Probably the best “how to” video I have ever watched. No annoying music. Great attention to detail and camera work. No nonsense. Just pure rational help. Thank you.
Nice job Shannon. I’ve done this three times over my life. The first time around UA-cam wasn’t a thing yet so I just figured it out. You make it much easier for people today
Some people don't have the aptitude for DIY. They think everything is too complicated and need to let a "pro" handle it. Shannon makes incredible videos and gives the average DIYer confidence to tackle projects on their own. I think the one thing that set's Shannon's videos apart from other UA-camrs is that he shows the whole process no matter how insignificant it may seem. I'm about ready to close on my house and needs some work so I am incredibly happy to have these videos for reference. Keep up the great work Shannon!
Well, easy in appearance, he also knows all the steps many people take this on and spend substantially more time and effort my time, and my effort are worth more than it would cost to call in a garage door tech for a semi complicated change like this not saying I couldn’t do it, but I’d rather use my time to do something better
Thanks for the video. I wound up just ordering the whole piece with the gears already installed. You did a great job explaining the process and it was easier then i thought and saved me some money not having to replace the whole unit, thanks again
Just wanted to give a big huge shout out to you for your help. I followed your instructions. They where absolutely spot on. Just one minor screw up, but got the task done. Now my wife thinks I’m a rock star 😀 Thank you so much 👏🏾👍🏾
This is one of the most helpful videos I've ever seen on UA-cam. We almost went down the path of buying an entirely new garage opener, only to discover that this is our exact problem, and all we need is a $20 part?! (which we'll be buying through your amazon link). Every step Shannon shares are SO helpful, well explained, and filmed perfectly. Just subscribed for more.
I put out info to my neighbors on Nextdoor App about how to replace the capacitor in one of these and the responses were "Why didn't you just call a repair guy?" My response, " I didn't want the whole motor replaced for $300!' I think people were a little pissed I had repaired it on my own!!! SMH!
I am glad that I watched My problem is the gear that rotate the chain or the gear that chain pull the door is bookends. I do I take apart and we’re canIbuy it.thank you Antonio
Thanks for the starting tips! Could not lift out the shaft because it is too close to the ceiling. Would have had to drop the whole assembly. Then figured out an easier way. Set door shut. The motor is held with 4 easy screws. Dropped it down and had access to the gear. Drilled away the gear material around the pin and with a c-clamp and an old nut as spacer drove out the pin. Used the clamp to push the pin back in, but had to use the worn gear mounted just below the new one to create a wide enough prying surface for the c-clamp. Nice because you do not touch the chain and you do not disturb the timing.
Shannon - I found this video yesterday, followed the steps and replaced the gear just like the video. Exceptional. Thanks. I have followed several of your videos and find them very easy to follow and instructional. Thanks again.
When I came across this video I was not sure if the problem I had was the one the video referenced. I had to laugh when I opened up the bottom panel of the garage door opener and it was filled with the white shavings from the gear just like in the video! Every detail was right on point. Thank you for saving us from buying a new opener with this simple fix!
Just had this happen to me a few weeks ago! It looks intimidating when you see all the shredded pieces. I ended up replacing the whole unit and also the trolley. The door was catching and making it stop halfway up. Everything was about 15 years old. Lasted a good while. Great video!
8:00 THIS STEP IS HUGE. I don't know who needs to see this, but if you go with a new assembly (vs replacing the gear alone) save yourself 10 minutes of fiddling and drive the screws into the cap BEFORE you place the gear/shaft assembly into the motor unit. The screws that go into these holes are self-tapping. You will not be able to tap the hole closest to the motor with just your fingers or a little baby 5/16 wrench, and the screw will keep falling out resulting in many ladder climbs or poking and fishing the screw out from the motor bracket. However, once the screws tap each hole and you drive each screw all the way in before backing them out again, you'll be able to easily finger-tighten all three screws while you have it up in the air in the motor unit. Make the job EASY for yourself, please! Thanks again, HouseImprovements!
Excellent! I kicked my trash can this morning when my SUV's tailgate and garage door collided and started making this noise, cause I thought I was going to be out hundreds of $'s. Now I can take care of it myself this weekend. I love Shannon's clear and straightforward explanation of the steps involved. Great job!
Hey thanks, had a bad morning and after adjusting the door stop not to hit so hard, it finally got too low to get the car out, so thought id adjust it up farther. Got it almost perfect but though just a tad farther. Well that little adjustment sheared off the plastic gear just my luck of course. Thanks so much for the info, was able to take it apart and order the correct part with your link. Made a bad day better thanks so much.
