- Makendi, my guide for the day mentioned that they do voodoo in the town, so of course I was interested and wanted to check it out.
When I asked him in the beginning of the video how much it would cost to do it he said around 200-300 Dominican Pesos which is roughly $4.
Later on Makendi turned on me. He was a part of it all.
I would of happily paid them $100+ or an equally fair amount for the ceremony.
Instead they tried to finesse me and took my kindness for weakness.
Luckily they took me back to the hotel to extort me for more money and from there i was safer to bargain, with the help of the presence of the hotel staff.
In the end I paid them $70.

Kurt, I have watched this episode and it made me worry about you. I am Dominican and this rituals are not to take lightly. Not because of bad luck, or because the saints will come after you, or the devil is going to hunt you down (am skeptical about that part) but because you was exposed. First when they are doing the ritual they are using “ácido muriatico” which is used to unclog toilets and inhaling these vapors can cause irritation in your airways and when exposed, as you was, ulcers in your throat, nose and lungs. Severe exposure would cause spasm of the larynx and edema of the lungs and vocal cords. If mixed with other chemicals (like chlorine) it will make you pass out. The “remedies” they used were probably baking soda which make it “burn”. I was very concerned when you put your hands in it …and later bathing yourself in it. This acid is a component of what Dominicans call “ácido del Diablo” because when mixed it literally melts your skin. The milk would reduce it’s effects.
Another thing that really concerned me was how exposed you were by crossing the border alone, and then followed back to your hotel to get the money. You have no idea how many people don’t make it back.

Kurt is smart, experienced, has hand-to-hand combat experience, and weighs probably 50 pounds more than these guys.
I agree he has to be careful, and situations like this can end badly, but Kurt knows that more than any of us...... and he won't be an easy guy to take down

He speaks a little bit of spanish. In Haiti the languages are french and Haitian creole. The fact he has a camera is what saves him from further trouble. Without the camera, they'd have robbed him, irrespective of whether he spoke a little Spanish or not.

I like this guy's content, but one word of advice when it comes to risk assessment: Never put yourself in a position where there is no escape plan, where you're not in control. Watching the guy stripped naked, in a small room, door locked shut, with the other guys surrounding him, bathing him in an unknown substance... that was unpleasant to witness. You need to know what you're getting into before you sign up. And then Kurt leads them back to his hotel so that they know where he resides after they failed to get what they wanted. Not worth the risk imo. That said, all of this is ignoring the elephant in the room... when the man offered basically what amounted to murder for hire. That's when you respectfully gtfo.
