I've watched countless reaction videos to this song and I've enjoyed them all. That said, I'm simply shocked at how many people aren't getting the reference to Epstein island when he says "minors on an island somewhere".
I'm saddened that the reaction has been so MUCH on the 300 lbs line that they miss the power of the next line, which refers to the epidemic of hopeless young men committing suicide. It's heartbreaking.
One thing that's struck me about almost all of these reaction videos - is the surprise at the song lyrics - and then the agreement with the lyrics - and then a sense of pleasure someone is saying what this man is saying. It's like we've all had our voices taken away and we're too scared to say anything, it's actually more simple than we realise to get what we need and what we deserve.
Also, just got to the end... and I legit had the same conversation with my mom 2 days ago - I feel like there's an independent musical movement happening right now. It's literally waking people up and uniting us, where we've been focused on being divided! I'M SO HERE FOR IT!
I loved the fact that you listened without hesitation or judgment. I think if we all did that, the world would be a better place. I watched you for Nightwish, but I think I'll chexk out your other reactions because I love the way you think.
This is an anthem for all the working class in this country, and even the world (globalism). Oliver lives in Virginia and he does pay tribute to the miners with the line "I wish politicians would look out for miners, and not just minors on an island somewhere". Yes, this is targeting the rich men in DC, our "representatives". The instrument he's playing is called a resonator guitar. Supposedly Oliver is recovering from alcoholism - hence is personal reference to drowning his sorrows away. Probably. I just try to get by the best I can. I feel like an alien on a strange planet. An observer but not really a full participant. So I take pride in what I can get out of this life.

@@JustinTheJT It's a Gretch Resonator. Guitars like this were more common in early country/bluegrass because they could cut through and be heard. Remember: There was a time before amplifiers and microphones. That's why recordings of 'down home' music made in the 20's and 30's used LOUD, often even obnoxious-sounding instruments. Cutting a record back then literally meant cutting grooves into wax masters and with limited amplification, if you wanted to hear a voice or an instrument, you had to perform as loudly as you could. It's the same reason early TV actors seemed so dramatic in their performances. They often came from the stage era, where you had to expostulate and over-perform a part so the audience could hear and see you. When the 'crooner' music started in the late 30's and 40's, for the first time, a woman could hear a man (who was not her husband), almost whispering in her ear. These guitars could be HEARD, and it's an interesting choice for Oliver, isn't it? HE wants to be heard!
It's not about weight, it's about us that are working our asses off and not having time or energy left for our families and keeping up people that are fat and lazy.😢

It's a resonator guitar, sometimes called a Dobro, after the primary brand. It's an early attempt at making guitars loud enough to be heard over the drums. It has a metal speaker cone inside it, but it's passive; it moves with air, not electricity. You have heard it in a lot of songs, most likely; you just didn't know what you were hearing. It's a very common blues instrument.

The instrument is called a resonator guitar (aka "dobro") - the metal insert is actually the top of a metal cone inside that acts like a natural amplifier. It makes it louder than a classic acoustic guitar and also gives it its unique twangy sound. Its a fantastic instrument and is widely used in country, blues, bluegrass, and folk music.

The instrument he’s playing is called a resonator, which is fantastically ironic given the nature of the song. Edit: Also the line about miners, it could be seen a double entendre. The area he’s from is the coal field so he could be talking about literal coal miners. He could also be talking about protecting children from gender theory, in laymen’s terms, protecting them from being groomed.

That is a resonator guitar, the metal plate you see on it is to make the acoustics of it sound different than a regular acoustic guitar, the way he has it tuned and the Capo placement make it sound somewhat like a banjo too
It doesn't matter where this young man is from, he sings the words that my heart and soul has felt for 30 years. I too am tired of old ass politicians out of touch with reality making decisions for my age group and my kids and so on. Sing it young man and thank you for speaking the truth.

He is playing a Gretsch Resonator guitar. I have a Pyle Resonator hanging on my wall next to my tele clone. It has a very unique sound from the sound cone under the strings. It is based on the Dobro, however it is to played like a regular guitar, where a Dobro is played laying flat and using a steel like you would a lap steel guitar. You can use a slide with a Resonator and it will sound like using a steel on Dobro. And you have picked up on the messaging in the song. It's the voice of all of us. It's tired, it dreams for the world where things were somewhat simpler. And it's calling out those in power and authority for their interference and influence peddling. When I was a child, a high school graduate could get a good enough job to buy a house and have a family and do it on one salary. Now one salary won't even pay for your groceries.
Oliver singing it str8 and true, coming from his heart. His guitar is called a dobro, I believe some call it a resonater guitar. Has a very unique sound that I love

