I love the fact that Edward chose this song to be the password to the secret chamber in the Ac syndicate
Ik I think that it reminds Edward about his wife
Im playing syndicate atm and noticed that when I did that mission it made me smile :)
It's those little details that link the whole series together that make me love AC so much.
Absolutely my favorite game in the franchise and this is my favorite song I will stop before docking just to finish this song
They don’t do this kinda stuff anymore 😭
The “hey” in the background gets me every time.
It’s like hanging out with your buddies and genuinely having a great time.
That extra hey emphasizes how much they're pouring their hearts out
I thought I was the only one that appreciated that, it really makes it so much better
Haha true!
These shanties are just so iconic, Black Flag was just so good at including the pirate aesthetic while keeping the best qualities of the previous AC games. Such a masterpiece, I hope it gets remastered soon
same
Agreed
hoping for a rework like demons souls instead of only remastered
I mean it technically did get a remaster when it was released for xbox one and ps4 well it looks better then the ones they actually call a remaster so no i dont hope it gets remastered because to them that means just higher saturation and some lighting fixes i want a total rebuild of the game basically and overhaul
wasn't there already a remastered version if im not mistaken?
But yes Black Flag was truly a masterpiece.
Perhaps the most iconic sea shanty, for me :')
Second that!
Third that
I'd say leave her Johnny is the most iconic

As a former sailor this song means a lot to me. For those of you that don't understand. "lowlands away" would have been an announcement made that land was sighted. When you are out on the open ocean land seems to appear all of a sudden and especially back in the day would have been announced to the entire crew, probably being yelled by someone whose job it was to stand watch for such things. "John" would have been a word used to indicate the Bowson, or perhaps the officer of the watch. This individual singing the song is asleep and dreaming while this announcement is being made over and over again. As with most dreams it takes your existing environment and mixes it with the dream. While the announcement is being made over and over again he dreams of his wife/girlfriend on land. It seems as though He made some sort of promise to return to her etc. And right before he arrived back home she died. I suspect the land they are coming back to and the "lowlands away" announcement is being made for, is probably their home port. He just missed her. Very powerful and emotional song. amazing.
Thank you for sharing. Your words makes this song more a bit special. For me atleast.
So is that why many Black Flag shanties have “Johnny” or “John” in them?
Ex sailor too I was 18 when I played this game inbetween two carribean trips
@SI TR: Have you heard the album "Sea Shanties" by Colin Wilkie and Shirley Hart? Get it!! It's a SUPERB album!! She sings a beautiful, haunting, version of this song. 👍
what does the song mean by "a red red rose my love did wear / she made no sound no words she said / and then i knew my love was dead"
Everytime the crew starts singing this, I always stop sailing just to let them finish it.

Best ac game of all .
how is it the best assassins creed when it is hardly about being an assassin, its the best pirate game but not the best ac game
YEET I agree with you bro this is the best ac game and it actually had a lot about assassins in it but some people where to lazy to play some of the side missions and look deeper into the lore of the game just wish some people would stop complaining of what they get
@@dzombaj_ga so I guess you didn't play it correctly.
@@bigchungus3419 how were you meant to play it? Assassins go accidentally in the story, sure Assassin mechanics go nicely with being a pirate, but game was more focused on being a piratе rather than Assassin. No doubt it's a great game but it isn't the best ac. Ezio trilogy is.

Commence the motion sickness.
all i've ever wanted was to sing shanties with other people, at sea, at land.... i just want some crew
If they had a first person sailing mode it would have been amazing
people need to stop wanting to turn everything into VR and instead should want to turn it into 3D. gameplay stays the same, no annoying head tilting and turning, movement and controls stay the same and everything has 3D perspective. now that's something i'd stand behind.

This song is beautiful. It reminds me of when I was younger, watching my dad play black flag with my mom just In the other room. Back when we all lived together. I would wait hours until my dad came home from work so we could play this game and this song was my favorite. I get chills from listening to this song because it unlocks so many memories. Now I’m replaying the game years later with my parents divorced, still playing this shanty over and over.
Lol your parents used to play Blackflag together? They must be cool af..sad to hear about their divorce tho
@@harsh111yt nah they didn’t play together it just reminds me of a time when they were together
I'm in a similar boat as you lmao
I just finished acbf cuz I was feeling nostalgic for a simpler time when I would watch my dad play while my mom got ready for work. Now they're divorced n shit so many years later, but this game brings me back
Damn we all lived the same life?😂
The lesson here is: men that play video games get divorced by their wives
This song literally gives me shivers. It's must've been such a fantastic brotherhood of men singing with such passion through those times. Absolutely incredible such songs and their meanings exist and are recreated for the people of today to listen to and enjoy. It's almost like passing the torch. Truly, truly majestic.
I only now realized that the whole song was about his love dying cause I was so lost in the amazing music
Actually, the song isn't about his lover dying, it's about the sailor imagining the life he could've had with said lover. It's meant to be a double entendre for the fact that many men gave up a loving home life to go to sea. The sailor is dreaming about being at home and getting married to a girl, saddened that he instead chose to marry the sea.

