The low fat community gloated over the rumor that Atkins died of a heart attack, and it wasn't even true. Atkins died of brain damage from a fall on the ice. I don't think Mike needs to feel bad referring to the heart problem he observed for the conference leader.

In 2001, Atkins's coronary arteries were 30 to 40 percent blocked, according to Patrick Fratellone, his cardiologist and employee.[9]
In 2002, Atkins went into cardiac arrest, leading many of his critics to point to this episode as proof of the inherent dangers in the consumption of high levels of saturated fat associated with the Atkins diet. In numerous interviews, however, Atkins stated that his cardiac arrest was not the result of poor diet, but was rather caused by a chronic infection.[10][11][12]
On April 7, 2003, Atkins was admitted to Weill Cornell Medical Center, where he underwent surgery to remove a blood clot from his brain, but fell into a coma. He died on April 17, at age 72.[13][14][4]
After his death, his widow stated that Atkins's coronary-artery disease had progressed in the final years of his life with a new blockage, a procedure to remedy the blockage, and that he was taking heart-rhythm medication.[9]
A report from the New York medical examiner's office leaked a year after his death said that Atkins had a history of heart attack, congestive heart failure and hypertension, and that at the time of his death he weighed 258 pounds (117 kg).[13] According to Stuart Trager, chairman of the Atkins Physicians Council (a group of physicians who work as consultants to the Atkins organization), this report contained incomplete medical records and Atkins did not have a history of heart attacks; instead, according to Trager, Atkins had cardiomyopathy, a heart muscle disease that was probably caused by a virus, not his diet.[15] His widow refused to allow an autopsy.[15]

I just released an interview today with someone vegan since 1989. I have plenty longer than that next. But, these, like you, are anecdotes, n of 1, meaningless really. Except one critical thing, the people I interview are reflective of the totality of evidence. Which is why there are so many longtime and lifelong and multigenerational vegans. But, vegan is a philosophy, not a diet. What these real vegans have in common is common sense about what a well planned vegan diet is comprised of; legumes, greens, grains, fruits, veggies, mushrooms, nuts, seeds, herbs & spices and a variety of each. A simple implementation of this is the most healthy, ethical, affordable, sustainable, and sane way of eating. And those doing it thrive unlike anyone else I've ever experienced in all my travels.

Key to changing reality is the data you base it on. Once you learn that (healthy) saturated fats (grass fed beef, salmon, ...) provide ideal fuel for mitochondria (and especially when you combine it the recycling effects of autophagy by using stored fat) and how damaging refined foods (sugars, flours, oils, ... ) are, it changed your feelings about them.

Farmed salmon should be avoided at all costs. Probably most toxic food on earth. Eat small sea fish e.g. mackerel (toxins accumulate in large fish). Imo the real ecological crisis is that the seas are so toxic the poisons are building up in fish.

This research is eye opening, I also read the research, clearly there is almost no difference in cardiovascular health benefit by cutting the saturated fats but when you read the commentary of the article written by the authors they claim reducing the saturated fats will be beneficial.
This is why you always need to read the research data and tables yourself and ignore what the author comments.
Out of 8 categories they checked (all cause mortality, cardiovascular event, stroke, chd event, chd mortality, myocardial infarctions, Non-Fatal MI, combined cardiovascular events) there is almost zero difference happens by reducing saturated fat, but they only saw in one of them some reduction with not clear evidence and std deviation is very high.
Even though the data is absolutely clearly showing that this intervention is completely unnecessary, they still commented people to reduce their saturated fat and eat more plant foods and seed oils.
This is why you should be extremely careful with these “scientists”, if their own research does not support their belief system, they’ll still find a way to communicate the other way

As i just commented, we know that eating carbs shrinks and multiply LDL particles. The smaller the LDL particles , the more prone to get caught in a bruised arthery they are. And being more numerous, while having a lower volume, accelerate the process.
So, saturated fat doesn't CAUSE the attack, inflammation does, but once the artheries are damaged, having all those small ldl in the blood stream makes it for fast atherosclerosis formation.
So reducing saturated fat, lowers the LDL particles count, slowing down the process.
I think a better way do deal with that issue, would be to go ketogenic, or even better carnivore, and have lower amount of larger ldl particles that don't get caught in the damaged tissues! Even if the total volume of LDL comes up, if the particles count goes down, i think it should help, if not prevent atherosclerosis as a whole...
So the study was led on carb eaters, that's why!

Hey, Mike, help me out here. If dietary SATURATED FAT does not contribute to, NOR cause, atherosclerosis in primary prevention of heart disease, how in the world would that same SATURATED FAT all of a sudden become a contributing or causative factor in secondary prevention. Either SATURATED FAT triggers/accelerates the atherosclerotic process or it DOESN'T. As you alluded to, this study seems a little shaky, with considerable low grade evidence.

ASCVD is an area under the curve problem. When you’re accumulating endothelial damage your whole life, 2 years of reduced damage is obviously going to have little effect.
And what you aren’t saying here is that we know saturated fats raise APOb, and we know APOb as atherogenic. Also, some people are genetically disposed to higher cholesterol levels, some to lower levels. So the impact of saturated fats is inherently variable.

