We keep a clean empty ice cream container by the sink to collect rinsed eggshells, when it is full the shells go on a baking sheet, lightly crushed, and into a 350° oven (when dinner comes out) for 3 minutes, then turn off the oven and let them cool there. Then grind in coffee grinder and sift through fine seive into container. Safe for my dogs, or me! We use it in a variety of dog food toppers, with chia and flax and other goodies, to go on our basic homemade food.
We use a plastic grocery bag. Put eggshells in bag, store in freezer until ready to bake. Pull bag out of freezer,, crush eggshells in bag, then pour onto baking sheet, cook and pulverize to powder as shown. Never a stink or issue with bacteria, Salmonella, etc...
You could probably also add marbles into the bag during the crushing stage to crush them even faster and further! I usually just smash them with a mortar and pestle because I find it therapeutic, but using a bag seems a lot faster lol.
I put back the egg shell back into the carton in the fridge until I have enough then I put the egg shells into the freezer for about 2 to 3 weeks then take them out and grind.
great video, thanks for posting this tutorial. I did not know that dogs could eat eggshells. you're too funny, i'll watch all your future dog videos and hope you make more. I would love to see a dog treat recipe
I have been using egg shells for many years for my plants But now, I will be using it for my 2 girls because they always had home made dog food that I made from scratch. Thank you for that.
Thanks heaps for this Buck. I've been making my own dog food since my boy was a pup with a very similar recipe to yours. I was adding fresh (ish) eggshells, but I love the idea of powdering and sterilizing it like this. I use 2 large slow cookers to make a couple of weeks worth........not quicker, but I reckon it's easier, and I can cook it overnight or all day while I am at work. Thanks again......love your style :)
Not clear how you store the eggshells in the airtight container before you start the process. But it's safest to keep them in the fridge, or better yet, the freezer. You're going to get salmonella regardless but you're limiting the growth of unwanted food poisoning agents. Do not skip the boiling, as one viewer suggested. Boil the shells above 135 degrees for an hour. Heat does not kill salmonella, it breeds it. Extended heat will eliminate it though. The powder should last 2, maybe 3, years in a tight container in a cool and dry spot. Provided it's totally dry!
I cook for my South African mastiff and my chihuahua. Where did you get the food safe pail from? I make a huge mess with bowls etc. Love your videos…subscribed
Excelent video. I make my dogs food. Just learned about the eggshells though this video. Now I'll add them to my dogs food also. Thank you so much. Blessings.
If there is no bone in the recipe, then I would say he was right with one teaspoon per cup of food. The food I feed already has bone in it, but I feed 1 teaspoon of eggshell for every egg that I feed my dog. They get two or three eggs a week.
Home Depot sells a "Majic Chef" 12 qt instapot only online for around a $100. This is beg enough to handle your complete dog food without having to use a Plastic pail.
Such a helpful video & so many helpful comments! I feel like I can actually do this! Also excited bc I make a ton of hard boiled eggs every week already so I think I’ll be able to skip the boil step and go straight to baking. (Lmk if I’m wrong lol)
umm... here is a thought to save yourself a ton of time and labor... put the full egg and egg shell into the blender and then put that in your insta-pot. Yes.
Are you supposed to rinse the shell out prior to the boil?? I just boiled a bunch I saved and the pot was full of boiled egg pieces. When I went to the baking stage I just threw it away because I don't think boiled egg is supposed to be mixed up with the crush egg shell. Anyone else have this or know what to do??
I rinse because I save them for a few days - boiling does same just keeps clean while waiting to bake them - baking kills everything and is really all you need to do
I have never bothered with all of this. When I make the food and add 2 eggs to her food, I then just simply chop up the eggs shells and add to the food, have not had any complaints… is there a reason you go through this process?
@@TheBuckStop I still crush them up, ends up being like salt… I was just wondering if there was a nutrient benefit by baking the egg shells? Love your work and Sable 💕
FYI - feed store sells calcium by the bag for chickens & fowl. Is most likely "egg shells"... Uncertain, but would be easier/faster and isn't that expensive. Saving egg shells is still what I do, but I'd probably have to add eggs to the dog food to have enough shells for calcium add... I don't cook enough eggs to have enough shells. 😜
We don’t cook eggs very often, either. So…. I go to my local Waffle House on Sunday evening and get a ton of eggshells. Sunday morning is one of their busiest days so they have a lot of shells. I recommend taking your own container. Then I wash them and put them on a cookie sheet. Then into a 350 degree oven for 15 min. They are now dry, sanitized and brittle. I smash them a little, then grind them to a powder in my coffee grinder. Easy Peazy!
You can add 1 egg per lb of meat in his dog food recipe & now you have empty egg shells ✨☺️ I don’t eat eggs myself so I toss the yolks in the dog food! It’s really good for them too.

nice job!!

Ypur graciousness toward the annoying comments is admirable. Thank you for these easy recipes. It will help a lot of dogs live healthier and longer.
Love how Sable always knows when you are cookin'
Next we need homemade dog treats! 💙
agreed!!!!
If you have a garden, you can also sprinkle your dried powdered egg shells around your tomato plants. They love extra calcium.
I heard that - great idea
I boil my eggs and then I remove the shell and just sit them on a towel over night and they don't stink.
I have done it once, but I didn’t boil them. Thank you for showing right way to make it❤
I put back the egg shell back into the carton in the fridge until I have enough then I put the egg shells into the freezer for about 2 to 3 weeks then take them out and grind.
i made a video on the egg shell recipe - thank you
I put my dog food in insta seal bags for freezer…so easy and pull one out per day. Doesn’t take up as much room as containers!
That egg you do for the dog is good for humans too. Add it to your protein shakes. Also great to put in your chicken feed.
great video, thanks for posting this tutorial. I did not know that dogs could eat eggshells. you're too funny, i'll watch all your future dog videos and hope you make more. I would love to see a dog treat recipe
you can get free food grade buckets from most groceries stores with a bakery. I get them from mine. for grain etc.
love the information to make healthier meals for your dog.

