We all love the weaker player always. Weaker team, weaker nation, weaker person, but ironic we dont actually support one, we all prase the STARS, models, actors, etc
Standard victory conditions should be an opt-in option on the ranked ladder, just like random civ. If a majority of the players select the option, then the game should have standard victory conditions.
Agreed. I'm so tired of playing Arena and getting castle rushed or arabia. I'm trying to get better, but its so hard when your around 1000 and die to cheese strats. There is a serious grind to get over in that stage. These unorthodox maps are so much fun to watch and I want to play them.
@@MasterGhostf can attest, sometimes I just quit when I get castle dropped because I'm just so bored of defending it, and lower elos don't seem to have that problem. I'm not good enough to get to an ELO where people actually try anything but whatever build order they know for FC castle drop. Also for a long time I used to just quit empire wars games as soon as I got scout rushed. It was boring. Lol
Nili definitely had a chance but forgot to use everything he had. Idle Bombard cannons and also a lot of floating resources and idle castles which could have created an desperate flood of Petards.
Indeed. Up against a highly uncommon strategy plus the nerves from the pressure probably added up to these mistakes. A great watch and it seems Nili appreciated his opponents ingenuity.
Yes and before the end, the last wall wasn't completed, if he had sent his bbcs and rattans over in the south while the onagers were still in the north, that might have been a game changer as well.. However, amazing game, lovely to watch and as always T90s vibes just always make my day😂
Reminds me of one of my games on HD. Map was hide-out. After some failed feudal agression by me, he went up earlier to castle. I saw the only option to come back by better booming. The quietness was weird until the countdown started. I had the better eco as my opponent spend much micro into getting relics. I was able to push severely, but time ran low and hideout maps are easy to wall... Luckily I had Huns and researched Atheism. 11 The extra time allowed me to win.
"Bro tried to relic victory me but i had Huns" is a sentence i never thought i'd actually hear. Atheism is such a weird ass tech and i bet he will live with that loss for quite some time. I think the people who have lost to it are a small and tight knit group.
Worth highlighting again that this was a reverse pick tourney so it's hard to really go onto the series with a solid plan of what you wanna do on the maps, great game plan and execution, gg Dan!
Bear here: as a matter of fact these medevil monks drink alot of beer and since most bears are under the age of drinking they are legaly not allowed to consume these monks.
RE: Monks and bears, In 2 Kings 2 (in the bible) the prophet Elisha is insulted by some youths as he walks up a mountain and in response he curses them in the name of the Lord and 2 female bears come out and maul the kids. May not explain it in game, but would be a funny ability for monks to have.
Standard settings in a tourney is such a refreshing change, this was a lot of fun. You could have options for players to pick the game type along with maps/bans, that will throw a few spanner in the works for some people! Honestly, someone needs to do it ASAP.
there is a story in the bible about the prophet elijia or elisha in 1 or 2 Judges I think , where some boys mocked the elderly prophet and a she bear came out of the woods and killed them - maybe relevant to the monk/bear dynamic in the game?
The real lesson here is if you got for relic victory, build the monastery at the absolute back of the base. Would have been far less close it it was against the wood line instead of in range behind the walls
I've felt like Relics could be used in some sort of Capture The Flag type of game mode. Maybe need to tweak a few things, obviously decrease the time allotment for victory, and only on smaller map sizes, maybe a regular sized duel map for a 4v4.
If red had vision in the bottom right at the end, if he knew there was a gap in the wall he could have gone around, it might have gone differently. Amazing game.
I know the being under the pump in game does not leave you a clear head to make decisions and it usually makes you think you have less time to do something than you do so you settle for a "right now solution" instead of a proper solution that will counter and likely turn the game in your favour. Definitely should've Onager cut though, keep a few things at the front to look like he's still there. Going through one layer of neutral walls isnt a problem compared to like 5 of fortified in the end (even at the start it was double thick). That's why I love non standard maps because it forces people to think and not just rely on hard coded experience - Arabia/Arena are chess matches where you pull from 1000's of previous games of experience to decide on what to do. With these lesser played settings you actually have to trailblaze a bit and come up with stuff on your own because there isn't a well established meta that you just copy and follow like a flow chart. Part of the reason why KOTD5 was so boring was it was completely predictable until mid castle - but most games were over by then in reality.
I feel like it's definitely doable for Nili. I still stand by the onager cut choice as that monastery is well within reach by trebs in the forest. Push through the middle so the opponent doesn't suspect. And the onagers and trebs and bbc should surprise Blue. Blue didn't even have outposts along the woodlines.
