"The trash makes you appreciate (this) music more". Daniel...truer words were never said. Lol! I'm so glad this music is still here to enjoy, and for new generations (who are suffering with the trash) get to discover.
Holy shit....you’re sixteen???? I Honestly thought you were like 24 or so....college guy...professional musician! Just joined yesterday, so don’t know anything about you. Anyway...you’re a brilliant young man. I’m totally impressed. What do you want to devote your life to? Music? Or is music a hobby only? I was sixteen when The Beatles and The Stones hit...and in college when The Who And Zeppelin broke through. Thanks for doing such a good job with my generations music. I love your enthusiasm and appreciation of it.
I've always loved Supertramp for quirky, clever, thoughtful lyrics. It's another very deep well of great songs. You'll surely want to put the Logical Song and Goodbye Stranger on your list. "Breakfast in America" deserves a spot in anybody's album collection.
You are wise beyond your years. You *KNOW* at 16 you can't totally relate to the adult things but you have enough brain power and obvious upbringing to empathize fairly accurately. Keep up the good work my young friend.
That was a very honest thing to say, that you haven't yet had the life experiences to fully understand the song. Hey, I'm not sure I have and I'm, er, well, a fair bit older than 16! As you like looking at the meanings of lyrics, may I present to you Procul Harum, A Whiter Shade of Pale. That'll test you! And American Pie (Don McLean) is a kind of history of rock and roll, with references that most reactors don't get, so that might be worth a listen. And We Didn't Start the Fire by Billy Joel is a history of the world from Billy's birth to the year the album came out . . . with plenty of things I actually remember, showing just how old I really am . . . Really good reactions and choice of songs, a pleasure to watch.
I’ve always interpreted taking the long way home as avoiding an unsatisfying domestic situation more than taking time to enjoy life. But I could be wrong. Another great Supertramp song is Goodbye Stranger btw. A song that gives me very similar vibes is Duchess by Genesis. Anyone else get that sense?
As an active (well...before Covid!) musician these lyrics really hit home to me. I often "take the long way home" just to drive and get changes of scenery. Not wanting to get home again. The wife, dogs & cats! UGH! "If you'd had more time..." A very upbeat song but rather sad. But I can identify.
Sometimes a song or a group has such a huge radio presence, hearing them over and over, that you really don't appreciate how deep they are. Supertramp, I believe, slipped into this trap for me.
Beautiful reaction Daniel!!! Supertramp was one of the greatest bands of the 70's. Now, you must listen to The Logical Song, Give A Little Bit, and the title track to their album Breakfast In America. Thank you for your amazing reactions✌❤🎶
I interpreted it as talking to someone who has strayed from reality a bit believing an adoring crowd love them - playing to the gallery instead of caring about their friends and loved ones right in front of them. They can't see they are neglecting their wife, and the advice is to take some time out to think before they lose out. Your insight was, as always, refreshing and insightful. Well done for a very knowledgeable analysis.
Don't worry we are used to your reactions going long. It is a part of the channels charm. Keep up the great work. So many paths and rabbit holes to follow on your journey. Supertramp can be a deep one, as others have stated, they have many great flavors/evolutions... Not all appeal to the masses, but I think you will find them ear candy and lyrically enlightening. They certainly have their place in rock, but those who understand that beyond the pop hits are getting fewer and fewer.
Love Supertramp. Back in 1988 I was driving back home from Montreal, Canada when a radio station out of Montreal played this entire Supertramp album. It made the Long Way Home drive a lot of fun.
Roger Hodgson, the writer and singer of this song, left the band not long after this album to spend more time with his young family. Their album from 3 or 4 years earlier, Crime of the Century, was their masterpiece, you may want to listen to that starting with the song School
Breakfast in America is such a great album. It’s in my top 100 all time and that’s saying a lot. You can always count on great songwriting and production with Supertramp. Goodbye Stranger is the best on that album IMO, great lyrics and one of the best outros you’ll ever hear
Not my favorite of their albums but certainly their most successful one. The album cover art is fantastic especially once you figure out what it actually is. No spoilers for Daniel, please! I do agree with you about the outro for Goodbye Stranger. It's next level.
One of deepest Best songs ever written....by Supertramp. I Love this group!!!! Very Talented!!!! One of the gods of Rock n' Roll.....check out their, "Bloody Well Right." I think you will like it.