4 years ago I lost a woman I loved and her daughters in a house fire and every time I’d hear this song it’d bring me to tears every time. I mourned their passing for years and it took my years to recover. While I’ve recovered, I still think of them occasionally with nothing but absolutely love and joy. Today I have 3 children of my own and I’m marrying their mother. Yet when ever I hear this song I can’t help but to be moved and flashback to the time when life was much simpler.
I couldn’t imagine the pain you must feel from such a sorrowful loss, but you are such a brave man of the sea! I don’t have the words to describe how strong you are, my brother. This song, of you think about it, is directly related to Edward. He to lost his wife while he was at sea trying to make money. Idk I might be trippin
This game was released in 2013.
I am still listening to the sea shanties in 2022.
You did good, everyone who had a hand in these wonderful tunes.
Way back, I got a text in the family chat that Carrie Fischer had died from overdose. My family had always been big Star Wars fans, so the news was very heart-wrenching. I was playing Rogue when I got the text and set sail at sea. As I sat there, watching my ship sail, letting the news soak in, my crew started to sing this song without any interaction from me.
It was very fitting
this has a deep meaning..... I could feel it
When hearing this I can imagine a galleon sailing through the sea with a sunset in the background
Its about a sailor having a premonition of his wife dying. Then receiving the news that she actually died

This was Edward's favourite, perhaps it reminded him of Caroline. ☹
Well, he became a pirate for her, she was initially a noble's daughter and he was a poor guy, so yeah it is sad.
the lowlands are the netherlands, its a songs about the anglo-dutch wars that happend between 1652 and 1784
Well the reason he chose this song for the password to open his base it’s because Caroline died while Edward was at sea and this song is about Caroline’s passing while Edward was at sea
I deeply remember how this started playing right after Blackbeard died, in that moment when you just sail away to the horizon. Suddenly I had tears and I didn't even noticed.
Music truly is a thing from the heavens. God this is beautiful
Damn, first time played the game, it was 4 weeks after I lost my girlfriend to a car accident it cutted really deep, such a good song tho, this one stayed in my mind for all the years after.
Damn Rest In Peace
This game was so good and the shanties were so amazing, that I got 100% out of the main game: all maps, all treasures, all shanties, all everything. I wish someone makes an open world other than Sea of Thieves. You know? Something more into the AC estetic.
Talking about this shanty, man, I totally get the dream this sailor had. My current job sents me into business trips that last for months, sometimes years, and I understand the feeling of having a dream of his love one or ones, but then dreaming that that love one is dead, just to suddenly wake up and not being sure if it was a message or only a dream. I love this song, 'cause even though we now have all this technology that allows us to quickly send a message and get an answer back, one still has that feeling of missing the lips, hugs, soft cheek of that someone special who you simply love.
Shanties have an amazing power, I simply love them.
Greatest advice I've ever heard, first thing he was told when he woke up "watch the deck, oh watch ahoy" that's real advice just worded in a commoner english. Staying vigilant of today and tomorrow instead of grieving his loss..
It's rare that I play a game with just the games own audio, normally I listen to music or have a movie/youtube video playing. But something about this game in particular makes me wanna be fully immersed. Having the crew start singing while you sail was such a genius idea. I'm not a huge fan of collectibles in games either but when I see that music note I drop everything to chase after it.
I don't know why I'm tearing up with nostalgia
I still have the game on my PC
The hunters came close, so we hid in a storm, but alas, were still followed. 3 brigs and 2 frigates were just too much for us to handle, but we had the sea and possibly Poseidon himself at our side. I still am unsure how we made this through. A lot of good men died today and the Jackdaw is barely holding it together. As we finally saw the rain stopping and the first glimpses of the sun touching our faces, one of the crewmen, barely 18 years old, climbed on a crate and started. “I dreamed a dream, the other night”
As Haytham and Jenny got older, Edward put his pirating days behind him, especially since he was now established in London society, but I'm sure there were times, when he was looking at a sunset off his balcony terrace, he would love to be back at the wheel of the Jackdaw with Adewale and the voices of his men bellowing out a merry tune. I think that's why he chose this song as the piano password in AC Syndicate. ☠️

One of my favourite shanty
The jackdaw still holds a place in our heart because that crew even tho they’re ai they felt so real while singing sea shanties if there’s one thing I can build in real life it would be the jackdaw
After a month of messing around on multi-player, I finished the last campaign achievement and sailed on the horizon towards the British isles. My Elite sails, with the wind at its back, the wheel of Thatch to guide us toward a new future and the mount of the jackdaw, pesky little bird. As I sailed I realized I had done everything this game had to offer, I ushered the crew to sing a shanty and this.. this us the very shanty they sang for our last voyage. To all who sail the seas whether they be new or seasoned veterans, remember to cherish the crew you have and never forget the ones you lost along the way.

I dreamed a dream the other night
Lowlands, lowlands away me John!
My love she came dressed all in white
Lowlands away
I dreamed my love came in my sleep
Lowlands, lowlands away me John!

And bravely in her bosom fair
Lowlands, lowlands away me John!

Lowlands away
She made no sound, no word she said
Lowlands, lowlands away me John!
And then I knew my love was dead
Lowlands away
Then I awoke to hear the cry
Lowlands, lowlands away me John!
Oh watch on deck, oh watch ahoy
Lowlands away

I joined because I was confused and I ended up coming back to this game and seeing how it was and I joined and now I sail the seas in the pacific and I think of this song and sing shanties with the boys who want to. It’s a hard working life in which a lot of sacrifice is needed but is truly unique.

I hold this song close to me. In the game, I'd purposely take my time sailing just to listen to it in full. Nowadays, it's a coping mechanism.
