[Class Project] How to Make an UTAU Cover (Using OpenUTAU)

Welcome everyone to my class project! Today we learn how to make an UTAU cover! Now I know how many tutorials are out there, but I figured I would make one myself.
Step 1 goes over how to make your vocal track. Timing is important and you don't want to have a cover with the timing off on it. Then it sounds bad and out of place.
Step 2 goes over how to input the lyrics into the synth. Note that the lyrics may not render right away!
NOTE: I did not go over the extra stuff such as the "voice dynamics" and the "voice pitch" since this is only a beginner video.
Step 3 goes over the exporting process but does NOT go over how to manually mix the vocals to an instrumental.
The bonus step is a preview of the cover being worked on and a few other covers I have made in the past! I'll link those here too!
For more information on what's coming out next, keep an eye out on my Community Tab!

What class was this for!? The mental image of a teacher grading this (with the paimon "Hehe, Te nandayo!?" exploding & all) is hilarious! Hope you got a good grade on this (also thanks so much for the tutorial!)
This was for my Commercial/Digital Arts class! I don't think my teacher was thrilled about my topic of choice but it was what I felt comfortable with. Thank you for enjoying this silly little thing 😂
I see! A project like this makes a lot more sense for that kind of class in mind, lol. Thank you very much for the response! @@AlicePhantomhive
1:38 protip if you're using openutau and you need to make a japanese voice sing in english there's a tab under the phenomizers that is EN -> JA
it doesn't work perfectly, but just type in the word into the note and boom
Thank you for this info. I knew it existed but I didn't want to get into in-depth things with this video cause I wanted to make it as easy as possible
@@AlicePhantomhive just go to JA then JA cvvc & vcv it does the same thing but auto configures it to be vcv if the vb is vcv
Thank you, again I'm well aware of this already 😅
I think in the first step we can just use any DAW and create MIDI item, then we just need a synthesizer plugin, and then export midi item as midi file
In my case, it will be ReaSynth plugin which is pre-installed in REAPER DAW
Thank you for the tutorial i really need it
In reality, yeah any DAW would work but this is something you can access without downloading any complicated software to your computers. This tutorial in truth is basically the same for any vocal synth program but I chose OpenUTAU since it was the only one I can have access to everywhere and I chose OS as my DAW because it's probably the only one I know of lol (and its easy access online with cloud saving)
As far as plug-ins go, I wanted to avoid that topic because it's a bit advanced for some music creators. I just wanted to make something that was simple and easy to understand by people who are just getting into the vocal synth community.
I hope this makes some sense and I'm glad you enjoyed the tutorial 👍🏻
This is the most helpful video i found, thank you so much
I am so glad this helped!! Thank you for watching 🥹🫶🏻
Tysm This is helpful!!! I’ll try making a cover later 🥲😤🔥❤
Thank you for watching 😁✌🏻
this is art bestie
Thank you bestieeeee
THANK YOU SO MUCH YOU SAVED MY LIFE I LOVE YOU MARRY ME
😅 GLAD THIS HELPED
ive been trying to figure out why mine wont sing for ages pls what do you mean by "something added to the end of it" ? 😭 at 5:06
So for example, if I were to input the kana for "zu" (ず) using Ruko, it won't recognize it. Usually when you go to click on the note [and it gives that drop down menu] I always choose the one underneath the original kana (in this case the one under ず)
@@AlicePhantomhive ahhhh ok! thx!
I've been trying to figure out how to get the vocal track to sound right but I can't figure it out (everything else in the video is useful though)
it takes time and a little extra manipulation with it but i believe in you
How did you get the Japanese voice?
Depending on the voicebank, they usually have a website. Some of them I had to use utaudb to find their websites/download link.
For example, Yufu (who I used for the cover), you would search "Sekka Yufu utau wiki" in whatever search engine you use and find the utau wiki. That will usually have all of the info about and for that specific utau.
There are THOUSANDS of utau's out there so take your pick and have fun with it. Wishing you luck 🫶
No I mean the Japanese text to speech
@LilliaLulu the program link is in the description of the video 😊
Did you use cliphamp for the text to speech?
wait i don’t understand step 1 😭😭
Ok so step one is prepping the file. By prepping the file you need to use a DAW. I'm using onlinesequencer.net with an account since it's a free program. At the bottom of the page there is an option to port an audio track (in this case the audio track being the original song w the lyrics) so for whatever song you're making a cover for, you would need to change the bpm. once you change the bpm, you can choose from the instrument list (I default mine for electric piano) and then compose the vocal track by listening to the original while trying to match it to the piano roll in whatever DAW you're using.
If you're still confused, feel free to shoot me an email or dm one of my socials
My open Utau doesn’t even look like this… guess I’m not good enough.
To get dark mode, go to tools > preferences. Under appearance, you can change it to the dark theme. Actually, OpenUTAU released an update recently that can let you change the track color too and I think it's pretty cool!
@@AlicePhantomhive Oh! I’ll try this! Thank you!
@@AlicePhantomhiveI tried that to, and I can export audio,, but I can’t make the Utau/ Sukone Tei make her own sound and tune her.. my lay out still doesn’t look like that with all the sounds and pink lay out on the side.. it looks like the one I have in my short.😅
Did you use some sort of mod or something..? If you don’t mind me asking!
@@AlicePhantomhive yeah! But but how with all the notes like that? Mind only lets me export audio..
online sequqncer wont let me play all of the track and its so annoying
Yeah it's a bit annoying but put a note further down the editor and it should solve that problem 👍🏻
@@AlicePhantomhive i will try thank you🙏🙏🙏
Ofc! Lemme know if you have any other questions and I'll try to answer them 👍🏻
what is yiour tts Japanese softeare?
It's the program I made the tutorial on, OpenUTAU. Please see the description for more information on the program.
@@AlicePhantomhive thanks can you tell me the vb for that Japanese tts ?
The voicebank I used was Sekka Yufu. I don't recommend using her, however another voicebank that sounds similar to her is Sukone Tei.
@@AlicePhantomhive I see many thanks
i heart you cant import audio into online sequencer. they have scammed me
You can import audio. I do it all the time. It's at the bottom right hand corner of the editor
You draw the Girls!?
I'm confused... What are you asking??
@@AlicePhantomhivebecuase it's really good
Thank you 😅
@@AlicePhantomhive ofc!
thank you so much!! this helped me and i just made an utau cover pls check it out!!
Thank you very much for your feedback!! I'm glad you enjoyed this tutorial and it helped you make your own cover 🫶🏻
