  • For this episode, we traveled down to Miami, Florida to visit master of Two Little Fishies, Julian Sprung. We got together with him and we talked about using algae as a effective filteration method for our reef aquariums and we busted some myths along the way.

    The first time I ate uni was with my wife in Hokkaido Japan. I was a little dubious about what this stuff was going to taste like but my wife, who had lived in Tokyo for seven years insisted that I would love it. I put it in my mouth and let it dissolve on my tongue. I looked at my wife and just said it tastes like the sea. Between oysters and uni I don't think you can get closer to the place where they grow.
    Cheers,
    Chris

    Very knowledgeable reefer. I had the opportunity to shake his hand along with a few ? s to ask him at reef poolaza in NJ last year.. Very humble person, and he signed one of his books.

    Great discussion. After many years just from my point of experience, the best low maintenance setup is a large skimmer that's run a few hours a day and an algae scrubber. The oversize skimmer means I empty the cup about once a month or less, the scrubber by weekly if that. Also I notice the silence when the skimmer is off :) my scrubber initially grew red algae, now it does green near the outlet and mostly brown and a gelo type clear algae. I maybe change 20% water a year. I also dose Himalayan rock salt! Yep call me crazy but I've seen positive colour responses from dosing it, my reason is I believe it's replacing trace minerals and other unknowns all be it from an ancient ocean from millions of years ago :) I'd be careful on cheap brands that might put anti caking agents in. I'm not condoning it's use, just an experimental thing I'm doing. As I constantly experiment on my setups. My system is also partly sunlit. Julian sure knows his stuff and like a champ always quotes his sources!

      Jestronix Handerson wow! Himalayan rock salt?!? That’s first for me.

      Recently I totally removed my skimmer, loud and took up space and even with a few hours a day it was stripping my tank, zero nitrate, zero phosphate, turf scrubber is silent and best part is it grows what ever speed it wants, which I believe leaves the tank clean but not stripped and in balance. Long as it can pull out your max input, you have a balance. Just size it right.

    My tank is the perfect testament for this. Since I started using a good Kessil refugium light, my refugium is growing crazy fast and my skimmer produces almost no skimmate now.

      Those are amazing lights, Im reading this one year later and even in fresh water they are amazing light, I have tried them in both reef and fresh.

    Very well said. . I'm a big fan of your writing. I liked you take on the calcium solubility in reef systems. How do you feel about the use of micro bubbles in a reef tank to induce gas exchange and CO2 displacement?

    Great video. I'm fairly new to reefing but I have a problem with my cheato always dyeing in my refugium. I haven't been able to find an answer to this puzzle. Do you have any thoughts on the matter? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

      Can be multiple different issues.
      Light may not be strong enough
      Not enough nutrients
      Not enough iron
      Let's test what we can and check nutrients and iron.

    • @tilexcan
      @tilexcan 5 років тому +1

      Using Kessil H380 on 11
      hour cycle opposite the display. Phosphate is .32 and nitrate 12. Just bought some iron to try with my next batch of cheato. No algae in display and everything is growing well.

    • @Reefscom
      @Reefscom  5 років тому

      @@tilexcan certainly not the nutrient or the light. Check your iron level before dosing and let me know. :)

    • @tilexcan
      @tilexcan 5 років тому

      I have ordered a test kit for iron and I have a bottle of iron supplement. What level iron do you run in your tank?

      Hi, it's called turf algae scrubber. that unit is from 302 aquatics.
