I’m trying to focus on the positives, Kaz. She was 26, so loved a long and full life. Thankfully she wasn’t ill for too long but I don’t think I’d ever have been prepared to lose her. I’ve owned her for 19 years. Enjoyed every single day of those 19 years.. even when she stood on my toes (regularly!) It’s been a wonderful growing season and I’m really sad that it’s all going to start changing in the next month. I suspect the plot will look very different at the end of September. I need to start finding ways to preserve more of what I’m growing. I keep putting up posts on Facebook for courgettes and cucumbers. Everyone runs the opposite way when they see me coming now 😂
Thank you Chrissie. August has been a testing month away from the garden.. but what a joy the garden has been. I think it’s kept me sane to be honest ❤️
Thanks Maiju. She was a wonderful age. When I was with the vet, waiting for her to send Patches over Rainbow Bridge, her life (or rather our life together) flashed before me. I was telling her how much I loved her, what a good girl she was and thanked her for all the fun we’d had…. Whilst thinking about the first time I tried her, how she flung herself over a 5 bar gate when she first saw a cow, the first farm ride we went to and fences we jumped, the beach ride you saw here, a full season clean boot hunting, the time she showed me up out on a hack when we saw a horse drawn funeral hearse.. so many memories. All like a highlight reel in my mind as she fell asleep for the final time. I miss her. I will never do the things we did together again with another horse. A true childhood dream come true.

It’s going to be so sad to see the tunnel lose its jungle over autumn and winter. Might put some brassicas in it this winter. Your spring cabbage do well in the tunnel don’t they over winter? Could it make 10ft? 😱🙏🏻🙏🏻 I’m glad someone appreciates the fun of timing that intro. Made me smile when I realised I threw my arms out in time to the music too (that was actually a happy coincidence, although I would have altered it to fit anyway) 😅😂
@TheFarmyardGarden yeah clare the spring cabbages weirdly did better on the side away from the facing sun... but could have been the variety. "APRIL". Danny 🌱
I hit the jackpot yesterday. Marrow Soup! Oh.. it’s delicious. Onions, marrows, potatoes, butter beans, hilli powder and veg stock. Blitzed to make a smooth soup. Yummy! I also like courgette fritters and I’ve seen a recipe for marrow and ginger jam
Hi Clare- amazing plot- looks so abundant. I got fed up with my labels being pulled out so I now use the style of labels that garden centres use and attach them to sticks/wires. they can't remove those! And, if I get rodents digging around I don't lose the labels by them being buried. I still use the stick labels in my pots and trays, but when I plant them out, I change over to the loop through labels. Happy gardening 🙂
That’s a brilliant idea. I used those labels on my potato buckets, so could definitely have done than in the raised beds. Thank you! It’s hard to believe this is the peak month and things will start to die back and the 3D element will soon disappear until next season. It flies by doesn’t it?
@@TheFarmyardGarden it does. I'm feeling so sad Summer is coming to a close. I detest the Einter, although Autumn weather acn be ok. I hate the dark nights - feel frustrated tht my garden hours are cut short! It always feels O am indoors such a lot once the clocks go back.
Garden looks great. I love the Teddy bear sunflowers. I was wondering the same about celeriac. Mine is next to the parsnips, so maybe I'll take them at the same time? Quick check of Charles Dowding book - October - November, says he!
The cukes grow weird as they start to end their life cycle. You are getting some great ones. What's your favorite variety? Do you have roly poly/pill bugs (wood lice)? They nibble my radishes like yours have been nibbled. looking great and your harvests are amazing.
