The Mudumalai National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary also a declared tiger reserve, lies on the northwestern side of the Nilgiri Hills (Blue Mountains), in Nilgiri District, about 150 kilometres north-west of Coimbatore city in Tamil Nadu, India. It shares its boundaries with the states of Karnataka and Kerala. The sanctuary is divided into five ranges - Masinagudi, Thepakadu, Mudumalai, Kargudi and Nellakota.
The protected area is home to several endangered and vulnerable species including Indian elephant, Bengal tiger, gaur and Indian leopard. There are at least 266 species of birds in the sanctuary, including critically endangered Indian white-rumped vulture and long-billed vulture.
The Western Ghats Nilgiri Sub-Cluster of 6,000 square kilometres (2,300 sq mi), including all of Mudumalai National Park, is under consideration by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee for selection as a World Heritage Site.
The Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary was established in 1940, the 2nd oldest national park in India. The National Park covers an area of 217.76 km2 (84.08 sq mi) with the Wildlife Sanctuary covering an additional 103.23 km2 (39.86 sq mi), for a total area of area of 321 km2 (124 sq mi).
In April 2007, the Tamil Nadu state government declared Mudumalai to be a tiger reserve, in an effort to conserve the country's dwindling tiger populations.
Ooty is one of the finest hill station in India and also called as "Queen of Mountain". All the local and International tourist come to Ooty throughout the year. Best season for come to Ooty is March to June. Mansoon time Ooty looks very greenery.

To sight animals, the best times I choose to travel thru Mudumalai n Bandipur Sanctuaries is either between 6.30 am n 8.30 am or in the evening btwn 4.30 pm n 6.30 pm as well as post good rains. These are times the animals sightings will be easy. This info is based on my personal experience as a regular commuter between Ooty n Bangalore via Masinagudi, Mudumalai, Bandipur n Mysore. Never stop n take photos as I've seen tourists being attacked by animals n losing their precious lives.

@@hajaaa100 Hi Bro, very glad you asked a useful n practical question. I've encountered a lot of such scenarios myself. Few pointers that may help u in such situations: 1. Never honk or create noise 2. Never get nervous, though situation doesn't permit 3. If you see them in the middle of the road, stop at a safe distance. They generally move to the sides as their motive is grass or anything that they can eat. 4. Especially if u see a baby elephant in the group, exercise extra caution as the adult elephants will do anything to protect their little ones. 5. Wait for any heavy vehicle n just follow them n cross the herd safely as they do not attack heavy vehicles generally. There are a few instances of such attacks too but very rare. 6. If you see a single elephant, play very safe as they cannot be judged n they are called rouge elephants n are very dangerous to judge. Hence, keeping a safe distance will help. 7. Never, never, never stop or get down to take photos or selfies if you really value ur life. Have seen many instances where people have lost their lives due to this foolish act.
8. I suggest you don't slow down as well n keep going at your normal speed so that they are not disturbed. Anyways there are a good 77 speed breakers to make your trip inside the sanctuary miserable due to some idiots who claim to have Engineering! 9. Be alert n with presence of mind n ur natural instinct, you'll be better placed to think quick n act quickly shud any attack take place. Though they seem harmless n are at a good distance, we always have to remember that they are 'Wild Animals' n so called for a good reason. Hope you have a safe trip Bro!👍👍

Appade ellay...traffic kammeya erukkurappo dhaan wild animals anga freeya move pannudhunga. Once I travelled from Bangalore to Ooty on a week day and I saw many wild animals in this forest. But when I was returning, it was Christmas day and there was heavy traffic...so I couldn't find any wild animal. Weekends also see heavy traffic.
Yes that is also true. But summer time we can see animals after 3 pm

Oh God, the forest seems to be completed denuded of green. Leafless dead trees, dry forest floor and no way for the animals to hide themselves. Very sad! The 360° camera effect is not helping either, has a dizzying effect.
July to December very greenery in this route
Bro, during summer/ autumn, it is normal for Mudumalai n Bandipur to lose their green cover. Once the monsoon sets in June, the sanctuaries will get their fresh green cover back. One rain is enough for the forests to get back their greenery.

Bro, there's nothing dangerous.. it's just that people coming from the plains n not used to hills driving keep flaunting as if it's a gr8 achievement. Am a native of Ooty n currently residing in Bangalore n keep travelling regularly in this road. Also it's heights of stupidity to stop near wild animals as they are unpredictable n can attack any moment. I've had close encounters with elephants, bisons n bears on this very route many a times. Please avoid stopping to take close shots as it will endanger your own precious lives. Good videography though n my appreciation to u on that.!!

Very nice ! Takes me back to my beautiful memory of staying at Masinagudi in a resort for 2 days, about 10 years ago. I could sight a herd of deer, a bison, a big hare, a tiger at night crossing the road & elephants (with one charging our car) across the road and near moyar river (which runs adjacent to the resort at Masinagudi). Early mornings and late evenings are best time to spot animals. Actually, the forest is very dense and green in winter plus scary at night ! But a must visit place...:-))

If you like adventure stay, you may stay in mudumalai or masinagudi. You can stay ooty itself and going to mudumalai for sight seeing purpose. My recomendation you may stay at mudumalai
