    I sitting here crying. I was very fortunate as a young guitarist to have been invited by my guitar playing uncle George to see Michael Hedges play at one of his last performances before his tragic death. Mike's playing reminds me so much of Hedges' virtuoso musicianship which transcend the specific instrument they play. As someone who considered himself more than competent in my day I am humbled by such talent and dedication to the instrument. Thank you both so much the opportunity to have those memories and emotions reignited after so many years. And thank you Mike for your accomplishments and striving to go beyond the normal stomping grounds of guitar technique.

    Mike Dawes is an amazing guitar player, but one thing I noticed about Michael's playing is that he attacked the guitar with such passion and fluidity. That's part of what separates him from the rest of us. I saw Michael live three times, once at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, and then twice, two nights in a row in Mancos, Colorado in '96. _Keep_ banging on the guitar! ;) No, really, just beautiful. And I so appreciate your taking the time to show what you are doing so those of us at varying miles behind you can try to learn and find some level of application. And all of us can benefit as listeners, able to better appreciate how many things you're doing at once to create such beautiful sound for us to enjoy.

    Thanks for mensioning Michael Hedges, he sort of invented this kind of playing or at least took it to another level. Michael is one of my absolute favorite guitarr heroes.

    I was taught guitar in the 90’s by one of the early pioneers of this style, an amazing human being called Eric Roche. If you don’t know him, definitely google him! He sadly left us early having been struck by cancer. He is someone who deserves a lot of recognition for his contribution to this style.

    • @jiros00
      @jiros00 2 роки тому +4

      Wow. What an honour. I've heard Roche. Amazing player. I think he called his style 'violent acoustic' from memory. I didn't know he'd passed away. Very sad May he rest in peace.

      @kiru_r 2 роки тому +3

      @@jiros00 He was such a generous and lovely guy. I remember he would watch me running scales on my unplugged strat and say “wow, I wish I could do that!” because he was very much an acoustic guy. I’m thinking “you can’t be serious! You’re Eric Roche!” but he had a way of encouraging and seeing the best in everyone. It is so sad he’s gone as I am sure he had his best still in him.

      @@socblue1844Sorry I didn’t mean to say “what about so and so” at all so my apologies for any misunderstanding. Mike Dawes is awesome and taken it to a whole new level. I’m just highlighting the history of his unique style and share some history that not many people know. I’m sure Mike Dawes would be the first person to honour the people who came before him and walked that path. I’m also sure Mike knows Eric’s work well as he mentions his name briefly at some point in the video. Mike if you are reading this feel free to chime in!

    Such a great performance of All Along the Watchtower. I love all the subtle variety in the textures, so the chord progression doesn't sound the same twice. I really enjoyed this interview/performance.

    Shamed to admit I'd never heard of Mike before - brilliant arrangements, and I'm so entirely jealous of those "spider fingers"! Thanks Rick - you've been my lifeline to some amazing talent and beautifully artistic musicians that I've missed over the last couple decades. I grew up in awe of guys like Yngwie, Al DiMeola, Greg Howe, Jason Becker, Vai, Satriani, and a whole slew of other shredders and pure guitarists, but I fell away from it. Since I came across your channel, I've heard about Tosin, Tim Henson, Misha, Mike Dawes and along the way learned to truly appreciate some of the old greats before my time, like Joe Pass, and through it all I got to watch you looking like a kid in a candy store while you interviewed some of these people or talked about your favorites. I appreciate you Rick. I'm just one of many, I'm sure, to say thank you. Sincerely, thank you. You're a blessing to so many of us. Your joy, talent and knowledge comes through clear.

    There's half an hour I wish could have gone on for another 2 hours! Great interview (as always) Rick and Mike's playing always feels so intimate. Amazing technique but not too 'showy', every thing he does has a place in, and is integral to, the tune to enhance his interpretation and isn't added "just because he can". A very genuine guy who obviously works hard at his craft yet (and as an ex-pat Brit myself can identify with the self- deprecating humour) still manages to have a laugh at himself .

    Another great video! Mike Dawes is absolutely amazing. It was great that he brought up Michael Hedges. I saw Hedges play one of his last gigs at The Bottom Line in Manhattan. His performance was electrifying! At the end of one song, Ritual Dance maybe, a guy jumped out of his seat like a rocket and yelled because he was so excited. We all felt the same way.
