credit that he had loyalty to England and held out in vain for that call up, which he deserved, but I can't help but agree, especially with the Ireland opportunity. Not the greatest side at the moment but UEFA is a far better prospect for playing international footy than CONCACAF.

A guy like Troy is absolutely invaluable to have at your club, to keep overly-privileged younger players grounded and set that example of work ethic, gratitude and appreciation. Guys like Troy also maintain that relationship with the fans because he'll always be 'one of them', and remembers his roots. That's getting very rare in the modern game with over-paid, sensitive, coddled young men who never have to exist in the real world.
People might laugh but I'm a United fan, and I would have taken Troy as a squad member in a heartbeat. He's a dying breed and the kind of guy you're proud to see wear your club's shirt because you know he'd die for it.

I really enjoyed this interview. What I like about Deeney is that he doesn’t try to be something he isn’t. He is aware of his ability and his limitations as a player. He didn’t look for any sympathy for his past misdemeanours and admitted what an idiot he had been in the past…and sometimes still is. What I really liked was, as a complete polar opposite to the horrendous interview Jordan had with John Barnes, he never once mentioned his colour until Jordan questioned him on his BLM views and his stance over playing through COVID. You sense with Deeney that if he wants to achieve something after the game in coaching or management he will do everything he can within his ability - as he said he did as a player - and will almost force a club to give him a job….but not whine like Barnes that the whole world is against him because he is black. I think he will make a decent Manager and I hope he achieves it
