- Hello peanut gallery! I've been waiting a long time to show you this super easy way to make the Wonky 9 Patch block! I have not seen anyone do it exactly like this, but I got the idea and tested it on paper and it worked. So I jumped right in and did it with fabric for the first time with you and now I'm hooked! What a fun and easy block to create. It takes no time at all to whip up 9 blocks, and they are fabulous! I was not planning on this being a series, but I've decided to go ahead and turn it into a quilt project, so stay tuned for the rest of the series! I hope you like it! So LOVE this block! What I love about your quilt classes is you make it fun, beautiful and accessible. As a new quilter I watch other tutorials that stress me out due to the precision requirements. The person snuggling up in a quilt you make is not checking the seams for precision..they are enjoying the warmth from something made with love. Thanks as always Darlene! You are the best!
All the quilting "rules" are exactly why I never bothered with making quilts. I was petrified! And the few that I dabbled with in the past were a mess, but like you said, they were comfy and well loved. Then I discovered crazy quilting and that had no rules. Now I break all the rules! LOL
Love, love, love this patch. Please keep up the great work. Love the idea of ironing to the side to keep batting out, and no, I did not know that was used in the olden days. I just love the look of Grandmas quilts!!! I'm not the best at sashing so I hope to see some in your future videos. They just make me nervous. ❤️

It is amazing how you come up with ideas to make something so easy! Never cared for wonky until seeing you do it. Watched so many videos on crumb and wonky quilting. If I had found yours first I would have saved hours of time that I could have been quilting. I am old so am slow at getting things done.

There you go, you did it again! Taught us well how to create something AWESOME. I WILL do this. Did you know there is some kind of "organization", or "association" that every year picks new words to be added to the dictionary? I think "Wonkified" should be in this year's picks, if it's not already!! But "wonky" related to quilting should be a meaning!
A stack of 10 inch squares I bought recently are yelling at me right now to do this. No peace and quiet in my sewing room, some days all the fabrics are shouting for attention. Great video! Love it!
I decided to try this quilt. I AM NOT A QUILTER! I make bags, pin cushions, and fabric boxes. I used quilt blocks I bought at a garage sale. I was doing okay with step 1. The second cut, however, one side was way too narrow and the other much too wide. I was tired and frustrated last night so I cut all the blocks in half. So, now I have 18 blocks instead of 9. Talk about wonky, it's going to be a wonky bag. But, somebody might buy it. Who knows. I enjoy your videos.

I love this I just made an appliqué quilt for my grandson's third birthday. I have teenage boys who want one also and this looks so easy to do. I love the color possibilities I can't wait to see how you finish it.

Darlene, just had to let you know that I just finished a wall hanging quilt using your self-binding sandwich, what a frustration reducer.. I have almost finished all my first attempts and am dying to start a funky nine p@tch. I was very inspired by your videos. I was thinking of adding a black strip of fabric between all my pieces... have no clue as to what it will do to the seam allowance. I am also using fat quarters and trying to figure how to get the most large squares out of them but guess what... quilt math grrr. Anyway thanks again for sitting on my shoulder when I quilt...

darlene- i just luv this idea- so easy- i finished my first set of 9- ---12 inch squares-
they are in pink- purple- yellow- bright and cheery. i am taking them to group this am and see what fabric they have for sashing and backing that will compliment
these colors. then i plan to start another set or maybe one that i can add to this batch and make it larger. thx-m

This is such a GREAT tutorial! I'm thinking this is ideal for using 9 Fat Quarters or maybe 18 total using a few duplicate fabrics to tie them all together.
I already want to make more. This will be a new addiction! And I have other ideas for the design too. So exciting! LOL I just recorded the rows being sashed. Hope to upload that tonight.

I so screwed this up. I was so into it. I had my fabric cut into 13 inch squares, I made my first set of cuts. Mixed them up like you said, sewed them together. Went to do the next set of cuts but the mixing up didn't match up to what you said. I'm like what happened. Well it turns out I started with 8 fabrics and not 9. I'm so upset with myself. I was making this for a baby gift. I'm thinking of asking my friend to embroidery the babies name and maybe put that in the middle as the 9th patch. I can't wait to do this project again but this time the correct way. LOL

I like these blocks a lot! I'm still not ready to start making quilt blocks, but when I am, it's awesome that I can go back and watch your videos. Right before our vacation last week, I did go buy some rayon fabric to make my own tunic shirts but didn't have time to make them before I left. And now the week after the vacation, I've had to catch up things and also work my job, so no time this past week. I hope to get at making a shirt soon and I'll report how it turns out. (I bought THREE different materials for three new tops!) Do you have a hard time finding 100% rayon? At our JoAnn Fabrics I could only find part rayon (but at least it was a major part, like 72% or 68%, something like that). The material does seem quite drapey, which I want.
Since you don't like the actual quilting aspect of making a quilt, you might want to check out Wendy Gratz's video, "Quilt as You Go #1 - The Basic Technique". It's quite different from other QAYG methods as you can do it without sashing or having to manipulate fancy quilting a throw size or larger quilt on a small home/domestic machine.
Basically, you make the quilt block as normal, cut a piece of 100% cotton batting 1/2 to 1 inch larger than the same size of your quilt block, pin the batting and quilt block together, quilt it, square it up, then sew each block together (with their batting) as you would normally. You steam press the seams open where one block is joined to another (hence the reason for using 100% cotton batting vs. polyester that can melt).
Yes, you still add a backing, but after pinning the backing to the assembled quilt top (that already has the batting attached), you only need to do minimal stitching on top (like straight lines or a few stitch in the ditch seams) to hold the whole thing together. It would be just perfect for these kind of blocks. What do you think?
I have watched her and she does it like many of the others. Problem is she is putting the block together but then she still has to put a gigantic backing on that. Then she is still dealing with moving that entire quilt under the arm of her machine to do the final quilting. I like methods where you never have big parts of the quilt under the arm of the machine, like with rag quilting. Each quilt block has backing so once you sew the blocks together, you are done. I have a way I "made up" but after watching hundreds of videos, I see two others who sort of did what I have done, so I think I will eventually show my most easy way. If people hate it, well, at least I'm not the only one who did it. lol

Yes, any block can be turned into a tote. In that case, you'd need to make just two so you would not want to cut the way I did because with my way you end up with 9 blocks. But you could make two on a foundation like this one: ua-cam.com/video/JDUer4yv150/v-deo.html&index=17
Hi Darlene, I have just sewn this it is awespme. Was wondering i would have liked to make it with more than 9 fabrics as i would get more blocks to make a bigger quilt. Is this at all possible? Can you please let me know, cannot believe i have done these blocks is such a short time. Thank you.
All you have to do is make more blocks. You could use the same fabrics and just cut at a slightly different and no two blocks would be alike. You could also use different fabrics. As for stacking and cutting more than 9 fabrics at a time, you would start to get some repeat blocks, but that's fine too.

What decides how many pieces you count and put at the bottom? Is it a set number or can you pick any number you want?
I have no clue because I did this video a long time ago and I don't remember what I did. If you want, just experiment. Get some mixed colors of construction paper and pretend it's fabric. Cut the pieces and experiment. It's the best way to learn!