You are very perceptive for a 16year old. So good to see you appreciating the wonderful music from my youth . We were a lucky generation to have had nearly 30 years of awesome music . Never to be repeated . Supertramp were part of this. The whole album Breakfast in America is superb. Well done
So many great songs on that album Breakfast in America! A great rabbit hole to get into!! U won't be disappointed. I graduated in 79 and loved this album and always will 💜🤷♀️
"Give a little bit" is another song you need to check out. Its was probably their most popular song, so you may have heard it. It also a great song to practice if you are guitar player.
Another British band with powerhouse songwriters, who eventually split because of ego's! Saw them 3x back then, huge talents! Crime Of the Century is the album that you should go to next although they are all good! Peace have a great day.
The albums " Crime of the Century", " Crisis What Crisis ", " Even in the Quietest Moments ", Breakfast in America"--- all masterpieces. The Albums " Famous Last Words" & " Brother Where You Bound"---very good. You will enjoy 95%(or more) of the songs from these albums. The live album "Paris" is spectacular
Got a recommendation for you. The band is called "Procul Harem". They were on tour once and were passing through Edmonton and hooked up with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra for a night and after one practice session, recorded an album. Check out the song "Conquistador". You won't be disappointed.
It seems to me the song is about the dichotomy of public life of adoration and regular everyday mundane home life. and the struggle to transition between the two. Take the long way home to prepare yourself for the landing. Take some time to reflect and understand . Daniel, in regard to something you said I will leave this with you; It is a good thing I did not get what I wanted when I wanted it because if I had I would not have what I have today. Which is what I would have wanted in the first place had I known about it at the time!
Nice react! Love this band. Many great songs and very talented musicians. The live album Paris is amazing. The best songs with a great sound quality Please react to "The Logical Song"
Their most successful album to be honest. I believe their best album which was more of a concept album was Crime of The Century. Production is so detailed and clear. Great melodies and lyrics. Especially School and Rudy. Well worth checking out. Good review you gave😁👍
For me (49, and listening to Supertramp since I was around 5), these lyrics mean the long journey we all take through life into our inner selves, to finally find peace and wisdom (or not). And this takes time, but don’t worry... since you’re listening to Supertramp , you’re on the right path😉
This is pretty straight forward in it's meaning, his life sucks, so he "takes the long way home" to delay arriving home with all of it's drudgery and misery. Next song should be "Goodbye Stranger." I consider Supertramp to be second only to Steely Dan for production values and song orchestration
So glad you enjoyed this band, they're fantastic. That entire album is terrific. I burned that cassette tape out over the summer of 81 when I discovered them in junior high
Good song, their best material is from Crime of the Century, Crisis What Crisis and Even In The Quietist Moments. As good as material from Breakfast In America was, it was a little too commercial. Great reaction and dissection.
Another vote for Crisis What Crisis. I am lucky enough to have loved Supertramp from the beginning in my teens. Their album Live in Paris was played to death in 1980. Breakfast in America was, as already noted, a little too pop for my taste.
Genius Song, the best song during my Senior year in college. For me ALWAYS a rating of S for Superior! When a person is in their last year of college just about to graduate it makes many of us wonder are we really ready for what's about to come.
This album was part of the soundtrack to my Junior year of high school and the Summer of ‘79. FM rock radio played the heck out of it and deservedly so. Top tier album.
Thank you for sharing this young man! I really appreciate it, coming from a man who was about, I think 7 years old when I heard that song living in Ohio. I really liked your review on this. This song brings out a lot of emotions. God bless you!
Daniel, the more you delve into Supertramp, the more you'll come to love them as you do Steely Dan. Although different, they are similar in great musicianship and songwriting(lyrics) and every song delivers something special. They have a few excellent albums including Crime of the Century(1974), Crisis ? What Crisis ? (1975), Even in the Quietest Moments....(1977), and their epic Breakfast in America(1979) with 4 top US singles (The Logical Song has to be done sooner or later, even though it's very popular and commercial, number 6 on US charts BUT the lyrics are great) In regard to Steely Dan, Breakfast in America is Supertramp's Aja The long way home also refers to taking your time on your way home after a night of drinking (or partying - 70's term) so you can sober up or straighten out before having to face your wife or parents. PS I left a comment on your reaction to Baker Street (which I liked) below that video and didn't realize that it wasn't your site till later, don't know if you'll read them.
