- Hi, I’m Clare, Welcome to The Farmyard Garden.
I garden at home on our farm in Staffordshire, UK. (Zone 8a/b I believe). My vegetable garden comprises of a 250 sq metre formal home allotment style plot, which is my kitchen garden, plus additional vegetable growing areas and a previously neglected home garden.
I have a 20 x 12ft polytunnel from First Tunnels and two 8x6 ft greenhouses.
In this episode, filmed yesterday (May 3rd), i make the brave decusion to put all of my peopers and chillies (capsicum) outside and agonise over whether I dare kick the aubergines out too. I also give you a tomato plant update.
I plant out some dahlias and beetroot and erect steel cloche hoops and environmest to protect from beet leaf miner. The big exodus for summer 2024 growing season begins!

I will NOT be starting peppers off quite so early next year. Don’t think it was necessary. They started getting shoved out a bit too early really, such was the lack of space when potting on. That or I’ll just grow less next year 😂🙈
I am loving the vegetable garden. It’s exceeded the expectations from the planning stage. I still have to pinch myself that’s it my growing space ☺️☺️

It’s been lovely here today. Definitely feel the heat in the sun now. Forecast to be only 7° tonight though. The forecast changed 😅😅

May is such a big month in the garden. I make a cheat sheet to help me remember everything.🤣 Everything is looking great! Looking forward to watching them grow and grow and grow.
I keep forgetting to write down what I’ve planted/sown. It’s like little surprises every time I see something new pop up 😂

They won’t stay there but they can happily grow on a bit longer. The peppers are ridiculous. I need to not sow quite so early next year. 😂😅

Your plot is looking amazing already and it’s only just got going.
My tomatoes, chillies and aubergine have been in the greenhouse for a week or two now and they are thriving so I’m sure yours will be fine.
It’s always a little daunting when they first go out but hopefully the weather has finally changed.

😂😂 hang first water next. It they do look lovely. Oh daughter can make a sign called Pepper House. I put my dahlias out the other day 🤞🤞🤞. That would have been the better idea. Problem is I watered them and in doing so thought “they need moving really”. They were so heavy. 😂
I cannot wait for summer and to see it all come to life properly. Beet leaf miner was such a pain last year. Could only grow beetroot and chard if sown under cover.

Your chillies look fab wish mine were that tall mine are still tiny but they are going out into the polytunnel this weekend
I don’t think I’ll sow them quite so early next year. They had to start going out when they needed bigger pots. Couldn’t fit them on the shelves.
I am pretty sure we’ll all have them ripening around the same time. Tomatoes next!!😅😍

Lovely, lovely video, Clare! I am jealous of your peppers--they appear to be doing quite well! Is there a difference between a pepper and a chilli? We call them "chili peppers" sometimes but mostly they are all just "peppers" here. I'm excited to see how your sugar peach peppers come out! My mom would be jealous of your hanging baskets.
I think chillies are hotter than the sweet peppers. I have to admit, I’m not sure myself. There’s also jalapeños and habaneros and I’ve no idea which one they’d be 😂
Very relaxed video. Hanging baskets are looking lovely. I've put my aubergines into the greenhouse - they might sulk because it was cold yesterday but the good weather is coming now!!! 🎉🌞🌻
I felt very chilled. Was a lovely afternoon outside. Weather was mostly gorgeous. Forgot to include the Oca. It’s popping up out of the soil now ☺️
We have 6° forecast overnight tonight but then it’s warming up 🙏🏻

Nooooo I have weeds too and I’m sure they’ll multiply prolifically over the next 12 months

Looking great Clare! Loving the colour on your beautiful plot, I’m working frantically on my garden at home would like a few veggies at home this year too. Lovely peppers, so exciting! I’m loving the verigated leaves!

I did multisown with the Pablo last year. I think I’ll sow some more of those this weekend actually. They were a resounding success last year.
How’s the greenhouse coming along? I think you’ve a video in my watchlist. Need to make time to sit and watch a few. Busy time on the farm x

I've put up a couple of videos. My workbench is full. I have lots of trays of compost... With some seedlings. 😅 We got to 9 degrees last night and 20 today with windows open.
So hopefully some germination is occurring. I've got a raised bed ready and am trying to make another today. I may just have somewhere to plant soon. Despite it still being soggy underfoot.😢
It’s looking so good Clare you should be really proud of yourself. I bought one of those staple guns as I thought it would be easy to use but my word is it hard to press, I must be so weak as you made it look simple. The peppers and chillies look great, I put mine out a couple of weeks ago. Deb
The ones I initially put out still look a bit sad but they’re picking up slowly. Summer is within touching distance now .. hopefully.
The staple gun is a bit tricky. Sometimes it’s easy, other times I just cannot do it 😅
Love your setup, I get loads of ideas for growing veg in my garden.Interested to know what happened with jb using chicken pellets, can’t find it in his vlogs can you let me know where it is pls

Scroll down a bit in JB’s video list and you’ll see a picture of his head poking out of a HUGE hole in his polytunnel. He’d left them inside and the foxes wanted to get in, thinking chickens were in there 😭😭

Thanks Joe. It’s lovely to have a bit of space for the other plants to spread their wings, so to speak, in the house.
I’d love to get the tomatoes out soon. They are getting leggy.

@@TheFarmyardGarden I need to have a little shuffle about of the dahlias. Which should make enough room to put all the chillies out under cover, half have been out for nearly a week I think and are looking ok so they all can go out now. I've been and watered everything that needed it but not feeling too well so have had to call it a day, shame as it's glorious out but hopefully it will be dry tomorrow so I can get on with it. Afternoon of watching the snooker now 😆

It’s F1 here for me this afternoon/evening. The only plot joy I’ve enjoyed today is turning compost 😂

When did you start your peppers? Mine are still tiny... In fact all my seedlings never get as big as other people's before getting root bound. I don't know how people get big seedlings in plug trays...
Hey Kirsty. I potted in quite quickly from the initial seed trays. The peppers were sown on the 17th January and they’ve been potted on 3 times so far. Only 4 are in their final pots.
Sweet and hot peppers can cross - so you might want to separate them.
Noooo… brand new information! Dang.. I need another greenhouse…. 😂
@@TheFarmyardGarden just split them and the tomatoes.. some in each so the hot peppers are in one and the sweet peppers in the other
@nrstooge I’ll have a think as the tomatoes are going in the polytunnel and I wasn’t planning having peppers or chillies in there. They’ve been together since germination and already have flowers, so disaster may have already hit 🙈
Oooh. I also didn't know this! Maybe why I only got one plant with hot chillies last year, the rest were mild.

Some of mine absolutely sulked initially. They seem a bit perkier now. Must have been missing their friends still indoors 😂