I think this year the Marketmore and La Diva have been favoured above the telegraph improved. Absolutely not fans of crystal lemon. Just too bitter. Very unpleasant. I have Femspot and Carmen to sow next year but also picked up one called Bella.. because that’s my life long nickname. I’m going to grow gherkins to pickle too for my daughter We do get wood lice here. Can’t say I’ve seen them in the beds, but I’ll keep an eye out. Thanks Robin
I don’t Like cucamelons but Gerald and the sis in law do thank goodness. Then I find out they self seed all over 🤦♀️, good thing they were in a pot. Such abundance in the garden you’d think you had been growing there for years. I am so sorry for you both 😢 I know it’s never easy to lose a friend, he had an amazing home and will leave a large void in your heart ❤, Ali
Wait a cotton picking moment… the cucumelons will be self seeding? Dang! They are the gift that keeps on giving 😂😂😱 I find it hard to believe it’s the first season with the plot too… and I know it’s true 😂😅 Patches really was a special girl. She’s been in my life for 19 years. So many major life events. Isobel is 21, she can’t remember patches not being there x
Oh, I read that you should never save seed from your own pumpkins etc if you or anyone near you grows inedible decorative squashes! Not only do they turn out bitter, but that bitterness is toxic. So are cucumbers if they go bitter...
Yes, I heard that about them too. I don’t plan on saving seeds as I already have some left. I can’t remember which told me the baby boos were decoration only but apparently they’re not. They are edible too. That other one is weird though. It’s got markings in it like the boldernice courgette hasn’t it?
Ohhh thats brilliant Clare, i need to know your secret with the luffa, ive tried for the last 2 years and not managed to get one to harvest! been to the pot today, i had a Minnesota melon that should have been ready to pick, there was so sign of it at all, dam rats, hence the reason for calling the plot a day and growing at home, im loving it so far, its so convenient! harvested massive basket of half ripe tomatoes which ill finish off on a windowsill or several 🤣🤣 . Did you grow the Barry's crazy cherry tom, if not I highly recommend it, i'm saving seeds if you would like some. take care x
Seed saving and sharing sounds good Anita, thank you! I haven’t grown Barry’s Crazy Cherry. I should have as it’s my dad’s name! (Barry.. not crazy or cherry ha) How devastating to lose the melon. I would also be worried fellow plot neighbours had taken it. Hard to imagine a rat would leave no evidence at all. So pleased you’re loving growing at home though. It does make such a difference being able to potter about the garden (often in PJs). I sowed my luffa seeds in January. They were so big by the time I planted them. Little secret.., I kept them behind the garden room french doors and stuck the heater on to keep it over 14° for them. I didn’t own up to that when the electricity bill came in! I’ll be saving seed (assuming we make it to ripening), so happy to share some luffa seeds with you for next year too.

I’m glad someone appreciates the fun of timing that intro.
"APRIL". Danny 🌱
Your Marrows seem to have done well this year Clare, even mine have grown, but I dont know what to do with 'em apart from stuff them
I hit the jackpot yesterday.
Clare the plot looks absolutely amazing 😍
You need one then very long bendy flag poles with a bird on a wire. Will possibly keep the magpies away.
That’s not a bad shout.. or some bunting between the arches. Might look in to that for next year now.
☺️
Garden looks great. I love the Teddy bear sunflowers.
I was wondering the same about celeriac. Mine is next to the parsnips, so maybe I'll take them at the same time? Quick check of Charles Dowding book - October - November, says he!
Ooo thanks Kirsty! I had a feeling they were something we picked after the first frost but couldn’t remember. I’m looking forward to celeriac mash! 😍
I’m going to grow gherkins to pickle too for my daughter
We do get wood lice here.
Dang! They are the gift that keeps on giving 😂😂😱
I find it hard to believe it’s the first season with the plot too… and I know it’s true 😂😅
Patches really was a special girl. She’s been in my life for 19 years. So many major life events. Isobel is 21, she can’t remember patches not being there x
Stuff them with mince and onion garlic lovely with mash
I’ve done that a few times. Also done it with the Patty pans. The family has a limit on twice a week 😅
marrow and ginger jam is tasty
Oh wow! Thank you!! I just looked up the recipe. TOP OF THE LIST! Brilliant. 🤩
(Barry.. not crazy or cherry ha)
How devastating to lose the melon.
