  • The inflation occurring right now has hit the homestead. The loafing shed that we have been planning on putting in has tripled in price. At nearly $10k, it is now not financially viable. So, we are going to build our own shelter.
    Materials for this project:
    Canvas Tarp 12'x16' (1)
    Cattle Panel 50"x16' (2)
    Hog Panel 34"x16' (1)

    3/4"x24"Spikes (4)
    Treated 2x4x12' (4)
    Treated 2x4x10' (2)
    Treated 2x4x8' (7)

We’ve built some in this style over the past couple years. I don’t have a heavy snow load, but have had 40 turkeys roost on the tops of ours at a time. I used 2x10s on the sides and 2x4s for the front and back with the top of the 2x4 frame aligned to the tops of the 2x10s. This gave some extra clearance for daily pasture moves. I also used corner bracing installed with 6” timber screws, and put eye bolts on the front to make pulling with the Kubota easier. These have stood up to 80 mph winds quite well. Key for us has been to put in t-posts on the leeward sides when we expect strong storms. Otherwise we encountered chicken losses. The shelters have worked for sheep, turkeys, and chicken so far for us. Take care!

I like the build to preserve the canvas probably could have coated with fiberglass resin and painted was a thought I had

Yes, that would have been a more permanent solution. We originally planned this as a temporary structure while we waited for prices to come down on metal loafing sheds.

what about rain or thunder storm safety....???

The tarp sheds water, so rain isn't a problem. We don't get a lot of thunder storms so lightning has not been an issue for us. Wind could be a problem. Make sure to build the opening so does not face the prevailing wind direction and have an opening in the back to let the wind through. We built this three years ago and it is still up the last time I passed by the old homestead.

How did this hold up through the winter?

Unfortunately, I don't know how well it held up during the winter. We ended up moving before the first major snow storms hit.

New subscriber- did you move to another homestead? Or did you stop homesteading?