Absolutely the best `how-to' video I've seen. Perfect explanation throughout in both steady camera angles and words on every detail. of the repair. Thank you.
I removed the housing earlier and the drive gear was indeed worn out. Part ordered and will be here tomorrow. The only thing getting in the way now is that damn pin...I gave it a few good twhacks but it didn't want to budge. I'll give it a little more force tomorrow when push comes to shove 😅.Thank you for your super helpful video!
Dear Content Creator, Thank you for making this video. This morning, I tackled replacing the drive gear in my garage door opener for the first time. And because of this content, I was successful. In my professional life, I study environmental impacts of various products and processes. Generating waste from materials is a huge contributor to negative land transformations and pollutants going into our soil and waterways. Because of these types of videos, people can repair instead of replace saving money and environmental impacts. Thank you!
Great video. We had to adjust the travel on garage door. It was going too far. We didn't know anything about garage door openers. Very informative video, so helpful. Thank you so much, Barb from Pennsylvania.😊
My garage door open okay yesterday but it was making a clicking sound from the motor and today it only opened about one foot and then closed open one foot and then closed and I release the manual pull down rope handles and the door wouldn't open so I'm tending to believe it's a bad spring or I use lithium grease before on the cables on the hinges on the spring and everything else and then it was starting to make a strange sound after it shut off and it was almost completely down or up but I don't know if the detention on the spring has loosened up from the lithium grease or not I don't see any broken spring both cables are intact and have plenty of tension
Great video quality and instructions. After watching though, I can see why some would want to buy the entire kit to skip all the trouble of putting the gear on the shaft.
Great Video, Just had this problem last night, took the opener apart, the gear looked the same as yours! Ordered a new gear and will install it when it comes in. My opener is Belt driven and cracked, so I'll need to replace that also. Thanks
This exact problem started today on 1 of my 2- 40 year old openers, which is used much more than the other opener. Although I’m almost positive that this is the problem, I’m going to call in the company that installed the openers 40 years ago and let them fix it. But thanks for showing how it’s done.
well you made it look so easy my dad let me give it a try and I actually got the gear out without taking the motor down. Im just waiting patiently for the part. The garage guy said it would be 1200 dollars to put a new one, he said he is not allowed to fix it, he said he needed to get one with a battery. Thanks
I had just this very problem here in Scotland in the run up to Christmas - great 🤬! My lifter dates back to 1993, so was thinking I'd have to buy a whole new unit. Fortunately, I found your video and a spare parts kit, and managed to fix the problem within days. Great video - thank you so much!👍😊
Great video. Exactly what happened with my 23 year old Craftsman 1/2 hp garage door opener. I have the new gear on order ($10 on amazon). Will be back in business shortly. Video was excellent and extremely helpful. Part arrived today (Monday Jan 2)and installed easily. Piece of cake thanks to this video. $10 gear on Amazon. A penny saved…. Thanks again for the great video. Spot on.
Great video and excellent demonstration. Great, likeable person and very easy to follow his thoughts & procedures. Helped me check mine although it was the belt that worn out (21 yrs of use). Enjoyed your video and learned a lot. Many Thanks!
Great video! you saved me a ton of money. Thanks went very smoothly. also... the 65 people that disliked this video are probably all garage door repairmen!
tore mine apart and ordered the gear before i saw your video... what i did was removed a snap ring and slid the shaft out was easy since the gear was in pieces off shaft.
Thankful I found your video. Now I think I know the issue with my garage. I wish I knew I could do the repair myself but I’m not very good on repairing mechanical things. Hopefully it’s not too expensive.
I think mine just went. Haven’t taken cover off yet, just unplugged and been lifting door manually. The fix seems easy and now I will check it out. Thanks Shannon.
I've got a Lift-Chamber-Craft opener that also had plastic bits in its cover. Thanks for the details on R&Ring the drive gear and replacement ordering. Those look like just what I need to know.
Excellent. I'm too old to perform much of the work, but that alone is very valuable. Thanks for a great video! Will check out the links for parts, as I will delegate the rebuild process.
Please show video how you connected the support beam/long chain to the overhead door garage device and also show how you turn screw to adjust on the device so the garage door do not a have space above whe the door is completely down. This was a great video.
This video is great. The main challenge for me was getting the pin out so I could remove the gear because it was really stuck in there. I'd consider buying the piece with the gear mounted rather than just the gear itself.
