I usually watch your videos to learn about new concepts and ideas in fields completely unrelated to what I do, so this is the first time I actually watched a topic on something related to my field of study and work (Computer Engineering). And it has been such a great experience to see how elegantly you guys approached some of the concepts I've been trying to explain family and friends many times (because the question "so what exactly do you do?" or "how do computers actually work?" naturally pop). This gave me a very unique perspective on how much "simplification" is actually done on the subject to fit in a video, and how accurately and brilliantly the essence of the topic is captured. I already had a great level of respect for all the hard work that's being put in these videos, but it just went to the next level. Thanks for all the awesome work in educating the world.
I am a computer engineer as well and just a huge tech nerd in general. I can relate so much to spending hours on end explaining to my family how computers work but to no avail. I've had to explain to my grandmother multiple times what the volume buttons do on her phone
and today, 9 years later, google just launched Willow - a quantum chip capable of doing in less than 5 minutes what a classical supercomputer would take 10^25 years (10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 years). that is longer than the age of our universe. insane times.
"Right now, we don't know if quantum computers will be just a specialized tool, or a big revolution for humanity" Its quantum, it's gonna be both things at once.

I first watched this video several years ago when I was in high school fascinated with the subject of quantum computing. Currently, I have been doing research over the past year pertaining to quantum mechanics and computing at UT Austin. I come back to this video every so often to see how my understanding of the topics mentioned has evolved over time.
Hi.. can you suggest some books or websites which you refer to do your research. I'm actually very new to this concept and would like to deep dive into this and I'm very confused at the moment and i don't know where to actually start from. Thank you very much. I'd like to share my mail ID if you're open for any conversation.
Even though I studied Quantum physic and also IT as a major, during my last years at university, this one is the hardest episode of all for me. And I cannot even have help from my parents, who are IT teachers. But I WILL understand it. Or not, at the same time.
This makes me so nostalgic. To see how far we have come, yet to see how you both always had this level of quality as well as managed to maintain it for so long~
Don't worry, most of it is theory, AKA bullshit. Qbits are just going up and to the left on a curve all at the same time. Unless it's going right and down. Which might ACTUALLY be orbiting, other shit. Like I said it's a theory.
I came to this video confident I'd learn something about quantum computers. I left this video confident that I'd never learn anything about quantum computers.
So there will be THREE VIDEOS in total in December. This was #1. The next one will be released next Tuesday. Check the channel more often than usual in the next few weeks. Not all transistors are so small. It depends on electric current which should go through them. So transistors in computer memory can be very small, but transistors used for switching electric current in your electrobike are much much bigger.
All that proves is that it's a pipe dream. Or that those that actually know what they're doing, aren't making videos about it and aren't communicating with those that are, and those that are should stfu.
Me at the beginning: lets see if I can contribute to Cyber world with some of my out of the box ideas Me at the end of video: well I love my job as a carpenter
Dear Kurzgesagt, I have a humble request to you guys. I am a Kurzgesagt subscriber and follower for quite some time. I enjoy each and every topic you guys cover up in your videos. I also read the books you guys share with us. Although this is the first time I am having a hard time understanding a video topic. This is an interesting topic. I really wanna know in depth about it. It is going to be awesome if you guys come up with a new video related to this topic or even a whole series of videos. I really think there are people who will agree with this idea. A series of quantum theory is a great new topic to start. I really hope you guys read this comment and give it a think.
2:30 Don't you just hate it when you're having a conversation with someone only to have them blurt out nonsense and start rapidly melting into the 5th dimension?
Fun fact about CPU transistors: You keep hearing the term "(X)nm transistors" in Intel/AMD chips, but many people don't know what that means. The 'nm' is nanometer, which is used in microscopic measurements, so that means transistors are exceedingly small these days... The Apple Silicon chips have 5 nanometer transistors and Apple says they're developing 2 nanometer ones right now. Let's make this simple, how thick is a strand of hair in nanometers? About 90,000... Substantial number, yes? Now, how thick is a single strand of DNA? 0.90 nanometers... Right now, we are on the verge of making transistors smaller than DNA, meaning they are already smaller than the cells that make up the human body... Let that sink in!
You got it very close, it is the internet, analysed by big quantum computers to find out about our knowledge, species and psychology. It happens secretly.
“Today a typical scale for transistors is 14 nanometers.” Checks the date: Oh it was released in 2015. The current iPhone has 5 nanometers technology. We’re almost there.
@@dodominoe4461 transistors nm name varies by producer, some producer do use the actual value of nm, while some other manufacturers use the equivalent size of a planar transistor, not actual size
Not exactly, the most difficult part of quantum computing is actually operating them. They can successfully create multi qbit processors and supercool them to run effectively but they are having trouble with the programming. Right now they have to be programmed using complex algorithms just to actually get usable information out of them, and each different problem being computed must be individually programmed. Right now lockheed martin is using a 512qbit D-wave 2 and google is using an experimental 1024(i think)qbit D-wave 2. At this point they have not been able to compute anything complex, accurately or on a repeatable basis so it's still very early days. But I honestly think this is next stage in human advancement without a doubt.
+Tom Jones Well hopefully IBM Watson wont get his filthy magical "hands" on it. Or well have ourselfes skynet in no time. Srsly Watson is like the best AI yet. Im shure if the people in google gave him the info he needs to basically operate and programm an quantum computer hed be able to programm anything they would throw at him. ( cause he learns. Like for real unlike android . I know that thjat isnt true but i mean if he has alot of trial and error experiences hed maybe be able to make programs quick enought ) Wow im a programmer and looking at this its almost just bullshit. Im gonna post it anyways

