I have a new channel called Guitars and Gizmos ua-cam.com/channels/NGf3Mt-ToiFzPqVZNl9WwQ.html. It's about my hunt for great guitar tone. Come on over :-)
Your lead style is very melodic. Apologies to any "shredders" who might be reading this, but I gotta say, I would much rather hear lead guitar as a melodic instrument. It sounds more musical.
Slick Continental Dude Even now it could be. To be clear, I'm not crazy about the sweep-picking and cramming 100 notes into 3 seconds, but playing "fast" isn't necessarily bad.
Perhaps in the 1800 hundreds....this would always have been considered melodic playing since the dawn of the electric guitar- as evidenced by the playing of Les Paul, who was one of the first popularize the electric guitar.....hell he arguably invented the electric guitar... its unfair to compare to any eras earlier then WW2 as the electric guitar was not invented at that point - and comparing electric to acoustic playing styles .....well thats like comparing a classic typewriter to a modern pc/word processor..both can potentially write the next literature masterpiece in the right hands - but you cannot really compare the two, as they are different animals...
From Leo: Your dates are not quite right, I like Les Paul as as much as anyone and the model named after him is pretty popular with some people. Kay guitars offered an electric guitar as a standard catalog item in 1936, well before Les Paul was involved with Gibson. And I might add that Seth Lover did not invent the Humbucker, that patent was given to a man in South Bend, Indiana who figured out that double windings could cancel out hum in an inductive pickup. Les Paul and Seth Lover were certainly contributors and had a hand in refining, but neither were founders.
The 59 is great if you want to keep a bit of that Strat or Tele character. But I’m a rocker through and through so I went with the Hot Rails for both guitars. I think it makes the guitar very versatile. Hendrix on the neck, Stevie Ray in the neck/middle, Clapton in the middle and Iron Maiden in the bridge.
The 59 sounds very throaty/emotional. And holds onto the breakup threshold better than the hot rails. I have both of them. I like all of my Seymour’s. Different flavors for different moods. Great playing and thanks for putting so much into this demo.
Easily the best pickup demo I've ever seen on youtube. It's not even close. Your tone is amazing and so is your playing. Keep doing what you're doing! (:
Hi, I ended up with the Hotrails in this guitar as I felt it was more dynamic, and had more punch. Over a traditional strat bridge pickup, this is definitely more versatile. I'm not going back. I am wondering about testing the lil'59 in the bridge position of a Telecaster. I think it might do a good job there... We'll see :-)
Personally I really love the lil 59. Its a great pup. Especially in the neck tapped with a nice vintage in the middle. I used to be a big fan of the Hotrail. I actually grew more partial to the coolrail. its a bit less chunky, at some point has a nice creamy crisp tone. But also very sweet when tapped. Great for clean and dirty. I think you would dig it.
I also felt the HotRail sounded sweeter than the lil 59, I have been considering the lil 59 or the CoolRail for my KitCaster which has the Fender Tex-Mex pups in it, but most comments are for the HotRail. According to SD literature, the CoolRail Bridge pairs well with single coil pickups........ flipping a coin
I just put in the Little '59 bridge in my '87 MIJ Strat with Kahler tree (System 1) - nice coincidence! Great guitar but the original pickups were unusable, so I swapped them in ~1989. Put a tele bridge pickup at the neck, Lace Sensor in middle and Broadcaster bridge pickup at the bridge. Just died, 30 years ain't so bad. Love the Little '59. Great sound - very melodic!
I just ordered a SD Hot Rail for the bridge of my build, was surfing vids on the pick up and came across this here vid.. kinda had me second guessing my choice, l do prefer the lil 59 bridge with clean tones.. it did seem more expressive with a simply sweeter tone, however l play with gain in most of my song choices and believe l made the right choice.. the Hot Rail had a very "Santana" PRS smoothness to it with OD.. LOVED IT ALL! I love finding lil hidden gems like this vid out of the unexpected blue..Thanks!!
I have the 59s in the neck and bridge positions on my 1999 American made Fender Stratocaster. I really like them. I get a great tone for soft playing and a nice solid blues tone when I want to jam. They guitar still has the "STRAT" sound and to get the more single coil "banjo" sound I just add the standard strat middle pick up to the mix. The stock pick ups hummed and had too much feed back and I couldn't enjoy playing. Now I'm a happy man.
Beautiful playing, Sir! I appreciate that you gave a demonstration of both clean chorded sounds, as well as some lead. But seriously, such a lovely progression and tasteful lead melody. YOU'RE A MONSTER! ;)
Thanks for doing this video! It's very well done and straight to the point with a good example from each pickup on clean/dirty. To top it all off, you're pretty darn good
Great video, thanks for posting. I hope Seymour Duncan sort you out with some freebies in return for helping a bunch of figure out which pickups to go for.
So, you kept the Rails installed. You seemed more inspired and melodic with them. Ideas and Notes flowed. I could tell you where hearing something...feeling something. My Godin Artisan ST has Godin branded, SD Hot Rails and I love them with coil tap wiring. Everyone imaginable but smooth delivery.
