Can’t Believe It, The Plot’s Gone Wild! July Growth Explosion
Hopefully this uploads just in the nick of time to make it for my July Plot Tour.
Join me for a walk around a walk around my kitchen garden/home allotment to see how well everything is doing. So much has changed since last month’s plot tour. Peak season in the garden and growth is super fast and green.
The pumpkins are looking amazing both in the manure bin and the pumpkin archway. We even have pumpkins forming and that’s so exciting.
The rest of the summer squash is doing well now and the beans are about to start producing. There may even be a mammoth courgette or two hiding under thick foliage.
We have a good look around the polytunnel too. Exciting to see the tomatoes ripening. Lucas and melons are also forming now. Amazing to see.
It’s time to see how the sunflowers are doing and take my first measurement for Linda @Feelgoodgardens for the 2024 sunflower challenge.
Most of all, this tour is a happy, chatty totally uplifting look around my garden’s first season with this new plot. I’m so proud of how it’s doing.
Hope you enjoy the garden as much as I do.

Massive Vegetable Garden Harvest | July Abundance

WOW - that’s a word which appears countless times in this video! I decided to ditch the plot todo list and see just what was ready to harvest in the kitchen garden / home allotment. I was more than a little surprised at the results. Watch me as I take you on a tour around the plot and the polytunnel as I harvest carrots, peas, cucumbers and my very first EVER polytunnel tomato (Black Beauty). I...

    We love kale crisps/chips...we call them kale crack.....can't stop eating them once finished. I like fennel roasted with other veggies as my favorite way to eat. I've put them in things too but I just like them roasted. Raw slivered in a salad is probably my second favorite way to eat them. Your flowers are so amazing.

      Kale crisps really are just the best! Totally hooked! Fennel slivered on salad sounds very nice! Roasting with veggies also sounds just the ticket too. I’m excited to harvest them. I love the flowers on the plot. They really brighten the space. ❤️

    Amazing tour! The butternut without male flowers, can't they be pollinated by another squash/pumpkin? I staked one of the patty pans I'm growing in the greenhouse at work, it grew taller than me, I'm about 1,60 m only though, but they are all super massive and the one staked fell over and broke the stake (which could have been people partying in there at nights - I've gotten a lock now). It's still growing fine though, but it's a mess with 6 patty pans in three pallet collar beds plus tagetes, aubergines, physalis and lemon basil inbetween, now squeezed under the huge leaves of the patty pans. I've pollinated by hand as there aren't many bees there, but those in the end I can't reach. Lesson learned, one pumpkin per bed is enough. You have so many great tomatoes going, I'm no expert, but I think removing the two worse looking is a good idea. As season progresses, I feel removing sick/dying/finished plants is quite liberating. More room and the gardeners valuable time is spent on the healthy ones. So many beautiful flowers, it's such a delight to see!

    Hey 👋 where to start? 😂 Fennel we just add to salads…well we grew 1 last year 😂 so we added it to 1 salad 😂😂 So delighted the courgette plants are doing their thing now!!! Our 8 ball 🎱 courgette we pick at the size of a pool ball, but I was picking them early or the slugs would eat them. So glad for the uncurling of your tomato leaves. The darker ones are taking for ever to ripen. Glad you have 2 crushed heart!!! Well had. No point keeping a weak poor plant. You’re going to have plenty of bush beans…. They are prolific but all the better for us as they are delicious. All your flowers look amazing ❤❤ Ooh I feed my 🥒 with a homemade seaweed feed yesterday, so hope they pick up soon. Yes you will smell melon 🍈 ❤ we let some of ours last year drop off the plant, but found them overripe. Luffas all round!!! Loving seeing all your squash and pumpkins!!!! Polar bear 🐻‍❄️ I think I would like to try next year 🙃 Ohhh pinching tops from Greek gigante, I hadn’t done that, now too high to reach 😂 So much happening you must be meeting yourself coming back!!! Fab video which has shown us everything you have going on. See ya in August!! ❤ Allie & Tricia xx

      Those courgettes ended up left another couple of days and I’m pretty sure they’re marrows really now 😂🫣 I find it hard to know when the darker ones are ready. It’s not as obvious as the ones which ripen from green. I have removed the crushed heart now and feel quite relieved I’ve made that decision. You certainly influenced that decision with the issue on your plots. So thank you for sharing your troubles. I love French beans and am hoping to have a year round supply of them frozen. I’ve done one freezer bag full today already. Amazing! Fingers crossed for your cucumbers too. Homemade seaweed feed.. even better! I was surprised how much I had to show in the video. Turned out much longer than I expected it to be 😂

