  • Here's a few of my thoughts on why you should consider leaving NYC! Whether you've always lived there or have moved there after college and lived there a few years, I give some considerations that you can mull over.
If you've recently moved somewhere outside of NYC, let me know where!

Yes I totally agree. The lifestyle is extremely stressful in NYC and not worth it. I moved from NYC to San Diego along time ago.

Thanks for sharing this! Good point about the hustle in NY... Sometimes when living here a long time its hard to see whats going on on the outside.. The constant pressure to keep up with trends, frequent outtings and maintain vehichles and housing puts a serious strain to make more money here.. far from a simple life

yes, exactly. it's easy to view life through the NY bubble and not see how things can be in other places. wishing you the best!

I totally get that. I can't remember if I mentioned specifics in my video, but I moved out of NYC after living there for 3 years. Maybe that's just the time when it all sets in lol Do you have your eye on a specific state or city to go to next?

In August, more than 5,000 people with NYS drivers licenses traded them in for Florida licenses, an all time record. I moved to NYC in '89 and worked for 30 years in Manhattan and Brooklyn. It was exiting at first for a young, single guy but after a few years it was only my pension that kept me there. I figured I'd stick it for 30 years, when my pension allowed me to retire.

That’s fair! I think a lot of people in that position would stay. Overall it depends on the timing and circumstances. Who knows? Maybe I’ll move back one day when I’m in a different phase of life. Glad it worked out for you! 😀

You're right about the social situation. People who don't know better may think people being all around means way more opportunities for friends, like everyone is casually chit chatting with random people. It's the opposite. People have very strong barriers in public, they are not at all in a friendly mode, add to that many people being extremely selective about who they even consider being friends with, you have to look around the same age, same style, same personality, into the same things to even have a chance and that judgment is made all in a few seconds even without speaking. Your best bet is meeting through friends of friends at social events and the vast majority of those will just end up acquaintances. As you said, most of the friend groups people see walking around are people who have known each other for awhile, they are unlikely unconnected people who met randomly in the city. Not to say it's easy making new friends moving to a new city as an adult anywhere but just that people need to realize they are not going to recreate a Friends-like situation or anything remotely close if they're moving to NYC on their own. That said, I think it's still a very interesting experience and can be worth it for a few years so long as you are able to find a decent paying job (or have parents who help out).

I absolutely agree with everything you mentioned! It’s great for a few years as it can be a magical place (or at least have magical qualities) but regarding friendship making, you have to be super diligent and extroverted to have the opportunity to really meet people. It definitely won’t be like Friends lol 😀

I lived there in the late 90's and early 2000's. I didn't want to leave though. Yes, rent and food prices are away lower, and it was safer back then.

Glad I could help! I moved right after college as well, so if you have the support system and financial means to do it, NYC can be great for a short period. The hard part is that you don't want to get stuck in a place where it's hard to achieve the life you want long term

I would argue that the little anecdote with the German girl had nothing to do with being in New York. Europeans are extra friendly, and so are tourists. Here as a New York native who agrees that people are cliquey and not so friendly