16?!? A Baby ~ LOL ~ Just jam out to the music ~ Groove ~ Don't overthink it ~ Hope you stay in the game ~ Love, Success, & Happiness to you young man ~ Love Itia ~ P.S. I subscribed so I'll be looking for you ~ And listen to this song again when alone ~ Lay Back & Chill ~! P.S. Your analysis for a 16 year old was intelligent ~ But while the lyrics "teach" you, allow the music to take you out of yourself, out of your head and into your soul ~ And then the song, music will forever be a part of you ~ Also for me, after work, I take the long way home, play my tunes, and come down, my relaxing play time after A Hard Day's ( Night ~ Beatle Song ) work ~ Play as hard as you work, that's my analytical advice to you ~;-)
Supertramp was really a popular and iconic group in the 70s , also check out by Supertramp = Good Bye Stranger ( 1979 ) The Logical Song ( 1979 ) and Even in the quietest moments ( 1977/1978 ) . CHEERS BRO ...
This song is about how when you are a rock star your life is such a thrill and people think you are a god, yet when you get back home, you are just a normal person, all the glitter has left and you feel a certain sense of rejection your neighbors tell jokes about the crazy way you dress and look when you are on stage. Home and family are your anchors but you still feel like you prefer to be the god like, super star so if you are going home, take the long way home. Supertramp is such a skillful and musical group. I miss them not producing anymore music as a band. Roger Hodgson is an amazing musician. Great reaction choice. Nice to see you appreciating music that had real musicians and music that moved your soul.
Excellent Daniel, Love you wanting to explore this sacred music.. You are a "Child of Vision"" which just happens to be my favorite Supertramp song.. A reaction to that would be slick, when and if you get a chance. That or "Babaji" I'm sure you'd love. Keep up the great discoveries (: Tim
*wonders whether the 2020s will have any good music. I might have thought that. But there has been a surprisingly large amount of musos posting from home studios during COVID.This music has pushed my nostalgia buttons. For a start it isn't over produced. It's stripped of all the clever stuff and fripperies and the artists seem connected to their audience again. (Maybe with no gigs a desperation for audience is also showing.)
Most of Supertramps "solos" come from horns (saxophones and such) rather than guitars, with a lot of rhythm from pianos.... but they do work in some guitar as well.
I think this song is about the reasons both direct and indirect why you would take the long way home. Not too see your wife too soon or avoid getting harassed as a youngster, etc. This is from a great album called Breakfast in America. Also check into the interesting infighting within the band between the main song writers Roger Hodgson and Rick Davies. Lots of other great material from earlier as well. They were build as a Super band I was told.
I love your personal interpretations. It may not be what the writer was thinking when the song was created, but music like poetry is personal to every individual. Sad songs can make you happy. Funny songs can make you cry. What makes your channel interesting is how you interpret and react to the music. Keep it up!
Breakfast In America is a great album. I wasn’t much older than you when I was in our school radio station. It was springtime and got this in the mail. I cracked this open, put it on the turntable and only took it off to turn it to side 2! EVERY SONG hit me so hard, I couldn’t help but to be an instant SUPERTRAMP fan! Just subscribed, love your show!!!
I’m glad you enjoyed this as much as I had hoped, and while this is a great song, it’s not what I would have suggested as a start for Supertramp. There’s not a bad track on this album, and it spawned several hits. A good one for you to do off this album would be Goodbye Stranger, but I would really suggest you go back to the Crime of the Century album and listen to School , Rudy or Dreamer.
Obviously he should do Goodbye Stranger, the Logical Song, Crime of the Century, and some others already mentioned here. But am I the only one who really likes Hide in Your Shell? Not saying it's my absolute favorite Supertramp song but I really like it and no one ever seems to mention it on reactions.
You mean - The "trash" music makes you appreciate "real" music more. Of course, it is a perspective on what constitutes trash but no one can deny that real music shines through the ages.
This song is about a mans life after marriage, when daily life becomes routine and monotonous and you become taken for granted. Take the long way home because you don't want to be home.
So glad you did this song, one of my all-time favorites... yes, it is sad but it is true so that can be uplifting... kinda how the blues can make you happy... IDK... I will catch up on this weeks output, you've been very prolific this week... I'm traveling for work so I am behind, keep it up!
The Logical Song is the next Logical choice for a Supertramp song.
Yes! I told Daniel that it's very Rush and Yes-like.