    Ohhh wow , its looking fantastic, I'm currently in the transition of moving from the allotment to home, I've got a decent size space but not as big as yours! Sick of the 4 legged critters getting everything on the plot. Its amazing being lucky enough to have things growing at home, it makes life so much easier I can just wonder out whenever I want ! I've got some creamy coloured calendula if you would like some seeds, they look lovely mixed with the yellow and orange! i have 'frilly' Gladioli in the garden at home, ohhh my they are so beautiful, it looks like they have had lots of babies as well - happy to share also! 100% take off the lower leaves of the Celeriac, thats what gives it its bumpy texture. Those Kent Blue peas look lovely, beautiful flower 🙂 Theres so much to learn, like your sweetcorn, UA-cam definitely helps. some things you can never fathom, i have one tomatoe in the allotment polytunnel that has leaf curl which is a tigeralla, ever other one is fine. Take care x

    • @TheFarmyardGarden
      @TheFarmyardGarden 2 дні тому

      Thank you for the lovely offers. I’ve bought Snow Princess and Sherbert Fizz Calendula seeds for next year already. Addicted to them! We need to put up our rabbit fencing too. That’ll be top of the list next week. The gladioli are just so lovely. My mother in law had some of my bulbs and she’s ended up with all of the deep red, and bright red colours in her mix. So striking. That’s great advice for the celeriac. I’ll take the leaves off tomorrow. It’s such a shame no more of the Kent blue peas germinated. Could do with more seeds for next year 😍 Hope your polytunnel tomato uncurls its leaves again soon. The UA-cam community is brilliant! You’ll find it so much more important now you’ll be growing at home, as we don’t have the community that you’d have enjoyed on the allotment previously. It’s been invaluable for me. Wandering on to the veg garden with your morning coffee, bed hair and pjs.., Priceless! Happy New Home & Garden 😍

Feel relieved to have removed that one but I’m hoping the others can hang in there. What successes are you having in the garden this time? I just had a look under the tiles. No slugs. There is black plastic from on top of the bin there plus strulch on top of that, so hopefully that’ll put them off a bit. Thanks for looking out for the pumpkins ☺️

    Morning Clare, I think tiles are just to help keep them off wet soil and rotting. WOW the garden is looking amazing you would think it had been there for years. I gave up trying to grow broccoli in the summer it’s way too hot. 😂😂 nope it looks more like Chinese cabbage 🥬. Can you put 4 stakes on either corner and one in the centre of the oca and then weave a twine around for support. Since you are so far from others you should miss the blight 🤞🤞🤞. I don’t grow fennel but sometimes it’s nice just to grow things for their smell. So much abundance after a dodgy start to the season but weather is proving to be a great boost. A lovely walks about Clare thank you for sharing, Ali 🌞🇨🇦

    • @TheFarmyardGarden
      @TheFarmyardGarden День тому

      Hey Ali, thank you for the support and advice, S always. I think I’ll do that with the Oca. Great suggestion. Your comment about the fennel made me think about how I didn’t grow chard this year, as I myself don’t really like it. I really regret that now as I’ve missed seeing it in the beds, as it’s so beautiful… so maybe I could have grown it to be ornamental. No different to growing flowers I guess. I’m blown away by how much change there’s been in the garden in the last month. It’s flourishing. I am so pleased with how it’s turned out. It’s lovely seeing something you visioned coming true. So rewarding. I also can’t get quite believe we didn’t start the plot until the end of August last year. Crazy 12 months! Hope it’s not so oppressively hot for you guys over there at the moment? We’ve had a lovely week really. FINALLY! It’s been lovely to feel so much warmth and the plants definitely agreed. Look after yourself. Lovely to you, Gerald and Chevy

      I’ve found tomato watering guidelines so confusing. Last year I didn’t suffer at all and watered my tomatoes every morning, just a small amount (cm or so maybe) and they were happy. This year I’ve been using the moisture meter because advice seems other anything from watering once a week, twice a week or oh watering when the meter says dry… which seem to contradict the regular watering theory and left me confuddled 😂🤯🤪 The plants seem to be coping much better since I’ve ignored the moisture meter and gone back to a little every morning, especially during this hot daytime temps in the tunnel.