Loud and clear 😬 Oh my, if you don’t know about the minors on an island somewhere reference, you got a whole lot of awakening still ahead of you! Much love and strength to you all 🥰
Love your reactions! He is talking about minors as in protecting our kids. He's also saying if you're 5''3" and 300 lbs. then taxes aught not to pay for your bags of fudge rounds (Little Debbie cakes) while hard working men are working themselves 6 ft. into the ground. He's slamming the obesity in this country who take full advantage of welfare to pay for all their crap food. Welfare shouldn't pay for people's junk food and enable unhealthy habits. I'm pretty sure all taxpayers and hard working men and women would rather keep their money, rather than give it to the lazy who don't help themselves. Meanwhile hardworking citizens are working to the bone 70+ hrs a week just to make it by... And they still have to pay a percentage of what they make to the lazy. It's not right.
What a stupid fucking comment. First of all why do you think that it's only lazy people on welfare? I have been on food stamps many times and I garuntee you don't work harder than I do. I'm a journeyman plumber, been working 60 plus hours a week since I was 17. My wife and I get food stamps to help supplement. We both work and pay taxes. And guess what? Sometimes we buy junk food with our food stamps. Sometimes we buy sugary cereal for the kids and sweet tea for bbqs.
It’s about both working class people and Miners. You got it right!! The line “I wished they cared about Miners, not just minors on an island somewhere”. The word play is fantastic and Oliver has an incredible voice raw with pain. When you live surrounded by people taking advantage of the system while you’re working overtime hours for bs pay you get it. It’s not about who is doing it but the fact that hard work 😓 doesn’t seem to pay off anymore. I spent the past few years being censored by the government aka big tech for simply saying true things. I love the little bit about how “they don’t think you know, but I know that you do” love your breakdowns Britt ❤
Yeah I mean it's an interesting story. Just not anywhere near reality. I mean no one is actually "taking advantage of the system" I mean what are they taking advantage of? A few hundred bucks of food stamps a month? God forbid. No sorry their are not people In American streets with nothing to eat. If you go hungry in this country its your own fault.
It's a Gretsch Resonator Guitar. A resonator guitar or resophonic guitar is an acoustic guitar that produces sound by conducting string vibrations through the bridge to one or more spun metal cones (resonators), instead of to the guitar's sounding board (top). Resonator guitars were originally designed to be louder than regular acoustic guitars, which were overwhelmed by horns and percussion instruments in dance orchestras. They became prized for their distinctive tone, and found life with bluegrass music and the blues well after electric amplification solved the problem of inadequate volume. Resonator guitars are of two styles: Square-necked guitars played in lap steel guitar style Round-necked guitars played in conventional guitar style or steel guitar style But this song isn't about art. This is an awakening. This is about the message.
Country music industry should take notes!! They could learn from this guy. This song is #1 on itunes... Rolling Stone magazine hates it.. They think hes a ray-sist.. 🙄
It’s a resonator guitar. They are also called Dobro, but that is a brand name owned by Gibson. Used primarily in bluegrass, country and blues. It’s the type of guitar referenced in ‘The Ballad of Curtis Loew’
Britt, apparently he struggled with alcoholism and some mental health issues. I read that he'd been sober 30 days and broke down humbly and asked GOD to bless him in his pursuit of music and that he would devote himself to remain sober. YAHWEH bestowed a wonderful blessing upon him! We can do all things in life when blessed by our Creator!
His voice is evocative, emotive, I can feel it. Singers like Kurt Cobain and my favorite singer Billie Holiday when they sing about pain, heartbreak, loss you believe them! I believe that Anthony is experiencing what he sings about. That is a gift and talent.
@2:20 your question about mining towns holds true for most of those factory towns scattered around the south, same stuff different industry. He's playing a resonator guitar sometimes called a dobro.
My take on welfare and bags of fugde rounds lines. For a lot of people it is a big step to ask for welfare support, where others take advantage of it. Also the welfare system is a way of the government to keep you dependent and under control. Getting out is difficult and when working you get even less then with welfare and benefits. Love from the Netherlands. Ps the miners refer to the coal miners and minor to Epstein Island, the favorite place of Andrew.
“I wish politicians would look out for miners, and not just minors on an island somewhere.” You were just talking about miners! The 2nd part is a reference to Epstein island.
Let me add that the money that goes to “help” other countries isn’t to help them. It’s to either bribe, pay off or launder the the money. How refreshing to see a downright wholesome song about what is true today! My parents were depression era. Do people think we've got it tough today? Good thing to know. The "good old days" were never that good. Black lung disease is also less common for miners today.
The standard of living higher in 2023 but the life was better and easier in the 80s and 90s when the dollar was strong and politician hasn’t sold out the country to foreign interests
We traded our souls for a bellies full of toxic chemicals, a society full of obscenities, the loss of a national identity, and worst of all our hopes and dreams. Our culture is stagnant, our movies and TV shows are poorly written, our news is all fake and disingenuous, and our politicians HATE and DESPISE us so much they'd rather enrich themselves halfway around the world then meet their obligations here. So yes, your depression era parents saw some dark days, lived through the Golden Age, and would/do completely disagree with the direction we're heading, if they have any sense left. It's not enough to survive, you have to live as well.
It’s called a Resophonic guitar. They were invented in a time before amplification in an attempt to give the instrument more volume. Since that time it’s sounds and uses have been used in everything from blues and rock in the “round neck” version which is played like a regular guitar, to country and bluegrass with the lap steel sound of the “ square neck” or Dobro version of the guitar which is played with a slide like a steel guitar. Either way the resophomic guitar has been around since before the civil war and the sounds it makes are still sought after today by musical artists of all genres.
He’s playing a resophonic guitar. Also known as a dobro. The style can be played like a regular guitar like he’s playing or on the players lap or flat. Jerry Douglas is a very popular flat style dobro player. I have the same dobro as Oliver has only mine is played flat so the neck of the dobro is squared. Oliver’s has a round neck, so it’s played as a regular guitar. The metal part has a cone in the body of the dobro and helps resonate sound outwards. The instrument is usually played in bluegrass, country, delta blues, and Hawaiian music. It was invented in Hawaii.

