- Hop onboard the all new 2018 Boston Whaler 170 Montauk, which gives a new spin to classic center console-with innovative refinements and advancements, this model continues the company's "unsinkable" legacy. All the hardware onboard is 361-L grade stainless-steel, and with the stock 90 horsepower Mercury FourStroke outboard on the transom, our reviewers topped out at the 40 MPH mark-while still getting almost five miles to the gallon. Come check it out with boats.com's Lenny Rudow...

Many years ago I saw a 25' Outrage that was broadsided by a container ship in the middle of the night, about 20 miles off Port Everglades.
They were sword fishing and didn't see the ship until it was on-top of them! Having just enough time to dive overboard before the collision, which did critical damage to the boat also shearing both motors off the transom. The ship kept going, not even knowing it struck the Whaler, which was almost cut in two! but UNSINKABLE! still floating. Once back on board, they managed to find one of the battery's and hook it up to the VHF and call the Coast Guard who towed the boat to Lauderdale Marina where I talked to one of the survivors of this incredible story. He said Thank God it was a Boston Whaler and Not a Bayliner! LOL, I had to agree!
You can't put Boston Whaler and Bayliner in the same sentence, not allowed!!! Shit, I just did.
I have never been a huge fan of Whalers but you can't argue that they are probably the best built small boats available. I don't know of any other company that builds to the same level of quality.
They can’t sink, but they can capsize.
I grew up on Tampa Bay, I remember those boats being around since the early 1970’s.
My favorite boat on the planet 🌎 So versatile and functional. It is the perfect 👌 all in one. I used to sell Sea Ray’s and Whalers. Now that I am retired military I think I need to get me one ☝️
Looking to buy my first boat, this boat seems perfect for my needs, thanx for sharing, i found this video to be very informative and helpful
Cheers
Well, did you buy it?
I'm going to get the high rails in back and low rails for the bow. Set up for bay/ocean trolling with side rod holders on the high rails and the seat with trolling motor/spot lock in the front. I hate using the anchor all the time and the spot lock (GPS based) is fantastic. The 115 hp upgrade brings 6.8 mpg at a fuel efficient cruise of around 23 mph (range around 155 miles). Top speed @46 mph. My thinking is this boat can be both a capable saltwater or big water trolling rig in back with a finesse bass/crappie/striper casting/jigging front deck.
I've owned four whalers incl. two classic 17 Montauks, 22 outrage, and now 170 Montauk. The new 170 is definitely very impressive for the size of the boat.
I have a 1988 17' Montauk and its the best boat I've ever owned! Coincidently, I run her right here at Ponce Inlet where you shot this video. :-) I hope your enjoyed your visit
Best boat ever! I own the same. MY 87. I love her.
I am curious how this boat handles the chop in my area? We get 2 and 3 footers in the bay around around Sag Harbor, NY. It's the ideal size if I can feel safe in going through the chop.
what boats have you owned?
These are based on one person riding fuel consumption. If 5 persons on board at 4000rpm, the fuel consumption are 7-8gph. I always monitor my boat fuel consumption on different number of passengers.
The waterlogged legend.
I have a 2018. One thing I notice is that with the battery off the pump at the beginning of the video. Doesn’t pump water out. Came back to the boat after a rain storm and it was filled with water. I have to leave the battery on. I thought it would be hard wired to bypass. I have no electronics so I guess leaving the battery on isn’t bad.
MAT ,,it should be bypassed.
Just leave the plug out and it should drain just fine.
Nice high freeboard for a 17 footer.
dream boat
I wish they made a side console walleye boat with that hull. It would sell great.
Do walleye need you to sit towards one side of the boat?
My favorite👌
Look up "Haul Over Legend"
You mean the red top legend?
Fabulous Boat 🤩
How are people supposed to go whaling with this thing? It's way too small.
Great video thanks for that. I am from Croatia and i have a really big problems to order boston whaler montauk because for example if i want fishing package i cant order sun lounge its really stupid i really dont understand why its problem the second thing you can order only with mercury not yamaha engine if you order only boat without engine than it is too expensive and the third problem in boston whaler they dont understand that their original trailer you cant use it in europe. Boat is great but people are crazy because of this problems that i mentioned
You can't order the fishing package with the sun lounge because the sun lounge turns the entire front of the boat into a deck with cushions. It extends all the way back to center console. No room for cooler seat or rod holders in front. Order the front cushions instead.
@@calcrappie8507 but sorry i really dont understand you because it is clear that I will not have the sun lounge and cooler seat when i want to have cooler seat i will not use and have sun lounge i will easily put it in garage but I really dont understand politics of boston whaler sometimes i will wnat to have cooler seat and sometimes sun lounge. But you cant order the both thing
@@kristiancacic6361 I think the sun lounge install is more permanent. Pretty expensive option. Probably a lot of work to remove it. I agree, would be nice if you could do that but maybe safety is affected if removed/installed too much.
Amazing love it
How many liters have livewell?
nice boat i like it
Is this boat good for a smoker?
Where’s the stern light go?
Mounted on dashboard top. Bimini top (if ordered) comes with opening for light pole.
Do you have an optional transom to incorporate two outboards?
No they don't. You can certainly mount a small "kicker" (5-10hp) motor for trolling etc.
GOD IS GOOD!
Said same thing about Titanic. Mother nature always wins. Theres a way to sink it.. Conventionally maybe not. But theres a way. I saw a boat float down the river on fire melting before..
Titanic sink becuz a huge ass iceberg hit it lmao not waves
THEY CAN"T SINK!!!
Too bad they are so expensive! 30 to 45 K is over priced!
Now up to 60K
Fish box an high seat in the front takes up all the room. No body can even walk around. Making all the boats for rich kids only.
quit hating loser maybe if you went to the gym you would be able to step up around it or fit behind it
Very irresponsible to state that you cannot sink the boat...How about swamp it? gives new boaters a false sense of safety..I guess thats what it takes to sell boats these days.
strick
you can not sink that boat. Do your research. I did. My family as owned Whalers since I was 4 years old, 1963. I own a 210 2016.
This boat has an inner hull and an outer hull, with flotation in between - swamp it, and leave the plug out; it will float back e
With a dry floor as it drains. Unsinkable!
Not irresponsible at all. It’s a fact and has been proven for over 60 years.. You simply can’t sink a whaler. Can it be swamped? Yes. Can it capsize? Yes. Will it sink? Absolutely not.
@@roybaltzjr.3116 A lot of boats are unsinkable these days Boston whaler not special any more sorry
@@Adam12Designs see reply above...pos flotation required by coast guard...Whaler is not special any more and you guys still say the same crap...plus all theold ones are water logged just see how low they sit in the water lol...oh and maybe you better book a trip to the dentist after riding in one so he can put your fillings back in...
Did anyone see how dirty the water was
Lots of waterways have tea-colored water. Not dirty. Caused by trees and plant growth in the forested estuaries.