Man those bends with the hot rail with distortion were something man and I think the high end of the hot rails in general was but I’d take the 59 personally the tone is my style
Hello After your demo I.m still hesitate ??? For playing Led Zeppelin guns and roses ??? Which one is the best for you ??? The most noiseless of them ?? Thank you for this video !
Hi, Nice Sounding Guitars. I was thinking exactly the same setup for my strat, Little '59 (Bridge) + Vintage Noisless (Neck). I don't wanna pay extra for the middle noisless, hum bothers me though.. are you getting lots of it?
Hi this video is 8 years old. I no longer have this guitar and I'm afraid I don't quite remember. I think I found that none of these two pickups tested here where optimal for the sounds I'm after.
@@thoroliversenmusic Completely understand, I've just started researching pickup options for my build in progress. I'm not great at finding the right pickups. However, usually anything that George Lynch promotes I'm happy with.
What a wonderful piece of music ! Is the hot rails getting with some hiss when you put the overdrive ?! I got Texas special on an American standard I want to keep the middle and the neck .. now what you think of the best combination to still have a nice Strat timber .. and handle as good as well High gain (most likely overdrives) for lead ... ? SD JB JR/ Hot Rail/The 59 ?
Hi thanks for you nice comment. I'm afraid it has been eight years since I did this video. I don't have this guitar anymore and I can't remember if there were any hiss. I think I learned that I prefer a Strat with a pure single coil config (SSS), so I wouldn't be the best to guide you on your question. For me today, I'd look for a single coil pickup for the bridge position that has a less spiky character. Perhaps with a base plate to round of the high freq. Good luck on your hunt for tone :-)
@@thoroliversenmusic My Strat has Lil 59 on the bridge, but my wiring lets me use this pickup as a single coil with Tone2 set fully clockwise, as a humbucker with Tone 2 fully counterclockwise, or anything in between with Tone 2 set at any intermediate position like from 2 to 8. This way pickup selector at position 1 makes the guitar sound from brilliant single coil all the way to fatter tone of this small Seymour Duncsn humbucker. Tone 1 controls the tone of the guitar in all positions. Pickup selector at position 2 makes Lil 59 act as a single coil, in opposite phase to middle pickup. This way my Strat sounds very much the same as a normal Stratocaster unless I set Tone 2 back with Pickup Selector at position 1. Very happy because I gained some new interesting sounds without losing all the original sounds, but I always bring with this guitar the original bridge Fender bridge p.u. just in case.
I love this video. I have a strat plus and I want to change the pickups>> I like the hot rail on the bridge. What are you using on the neck and middle pickup?? Thanks, Mark
M Farrar Thanks :-) Unfortunately I don't have this guitar anymore, and don't remember the exact brand - but they were pretty standard strat single coil neck and middle pup's.
Every rail type pu I've tried I just hate the somewhat harsh sounding high end. I've tried just about all of them. It's the ceramic magnets. Alnico magnets always have a sweeter high end. I settled on the Fender Lace Sensor blue (neck) and silver (middle) w a full size JB in the bridge. Try them out. They are very under rated. The Lace use alnico mags and you can hear it. Just my opinion. Nice vid.
The little 59 sounds a lot smoother to me and it sounded as if it had more balance than the hot rails. I'd go with the little 59 as it's meant to recreate the tone of the 1959 Gibson les paul. I think little 59 definitely does recreate that classic amazing tone. The hot rails are still great. This is just my oppinion.
Hot rails are fun, I have used them before, and while they have their place, they are marketed to kids playing cheap solid state amps in a bedroom setting..
I really liked the little 59' better until that hot rail was coil tapped and then I thought it sounded exactly like a strat pickup where the little 59' was always a little hotter and had more bite. But I still liked the little 59' better just because Stratocaster bridge pickups are always so under powered. Great video, and great playing!
I came listen the pickups, but your song made me stay, amazing skill, amazing tone. I have a question, can you tell what kind of pots are you using, 250, 500, 1M?
my final decision on this is: dimarzio does single sized humbucker thing better... I recommend the protrack , it is rather low output though... Tone Zone S is good, I am thinking Air Zone S could be great
Hi thanks, you can find the detail in the description under the video, but it is a Fender Stratocaster (MIJ) 1986 w/orig. Kahler tremolo system. Playing through a Genz Benz Black Pearl 30 amp.
Lil'59 is articulate but no sustain. Do not know why... Hot rails, although they have strong magnets there, just have more sustain and a fatter tone and higher output. I will go for hot rails...
Hi Mark, thank you for your nice words :-) Not sure if I understand your question correctly, but if the pickup height is adjusted to balance the output of the other pickups it won't be a problem. ‘59 all the way. The hot rail was too brittle.