I had seen I had the same problem before watching your video, but wasn't sure how big of a job it would be to change it. I pretty much had it figured out, but your video was excellent for a reference. My gear was $13.98, (which was gear plus shipping) from Amazon. Hey, at least you got a little grease with yours! There was none with mine. I'll go purchase some lithium grease, and fix it today. Thanks for your video, was very good and informative!!
I sub’d and ❤got what I needed from your video. I wouldn’t even have taken the motor down had I found your channel first. I made a wooden cradle to rest the shaft horizontal to drive the roll pin out to replace the gear and tapered one end of the roll pin slightly on my grinder for easier reinstall. The door opener was probably never adjusted properly because once it stopped raising up I realized the carrier was slamming against the stop bolt and sheared the gear collar almost completely off on one side. Much thanks ❤. I found my part at The ROP Shop on eBay for under $8 with free shipping.
My garage door barely opens. I need to physically assist at the beginning. Once it's assisted, 2/3rd on the way up it works fine. What do you think it is!? ❓️🤔
Unhook emergency release and try to open door by hand. It should lift pretty easy . If it does not then check for binding ( bad rollers or track alighnment) also could be broken spring or not enough tension on spring.
Thanks for the truly excellent video. It's important to check what type of gear one has. I have a very old Overhead Door opener that has a square hole in the center of the gear. Apparently some Genie doors also have it. They are on the same page on the link above. Just save some annoyance and check before ordering. I almost ordered the wrong one.
Mine went out about a year ago but before it quit working all the white nylon powder coated my garage in one corner. I thought I had some freaky spider setting up shop. Thanks for the vid!
My door will move, BUT it makes a bunch of noise and goes into reverse on the way down. Ordering the kit now. THANK YOU !!! (by the way, it's worth investigating your problem before just ordering the gear. My problem was in the tophat assembly being worn out, causing wobble in the sprocket. STILL under $20 for the whole kit though) UPDATE : I realized the cause of the messed up tophat assembly was the "up travel" adjustment was out of whack, allowing the trolley to hit the bolt stop every time it went up. Was probably not adjusted right at installation. Just an FYI....
What a fantastic and informative video and description, I really heartily appreciate your knowledge and skills, Thank you, thank you, The God bless you all the time
I had no idea that there was plastic gears inside. Mine is over 20 yrs old, and it has become louder - not sure what that could mean. Thanks Shannon!!!!
This video is all you need to diagnose and fix this problem. The gear cost me (internet) $2.50, a house call from the overhead door company is $99, plus parts ($40.00), and $99.00/hour labor play tax. I saved $250.00. THANKS!!!!!
My garage door would not open after I heard it slam. I will look into the opener and see the gear as in this video. I would not able to do it myself. Got an idea how much it may cost me for service. Many thanks for the information.
This is good to know in California. As of July 2019 garage door repair companies can't repair a nonbattery backup opener. So unless you want to spend $400-$500 to have someone replace an opener, repacing the part yourself is good information.
Tank’s for all good videos! I wonder, does grease small package should be apply on the bushing and shaft instead on the plastic gear? It Will explain why there is a so little.
I have a garage door opener with similar nylon gears. It is a very old unit, I have never replaced anything on the unit and the door opener gets used daily. Here is my secret to keeping it in like new condition year after year. I open the unit about once a year and generously apply nothing but a product called Vaseline. I use a q tip for an easy applicator. Also don't forget to apply special lube to the long tension spring over the doorway. If you don't lube this spring it will oxidize over time and break.
Excellent video I had the same exact problem. I replaced the whole gear assembly for about $20 it brought the door right back up but I must of messed up the timing of the chain bc it won’t go back down now it’s stuck in up positive the motor tries to run for a second but nothing moves?
Probably the best “how to” video I have ever watched. No annoying music. Great attention to detail and camera work. No nonsense. Just pure rational help. Thank you.
Shannon, your video and expertise just saved us $400.00 in hiring out this repair. Thank you so much. You are a gift.

Thanks for showing me how to replace gear. A million likes to you!
What size are the upper & lower cabinet screws? Thanks for the video
I had seen I had the same problem before watching your video, but wasn't sure how big of a job it would be to change it. When you removed the shaft and gear , you took it thru the round circle on top. How do you get it out if you leave unit attached to ceiling? Thanks!
If you dont have clearance you can lower your unit onto the top of another ladder or something.
