to individual preferences. I personally favour a crispy super-tight snappy crack, so in this particular video the Benny Greb sounded best to my ears, but that could very well just because it was tuned higher than the rest...
What's with this recent fad of playing all rim shots on snare demos? I don't think it's a good example for young drummers, because I can't imagine that playing rimshots with every hit will get them much live or studio work I want to hear the drum, not the rim.
Those are all nice snares, but only 1 snare sounds the best and Drum Center of Portsmouth had it for about 24 hours as it was shipped to them by accident, they kindly shipped it to me when the mistake was noticed, so Thank You to Drum Center of Portsmouth..........So this is the Specs on this Beautiful 1 of a Kind * Dunnett Classic * Tourbillion Series snare..........14" x 6.5" Year 20 Ti Hand made Titanium Shell finished in a Matte Black Coating Single flanged Hoop's, Dunnett R4 Throw, 1st Dunnett Classic Snare to have the New Hook lug's installed on it, Hypervent 1 & Dunnett * Presence * 42 Strand Snare Wires all finished in a special 24k gold plating. Thanx To Ronn Dunnett for Building me this Outstanding 1 off Snare..............You will not find a better sounding snare anywhere.......and * Yes * I Play it * HARD * ua-cam.com/video/SPgh0Vt80zQ/v-deo.html
Not to be a Grinch, but, there’s a lot of “goink” coming through. Would have thought the solid plays would be a bit warmer or have more throat, especially the NC 14x8. Still enjoyed it.
We don't muffle or mute any of those overtones. Most of them would be taken care of with very little dampening, but we leave them wide open for the video demos.
Wow! That Benny Greb Brass sounded amazing. That playing was fantastic too.
Thank you kindly!
So expensive though
@@oldmanhendo7183 I definitely had sticker shock when I first saw it, hahah. Not too surprising considering it's Sonor, though.
I like that Black Panther Persuader! Dayum!
Same!
Ditto
Agree!
Yeah I'm not gonna lie man that's sounds fucking great
Yuuup
The A & F Copper sounds insanely good. That one beat the others and it wasn't even fair.
I've never really been a big copper snare guy... Until just now. You're right, that A&F is amazing sounding!!!
I agree. That A&F is the winner.
The 8 lug BB from Ludwig sounded awesome. Canopus, Persuader, Sonor were great also! 👊🏻
Agreed!
agree the Ludwig was my fav

Missed opportunity by not using 24" K Light rides for hi-hats.
That would be insane
When I was a kid me and my buddy called guitar center and asked if they had the new 85” Ziljian crash of doom. The guy actually went and checked lol
DCP is reaching meme-lord status with that A&F bass drum and snare combo, feels like something straight out of Portlandia
#goals
Make it so.
I bought #1 in wood form right when it came out. Fell in love with that 13" crack! Sonor is killing it these days.
So many great snares, but the Benny Greb brass is really amazing. Thank you DCP for a terrific top ten.
Glad you like them! Thank you!
I could listen to that video all day long.
Thanks! Solid name, btw.
3:16 Tony doing his best Ringo. Love it. Fell in love with the Sonor. Excellent video as usual, gentlemen.
High praise, thanks Kevin!
Wow that Canopus snare should have been higher in the rankings! Incredible crispness and crack! The other drum that sounded surprisingly good was the Mapex considering the price point.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I was really impressed with that mapex snare.
Huge props for having the Tama SLP spotted gum on this. What a gem.
My 3 favorite snares are the Mapex Black Panther, the Ludwig Black Beauty, and the Sonor snare drum.
I literally just finished watching 2019 best snare
Good timing!
Now you're all caught up, haha.
Same
That Benny Greb snare is so distinctive. Not necessarily my favorite but it definitely sounds like Greb!
That A&F Copper tho... damn...
You are right about that, it's Benny in snare form!
I loved the Persuader and the Pearl´s cherry MSC
For me:
#3 - Mapex Black Panther
#2 - Ludwig Black Beauty
#1 - Tama Spotted Gum
Ok...That Benny Greb Sig snare sounds amazing too -- wow,...so does the A&F Cooper,...
What most stood out to me were the Mapex Black Panther, Ludwig Black Beauty, and the Tama SLP!
The bold spotted gum was incredible I think, just absolutely cracked
When I first saw the title, I thought, “By God a Noble & Cooley Tulip better on this list!” And there it is! And then there’s Flammin Joe Mazza!
Every best of list needs a Tulip on it!
Top 3 for me: Ludwig BB, Sonor BG and A&F Raw Brass 😍
As the list progressed, I was surprised at the lack of diversity within their sound. #2 through #10 provided a very deep, dark tonality, but would often placate me with their resonance. #1 was indeed my favorite snare drum, as it provided the sharp, bright tones that I look for. Yo tengo la Black Beauty pero de 10 tornillo!! 💪💪 suena increíble!!
Buh Buh Buh Benny...... Benny and the Brass for me! But I've got to compliment Ludwig for all of their Drums are sounding so much better than they had a few years ago, did something change over there? As always, thanks for another Great DCP Review! Ho! Ho!! Ho!!!

