  • A restored LP cut, "The Croppy Boy", from the album, "I Chose the Green", sung by the incomparable Anne Byrne, circa 1967. On this album, Anne Byrne was backed in vocals and instrumentals by Paddy Roche and Mick Crotty.
The video features pictures from the album as well as incorporating video footage from Anne's live performance of "The Croppy Boy" at the Abbey Tavern in Dublin County, recorded sometime in the 1960's. The sound from the studio album was used to overdub the live performance for portions of this video.

I came across this song reading James Joyces's Ulysses and decided to check it out on UA-cam. Glad I did. It's a sad but beautiful song.

This is the best rendering of the Croppy that I have ever heard. Anne Byrne has a beautiful voice and she does justice to a great song.

What a fantastic voice . Wonderful rendition . I see it was recorded about 52 years ago and I can't believe I've never heard of Anne Byrne .

That is indeed very sad news. She was a true legend in traditional Irish music.

Is this taken originally from The Rafters Ring at the Abbey Tavern 1965? I had that LP which was bought from the Tavern on a night when Anne was not singing, but two Australian girls were singing. I was told that the voices of the Australian Girls were actually better than Anne on the LP. Very pure and sweet, I was told. But no idea who those Aussie singers were. Must have been there just on that occasion. I would really like to own a copy of all the music on that LP. Rebel songs. My 1st introduction to Irish music which my 5th generation Irish soul heard. I feel it all still.

Thanks for sharing your experience. This cut, "The Croppy Boy" is taken from the "I Chose the Green" album. There is a version of "The Croppy Boy" on the album, "The Rafters Ring at the Abbey Tavern" - but not sung by Anne Byrne - but by the Ludlow Trio. I've uploaded that version to UA-cam as well at ua-cam.com/video/DnxmapTmUuQ/v-deo.html

Great song, great singer but not the Croppy boy. Good men and true in this house who dwell. Sung by my good 100 year old Wexford friend, and his son Rob, is he real thing. Not a pop song.🤐🤐🤐🤐🤐🤐🤐🤐

It's certainly not the version that floats in and out of Joyce's Sirens episode, but a very trenchant rendering withall.