Unhook emergency release and try to open door by hand. It should lift pretty easy . If it does not then check for binding ( bad rollers or track alighnment) also could be broken spring or not enough tension on spring.
Excellent video. Thank you Shannon!
Thank you so much. I will follow the instructions and going to change the coupling.
Great video. Excellent pace and clear instructions. Thanks for the help!
Mine went out about a year ago but before it quit working all the white nylon powder coated my garage in one corner. I thought I had some freaky spider setting up shop. Thanks for the vid!
I have this exact problem. Haven't tackled it yet but will be doing this in the coming weeks. Thanks Shannon
You got this!
Hey Shannon, I like that clamp storage idea. Great video, as usual.
Thanks!
Really good job sir! Thank you, I will now go out and try to duplicate your video and use your Amazon link.
STILL under $20 for the whole kit though)
UPDATE : I realized the cause of the messed up tophat assembly was the "up travel" adjustment was out of whack, allowing the trolley to hit the bolt stop every time it went up. Was probably not adjusted right at installation. Just an FYI....
You are the man! Point blank period! Thank you
What a fantastic and informative video and description, I really heartily appreciate your knowledge and skills, Thank you, thank you, The God bless you all the time
I had no idea that there was plastic gears inside. Mine is over 20 yrs old, and it has become louder - not sure what that could mean. Thanks Shannon!!!!
Shannon saves the day, AGAIN.
I am going to try this tomorrow. Thank you so much!
Amazing video. I have the same model opener, and the exact same problem. You just saved me a bunch of money. Beers on me if we ever cross paths!
First class DIY. Thank you.
Thanks! I'm sure this saved me a lot of money!
Excellent video! Thanks a bunch! My neighbor is 80 and his door does not work so I will use your info here and see if I can fix it for him!
Please do!
Super helpful, got my new gear today. Great step by step video 👍.
Helped me fix my garage door, was pretty easy. Thanks for the video…
Very professional clean easy ❤ thank you so much ❤❤❤❤❤
This video is all you need to diagnose and fix this problem. The gear cost me (internet) $2.50, a house call from the overhead door company is $99, plus parts ($40.00), and $99.00/hour labor play tax. I saved $250.00. THANKS!!!!!
Great step by step easy fix
Exactly what I needed during quarantine days, working on this today. Thanks !!
Perfect!
Great job!.. thanks for the information.. enjoy watching your videos!!!
My garage door would not open after I heard it slam. I will look into the opener and see the gear as in this video. I would not able to do it myself. Got an idea how much it may cost me for service. Many thanks for the information.
Sorry but it really can change form area to area. I would guess 100-200 $
Mine had a bad gear, but also the bushing the shaft rides in was VERY worn and the new bushing was needed (it comes in the "kit")
This is good to know in California. As of July 2019 garage door repair companies can't repair a nonbattery backup opener. So unless you want to spend $400-$500 to have someone replace an opener, repacing the part yourself is good information.
Interesting , I never knew there were battery back up openers? Thanks for commenting Maxid1!
Just put way more grease on the gear so it doesnt go out in a month
@@HouseImprovements they have several different kinds chain battery back up, belt battery backup and jackshaft battery backup
Thank for the info massive help. Any tips on adjusting my lens on the door.

Awesome video, thank you for the help. You have a gift for teaching
Wonderful and clear but how do you change the worm gear that came in my kit? Thanks.
There is a hex screw but opening that still does not give enough slack or play to get the worm screw out.
Ok, other videos show you have to drop the motor to change the worm gear. I will try going ahead leaving the old written gear on.
Tank’s for all good videos! I wonder, does grease small package should be apply on the bushing and shaft instead on the plastic gear? It Will explain why there is a so little.
No it is for the nylon gears.
Perfect thank you mines is doing that exactly same thing just order the part thank you 🙏🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I always enjoy your videos. Thank you sir!
This was great. Right to the point. And it worked after a little shot of wd40
Excellent video I had the same exact problem. I replaced the whole gear assembly for about $20 it brought the door right back up but I must of messed up the timing of the chain bc it won’t go back down now it’s stuck in up positive the motor tries to run for a second but nothing moves?
Try pulling the emergency release and lowering the door by hand then cycle the opener a couple times.
very good viedo, i think that my problem, but wonder how hard to remove without taking the unit down?
Its not bad to do hanging up , you just need to work off a ladder the whole time.
I'm nominating you for sainthood. You've saved my garage door opener, my sanity, and my marriage. Thank you so much!
Thanks, this is the best video in this topic.