Yes need this one!
most definitely. and then Goodbye Stanger
Oh yes! The Logical Song is great!
Agreed!
That whole album is a necessity in any record collection. Beautifully produced, written, played. It endures.
You are way above any person I know who's 16. Keep it up. Great work.
"The trash makes you appreciate (this) music more". Daniel...truer words were never said. Lol! I'm so glad this music is still here to enjoy, and for new generations (who are suffering with the trash) get to discover.
Logical Song!!
The Logical Song, Goodbye Stranger!
Holy shit....you’re sixteen???? I Honestly thought you were like 24 or so....college guy...professional musician! Just joined yesterday, so don’t know anything about you. I love your enthusiasm and appreciation of it.
this blew me away as well, watched a lot of his videos, comes across as so mature. but you know, some people are gifted.
When you said the wife thinks your part of the furniture, you had me hooked forever.. You rock-on, kid!!!!!
I've always loved Supertramp for quirky, clever, thoughtful lyrics.
It's another very deep well of great songs. You'll surely want to put the Logical Song and Goodbye Stranger on your list.
"Breakfast in America" deserves a spot in anybody's album collection.
"Goodbye Stranger" "The Logical Song" "Breakfast in America" My friend tours (toured before the pandemic) with Roger.
You are wise beyond your years. You *KNOW* at 16 you can't totally relate to the adult things but you have enough brain power and obvious upbringing to empathize fairly accurately. Keep up the good work my young friend.

Really good reactions and choice of songs, a pleasure to watch.
"The trash certainly makes you appreciate music more." What a great metaphor about life itself too.
Breakfast in America is my favorite Supertramp song but that whole Breakfast in America album is great.
You’re wise beyond your years! Keep on your path
I always loved Supertramp. Such a unique sound.
GOOD JOB! I especially like "You have exactly the same amount of time as Einstein." (Or do we? - I guess it depends on how fast you travel.)
"Dreamer", "Goodbye Stranger", and "Bloody Well Right" are three favs from Supertramp. They've got a decent pile of hits and deep cuts.
Need hear dreamer again it's been too long
Morning Video for me :)
One of my favorite songs ever
Super Tramp is very Satisfying to listen to.
The writer/lyricist is saying TO take the long way home. Smell the roses before you run out of time.
You may not be middle aged but make no mistake you are an old soul . One cannot appreciate the mountain if haven't spent time in a valley ✌️♥️
I tend to agree with this assessment.
"Give A Little Bit" is my favorite song of theirs and the lyrics couldn't be more appropriate than today as far as a message we all should heed.
An optimist says, "This is the best of all possible worlds". The pessimist sighs before saying "Yeah, You're right".
Breakfast in America...whole album is brilliant....was when I was growing up...still is...peace
Great reaction, Goodbye Stranger, Logical Song, Give A Little Bit and so many more. You just never get sick of these songs, played today on the radio.
Thanks for your reaction and I'm looking forward to your other Supertramp songs/albums reactions. cheers!
Love Supertramp. Back in 1988 I was driving back home from Montreal, Canada when a radio station out of Montreal played this entire Supertramp album. It made the Long Way Home drive a lot of fun.

Crime of the Century is my favorite Supertramp album. It's another one of those albums that's best to start with the first track and proceed in order.
Wayne Pruner He would definitely appreciate that one more!
I graduated in 79 and loved this album and always will 💜🤷♀️
Same year i joined the air force ..damm i'm gettin' old.
Ha ha! Me too! 🤦♀️🙂😃
"Give a little bit" is another song you need to check out. Its was probably their most popular song, so you may have heard it. It also a great song to practice if you are guitar player.
You're 16??!! I would never have quessed. I thought you were Much older. This 63 year old soul is surprised and intrigued.
Supertramp handled the transition from "prog-pop" to "mainstream pop" fairly well. This is from the "boaderline-album" you could say 😊.
Everyone has the same amount of time unless health shortens that time. You are a very intelligent young man, your parents must be proud.
I love it when a song starts with a mouth organ The Beatles and The Smiths to name a couple of others
Another British band with powerhouse songwriters, who eventually split because of ego's! Saw them 3x back then, huge talents! Crime Of the Century is the album that you should go to next although they are all good! Peace have a great day.
This song was on the radio so so so much when it came out!! OH the music that was so normal for us back then !! We had NO IDEA JUST what we had!! 💜🥰
Glad you enjoyed the song! Supertramp has many great tunes and your interpretation was very thoughtful as always.