Beautiful Music, Mid tones is What I like the most of de lil 59! Great video Thanks!
This OD type of sound isn't my piece of cake, but the sound of the Seymour Duncan sounds awesome, I love it big time!!! Thanks for the demo!!!
IMO the Hotrail sounds fuller but with no soul. Like the lil '59 better.
WOW!!! By far the best display of the lil '59 I've seen yet. Awesome job!! Thank you!!
Dude your playing is awesome!! Didn't skeot the intro at all, i loved it.

Coil tap does a great single-coil strat pu sound, too. very nice job of catching those tonal differences with minimum effects.

The setup and editing off this video is amazing along with the playing, thats hard to find on UA-cam
This is actually a great guitar lesson! I slowed this down and learned your progression, which is very nice by the way.
Beautiful playing Thor - I am now sold on the Lil59 I think :-)

Man i just live how raw this is!
Do you think it would make a good combination with stock mid dle and neck Fender Texas Special pickups?
just listening to you is a real vibe. such feel, amazing. i love your modded strat as well brother
This was very good of you to share. Helpful. Very nice playing, btw!
What a fantastic video! Well Done....excellent playing and touch!
Wow, what a great player you are, very expressive! Also a very good recording as well but I got lost listening to you play and forgot about the test!

great video, music and performance... thanks!
Screw the pickups. This video is amazing!!!
I love the playing my friend. I thought I wanted a Little 59, but the hot rails pickup actually sounds better to me.
Nice playing, big fan! May I ask is it 250k ot 500k pots in your strat with Lil59? Or do you use both and a stacked ton pot? Thanks a lot!
An old 80s Japan stratocaster with basswood body and Kahler Spider bridge?
Very well made video, thanks! Great sound and fantastic playing, really lets the pickups shine through.
that clean tone is heaven , .......and i thougt a twin sounded clean, what an amp ,woaw !

I'm working on a custom guitar that is Mahogany/Rosewood. Would a Lil Screamin Demon / Duckbucker / Lil 59 work well in this guitar?

Enjoyed this. Music MOST important, electronics to enhance great sound.
Could you set the hot rails on the neck with the 59 in the middle position?
I’m fairly sure they make separate bridge/middle/neck versions but you’d have to check the Seymour Duncan site to be sure. Cheers

How much volume difference is between let's say a stock fender neck single coil and a bridge lil 59 or hotrail?
Very nice different stile and sound!!!

Did you end up choosing one? If so, which? Would love to hear your thoughts and experience with these. Thanks!
but what pickup are we hearing, you told all but the most important things..
