Just recently know from reading the book Dior Runway, the show was inspired by Sigmund Freud dream interpretation, that all those creepy looks were from the unconscious of the wedding guests. Truly an eye opener for a millennial runway show
I have noticed that when the creepy looks, as you said, start coming in, the song that starts is titled 'uninvited' ;) They are NOT welcome to the wedding. The lyrics of the song can also very much be interpreted in the context of the wedding guests' unconscious / repressed fantasies.
I think all fashion requires time for the hype to die down before its virtues (or lack thereof) can be revealed. It’s why places like the Met’s Costume Institute are so important, they allow us to really see what has stood the test of time in terms of innovation and craftsmanship. I’m waiting to see how much of this Vetements streetwear nonsense will end up in a retrospective of fashion thirty years from now.
@@HangryinBrusselsIthink this is what the show addresses though, relevant now more than ever - The fragile facade of bourgeois European civilisation, upheld by the the Roman Catholic Church, reaffirmed by the !Belle Epoque (the era most prevalent in the clothing silhouettes shown here) where Europe had a prolonged period of peace and socio, economic and political advancement. This leads to Nationalistic pride, which in turn foments the exoticising and eroticising of the ‘other’ cultures, African, South American, Far Eastern, as pagan, unenlightened and wildly unhinged. Europe refutes the other, but the more something becomes unclean and taboo, the more it invades their fantasies. Still, despite Western civilisation’s pretence to ‘decency’ as represented by the first beautiful young married couple (the guy is secretly gay though, thus voiding any true feelings of marital love - he wears a green Carnation which signalled fin-de-siècle homosexuality), there are already signs of cracks showing - the wedding guests gossip amongst themselves in Proustian fashion, and soon Fascism and impending war appears in the form of some very handsome military men in boots, the debonair face of ideological tyranny.
According to Jeremy Healy who composed the soundtracks for Galliano’s runways, Steven Spielberg attended this show with the intention of asking John to create costumes for one of his films, but walked out on hearing whip cracks, and moans. Iconic
@@Psychosisproject just sitting in a cafe, Galliano, for no reason at all, was insulted by a Jew.ish woman, calling a rooster. And his answer was vilely filmed. They alone are guilty of the situation and should be convicted of insulting the personality of the designer.
Now i understand why they critize so much Maria Grazia, this is simply so much beyond just fashion, the richness and soul in the clothes and the presentation, there will never be someone like John Galliano again. I truly think Dior should hire John again, that would make History and would bring the house of Dior to a place that only had during John Gallianos era, it was simply magical.
Marco Benneti they cant hire him again he was fired after a huge scandal where he was drunk screaming that he was a nazi.... but you are right Maria grazia should have never been hired her creativity levels are well not up to par with the past Dior creative directors raf simons also set the bar high. If they were going to take someone from Valentino they should’ve taken pier paolo
As far as I remember, he wasn't screaming, but it was a PR nightmare they wanted to avoid at all costs. Get this though - the patrons in the original video WERE LAUGHING! The people who he was drunk ranting at didn't even take it seriously because they knew it was drunk nonsense. Maybe he went too far and it looked bad, but my God, they went over the top with their response to what was originally a victimless crime.
they can call him what they want but no one can deny his gift. genius. haute couture died that night . the talent far outways the crime... stupid drunk high bitter queen night . forgive and bring back.
This runway is a tribute to Stanley Kubrick. The intro music belongs to Orange Clockwork (1971) and to the ritual scene of "Eyes Wide Shut" (1999). 02:11 The twin girls to "The Shining" (1980). 10:33 The outfit tribute To Espartaco movie (1960). 09:30 The model is Sophie Dahl and 14:31 to "Psycho " soudtrack (1968) by Alfred Hitchcock. 11:47 A Barry Lyndon (1975, Stanley Kubrick) outfit.
Thank you soo much!!! Not only was Galliano a brilliant couturier at Dior, he was also an incredible showman! Dior needs someone who can be BOTH those things if the house wants be great again.
Imagine setting the bar at the top and being able to outdo yourself every single time. Galliano did again and again. This man transcends fashion itself.
Wow when fashion transcends reality! Dior will never be the same without gallino. 3:55 is carmen dell'orefice, she is now 88 years old, the oldest working model in the industry. 12:06 is Debra shaw, exquisite supermodel! She wore that black mask with crucifix on it and stuck her tounge out on the runway for Alexander mcqueen's dante, and she was superb im muglers shows! There both still working to this day!
Galliano took the music of the opening from Stanley Kubrick's Eye Wide Shut (1999) and then the two girls referenced the creepy twins in The Shining with many other movie allusions...
I miss this genius everyday. Dior will never be what it was during the Galliano years. We will never see this kind of theater again. McQueen and Galliano were couture and theater.
Please, enough with the comparisons to costumery, as if these incredible creations were on par with quick-order hackwork lining the prop-rooms of regional theaters: even in the video one can discern the extraordinary craftsmanship realized through countless hours of highly skilled labor, how beautiful the materials are, how cunningly designed, and then the whole mise-en-scène (informed by centuries of fashion history, cinema, painting, psychology, etc) attempts to elevate an “applied art” to the boundless realm of the imagination: it is this which distinguishes Galliano, Mugler & McQueen not only from ready-to-wear designers but even such masters of haute couture as Vionnet, Charles James, Dior, Valentino, YSL, whose work they have absorbed and transformed-the outsized ambition driving the likes of Galliano, Mugler & McQueen is not to produce commercial clothing, but to create counterworlds hospitable to the extravagant imagination....
So avant- grade, could’ve saved a lot of words by just saying he falls into the avant grande territory of designers. I will say he does tho this years maison margiela haute couture was awesome
Watching in 2019, still holds up & makes current haute couture collections look boring AF. Love the continuity of the deconstructed/reconstructed corsets throughout. The soundtrack MADE it. Thanks for getting a hold of this original version.
The absolute genius johon galliano, there will never be another one ,the rich history of dior bring the best out of him and so magnificently he manage to outdo himself with every creation. Every collection feels like a beautiful dream.
Gallino is incredible outstanding! A pioneer of fashion like Alexander McQueen. But Thierry Mugler was No 1 , check out his 1997 Spring summer show. Best in all of history
Magnificent show! Did anyone recognized the main theme, sort of dark voice? Was the music from Eyes wide shut, by Kubrick, in the secret society reunion! 👍
17:43 the way the heels turned match the soundtrack so so well ❤

Hes definitely in my top 3 I have been watching him since i was a teenager hes amazing at dior and manson. This is indeed a very dark show
That first wedding look, the groom is wearing a green carnation, which in Edwardian times was a covert sign of homosexuality.
so smart!!!
love it even more now , thanks for the info ;)
The groom also had his hand tied behind his back with a pearl necklace. So smart
@@Pigdairy What a meaning detail!I m a quite novice in this field. Can you please tell me what's the mean? 🧡
thx for the detail
This show being on youtube with the original soundtrack has never been done before. Great job!
It's 2021, and this presentation hasn't dated one bit -- still so modern. Genius is timeless.
I'd say dressing black people as "savages" is probably a bit less done these days

What a prude. Given Galliano's drunken opinions about the Jewish faith though... Might have been a smart choice on Steven's part.

That's how John Galliano was fired in 2011 by Christian Dior, after 15 years of the best collections of authentic haute couture.
