Even if there are two kids you can say 'the oldest -the youngest'. I was once taught that only 'the elder, the older, the younger, the taller ' were correct. 🤦♀️Thank you for your language insights!
I would probably use “the older one” or “the taller one” and that would easily be correct!

Yes, I’m not sure why it feels natural to say “she’s the oldest (child) in her family” there’s multiple people in the family but maybe only two kids!

I just finished S1:E15. And I must say, I might miss the gym but I do not want to miss your podcasts 😊After each episode, I talk to myself. Sometimes I do it in-front of the mirror with a tad louder voice. So that I can hear my pronunciations as well. I've noticed something interesting that I want to share with you and get your advice.
When I start speaking, sometimes my pronunciations sounds like Mark's and other times, it resembles Kat's, even within the same conversation. I think I might be subconsciously trying to mimic both of you. Because you both are my favorites! I’m not sure if this is okay or I should be doing something differently. If you have any guidance, I would be very grateful!

Hi there! Thanks so much for reaching out. I'd say this is a very very good "problem" to have :)
It sounds like you can naturally mimic both me (Kat) and Mark, which is actually going to be pretty fun in the future because you will more easily "code-switch" or change easily between accents, situations, vocabulary, etc. depending on your situation.
Personally, I think you will naturally find your favorite words and accent based on the people you talk to. You might find that you like using a more British accent in some situations or you might prefer American with different people.
Personally, I think this is the beginning of being able to easily blend into different English conversations to make people feel more comfortable and easy going in the future.
I'm actually very similar, I love learning new words and phrases in different accents, and I like to use them when I'm traveling or when I'm chatting with new people (I do this in Spanish and French as well!) When I was living in New Zealand working, my accent got pretty mixed up, and that's okay! It's kinda fun that way.
Hope that gives you more confidence to just keep doing what you're doing!

I think it’s just about being polite when we are talking about seniors (the oldest group of people in our society ages 65+)
Old people: this is probably the least polite
Older people: more polite (talking about seniors)
The elderly: more formal (you might hear this on the news or read it in an article)
When we talk about our kids (if you have 3):
My oldest
The middle child
My youngest
If you have 2 kids, it’s funny we can still use youngest and oldest, I guess it’s to say of all the kids I could have she’s my oldest and the other is my youngest.

Thank you for teaching us real living English. The phrase 'have got a real knack for something' reminds me of the collocation 'be knackered' = be exhausted (is it a rude one?). I wonder if they are semmantically connected somehow?

I (Mark) have only ever heard of "knackered" being rude only once before, and I think nowadays that's quite an 'old-fashioned' way of treating the word. Almost everyone I know uses it to mean "really tired" or "exhausted", and that includes me as well.
I have no idea if they are actually connected, but I looked it up and apparently there is an obsolete (very old and unused) word: "knacker" which apparently means "to kill, to tire, to exhaust" - so it seems like it stems from that word. I can't say how that's connected to "skill" though - maybe from battles and sword fighting!?

Awesome lesson as usual ! Thank you ! I have a question: I thought that you would use my younger /my older kid when only having two of them but my oldest/youngest for three or more … am I right ?
Good question! Actually if you have 2 children, we still say: "my youngest" and "my oldest".
If you have 3 or more children, there are a few different combinations.
- If you have 2 daughters and 1 son = "I have my son, my first daughter and my second daughter."
If you have 2 sons and 1 daughter = "I have my daughter, my first son and my second son."
Interestingly, the English is not super clear in these kinds of situations, so usually when parents have 3 kids, they will use their names, and you will have to ask how old they are and what "order" they were born in! I hope that makes sense!
@@highlevellistening Thank you so much for clearing this up! These are types of grammar rules you see in books and realize that in real life native speaker sort of break the rule: we learn: comparative is used when comparing two entities / superlative: three or more.
