The plus I found when I reviewed one of these is that the battery life was really good. I played it for about 2 weeks, off and on, without recharging it. I believe the LED changes colour as the charge goes down. Mostly it makes a good conversation piece!
I always thought this was a phone case that you could place in front of the screen itself and allowed you to use the buttons as a replacement for digital ones on emulators.
I bought one of this in early 2019 and the biggest problem I got was the A and B buttons are swapped, compared to a normal NES controller. That bothered me the most.
I bought one of these for my wife a few years ago and it's still going. Now my son (4) plays it and this got him interested in playing older games like SMB. So considering how "cheap" it is, it has done pretty well. If you can get one for around $10, you shouldn't be too disappointed.

For a tenner, that would be a decent innards for a 3D printed little console thingy. Screen did looks like it was actually faulty. Did the flickering subside with extra power, could not quite tell.
Zsombor Udvari it’s not. A lithium battery does not normally discharge far enough that it’s below the forward voltage of a white led, so either the circuit is particularly bad or the battery is being wildly over discharged, which is very bad for it. In other words, what should be happening is that it shuts down entirely for low battery *before* the backlight goes dark.
Zsombor Udvari any good lithium ion based product should have under and over voltage protection chips on the battery that simply shut down all output when the battery drops below minimum voltage, typically 3.4V. The forward voltage of a white led is roughly 3.0. Now there’s two options here: either the battery doesn’t shut down and gets overdischarged to below 3V, or they have a really cheap circuit for regulating the current going through the LED - like a resistor instead of something mosfet based.
I think i know why that screen was getting darker when the battery gets low, it has no booster circuit. Even the original gameboy had a battery booster i think. I’m surprised the processor didn’t glitch with lack of power.
Never seen a teardown of 1 these before, cool video Elliott mate. You should of stuck it in a spare Gameboy case and made your own hand held. That would of been awesome 🙂
The reason the screen is flickering it means the battery is low and needs charging. And another reason the screen gets dark is because it also needs to be charged
This is a classic example of a "NES on a chip" implementation. It's basically the circuits of a NES miniaturized in a single chip, mass produced for cheap console knockoffs (Its that epoxy glob in the center of the board, they don't even cap them in the classic chip form because that's "expensive"). Its a hardware match of an NES, which is why the gameplay is fine.

My gripes with it is that the A and B buttons are switched, in Battle City, you can’t access the stage where you can make your own stage, and last, is that there are times when the buttons get out of the case, but not completely. So you would have to place it back. This video is just rubbish. This thing actually rocks.