Friend of mine's computer broke, so his backup laptop can only run the 2013HD edition, so we reinstalled and played a Michi match against some AI. I built the usual defensive army and castles, but my friend got swarmed and only survived by ending a villager into my base. I fought off the two a.i. while he resettled, thankfully I had some spare cows for him to start a Ranch in the back corner. Well, the A.I. players got all the relics, so I had to go in fast to destroy their monasteries before they got a relic win, thankfully the enemy was a Persian so converting his elephants was a safe way to keep my Rams safe which I sent in mass to clear out the enemy base. Eventually my buddy got his cavalry game on and we turned the tide of war in our favor because I prevented the a.i.'s relic win. Yep, you could say that our Ram Ranch won a great victory that day.
Fantastic game. Always felt standard victory conditions would truly open up the game to interesting strategies. Sure - there's some randomness involved and it may be slightly favorable for one player, but it's impact is grossly overestimated. . And this game goes to show that pressure can make one forget many obvious facts. It's not always required to brute-force your way through (trebbing/ramming). . He had so many rattan archers - why didn't he create a single siege tower and hop across the walls? (Yes there were multiple layers in the center, but only single layer at certain places.) In fact, at 21:21 - Nili is through. He just had one layer of wall remaining. Perfect time for the siege tower (should have been created beforehand). . Also, he could have used some petards to quickly smash through some walls. All Nili needed was get through the walls - then his archers would decimate the villagers and it's gg. . And I don't see why he didn't try to one shot the monastery. Have 3 cannons + 3 trebs attack around the same time and even if they die immediately after that shot, that monastery is toast. . Of course, hindsight is 20:20 and we can only imagine the thought process of Nili at the time. . Great job to both players. Brilliant game!
I would advise more standard victories in tournaments because it changes up game play and which civilizations are played. I had an epic defeat trying to do a wonder victory, one my father still likes to remind me of to this day. I had a completely fortified position with several castles protecting my wonder. There was walls and towers on the outer defenses and I had trebuchet and archers in the ready to defend against a siege. And my father found the only weakness in my defense, a single section of coast line which normally no cannon galleons would be able to hit my wonder, except I had miscalculated. Because my father played Turks with their +1 range and I had not enough defense on that small corner of a coastline, lost my wonder, and he won shortly after as there was not enough time for me to destroy his wonder.
Nili needed to ram those siege workshops on the north side of the wall, but he was having all his Rattans focus them. Those Rattans should have been focusing the onagers, Trebs, and any villagers they might catch within range. The entire key to winning was those Trebs, and they were just pelted with onager shots. Those Onagers should not have lived long enough to take Nili's Trebs down.
Crazy strategy of relic win by Dan, and he played absolutely to the T. Still this game was really close, and at one point I thought Nili would destroy the monastery. gg wp!

GGWP, I appreciate the respect from the losing player to the winner right at the end. Both played really well. This match was a close call. Keeping the names secret so I don't spoil anything.
I don't think you can do one without the other, that said wonders are insanely expensive even on their own, and you need to have enough army and defenses to also defend it, and the enemy knows where it is the moment you place the foundation, but the countdown only start once it is actually constructed, which takes a LONG time as well, even if you pull your entire economy to build it (which further hurts well your economy), so no I am pretty sure most games would end well before wonder victory would be feasable.
4:05 min : so you know… the monks are the right hand of our Lord and savoir who created every life on earth… if we, the bears, now attack a monk … god might get angry at us 🐻
Wonder victories would promote play that is boring for the players and especially boring to watch. Relic victories kind of do too, but not as bad and could be worth exploring. Ideally would be a victory condition like the monuments from AoE1. Esports live and die on their viewer numbers, if it's boring to watch, the esport dies eventually.
Would have been maybe even harder for Red if Blue had stood at the monastery with the last relic, and went crazy with defenses a bit before dropping the last one in and alerting Red. Can't say I would have played this well myself though.
I don't think so, remember that Nili was booming with 3 TCs. Every second means Nili has more advantage (more vills and more resources collected). So the faster you start the count down, the better.
I was wondering, has there ever been a tourney or just high level games with a higher maximum population than 200? Curious to see how late game would develop if people could get up to ~300
Do they really have such Idle T.C. Time in Dark Age at this Elo? I've only been doing this game for a little while & unless it's a messy messy game or off 'nomadesque' style start, I don't think I get that much going onto it.
Why no onager cut?! When T90 said that it was 150 years on the timer and Nili was through the neutral wall. He could have easily cut through the top of the map and sniped the monastery unnoticed. With shiftclick in DE it would have been almost an automatic cut. I was wondering blue had no outpost to the north of the monastery to see a cut.
I think by you stating you don’t want to “bite the bullet” to run standard tourney shows you don’t think it’s a good idea to have a tournament that has standard victory allowed.