Got a recommendation for you. The band is called "Procul Harem". They were on tour once and were passing through Edmonton and hooked up with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra for a night and after one practice session, recorded an album.
Check out the song "Conquistador". You won't be disappointed.
"In Held Twas I" was even better. And the spelling is Procol Harum. I saw them with Dave Mason and Renaissance in 1975...amazing concert!
“Whiter Shade Of Pale” is a must also.
Love "Even in the Quietest Moments" and "From Now On."
bet he'd like It's Raining Again...
You are pretty much spot on in your interpretation of the lyric to this piece.
Thank you!
🔥🤘😎💯💕👏👏
Nice react!
Love this band. Many great songs and very talented musicians.
The live album Paris is amazing. The best songs with a great sound quality
Please react to "The Logical Song"
I met the band members of Supertramp at their post gig party at the Adelphi Hotel in Liverpool. They were lovely. 💖
:) Hmmm... I prefer your interpretation, Daniel, so that's how I'll 'listen' to it from now on!
:) It has a much better feel that way.
Super Trump! The logical song, bloody well right, school, and dreamer are essential as well!
Your insights into this song are remarkable.
love love love this song
This is pretty straight forward in it's meaning, his life sucks, so he "takes the long way home" to delay arriving home with all of it's drudgery and misery.
Next song should be "Goodbye Stranger."
I consider Supertramp to be second only to Steely Dan for production values and song orchestration
Breakfast in America is one of the greatest albums. Secret: there is a short gem that few hear, It's called "Lord, Is it Mine?"
Yes. That right there. My favorite song on that album.
I wish I too had never heard a single Supertramp song so I could start all over again.
Love Supertramp they're great 👍 I love most of what they do.♥️
"Goodbye Stranger" three times for completion. That's how good this song is! Especially the end!
One of my favorites by Supertramp. ...especially Love the lyrics
So glad you enjoyed this band, they're fantastic. That entire album is terrific. I burned that cassette tape out over the summer of 81 when I discovered them in junior high
Good intro to one of the monster hits of the late 70's. Album had 4 or 5 top 10 hits.
Dreamer,Logical song,Breafast in America,Long way home& goodbye stranger
Every decade has its trash. Time is a good filter. The good stuff lasts.
another fantastic band!! Supertramp is a Hugh rabbit hole, enjoy!!!👍👌✌😎
Genius Song, the best song during my Senior year in college. For me ALWAYS a rating of S for Superior! When a person is in their last year of college just about to graduate it makes many of us wonder are we really ready for what's about to come.
Breakfast in America is my favorite album 2nd only to ELO out of the blue.
Always loved supertramp since i was young
I agree with your interpretation.
This album was part of the soundtrack to my Junior year of high school and the Summer of ‘79. FM rock radio played the heck out of it and deservedly so. Top tier album.
Another great song on that album is "Lord is it mine?" But great album altogether. Breakfast in America.
Daniel is going to love The Breakfast in America album cover.
Lord Is It Mine is one of their finest.
Thank you for sharing this young man! I really appreciate it, coming from a man who was about, I think 7 years old when I heard that song living in Ohio. I really liked your review on this. This song brings out a lot of emotions. God bless you!

On the interview? I think I did read them, but I'll check back to be sure I didn't miss yours:)
The song Breakfast in America actually has a clarinet solo and has some sax and trombone! It’s a cool song you might check out 😊
I was in my teens when this song came out! It was one of those songs that gets in your head and just stays there! A classic and one of my favorites 💜
...adding your channel for this reaction, enjoy your beyond-your-years perception; its refreshing in this day.
16?!? A Baby ~ LOL ~ Just jam out to the music ~ Groove ~ Don't overthink it ~ Hope you stay in the game ~ Love, Success, & Happiness to you young man ~ Love Itia ~ P.S. Your bloody well right
Supertramp was really a popular and iconic group in the 70s , also check out by Supertramp = Good Bye Stranger ( 1979 ) The Logical Song ( 1979 ) and Even in the quietest moments ( 1977/1978 ) . CHEERS BRO ...

I love it, “Hide in your Shell” that is - along with Rudy, (from same album).
One’s fears may be projected onto others. There’s no guarantee that you’ll become part of the furniture, so long as you engage with your partner.