    Here's a ChatGPT summary:
    - A recent systematic review indicates no correlation between saturated fat consumption and cardiovascular disease risk or mortality.
    - The review analyzed randomized controlled trials with a minimum duration of 24 months.
    - Health authorities often recommend saturated fat intake be no more than 7% of total energy intake.
    - The review suggests reducing saturated fat has little or no effect on all-cause or cardiovascular mortality but may reduce cardiovascular events by 21%.
    - Evidence suggests reducing saturated fat might help prevent a second cardiovascular event in individuals who have already experienced one.
    - The president of the American Heart Association, an advocate for low-fat diets, suffered a heart attack, raising questions about the effectiveness of such diets.
    - Systematic reviews show no correlation between saturated fat manipulation and total mortality.
    - Secondary outcomes indicate that reducing saturated fat may help prevent future heart attacks in those who have already had one.
    - The review found no clear effects on all-cause or cardiovascular mortality but a 21% reduction in combined cardiovascular events, mostly from secondary prevention.
    - Replacing saturated fat with processed carbs and junk food does not confer health benefits.
    - The history of the correlation between saturated fat and heart disease dates back to the 1950s, coinciding with the rise of Crisco and sugar.
    - The focus should be on minimizing sugar, processed foods, and industrial seed oils rather than saturated fat.
    - The review encourages sharing its findings with health professionals who advocate for the removal of saturated fat from diets.
    - Main message: The systematic review suggests that reducing saturated fat intake has little impact on all-cause or cardiovascular mortality and that the focus should shift from saturated fat to reducing sugar, processed foods, and industrial seed oils for better health outcomes.

I don’t know why you would lower it if you had a heart attack?

    • @kevintappminville195
      @kevintappminville195 2 місяці тому +1

Regarding secondary cardiac events: patients who experience heart attack or stroke often embark on a multi-facetted health improvement plan, including losing weight and eating more whole foods. It does not sound like this review addresses additional behavior modification variables. Therefore, the evidence of fat-intake-reduction having in impact on secondary cardiac events may simply indicate that patients who actually try to improve their health after an initial cardiac event have better outcomes than patients who do nothing.

The large issue is poly unsaturated fats high in Omega 6 and low in 3, such as rapeseed(Canola) and sunflower oils. Olive oil is good and coconut oil is fine, butters fine ECT... Animal fat fine... Along with the seed oils, high intake of sugars, particularly highly processed easy to digest ones with no fiber. Fiber and protein are key to kerbing cravings and reducing the spike in blood sugar from carbohydrates. Eat veggies and meat, avoid processed food too often, job done.

I have a theory on why reducing saturated fat could help prevent a secondary event.
When you eat carbs, the LDL particle count goes up, and their volume goes down. Those very small LDL are what get caught in the damaged artheries.
But it's inflammation that cause damage. Safe to say that a hearth attack probably cause lots of damage, and and then create a perfect spot for those tiny LDL particles to get lodged.
On a keto dietz the LDL particles are fewer and large and those don't get caught in damaged tissue.
So my guess for why does reducing staruated fat reduce risks of a second episode is that the study was led on carbohydrates eater...
I blame the carbs and processed food!

Yeah, when you go from 5% of calories from saturated fat to 12%, there is not much increase in heart disease risk. If you go from 40% to 60%, again not much increase. It’s going from 12% to 20% where you increase risk. You can easily put together analysis to make it APPEAR to not increase risk. Dig a little deeper and see a different story.

Saturated fats lower LPa and sdLDL actual harmful markers. If you lower saturated fats or replace them with unsaturated fats or carbohydrates LPa and sdLDL goes up, even if you change to oil olive or the so called healthy carbohydrates, these markers increase, you can lower your total cholesterol by about 6-8% by reducing saturated fats but increase your LPa and sdLDL by about 30-40%

I have never understood the reasoning behind separating "primary" and "secondary" when it comes to heart disease. The only difference between these two populations is that one of them demonstrably HAS existing heart disease as determined by having an MI, while the other does not (no MI). But thus distinction is extremely clumsy. The non-MI person may well have atherosclerosis almost as significant as that of the person who gas had an MI. What we SHOULD be focusing on is how human beings with existing atherosclerosis, which is probably almost everyone over 40, can heal from it. Doesn't matter if they have had an MI or not, so whether the healing is "primary" or "secondary" should not change the approach one iota. It's thus kind of wrong-track thinking that inhibits the medical community from developing solid working models of heart disease. It just overcomplicates the issue. Lets learn how to HEAL the hunsn body from atherosclerosis and apply that to everyone.

As i just commented, we know that eating carbs shrinks and multiply LDL particles. The smaller the LDL particles , the more prone to get caught in a bruised arthery they are. And being more numerous, while having a lower volume, accelerate the process.

So the study was led on carb eaters, those whitout existing hearth disease are less at risk of having the LDL form into atherosclerosis, where those who DID suffer a hearth attack, have a lot of centers where the atherosclerosis can form. So for someone who never had a hearth attack, fat isn't as dangerous as it is for someone who had one!

Carbs raise insuline, insuline is the storage hormones.
In ketosis, the insuline is too low to trigger the storing mechanism, and even better, you burn ketones, which are synthesised from fat, and the ketones you don't burn just evaporate.
