There's a ridiculous variant from (I think) one of the Japanese manufacturers, in UK at least, where the wheels are driven by electric only (great), and the petrol engine cuts in when the battery gets below a certain level - fine, like a range extender; but this variant _can't_ be charged by plugging it in: so, the only way to get energy into this variant is via the fuel filler - in other words, it's a petrol-only car. (They don't even do a Diesel version.)

Mild hybrid really shouldn't be classed as a hybrid. They're just a fancy stop start system where the electric motor alone can't move the car.