We look forward to having you Blake!
On the other side of the planet for me... Maybe one day!
I was able to go a couple years ago, and I’d say if you’re ever within an hour and a half drive from it it’s well worth the trip.
730 miles.
Thanks Corey!
Thanks this was a big help for finding my next snare drum. Digging
That black panther
Ooooooo the A&F copper and the Noble & Cooley snares sounded BEEEEEAUTIFUL!
Yes they did!!
The Ludwig stands head and shoulders above all the others here. Most of them seem to be a good argument for avoiding boutique companies altogether.
This my favorite channel 👍
You're the best!
That was more than awesome Merry Chrismas to all of you 👏👏👏🤟🏻🤟🏻🤟🏻🥁🥁🥁🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
Been using the Benny Greb (brass) as my main gigging snare ever since it came back. Very flexible with great projection and sensitivity. Mics up well. Black beauty is now just the spare if a head breaks.
WOW nice job guys, For me it was 1) Ludwig BB, 2) Sonor BG, 3) Pearl Music City Cherry, 4) Tama SLP gum, and 5) DW DCP
First time checking out the channel. Loved the video.

For me it’s Noble and Cooley #1, Canopus #2, and Dunnett #3.
Can't argue with that line-up!
For me it's Benny Greb #1, Tama SLP #2, Black Beauty #3
Assuming these are you preferred sizes in each drum? Like...a 5.5x14 N&C Tulip wouldn't be on the list?
Love em alll 🥁🥁🥁🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
Got a link to the over-sized drums at the beginning?
Only problem with these videos is that there are so many variables with regard to tuning, as it's entirely subjective and down to individual preferences. I personally favour a crispy super-tight snappy crack, so in this particular video the Benny Greb sounded best to my ears, but that could very well just because it was tuned higher than the rest...
Black Beauty is very hard to beat.
What's with this recent fad of playing all rim shots on snare demos? I don't think it's a good example for young drummers, because I can't imagine that playing rimshots with every hit will get them much live or studio work
I want to hear the drum, not the rim.
Those are all nice snares, but only 1 snare sounds the best and Drum Center of Portsmouth had it for about 24 hours as it was shipped to them by accident, they kindly shipped it to me when the mistake was noticed, so Thank You to Drum Center of Portsmouth..........So this is the Specs on this Beautiful 1 of a Kind

8 lug Black Beauty just makes sense!
Most of them are 6.5 in depth. Now im thinking that my next snare should be that size too
Extremely versatile size!
Are the same heads model heads used on all the drums?
Yip A F Raw copper ridiculous sound amazing
Just saw this video. Some great drummers. I like that Ludwig tho
Not a dud snare drum among them.
That's too cool
Not to be a Grinch, but, there’s a lot of “goink” coming through. Would have thought the solid plays would be a bit warmer or have more throat, especially the NC 14x8. Still enjoyed it.
We don't muffle or mute any of those overtones. Most of them would be taken care of with very little dampening, but we leave them wide open for the video demos.
Benny greb brass, Ludwig black beauty and mapex black panther. In that order
