As a photography teacher, I’d actually recommend you bring the better camera and have your F stop at a high number with a slow shutter speed to balance it out and then play with you ISO last until the northern lights are the color/ vibrancy that shows up nicely. You can do it Michele! Also, you may want to just bring a portable phone charger so you can at least use it. Can’t wait to see what you do on your trip!❤

Hi Michele, don’t worry too much, when you go dog sledding, they will outfit you with appropriate gear for the wind chill, but obviously some good warm clothing underneath will be helpful. You will see the Northern Lights from your igloo; but for all of the outings the outfitters will provide appropriate gear for all the activities. Your warms clothes, jackets and personal gear will serve you well as you move from your igloo to the main lodge. If you are uncertain you can always check with the hotel.

    Some tips from a local:
Pay attention to the boot soles; they have to be grippy in snow and ice. Use stud covers if needed.
Don't get too small boots; the extra room inside keeps your toes warm.
Use ✨reflectors✨ on your clothing in dark. Or what we call in Finland, the cheapest life insurance.
Welcome and have a great trip! ❄️

Finnish person living in Copenhagen here. Regarding you filming gear, the biggest problem is most likely not the battery life but the functionality of the devices. I just came back from spending Christmas in Finland and my phone basically stopped working in -4 fahrenheit. So keep your devices warm and use the for short sequences at a time. Also when filming northern lights have google to get advice to get right kind of settings as they dont replicate well on film and video.

Your winter clothing haul is Finn approved! But yes your iPhone is gonna shut down if you keep it out for more than a few minutes at a time, it is what it is 😅 keep it on the inside pocket of your jacket as much as you can and/or keep one of those heating packs next to it. Your vlogging camera will probably last a bit better but extra batteries are a must.

Michele, those Uniqlo heat tech under garments are a slim fit. They're supposed to be worn close to the skin, under normal clothes (pullovers), in order to benefit from the warming properties. I was so surprised when you mentioned that you were an XXL 😮 I'm 5'8" and have a bit of an extra weight and I wear an L at Uniqlo! You should've gotten an M in everything, including tights. I never go by those sizing charts online, they are NEVER right for me (always too big, I guess they want to make sure that the garment will fit no matter what).

i vote chill paris. i went to amsterdam recently and specifically forced myself not to feel obligated to go see All The Things and just enjoy my time instead of focusing so hard of maximizing my time there, if that makes sense. and it was so lovely. really got a sense of the city. and i can always go back to do more. it was just really great and casual. even if i didn’t visit all the “must see” things. idk. felt very organic.

as someone who has lived in a very cold climate most of my life (N. MN near the border where a high of 10 below daily for weeks on end was the norm in winter) and enjoys winter sports, I don't think one needs 3 outer snow pants for a brief trip. I think 1 would be sufficient as they are outerwear and typically reworn day to day the way you do a jacket. The key is layers--a heattek/hot chilys layer against the skin, a polarfleece layer over that and a water/wind proof outer layer would be best.

Same! I spent the first 38 years of my life in Moorhead, MN and Fargo, ND. Now 47 and living on the Oregon Coast in a Temperate Zone. My grandmother always made me wear ski masks to school so I wouldn't breathe in the cold air. I was so embarrassed, but she was the oldest of 6 children and knew what she was talking about! ❤

As someone who spends a lot of time on a ski hill I highly recommend fleece leggings as a super warm base layer. You're spot on with the handwarmers and I also recommend toe warmers. They are a lifesaver and make a huge difference. Also keep in mind the wind can be a little bit brutal so make sure you have some sort of balm under your sunscreen (think gentle slugging). Have a great trip. It sounds amazing! I love Scandinavia.

    • @the_zeek_wolf
      @the_zeek_wolf 7 місяців тому

As a product manager for a ski company, I second that. You can use the hand warmers to keep your batteries warm. That’s what I do. On your chest pocket you layer the battery close to your body and the hand warmers on top; so the hand warmers keeps the outside cold temperature to recharge the battery!
Another tip; keep your socks to one layer and bring extras. It’s best that your feet stay dry. When I go out skiing at -20°C as soon as I go back in, I switch my socks. If you have too many layers of socks, than blood flow gets restricted and you get cold because blood can’t get to your toes. However, compression socks are good as they help with blood circulation. (Once again keep it to one layer!)
      Have an amazing trip❤

Lifetime skier and winter sports Canadian here. You did well. Ski gear is a great choice, as skiers sometimes have to survive extreme cold & wind over many hours. The other brand I'd recommend that I consider the most reliable, high performing is Patagonia. The only other piece of attire I'd recommend is a neoprene face covering. It protects your cheeks, nose, chin....just leaving your eyes exposed. It's an inexpensive purchase, small item to pack and a life-saver in windy conditions.

