  • This is a very thorough breakdown of my fight with Corey Guns at the world famous underground fight club, Streetbeefs. From a tactical standpoint and a storytelling standpoint this fight is one of the greatest and most underrated fights in Streetbeef's history, in my very biased opinion.

    Question for Viewers: Have you watched this fight? Do you think the decision was right?

    • @driver3899
      @driver3899 5 років тому +19

      I have watched it a bunch of times, never picked up on a few things though until seeing this breakdown, eg like the superman punch/mansac crunch combo.
      I also thought 100% you had drilled that body shot from the clinch where you had his opposite side hand.
      5:31 I was curious why that body shot landed because it looked he should have been able to see it coming for days but it makes now I know you did a faint to the right first. Shows the power setting up your strikes can have.
      lastly I didnt know you could ropeadope someone on the ground from the bottom by weighing 60lbs less than them haha. You need to be given purprle belt for this.
      I am surprised it was controversial who won, didn't keep score but vast majority of significant strikes landed were yours, even in the second round. He was pretty badass though, I respect the hell out of those kicks he threw in the opening minute and also for not reacting after that lumberjack leg kick you gave him.

    • @Jenjak

      I'd give him the round 2 because you cracked his nuts, and this hard to recover from that...( By the way, don't you guys wear cups ?!) But you had better cardio, better technique and you were smaller, so overall, I think you deserved the win.

    This video has to be in the top 1% of my favorite fight training videos on YT. This level of self analysis and instruction for viewers is very rare. I don't know why more fighters who also instruct or run their own schools don't do this.
    As for the fight results, you won the fight in absolute terms. You would have finished earlier without rounds and time limits with your superior endurance and energy management.
    I don't know what the rules are for street beefs. I would understand giving Cory the 2nd round for the groin shot if that's what the rules clearly dictated, but that would be victory by technical foul. Not to take anything from Corey, he has lots of heart and will likely improve if he continues training and learning from his mistakes. I would be nervous about a re-match if I were you.

    • @hard2hurt
      @hard2hurt  5 років тому +13

      Many of the more proficient fighters that I know, the pros and what not, generally don't have a lot of ability (or interest) in really explaining in depth what was going on at the time. Sometimes I think they have trouble with honestly assessing themselves, and other times I think they might have been operating more on instinct and training then thought out strategy. I've always had a little more interest than talent, and a little more knowledge than skill. I probably should have been a commentator rather than trying to fight myself.

    • @RicoMnc
      @RicoMnc 5 років тому +2

      @@hard2hurt No, you are very good at both. I think you are comparing your perfect plan with the actual execution. That doesn't match up for anyone, except maybe for Henry Cejudo, he has a gold medal in case you didn't know.
      And wow, you requested fights with guys 200+ lbs? And I'm assuming these street beef guys all have some training and experience. Very ballsy, but you obviously have the skills to do it.
      "a little more interest than talent, and a little more knowledge than skill" we have that in common, except add "very" in front of the little. You give me hope.

    • @dakaodo
      @dakaodo 2 роки тому +1

      @@hard2hurt 2 years after the comment, apologies. :) You described one of the things I've found about myself as well -- more interest than ability/talent; more knowledge than skill as you said. I can do a decent post-game analysis on fights I'm in or that I watch, and that has helped me to coach others. Skill sets that I'm weak on (including grappling) tend to get my frustration and embarrassment going more, heart rate goes higher, and compounds the lack of knowledge to observe myself or get any useful lessons out of a fight round. That gives me some obvious stuff to work on, and learning about wrestling has been a big complement to my striking.
      I found that this analytical mindset and approach to fighting made it relatively more difficult for me to relate to many students or training partners, who do respond more to repping out drills until they burn in the muscle memory. They then fight more from intuition using those learned responses, and it's hard for me to communicate how they can train up from there. It's been 20 years, so I've figured out and learned from others a few teaching tools, but it's still a fun, sometimes difficult challenge.
      I love the glimpses you provide into training, sparring, fighting, and the thinking behind each component.