      It’s reassuring to know it’s not just me suffering, Jimmy. A month ago people were saying cold loving crops were enjoying the lack of summer. That’s all spun on its head now, as they’re struggling with just a couple of weeks of weird weather. Still cold overnight here. Had 7.6°c in the polytunnel on Sunday night 😱😱 I had the pongo bean seeds from Danny at The Grow Up Channel. They’re such lovely straight beans. My normal French beans are so curly. They were straight last year.. same variety. That’s some great height for your sunflowers too. It’s my titan ones, not featured, that are supposed to be the ones for the challenge. Not sure what they stand at currently but they’re not yet flowering. It’s brilliant how fast things change this time of year. Finally courgette fritters are on the menu! I have a butternut in my garden right now and I've got a few small fruit and lots of buds - and even the buds have the butternut shape. I think yours might be spaghetti? And looking at the picture of them they really don't have more than a suggestion of the shape of a regular butternut! Now I'm excited to watch yours grow and I've added them to my list of seeds to buy for next year! <3

    Looking good! Where did you get your big brassica 'tent'? Looks great and easier access than DIY options. I recognised the Crown Prince right away. I have about 6, maybe more pumpkins developing of those ones! But I have ONE spaghetti squash that has 6 on its own (and. stayed compact like a courgette). I'm just about to go out and cull 5 big outdoor tomato plants that were going great guns until this week. Green tomato chutney here we come. Sigh. Greenhouse tomatoes ok so far and other outdoor ones, not even so far away. This corner doesn't get effective sun early in the day, so the morning dew lingers. I have only 2 hybrids total, as we usually have dry summers and don't have this issue. So sad. I just hope none of the rest succumb too quickly

      In the greenhouse or the ones in the brassica tunnel? I keep picking the ones up in the brassica tunnel to check and no slugs as yet. I can take them up (they’re upside down travertine tiles ) from the brassica tunnel if it becomes an issue. 🙏🏻🙏🏻 Greenhouses ones are on a solid concrete base, so should be ok. When you find a runner with roots…don’t,t cut it off the main plant yet…but pot it up in a small pot and let it carry on growing next to the raised bed…let it establish for another month before cutting off from mummy😀your plot looks wonderful…well done, Jinx😀🤓

    The plot is perfection Clare! Congrats. Melon plants looking great too. My Minnesota Melon x2 also have fruits and can’t wait! I’d pull the tomato, not worth the risk. Did you say it’s one of two? If so, it’s not a complete loss. I’ve got to get rid of two in my greenhouse this morning as I found black/brown stem rot locally to where there has been sucker removal😬. Just going to try and salvage the few ripening fruit🙄. I don’t know about a trug, I think you’re gonna need a wheelbarrow for your harvesting😂. Well done you 👍

Mind blown! ☺️☺️ You make a good point over the tomatoe. Initially they were both very poor, so I was hoping one would survive… now one looks better I should get this one out. I’ll do that later. Hope there’s no blight in yours. Such a worry. I hope I need a wheelbarrow for harvesting! Wouldn’t that be something ❤️❤️

Took me a 20 minute cuppa staring at the dodgy tomato plants before removing the first one. I’ve left the other one for now, as it wasn’t as bad. I had also cut out the majority of it and sprayed it with a dilution of hydrogen peroxide and will be watching it and all the others like a hawk now🫣. Fingers crossed we swerve the blight🤞🏻

    As someone who all year round could fill a basket with produce, the secret is good succession planting, winter here have from store onions, pumpkins, 3 types of garlic, can dig potatoes, yams, carrots, parsnips and leeks, can cut chard, spinach 3 different types, 3 different lettuces, cabbage, broccoli 2 varieties. We have had very few frosts and haven't dug the potatoes. From freezer corn and tomatoes.

      I am really struggling with succession sowing. I need to get more on the ball. I touch on it in my new video. I either miss the window entirely, or I seem to sow too early and don’t have space for them. I have so much yet to learn. Some winters we have marginal frosts, last year we had -8.9°c 😱😱

    The trick to get a decent potato harvest from containers is appropriate and consistent watering. Even in a wet spring I regularly water my bucket grown spuds.

    • @TheFarmyardGarden
      @TheFarmyardGarden 5 днів тому

      I’ve been watering almost daily. The buckets weren’t dry when I emptied them. The foliage grew really tall though this year, so I suspect a lack of light played a part for the awfully dull spring weather had. I was still pleased with them and they taste divine 😍