Hi Michelle, I was thinking of this this morning while I was doing my makeup getting ready for work. When you go dog sledding and engage in all your chilly Winter activities on your trip, if you wear mascara, make sure it is waterproof.
When you cover your mouth and nose with a neck warmer, &c., the hot air from your breath shoots up and likes to freeze on your eyelashes. It is a cute look until it all melts off. I have been sitting at -50C or so the last week where I live in Canada, and have been waiting to do my mascara until I am done being outside or just skipping it all together. It is just a lot less messy and easier this way. 😂😂😂

We have -22 Celcius outside now. The phone is working fine for a small period of time. I take it from my bag and put it back. If longer, it can get cold and turn off unexpectedly, espesially if it's windy. The battery is fine when it gets warm and turns on. It's not enough to put it in the pocket if it has switched off. It won't work unless you are in a warm place. But you can put it close to your body, so it gets warm. It will take at least 15 minutes to get alive again.

  • @dreicher

Looks like great clothing choices for Finland! I cannot wait to hear about your trip! I prefer shorter hip length jackets for skiing (for maximum mobility). Our family has skied for years in temperatures from 45 F to -27 F. Skiing is great exercise and you will get warm with all those layers (except the face, hands and feet which will be cold depending on temperature & humidity). Yes, those zippers in hidden places are for venting to avoid you from overheating and sweating (dangerous). As far as phone/equipment batteries being drained or not charging all the way, we keep phone on inside of our jackets/coat closest to our body. When outdoors and not doing physical exercise, I add hand warmer pack to interior pocket the phone is in and move it periodically so heat distributes evenly. It helps but unfortunately lithium batteries work best at room temperature. Take photos if video becomes and issue so you capture everything you can of this amazing trip! : )

Hi Michele -- I know you said you don't want to over-schedule your time in Paris, and as someone who travels there often, generally I would agree. But if you still want to see the Rothko exhibit at the Fondation Louis Vuitton, you may want to make an exception and buy your tickets (they are hot!) in advance. I was in Paris last month and saw the show and it is amazing. Tickets are timed-entry and I'd suggest going as early as possible (tickets start at 10:00 am) because people are slow to leave, making the museum crowded as the day goes on. Also, the museum is in an outer neighborhood and Paris traffic can be a challenge, so make sure to leave enough time to get there for your ticket entry. Your entire journey sounds extraordinary. Enjoy it all and travel safe.

I am from colder climate. It’s usual for us to have -10 Celsius, and lower. I once tried filming on iPhone with 100% initial charge when it was -10C, phone lasted for less than 5 minutes. It just completely turned off. When I went to a coffee shop, in about 10 minutes it came back to life, with about 30-40% charge. Since then I use my iPhone to just take quick pictures, and put it into a pocket quickly. I just searched, there seems to be winter thermal cases. Hmm.

Sorry also 💯 agree on MITTS. Gloves don’t cut it in Northern Canada anyway and make sure you keep your camera warm as much as you can! Also I’m sure you have checked this but some dog sledding outfits are not particularly ethical in how dogs are treated - it’s not the Disney version of dog teams - and it can be a hard lesson so just make sure you have received sound advice on where to do this. I know Finland is not Canada but just a few tips that might apply.

Something to consider too if not for this trip would be a shell (pit zips are a must) and puffy vest with breathable base layer on underneath. Keeping the wind off and core warm does wonders for keeping you warm yet manages moisture by not making you too warm and sweaty. I’m from Colorado and love snowshoeing and hiking. I love my Arcteryx shell and montbell puffy vest.

You might want to consider something like a Halo charger. They're made to live in your car and are rated for sub-zero temps. They come in all sizes from the size of your cell phone on up. Survival websites are also great places to find chargers and electronic accessories that are rated for extreme temps. All3 of my girls have multiple Halo chargers, with one specifically that stays in the trunk of their car. This week we're -20 to -40 below zero here and they've never failed to charge or lost charge on us.