That is awesome! Thank you so much!
I've been doing this for years but to give to my tomatoes in the garden.
Thank you so much for your videos. I'm now making my own dog food and he's eating better and it's cheaper than The Farmer's Dog.
You are so welcome!
Try using a Sheet of Parchment paper under the Eggs in the oven. Easier to transfer to Blender.

I usually drop the egg shells in the compost bin, but I'm going to do this instead! Thanks for the video:)

Tractor supply has 5 gallon food, safe buckets.
Thank you for sharing I made the dog food!! My dogs love it
Excelent video. I make my dogs food. Just learned about the eggshells though this video. Now I'll add them to my dogs food also. Thank you so much. Blessings.
Thank you for all these helpful videos, you’ve helped me and my dogs on their new food journey, making these now!
Thank you so much for all you do and all you share. Blessings and lots of health to you and your human and canine and feline families
I think you can skip the boiling. They should be sanitized by baking in the oven. Maybe a little longer. Say, 350 for 30 minutes.
thank you - you may be right
After blended to powder Does it store fine in a jar on the counter?
Wonderful. I am going to do this. Thank you frim Cape Town.
You are so welcome
Hello- will do this thanks. One vet said, 50% 🥩 25% veg25% carb. I wonder if potato and rice it too many carbs ?
Thanks for recipe for healthy dog food and calcium!!!
thank you for commenting
Love your videos sooo happy I found you love ❤️ It
Thank you
Oh my, was just rinsing and pulverizing in a old blender - better get to sanitizing before blending.
you need a BIG old school pressure cooker at this point. We have a Presto 23qt that would probably handle full batches for you...
One small correction, one teaspoon per one pound of dog food not one cup.
If there is no bone in the recipe, then I would say he was right with one teaspoon per cup of food. The food I feed already has bone in it, but I feed 1 teaspoon of eggshell for every egg that I feed my dog. They get two or three eggs a week.
This is great. Question..how long can you freeze the food?
Can I use ziplock bag to freeze?? Or is not good
Thank you! Your videos rock
you have the best information. Thank you
Home Depot sells a "Majic Chef" 12 qt instapot only online for around a $100. This is beg enough to handle your complete dog food without having to use a Plastic pail.
Can you use the shells after I make hard boiled eggs for myself?
Thanks!
how long have you been making your dog food?
You inspired me I went to the super and bought 220 bucks on ingredients now I am cooking on top stove
Thank you it’s also good for humans
How long does the powdered shells last in sealed container or should i freeze
Such a helpful video & so many helpful comments! I feel like I can actually do this! Also excited bc I make a ton of hard boiled eggs every week already so I think I’ll be able to skip the boil step and go straight to baking. (Lmk if I’m wrong lol)
What do you put in the dog food to help with arthritis/ dysplasia?
Do I use a tsp once or twice a day?
You rock, thanks for sharing
How many eggs was that? And how much did you get from it?
Hi can you add to dry dog food?
You don't have to boil the shells, they get boiled when you boil the egg.
umm... here is a thought to save yourself a ton of time and labor...
put the full egg and egg shell into the blender and then put that in your insta-pot.
Yes.
That sounds like a good idea- I don’t room or have time to save a lot of egg shells to make this. I might just try that.
Was thinking the same thing now... But not sure if the egg shell is brittle enough to blend it, will have to try it out first.
I put 2 eggs directly into the food processor to grind them small and cooked it with the rice and vegetables in the instant pot.
I rinse because I save them for a few days - boiling does same just keeps clean while waiting to bake them - baking kills everything and is really all you need to do
So what is the purpose for baking if they have already been cooked by boiling?
It completely drys them so you can make it into a powder instead of a paste
hi, buy egg at grocery store they have to bleach wash the egg before they pack to sale ?buy egg at the local farm then it is more expensive $8 a dozen
Curious how much you add for your dog
I add 5 teaspoons to the recipe - the spinach has calcium as well - I suggest checking with your vet to be safe
Great idea!😊Regina
Thank you! 😊
Btw: ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ Sable, such a gorgeous gal
thank you
I have never bothered with all of this. When I make the food and add 2 eggs to her food, I then just simply chop up the eggs shells and add to the food, have not had any complaints… is there a reason you go through this process?
that's a great idea but Sable will not eat bigger shells so I need to crush them up
@@TheBuckStop I still crush them up, ends up being like salt… I was just wondering if there was a nutrient benefit by baking the egg shells? Love your work and Sable 💕

The stuff at the feed store is probably oyster shell. You don't want to feed that to your dogs.
I don’t make eggs often enough. :/
You can add 1 egg per lb of meat in his dog food recipe & now you have empty egg shells ✨☺️ I don’t eat eggs myself so I toss the yolks in the dog food! It’s really good for them too.
Fabulous
Aha!! I just told you that in the first video i saw from you ! Lol
lol I know many other did too
