Electrolyte Repletion- 00:22
The Verdict - 01:09
Electrolytes are ions like sodium, potassium, and chloride that produce electrical charges in order to maintain the proper flow of water in and out of your cells as well as conduct nerve impulses. They are also important in maintaining something called homeostasis, or an overall balance of health. If any one of these electrolytes get too low or high, you won't be able to live. The perceived benefit of sports drinks is they replace these essential electrolytes as they are removed by your body when you sweat a lot. Is this true?
What Does The Science Say?
Based on current scientific studies available, there is little evidence that demonstrate that sports drinks keep you adequately hydrated and replenish the electrolytes that are lost during sweat any better than just plain old water. In fact, people generally get enough electrolytes they deplete while working out from *heir diet alone
Generally, if you're training is about an hour or less, water is adequate and even preferred especially if you're not profusely sweating because you don't lose that many electrolytes. However, if you're doing endurance training, or rigorous exercises as a performance athlete, you need fuel sources in order to keep your performance levels elevated, which can be in the form of glucose or any types of food etc. In this case, the sports drink acts as more of a fuel source of the glucose rather than a repletion of those electrolytes
The problem with these sports drinks is the amount of sugar within each of these as they can can sometimes be equivalent to having a can of soda. This may not be a big concern for one drink, but if you're drinking sports drinks like water throughout the day, that's a LOT of calories and sugar that can add up very quickly. Plus, they contain other ingredients like dyes and monosodium glutamate
General consensus, if you're not actively working out intensely, they're not the best option to drink regularly due to the high levels of sugar and calories.

Hello Dr Mitch Rice, my name Rob. I saw your video today which aligns with what was told to me by an E.R. Dr. I almost died from dehydration after drinking mostly Propel Fitness Water for several months after workouts and throughout the day. I still have not recovered 100% after hallucinations, faint spells, and a seizure which all started over a year and a half ago. I need some guidance as well as representation. If you can point me in the right direction I would be really grateful. Also, if I should receive a settlement I would be more than happy to make a healtby contribution to any foundation that you are a part of. Thanks!

Battling Covid again rn, 2nd round smh 🙏
@@jabbarbrown3089 same here lol, hopefully they get me through it
Great, informative, clear, short and to the point. Fantastic video, thanks!
Thanks for watching!!
Concise, informative, and comprehensible. Thank you for this!
Thanks for watching!
I work my rear off at my job. Lifting stocking amd cleaning in both a meat and seafood. Drinking water plus one of theses. Really helps. I'm so tired by the end of the day that one of these really helps
I drink one bodyarmor every day and have felt better ever since I started I have always had problems drinking water yes a very bad habit of mine but this is one of the drinks that I actually enjoy drinking I never had the motivation to drink water but I try my best.
That's good to hear! Better than drinking 0!
@@DrMitchRice Yea I guess thats true 🙂
I drink up to 2 in a day but drink them more often than soda
but then it does contain a lot of sugar
@@kamitenchi6800 I drink the lyte ones a lot
If you do not like flavored water, there is body armor water. The body armor water has electrolytes. Better than normal water.
Great information!!
19 Grams of straight sugar each portion for a bottle is insane to me
Body armor is my go to since I train 4 hours a day and I breast feed full time. Some auger helps with recovery. It’s mostly made up of water, coconut water, electrolytes, and vitamins. It’s the #1 recommended drink for breast feeding mamas as it increases supply. Far to many women swear it worked to say otherwise.
They help me work out
What about the body armor which uses sugar alcohols (Erythritol and Stevia)? Are they okay?
Probably not the best for you
Stevia is not a sugar alcohol
@@arizonatea3734 please forgive my ignorance, natural sweetener*
What are your thoughts on Ensure (low sugar) drinks?
I think they're pretty good depending on the situation! If you need extra nutrition for whatever reason they can be good!
Compare these to coconut water. Or biolyte or liquid iv
You should've done your research on BodyArmor because they have something called BodyArmor Lyte which has no added sugar.
BodyArmor Lyte only has 2 grams of sugar coming from concentrated coconut water.
It actually has erythritol and stevia...this is referring to the regular drinks
@@DrMitchRice I know it has erythritol and stevia which is not bad.
@@RALF0691yup erythritol and stevia are perfect
👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
You can honestly just get body armor lyte. Few calories and only 2 grams of sugar and still tastes good.
gatorade is just more sugar then bodyarmor is an I cannot handle gatorade unless it it's grape!~ I drink a 8oz BodyArmor every day at lunch at work and buy them on bulk when they are $1 each.
What would happen if just drink gadorate for a month with no food?
You could probably live. Not an ideal situation though 🤷🏻♂️
Gatorade is pretty trash ngl. I go skateboarding almost every single day, and on my way home I always stop at the gas station to grab a sports drink. Gatorade has great flavors, but they don't make me feel hydrated or like I'm recovering at all.
Bodyarmor is the opposite. Also has great flavors, but when I'm sweaty and hot and breathing heavy from all the cardio, this drink really makes my body cool down and recover to a noticeable degree. I don't buy Gatorade or powereade anymore, they suck
Very interesting! Thanks for sharing!
Compare these to biosteel
Are you a medical doctor?
Yes
Coulda made this video into a 30 second clip 😅
Still like power aid.. only thing that I could drink and worked thru covid..
lol "a can of pop" sounds like something from the 1950s : p where r u from?? do u also say stuff like "doncha know" n "u betcha"? : p