I’m so excited for your trip to Finland. It is a magical place. As someone mentioned earlier, maybe pack a swimsuit for the sauna.
Also, if your schedule allows, the Louisana Museum of Modern Art is great. An hour on public transport from CPH.

We’ve been to Finland twice during thanksgiving 2019 and 2023. Last year we drove to Tromso, Norway to get on the Hurtigruten boat and it was very cold, but we had amazing northern lights. For reindeer and husky rides, organizers will offer snowsuits to add to your outfit in case it’s too cold - I think you will be great with these new acquisitions plus gloves, scarf and hat. We bought heating vests and socks, but we didn’t think it worked so well. Definitely take a tripod for the northern lights and those disposable hot hands. Contrary to what some people are saying here, iPhone does capture northern lights well, but the tripod is the key. Have a great trip!

Have a wonderful trip! FYI. When I went to Iceland, my iPhone would shutdown when I went outside. Apparently when iPhones are exposed to very cold weather, it shortens the battery life significantly and shuts down. The battery life will go back to "normal" when you are indoors or in a "warmer" area. I would not depend on your phone to vlog or take pictures when you are in Finland.

On a different note - I enjoyed your blog this morning so much, and enjoyed watching the LV show again, you made my morning! 😊 P.S. I spy the print of Alison Friend - oh my gosh, I’m obsessed with her! Me and my daughter got her prints for Christmas 😇

I think those are brilliant choices and I love the dark gray contrasting with the red bib pants. I went to school (undergrad) in Upstate NY (and grad at NYU). I spent four winters in lake-effect snow and believe me, you will need that stuff. When it is 20 below with 10 below extra wind chill, you will be the warmest people in Finland. I used a cord to string my mittens or gloves together through the arms, so the cord goes across your back and your mittens/gloves are attached and stay hanging out of your arms at the wrists, so you never lose them. I now want to see your trip and decide whether we could manage that weather after so many years in LA!

Yes the vents in the pants are if you get too hot. They are probably intended for skiing I imagine? There is NOTHING WORSE than having the weather change on you mid-day when skiing and getting way too hot and super sweaty inside your gear, vents are *essential*. I never buy ski jackets or pants that don't have thigh and armpit vents, and I use them a lot because I run hot generally.

I wear those ultra warm heattech shirts and tights underneath my normal clothes all the time in winter. I live in Northern Italy and our very old stone house is heated only by ONE woodstove. I am 158 cm/53 kg and I wear S in shirts and tights. The tights come quite big, usually I wear M in Uniqlo bottoms.

I live in Northern Norway, north of the Polar Circle. I think you’ve gotten some good clothes so far. But I would advice you to get a sweater in wool with a long neck,to have on top of your base layers. Take all your base clothes with you in your luggage,so you can put layers on layers. I can try to link to a good sweater, like the type I’m thinking of.
And food, you should try raindeer steak,it is so good. And cloudberrys,a very typical berry that one find up here in the north ❄️

Hi from Canada! I just found your channel this week and love your info and sense of humour! I lived above the Arctic circle in Canada. You need the basic Canada Goose coat that covers your butt and has a hood (we all had the red one it seemed) and overall ski pants so your back is warm (not too loose!) and sorel boots. Your under layers should not be too loose either. I know NorthFace is more economical but the Canada Goose is the quality you want and you can sell it after if you won’t be heading north again!!!

Just my opinion: it’s kind of nice to go someplace, you’ve already been to, and not have an itinerary. Just winging it, and not be tied to a schedule, is liberating. We did that in New Zealand last year. It was my second time there and I felt like I could just wander and take it all in and not be in a rush. Can’t wait to see your travel vlogs. 😊

Good morning Michele. I know that you'll have a fabulous time on your trip, especially since you love cold weather. For me, anything under 70°, is cold. We should trading living places.
North Face makes the best winter jackets and coats. I never knew that they had an outlet.
The HeatTec top fits great, you are right, the tights are too big on you.
Ok, Michele, what happens when you need to use the bathroom? 😊 That's the 1st thing I would think of!
You're ready to build an igloo!
    I'm excited for you! 🩷💝😘
