Absolutely brilliant video, many thanks! My offside spring broke at the weekend, only a couple of months after having had the shock absorber replaced by a garage. Watching the video has helped me today to remove the shock absorber and spring myself, so tomorrow I will buy a replacement spring and rubber boot as there is a very small split in it. I am a little nervous of trying to compress the spring myself, especially as I don't currently have the tools, so will see if I can get the local garage to do that part for me. Useful to see too that you do not have to disconnect the steering arm, as suggested in some videos, especially as I do not have a joint splitter. The nearside spring looks in poor condition too, so will tackle that next!

Excellent details. Wish I had changed both at the same time. Did one side had the parts for the other side but didn't get it done. In my defense, it was minus 5 Celsius at the time. Now six months later the other side has gone. It's now 16 degrees sun is shining. Easy job thanks to this video.
On my new shocks and bump/dust cover kit, my boot/gaiter doesn't clip to anything like you show at 19:18. It hangs just slightly looser than the metal shaft of the shock, does this matter? I noticed a few Ebay & EuroCP shocks don't have the wider-lower plastic/metal spacer as shown. I checked the KYB bump kit and the boot matches the Reference OE/OEM Number: 1825487... any ideas?
When the car is lowered it may cover the end. What you don't want is the chrome piston open to the elements and road salt which would pit it ands lead to the seal leaking gradually over time.

Thanks! My passenger side spring snapped sitting on the drive. I've ordered another shock so i can drive it to work temporarily whilst i wait for springs and tools to arrive!! Wish me luck ahaha
Have a 2007 fiesta and this has now happened 3 times... 1st when I had just reversed out the drive, 2nd and 3rd times whilst stationary on the drive... 1st and 3rd times my tyre has been wrecked. What if this happened whilst driving, could cause a serious accident and injury to the occupants of the car, other road users or pedestrians... how have ford got away with not acknowledging this issue and recalling??? Thank you for the comment. I was really shocked by this as well. Like you say the fear of a ripped open tyre isn't very amusing. I've never come across anything like this before. Like a ticking time bomb. I guess you have to replace them every other oil change lol

Thank you for the comment Mark. I'm not sure an offset would fit down there. I took a normal 18mm socket and ground the edges away. You could just grind opposite sides for an adjustable spanner to fit maybe. If you search Kennedy-Pro 18MM Go Through Socket on ebay they are £8 delivered I think.

Hi there, Great video , ive just replaced the rubber boot/gaiter on the offside strut, my questions are what does the gaiter attatch to on the top mounting plate with the 3x threads? I didn't see the bump stop on your strut was it in the gaiter ?and my strut didn"t have the bump stop present can i assume that its worn out and fallen off? My fiesta is a 2004 flame model 1.4 petrol. Sorry for the long message,thanks in advance for any help you can give me. Andy
Sorry for not seeing your message earlier. I no longer have the car and sadly cannot remember how things were. Have you tried looking at the struts on ebay as there may be photographs on there of the various parts. Sorry I cannot be of more help.
Great video. So far I've seen three different videos each with slightly different steps in tackling this job. One removed the driveshaft, which is a bit overkill maybe, the other undid the track rod arm attaching to the knuckle, you haven't touched anything on the knuckle other than the pinch bolt for the strut. And the Haynes manual says to remove the track rod and the lower control arm. My question is it safe to leave the track rod and lower control arm attached when hammering the knuckle to free the strut or could they get damaged?
Thank you for the comment. No damage to the car resulted and it shortly had an MOT a few months later which it passed. I think if your careful and gentle you should be ok.

Just had exactly the same thing happen on my sons 08 1.25 zetec, I didn’t notice it straight away and he took a test in it🤫.......the spring only just missed the break pipe.
I have the same car but a slightly different issue, the front nearside corner sits low and 3 garages have all said the springs are perfect and not broken .it wasn't like that 6 months ago but it's slowly sunk lower over time .it had a new top mount on that side fitted before I bought it so one mechanic suggested it's got mismatched springs fitted ,it pulls to the left and the nearside tyre is wearing down twice as fast as the other side .trying to get someone to change the two front springs is a pain as they cannot see an obvious breakage .Not much money at this time of the year in my job so just hope it lasts another month or so and then try again etc .cannot think of any other components that could cause it to sit low unless anybody else can suggest anything .
Sometimes the springs have a paint mark identifying them, does sound like they might have different tension ratings. The springs are pretty cheap to buy. You might find the answer by taking them apart yourself and looking closely at things.
@@damiandrop8884 I would as it likely to go any day. Better to get both done so you don’t come back to your car after work to find the spring snapped on you and then you have the added cost of a recovery home. Also a new spring on one side and a soft worn on the other may affect handling a bit.

Very helpful, not removing hub saved lots of time but I had trouble with the 6mm allen key on top of shock. Perseverance is key...

That's it lol. Extremely dangerous if you ask me. I changed both sides as the next will fail shortly afterwards.

I've never come across springs that just snap randomly like these do. Bit of a safety concern I'd have thought. At least they are cheap.
