The Monterey Zoo only just became a Zoo just before covid struck. The animals of the Zoo were film/TV animals. Tours were given but with Hollywood being so far and the introduction of CGI the animals were no longer needed so they turned the property into a functional zoo.

      Thanks for the explanation.
Until recently, I lived in the area for 45 years and this was the first time that I have heard of Vision Quest referred to as the Monterey Zoo.
It's fun to watch you with the animals.
I'm glad that you two enjoyed your visit to Monterey County. Jeff could probably spend the rest of his life just doing stories about it's history.

I've driven highway 152 many times between Fresno and Monterey and I never knew there was a zoo in Monterey.
I always stopped at Casa De Fruta to stock up on fruits, veggies and snacks. I always loved that drive. When Sarah was feeding the elephant the carrots I wanted to hear it say, "Eaaaaaaaaa........ what's up Doc!"
    Looks like she had fun.

Not always a zoo. Got started by keeping animals for the film industry.
      (Wild Things Animal Rentals, Inc.)
About 5 years ago started to change over to a zoo due to computer graphic getting so good. Got their zoo accreditation in June 2020.

Can I give a 2 thumbs up? I really appreciate Sara’s love for animals! I really love elephants too and I sometimes think they are safer in captivity then in the wild as I have seen videos of their predators and I can’t watch as they fight to stay alive! I also don’t like when man kills them for the ivory and I stay away from anything that is real ivory.. and of course thanks for the history lesson on the elephants as I don’t think many people have any clue how they got here.

I’m glad that you enjoyed it, Steve! It was a fun experience as have been all of our experiences with animals that Sara arranges. I should’ve shot some video on the inside of the cabin. Sara took two pictures of the inside but I am in both of them and I didn’t like how I looked so I didn’t include them. LOL oh. We had excellent weather on that trip. However the next morning it was overcast for a while. I guess that’s the kind of weather that you get on the coast.

@@jbenziggy it must’ve been the next morning when you went to the Monterey cemetery. I remember how overcast and gray and ugly it was. I never understood how elephants needed to be with family until the last few years. We had Bertha and Tina here where I live in Reno at the Nugget I remember they used to complain about them not living a normal life.. that's true they need their family I'm sure it's sad for them.. but he looks like he's happy and especially Sarah!! Great video! Have you thought about doing one on the old Riverbank Ammunition plant out by Rainbow Fields? There was always rumors there was a missile silo out there. Had friends that swore they saw it late at night.

That is so cool. The wife and I did not know that Monterey had a zoo. Going to have to check it out.

Correct...how many of us have visited the aquarium at least once?!

The Monterey Zoo only just became a Zoo just before covid struck. The animals of the Zoo were film/TV animals. Tours were given but with Hollywood being so far and the introduction of CGI the animals were no longer needed so they turned the property into a functional zoo.

Wow, the San Diego Zoo's "Safari Park" eliminated all elephant encounters after a trainer was killed in 1991. They used to routinely walk the elephant down walkways near park visitors, had an elephant show and actually gave elephant rides. They have shut down all chances for visitors to interact with the elephants out of an abundance of caution. Glad to see that you had a chance to interact with them.

I can imagine an elephant getting sick of having to tote people around. I have ridden once and remember thinking that at the time. With the exception of photos and feeding the carrots the first time there were large fencing between us and him.

Sarah, I got to hang with a young African cow (female elephant) too! She was part of the Marine World/Africa, USA attraction (now defunct) in Vallejo. With about 4 other pachydermous steeds, she gave rides to the park guests. After I rode her, I slipped off to the side, and came right up to her flank, like it was a very natural thing for us to be doing together. She accepted me completely and seemed happy that we were interacting, gently resting her very heavy trunk upon my shoulder. I reached up, talking softly to her most of the time, and stroked her cheek. I ran my hand across those enormous ears. She had such a gentle gaze with those big soft brown eyes. I caressed her shoulder; I caressed her flank. Her thick hide felt surprisingly velvety soft, as I thought perhaps she received a frequent lotion rubdown. We must have "HUNG" together for up to FIVE full minutes, when I felt a hand on my shoulder, turning me around. It was the cow's handler, and he was NOT pleased. He physically guided me away and when we were away out of earshot of that elephant, he read me a kind of riot act about the dangers of elephants, and I thought that I was to be 86'ed from the park; but I skedaddled away. I sorely miss that interaction.
Somewhere in Central Africa, there's a chi-chi safari lodge, where the well-heeled toff crowd can go to take elephant ride 'n' camp trips with African Pachies for up to a week's time, seeing the glories of Africa from 15 feet off the ground, on an elephant's back. Man, oh MAN! Wouldn't I LOVE to go, if I had THAT kind of money! I'd be begging the "mahouts" (what elephant handler/partners are called in India) to let me help them out in their chores of feeding, etc., at day's end. That Pachy and I would be friends for life. I'll be "Papa Tembo", any old day!!
It was kind of sad to see that Butch didn't have any tusks; they look so beautiful on an elephant. He was the embodiment of a perfect gentleman, too.
There are other Capital Beasts that I'd sorely like to hang out with--Bison--Lions (Could you imagine running your fingers through those long, long manes?)--African Rhinos--Gorillas (think of Koko)--Cheetahs--Bald Eagles--Golden Eagles--Wolves (Lt. Dunbar's "Two Socks")--even big Flying Fox Fruit Bats!
"Papa Tembo"? Taking a page from the movie "Hatari!", I wouldn't shoo Sonia the Cheetah away from my lawn chaise, as Red Buttons did; I'd be drawing up that big "kitty" up onto me, for as much of her as could fit on my lap. It's possible that Sonia may have been actor Hardy Kruger's pet and that the script may have been jiggered so that Sonia could have joined in on the "fun". In the British TV Series "All Creatures Great and Small", actor Robert Hardy's own personal Whippet, was incorporated into the scripts.
In Russia, they breed domesticated Red Foxes as household pets. A dandy alternative, or compliment to, to that hypothetical Airedale that you may already own!
Speaking of Bison, there ARE a few that have been kept AS household pets, believe it or not. Up to 3,000 pounds of pure, shaggy, bovine love! The most famous of these has been Bailey the Buffalo of Alberta, Canada. I forget his human "Daddy's" name at the moment, but he's a retired rancher. Bailey has full run of the inside of Daddy's & Mommie's house--the floors must need extra joistings to support Bailey's weight and extra-wide doorways, with clearance for his hump. He's been judiciously hired out to ad agencies to make TV commercials. He watches TV with his human "parents", and what a curious sofa he must make for them, as they snuggle up to Bailey--a shaggy sofa with its own heartbeat! I suspect that Bailey's favorite programs must be rugby and American-style football games, since the milling-about of the players must resemble a Bison herd. What a job it must be, to polish his horns and hooves; to give him a shampoo; to style that prodigious mane that covers his face, head, throat, neck, hump, & forequarters. He and Daddy ride into town, in a customized old Oldsmobile ('70's vintage?) that has no top and an enlarged compartment for him to stand in. Once in town, they pop into a pub, where Bailey will grasp a bottle of Labatt's, Moosehead, Molson's, whatever, in his incisors, toss back that great shaggy head and guzzle away! Oh, how I'd love to spend time with Bailey! He was made a pet of, when he was one of those tiny 40-50 pound bandy-legged cinnamon colored calves.