This is by far the best explanation of quantum computing I have seen. I just watched the IBM "5 levels of difficulty" which is interesting but doesn't even begin to provide the information that is contained in this video. Great job - please produce more of these for different subjects!
Since this video has been released, transistors have decreased in size furthermore. An iPhone XS or later has a transistor size of 7 nm, which was pretty revolutionary since it was one of the only devices to be mass-produced with such an architecture. In the past year, however, 7 nm transistors are becoming more prevalent in PCs. In 2019, 5 nm technology has become commercialized, though not on a massive scale. Even now, Samsung has announced they plan to commercialize 3 nm technology. The important thing to note here is that we design these transistors often decades before they become commercial. For example, 10 nm technology was first designed in the 1980s before being created in 2002 and commercialized in 2016. Currently, the smallest transistor created is at 2.3 nm, which may signal that we are at an end for transistors, considering how the disparity between the size of created transistors and the size of commercialized transistors has diminished greatly. Currently, some major nanotech research firms have considered 14-angstrom transistors (14Å, one angstrom is 10^-10 meters, 1 ten-billionth), which is about half the width of a DNA helix, by around 2025. However, whether or not we will be able to actually realize this is up for debate for the reasons mentioned in this video.
@@tuxedo_productions Dude thanks for this. It's so frustrating seeing everyone just type a bunch of bullshit in the comments. I get Kurzgesagt tries to aim for the lowest common denominator and there are better channels for scientific discussion but it's still disappointing nonetheless. The fact you have two douchebags here saying "too long" and "I couldn't read all this" is awful. I can somewhat wrap my head around the concepts in this video but I _completely_ fail to understand why the fuck someone would fail to read something, then spend the time and energy expressing that they didn't read it. TL;DR You're awesome and thanks for having something to teach us (which should be why we're all here). If anyone's interested, one of the concepts being discussed in the video and in your comment is called Moore's Law.
In case you missed it, 1:53 is a reference to the stop-motion film by IBM Research titled “A Boy and His Atom”. It was made by moving carbon monoxide molecules with a scanning tunneling microscope.

Just tell her that scientists are learning how to manipulate the unique mathematical properties of Psi (the symbol used to denote the wavestate of a quanta, or even discrete group of quanta) to cheat universe by selling precision for speed, then cheating it back again the opposite way and making a profit twice in order to feed everyone with a few loaves of bread and a couple fish. It's kinda a bastardization of buying options, short selling and leveraging market speculation, but with the tiniest pieces of reality. And bizarrely enough it turns out that our universe actually does work that way? (Yes, I'm hideously oversimplifying and making broken metaphors, but what do you expect with a subject this complex.) Apparently God was a Capitalist with Socialist ambitions.

+fidel diaz no, the algorithm is self-adjusting so that the difficulty of the hashes will increase to keep the rate at which hashes are found constant.
+fidel diaz I think the day the first quantum computer is used for Bitcoin Mining, the Bitcoin amount will reach it's max capacity (which is installed to prevent inflation) so whoever turns this thing on will have all remaining Bitcoins. As Bitcoins would then become "rare" their value would increase significantly.
just to be a nerd, a quantum graphics card would not really work very well or even be really practical. it would make more sense to make a quantum cpu. but even then it still wouldnt a massive change. sadly quantum computers and gaming dont really work well together.

Like the way pistons actually extend in 2 gameticks even though everyone thought it was 3, but they wait 1 gametick before extending if powered by a self-converting piston extension (aka block 36). But it also can seem like 3 gameticks because certain tile-tick blocks like repeaters lose 1 gametick of delay when activated by a player input

I don't think there are any quantum computers that can run windows at this stage.
D-Wave doesn't count because it's not a true QC.

Edit: 1.5k likes?!? Why?!
Xp Level Googolplex watch some of Myren Eario’s videos (especially the one about precise piston timings) and you’ll realize that Minecraft’s code fore redstone can feel complex enough to be like quantum mechanics.
