What a precious video! Julian Sprung is truly an important man of the reef aquarium world, and his humility seems limitless! I don’t count the nights I spent reading these books, many years ago. It highlights one very important thing: time, long time! Presenting super aquariums, super equipped, that have only a few years of life is not the same thing than an aquarium that’s decades old and filled with beautiful colonies that were originally small fragments . Julian is certainly a man of great patience and serenity, and its contribution to the knowledge of this fascinating world will remain for a very long time. Thank you!
This has to be one of MY most FAVORITE videos. Being from Miami, and fishing in the Mangrove estuaries with my Dad, this makes me want to start a mangrove tank.
We are so glad you enjoyed the video!! And that’s awesome that you were able to gain some inspiration from this video as well! Thank you for watching!!!!
Thanks for your information. Julian's explanation was absolutely helpful and professional. I am now able to grow my mangroves a lot better based on his information. Cheers! From South Korea
This is life goals right here. As an industrial tech the control panel impressed me the most, the amount of custom programming to set up the PLC to run everything is impressive. The vfd setup costs more than the average house...
I am trying to get back into the reef hobby after awhile of absence and I only have one of my 125 gallon reef tanks in pieces in my home in Las Vegas. Well I am super happy to see the natural way of reef tanks nowadays. I was into that long ago but experimenting. Back then I took down my original 125 gallon that had an overflow box etc and miracle mud sump with macro algae that died the macro algae anyway and replaced with a tank identical but plumbed with a sump with NO SKIMMER and two very high volume IWAKI pumps many times more than required for that tank as rated and a UV in line sterilizer, but the key different was no SKIMMER, hundreds of pounds of live rock, and NO WATER CHANGES FOR 10 YEARS JUST ADDING WATER TO REPLACE THE EVAPORATED WATER BASICALLY! I had most of corrals thrive and fish were healthy overly stocked too in a big way used to have like 50-70 fish in addition to corals at any given time in addition to invertebrates of course. The 9th year they started to die and 10th the last huge blue hippo tang (I had 15 originally) and the Red Sea purple tang with yellow tang died lol. All I did was add tap water and some salt a handful once in awhile and squirt of ca and mg and strontium occasionally. It rocked. So now I see people are thinking like you have been doing for years like the biologist in all of us are excited :) Julliane is The Godfather of reef tanks :)
It's awesome to see that Julian applies bonsai techniques to keeping his mangroves. I just learned that red mangroves don't export salt through the leaves from this video, always thought that all mangroves exported salt through the leaves, now I know and maybe I'll try one in one of my freshwater setups to see how it does.
Hi Julian, you need to cut below a node for a cutting (do a second cut), by cutting above the node you introduce a disease vector to the cutting (hence why they always shrivel up and die, generally from a bacterial infection). Try cutting below the node and place the cutting in a Grodan Rockwool cube and leave in fresh saltwater, it should produce new fine root growth from the bottom of the cube after a few weeks. No need for cutting powder.
I will give that a try-- it would definitely NOT work with saltwater, but if you are right about the position of the cut, it might work in freshwater. Fingers crossed, thank you for the suggestion! Julian
Beautiful setups (pond and reef with show refugium). I do wonder if the Mangroves in your back yard are in fresh or salt water. If fresh, do you slowly acclimate them to salt? Thanks
I would love to setup a pond like this in my front yard. I live in the Caribbean so the year round temps don't change very much. Do you have a video on setting up something like this as far as proper filtration and maintaining the Salinity etc..?
Be careful if the water gets too hot in the Dominican Republic, the Caribbean Greater Antilles and I know that in the summer the water in the pools gets too hot until the evaporation point.
ok so far this is the very well information about mangrove trees. I have growing in my aquarium last 2 years. and its diffucult for me to grow because i live in Czech Republic so I can not leave outside.
I absolutely adore this concept, though I live to far north to capitalize on an out door system. His "pond" is quite pretty. Mangroves just feels like a natural extension and progression of a reefing hobby. I'm happy to see both mangroves and macro displays gaining popularity. While I have no intention of putting a tree in my reef, I have seriously considered plumbing a shallow second tank off my sump for that very purpose. Perhaps giving a space for other species like decorative algae, sea grass, or aggressive soft corals like GSP to grow near the tree roots?
I wont lie this was a small dream i had when i bought my house finally now years later im building a koi pond next year and maybe if that goes easy and well attempt a salt water pond as experiment as easily guess in the reefing hobby 😅 the house if full of tanks now!
Julian, A very interesting video, I find your style of reefing very exciting. Coming from cold and wet England, I love the idea of a garden pond containing corals and clams :-). Hopefully next year I am going to take a Florida vacation, one place on the agenda will be WWC.
Good day mate, splendid what you have done. I have to grow mangrove indoor, my question is how much hidroponic light required? I hv grown mangroves with 5 watt uv light and they died after the first leaves sprung
Julian would be the guy to provide the best answer to this question. If you head over to his website, you can find his contact information and ask him any questions!
I would love to do something like this, but I would use the long plastic planter that you would raise vegetables in. I would have it in a greenhouse that I would like to have.
Absolutely suggest using Pothos vines for any freshwater fish tank. I hope people start using it more. It’s good for the fish and good for the Home. They absorb a lot of ammonia out of the air
@@WorldWideCorals I started thinking that bogs are also low in nutrients. I want to someday plant a mangrove (probably a black mangrove with carnivorous plant).

Mangrove like Shallow water reef tank =) In fact what would be good, but would have to have the space to do so, would be to create a small beach on one side of the tank which slopes gently towards a greater depth to recreate the initial environment. I would love to setup a pond like this in my front yard. I live in the Caribbean so the year round temps don't change very much. Do you have a video on setting up something like this as far as proper filtration and maintaining the Salinity etc..?
It would be similar to a reef tank, except during a heavy rain or storm. You would have to check salinity and add salt after a storm.
Be careful if the water gets too hot in the Dominican Republic, the Caribbean Greater Antilles and I know that in the summer the water in the pools gets too hot until the evaporation point.
