    Book description:
Adam has spent the last couple of years focusing on himself, trying to get his life and career in order. Now, entering his thirties, he’s painfully alone, struggling to meet and date anyone.
After a series of unusual encounters with a woman whom Adam feels an attraction to unlike anyone he has before, he begins to experience strange problems, and he finds himself in deeply unsettling situations. Adam must discover what it means to love and be loved, and what he's willing to endure and sacrifice to truly be with someone.
"The Closer We Get" combines a timeless exploration of the intricacies and struggles of relationships with the backdrop of an increasingly surreal and mind-bending near-future world.

It’s much less complicated to be *single*. You can still have friends, acquaintances, be in tune with the world around you, etc. I’ve played the dating game enough for one lifetime. If you can say you are content with who you are and what you have, you win life.

Why cant you be content with who you are and date as well? If you want to be single, be single, but if you want to be single because its less complicated, thats probably a fools errand. The same skills that you use to be content with your life and yourself now, can be used when you're not single

@AlacrityJones why are you second guessing a person's personal decision just because it's not a decision you would make? They're not going to write a 300 page thesis examining the ins & outs, this is the abridged version, accept it.
Being in a couple is a fool's errand if you ask many people including me. It's not for everyone, & the sooner society accepts that & stops trying to ram their ideals down everyone's throats, the better. Happily singles do not need to be persuaded to give up everything they've decided they prefer in life just because the majority doesn't "get it"

bro be honest you just can't get a girlfriend. yeah, life is simpler when you're single. it's also fucking lonely and depressing. I don't care how many friends you have or extracurriculars you do, life is just better when you're in love. Every single person has times when they think they'd rather stay single forever, then they find someone they enjoy, and they realize that they were missing out on everything life is about. @@aussiejubes

Ironic how im only now at 21 jumping into my dating life for the first time. Its scary man! Getting ghosted or not liked because u don't have enough going on or your being yourself kinda sucks. Obviously u can't change someones attraction towards you or not, u have to accept that, but it does hurt sometimes because its like damn. I guess i wasn't enough

    • @Yosetime

It will be much less scary if you stop worrying that when someone rejects you, it's because you aren't good enough as a person. The reality is that it's not always about you. There's a thousand reasons someone may say no to you, and the other way around too. Yes, it does hurt, it always hurts no matter how old you are and how many times it happens. But don't worry about it. It's a normal part of life that comes and goes. But when you do fall in love, you will totally forget about the scary part! And you will indeed eventually fall in love. And even if it doesn't last, and your first one or two or so probably won't, know that whatever happens, you're gonna be ok. You do you, don't accept second best, and know you will be enough for someone! Probably a few someone's. Good luck!

I've been thinking about this for a long time as well; about how difficult for me to love and accept being loved. I always feel repulsed by 'bonding' even with my family and friends. I could not even say "I love you" to my parents. Romance is out of the question. I'm 21 now and I have no experience in romantic relationships. I don't know how to love or respond to being loved. I see this as a problem because it inhibits my experience of life due to the emotional detachment and indifference towards others. As of for now, I'd like to try being in a relationship to know more about this side of me and try to overcome my shortcomings so that I can become whole. That is why I'm excited for this book because of how relatable it is.

As someone who is married and has dated extensively in my lifetime, I can offer you some advice. It's your choice to follow it or not. But you should be 100% honest with anyone whom you are thinking of getting into your first relationship with. Tell them of your inexperience and of your possible inability to love them in the way that they want or need to be loved. And make sure to emphasize that if it turns out that you aren't able to feel those deep feelings for them, that it isn't their fault or a reflection of them and whether they are loveable or not. It's something within you that you are trying to overcome and you want to be upfront with them from the start to avoid them being let down or hurt if it doesn't work out.

@@shadowmoses6843 The fact that it makes you emotional to consider their feelings is a good indicator that you have the necessary capacity to love someone when the right one comes along. If you warn them and they choose to take the risk then that is their decision and they have to weigh the risk to reward ratio. Just do your best to be honest and compassionate in all relationships and you will have nothing to feel guilty about in the end. I've learned the hard way that if you act like an asshole to people and are careless with their feelings then it usually comes back to bite you in the ass somehow. Maybe not immediately, but somewhere down the road when you least expect it and when you really don't want it to happen.

I didnt even read your full comment yet, but it automatically made me think of myself. I could never say I love you to my parents. Probably because they never said it back, but I think that they still did love me though. Bonding was also hard for me. Until I met someone at 22 years old, I also had no romantic experience because I was alwasys awkward and never had good social skills. It changed for me though and I meant someone as awkward as me and that actually accepted me for who I am. It was a work friend so it can happen even though I thought it couldnt. Keep your head up and you can find the one man even if you think its hopeless.

The work-around here is to not look for someone to love you, but rather someone who will tolerate you. I prefer someone who is willing to walk away from an argument and knowing with 100% certainty that they will come back and be totally fine even if there is no resolution to the argument (caveat that I would probably settle for 90% certainty if I it came down to it. lol). Really, arguments are generally just a way to blow off steam. Most people don't remember what started the argument anyway. If you can find someone to just agree to disagree and be totally ok, that's a keeper.

Love is beautiful it is the guiding light out of the absurd. It is the sublime horizon. If you only believe in it when you have it it you will never truly know it. Faith is the word for the place between loves. Some love lasts a lifetime some does not. I see so many people trying to pin it down as one thing it isn’t. It’s everything. "The story keeps going until it doesn't."
Call me a cynic, but this is why I've always considered the Romance and love story genre to be BS. In the best case scenario it's simply a couple overcoming a few obstacles and getting together at the height of the honeymoon period at the very beginning of a relationship. That's the ending of a typical "happily ever after" romance story. Rarely do they show us the true bulk of relationship, i.e. what happens later and how it ends. Nobody seems to want to talk or think about it since I guess they'd deem it "unromantic", but it's the truth. Romance isn't meant to last. It doesn't make it meaningless per se, but reality is quite different than the 'happily ever after' nonsense that the genre promotes to kids and adults alike. The infatuation phase isn't meant to last the entire span of a relationship. It's only a small part. Unhealthy expectations do not make for a healthy mindset. It's better to accept that romance is fleeting at best, or false and/or non-existent at worst. Keep it real.
