In this series of short videos your host Morgan Rees will be discussing “Songs that Sound Similar to Other Songs” and their Lawsuits.
Dua Lipa faces two lawsuits over her 2020 hit "Levitating," with separate artists accusing her of ripping off their songs.
The first complaint, is from “Artikal Sound System” and the second complaint is from L. Russell Brown and Sandy Linzer. It will ultimately involve Outkast.
These lawsuits claim that another artist song copied their release. So we will compare a few.
The boom in copyright lawsuits is rattling the music industry - to the point where some artists and songwriters are spending tens of thousands of dollars on insurance policies.

Now, to win one of these lawsuits, you have to prove three things:
1.) You have to prove that you own the original song.
2.) You have to prove that the thief had access - that they heard your song at some point.
3.) You have to prove that the two songs are substantially similar.
What they are looking for is: Same same vibe, vocal melody, rhythm, same key, chorus same, chords progression etc.
These lawsuits have a history. The first big one to go to trial was the Chiffons ("He's So Fine") vs. George Harrison ("My Sweet Lord"). Harrison lost
A typical settlement could be a large Financial payments, credit as a co-writer and royalties.