Absolutely right. Politicians, lobbyists, and corporations are doing all they can to maintain control. It doesn’t matter which party letter is beside their name.

Yes, goes over a lot of people's heads. I guess it demonstrates how much the media controls people's thoughts.

So I can sit out here, and waste my life away
Drag back home, and drown my troubles away

Lord knows they all just want to have total control
Wanna know what you think
Wanna know what you do
And they don't think you know, but I know that you do
Cause your dollar ain't shit, and it's taxed to no end
Cause the rich men north of Richmond
I wish politicians would look out for miners, and not just minors on an island somewhere
Lord, we got folks in the street, ain't nothing to eat
And the obese milking welfare
Well God if you're 5 foot 3 and you're 300 pounds
Taxes ought not to pay for your bags of fudge rounds
Young men are putting themselves six feet in the ground
Cause all this damn country does is keep on kicking them down

Dude i have prided myself in no emotion. Cold emotionless.
I broke down and wept. More than one time. I stand with you brother.

Absolutely love this song and all the reaction videos of it that I’ve seen so far, including yours. You have the most expressive facial expressions, I loved watching those too.
I think that's a resonator guitar. They're louder so they won't get drowned out by other instruments and it gives them a very unique 'twangy' sound.
Its called a Dobro. Normally it is played flaty with a pick and bar on the frets but it can be played like a guitar.
@@JustinTheJTDobro is a brand. Which has become synonymous with the item. Kinda like Kleenex or ZipLock. It’s a resonator guitar. A Gretsch I believe.
Correct , it's a resonator guitar , before electric guitars . It's not a dobro which has a much thicker neck
It's made from steel too. Didn't see that here so I thought I'd chip in ;)
It's not about weight, it's about us that are working our asses off and not having time or energy left for our families and keeping up people that are fat and lazy.😢

Curtis Lowe played one.
Jerry Douglas is a master of the dobro. Love to see and hear him play
country, and in this case folk, music have always had a unique story-telling capacity. And Oliver happens to be telling a story we can all relate to and that is currently very relevant and cuts through all the BS. Thank you for your reaction Britt. Gosh, Darnit! This is precisely what I am trying to instill in my granddaughter. She is 14. And she is catching on. Thank you Britt. She loves you too. :)

He could also be talking about protecting children from gender theory, in laymen’s terms, protecting them from being groomed.
i think this man has come along at a time thats needed kinda like when hank williams came alone and brought a genuine sound and songs that resonates with people across many spectrums of the united states and like hank williams, oliver anthony has tapped into his soul and given us something special that you can feel....
That is a resonator guitar, the metal plate you see on it is to make the acoustics of it sound different than a regular acoustic guitar, the way he has it tuned and the Capo placement make it sound somewhat like a banjo too
This is what Hank was talking about when he said his blues were not his daddy's blues. It's the blues that is grabbing you by the heart.

It's a Gretsch Resonator Guitar.
A resonator guitar or resophonic guitar is an acoustic guitar that produces sound by conducting string vibrations through the bridge to one or more spun metal cones (resonators), instead of to the guitar's sounding board (top). Resonator guitars were originally designed to be louder than regular acoustic guitars, which were overwhelmed by horns and percussion instruments in dance orchestras. They became prized for their distinctive tone, and found life with bluegrass music and the blues well after electric amplification solved the problem of inadequate volume.
Resonator guitars are of two styles:
Square-necked guitars played in lap steel guitar style
Round-necked guitars played in conventional guitar style or steel guitar style
But this song isn't about art. This is an awakening. This is about the message.

It's so good to see you again. I'm glad you're doing well. The "Rich Men North of Richmond" are our US politicians in Washington, DC.
it's called a Dobro... popular in country music for its twangy sound. Its an acoustic guiter with that thin steel plate mounted over the hole.