    Man, I hate to be that guy who says "You should have done this or that", (especially since you did a great job nullifying the size and strength advantage). It's easy to watch and analyze and it's hard to improvise and come up with your next move in the heat of the moment. So, I recognize that. However, I also recognize that you probably posted your analysis to get a conversation going. So, here we are. There are a couple high level things I'd like to point out:
    Half way through the video you mention using the cross-face collar tie(6:38), early in the fight you should have framed with the cross-face collar tie while you were on the ground(2:52). It's easy to put on and it provides really good protection against the left side and would have kept him from immobilizing your arm while he was going for that Americana. Lots of options from there. (transition to full guard, sweep, etc.)
    Leaping left body shot is very cool. That little slippy cover-up you do prior is interesting.
    Kick into superman is a technique that I can tell you've drilled a million times, so nobody blames you for following the kick to the nuts with the punch. It's second nature to you now and you probably didn't realize until after the fact that you kicked his sack. I know the feeling.
    9:39 This combination was super effective against him. Well done.
    When you took his back, you were in a good position to finish the fight, but looks like you ran out of time. I've heard you go on about having poor Jiu Jitsu, why not focus on it so you can capitalize on things like back position without taking up too much time?
    Once again, it's easy for me to point things out as the guy watching and analyzing. It's hard AF in the moment to always do exactly the right thing.
    Well fought Icymike, I like that you don't back down and you put your skills/reputation etc. on the line to show the world that you know what you're doing. I have a lot of respect for that.
    My questions for you: I know you mentioned you wanted to fight someone bigger than you, but when you were faced with it, did you second guess yourself? Did you think to yourself "man, what have I gotten myself into?".

    • @hard2hurt
      @hard2hurt  5 років тому +34

      Yes. He started moving much faster and more intently than I had imagined he would and he distributed his weight well when he was on top. I remember getting up and thinking "No more mistakes." but during the first round I was definitely having an "oh shit" moment. It was not going how I imagined it would and the lighting played a HUGE role. He was moving faster than I had prepared for so I sort of second guessed my striking... which was fine as I didn't really want to kick until after he was tired but for sure it was terrifying.

    It is so fucking cool that a self defense guy on youtube actually shows us his fights and doesn't just talk the talk. Mad respect for you man. There's no doubt in my mind that your advice would work in real situations. If you're in SoCal, would love to come train with you sometime! I started striking training (muy thai and boxing) at a local MMA gym 2 months ago and you seem to really be well versed in muy thai.

    Do you think the Superman followed by left would have ko’d a guy your size? Seemed to me this was a great example of how size does and doesn’t “matter” in a fight. You had the skills and conditioning to clearly win the decision and it seems like you could have gone for a choke several times if BJJ was more core for you but didn’t drop him w your big bombs. Your aggressive clinch seemed to be functional against bigger man which was impressive.
    What are some other thoughts about “weight classes” in real life. And huge props for doing the do in a known fight club and posting it. I don’t see a lot of instructors doing that. Final ? How would you say this guy (and some of the other SB regulars) rates as average joe who gets in bar/bully fights for fun?

    my jujitsu coach actually taught me this one, when he goes over techniques he shows us the way to use it for jujitsu and then he shows us other uses for the technique. he shows us an arm drag with the same kind of trap you used then he told us if its mma or a striking situationthe uppercut on that side is way open. I was actually hyped when i saw you do it and get back to the clinch

      @@pierrebridenne8870 , the only thing that was illegal about Kimbo slices fights were they were fighting for money without being sanctioned. You can hold unsanctioned fights without charging people or paying fighters, gyms all over legally have whats commonly called "smokers". The argument can be made that what Kimbo Slice was doing wasnt a street fight since it was a prearranged prize fight, often people would intervene when rules were broken..ie breaking the clinch and not allowing ground fighting.
